McKamey, which is actually the city animal control and shelter facility, is taxpayer supported as well as through all levels of contribution and promotion. The facility is a highly impressive one on a large tract of land but you can't always judge a book by the cover. The shelter has always been under scrutiny for a number of very unattractive reasons, especially when it's function is to care for, house and place animals into qualifying homes. Qualifying is based largely on what potential adopters write on their forms. No one From the shelter visits the homes of potential adopter to make sure the conditions are good for the welfare of the animal. Once you get beyond the highly questionable events and administrative stains, you can move ahead to SAVE a homeless animal and feel very good about that. Having given you a heads up about the shameful aspect, I will tell you that the majority of the volunteers who do the work and connect with the animals are dedicated, conscientious and caring. I suggest all adopters chose a vet before adoption and have your pet received a complete physical so there are no surprised that can be life-threatening or more expensive than your budget. Adopting an animal is a life long decision and you should start out knowing your pet's medical condition. I can tell you that the shelter is always at capacity with great animals that want warm, inviting and loving homes. I was lucky to have been told that before I could take my dog home, she would have to be held to treat her for heart worms. The Volunteer Coordinator Fran was friendly and thorough when speaking with me about the history of the shelter, volunteer options, and during the shelter tour. Each staff member said hello and introduced him or herself. Although a small shelter, everything looked clean and organized. This shelter is also a nonprofit and exists to help both the county and city shelters, Humane Society and McKamey, with overcrowding challenges. Can't wait to help walk dogs, etc!

It was a combination of foul water and a diaper smell. Perhaps the fish tanks and pet stations need a cleaning? We came in search of harnesses. They had a good variety. The prices were a bit high, and the displays were a bit disheveled. A lot of the harnesses we became fond of, unfortunately, were out of stock in the size we needed. We then went to look at the treats aisle and noticed a handful of dog food bags that were on the bottom shelves had an accumulation of dried urine on them. Just something to note and advise to perhaps not purchase any items from any bottom shelf. In our entire visit, we also noticed no one greeted us, asked if we needed assistance, etc. We ended up leaving and headed to the Petco just down the road and had a much better experience there.

You can check by calling 211 (United Way), or direct at 423.265.8000. They do a good job in providing basics, but you don't get to choose and you get what you get. Our voucher included lots of canned vegetables (some smashed beyond usable), a gallon of 1% milk (expires 4.11.20), a 10 pound bag of potatoes, a small jar of Jif peanut butter and a large bag of yellow onions, plus some odd items like jarred marinated artichokes and a huge cottage cheese that expired 4.8.20. We picked up this food on 4.9.20, so I highly caution you to check your expiration dates before you eat anything. I do feel as though I shouldn't complain at all because United Way is providing this food free of any cost. That being said, it's far from what I would buy for my family had they put the money directly in my hands. We did receive some strange items, such as a "discontinued" and expired-a-month-ago Wal-Mart item of 'blue fondant' and a set of decorating tips (without bags) :P. Just for the heck of it, I opened the fondant and it was harder than play-doh. I looked further and tossed 90% of expired food. :/ I would like to see them provide some fresh items with the canned foods and less snack-type 'Little Debbie' items. I get the Little Debbie though, as their manufacturing plant is located here in Tennessee. Even those items were expired a month ago. Some off-name granola bars expired this past January. I really was disappointed not to receive fresh fruits and vegetables. Oranges, lettuce, celery and garlic all would have been more appreciated than a sugary children's cereal and snacks. Maybe even a few fruit snack packs that don't require refrigeration and a loaf of bread would have been better choices than some that they picked. All the workers and volunteers wore masks and gloves and practiced social distancing amid our current coronavirus status and they also were very polite and respectful. They even loaded the food into my vehicle. But they do not allow anyone to come inside and I glimpsed a refrigerator full of fresh produce and stacks of bread. You do know you can freeze bread, right?
