We chose this trainer based on the five star reviews. In retrospect, it's clear that most of these reviews were written within the first few days of picking up their dog. (Some key phrases being "we have the tools" or "are on our way"). We may have written a similar review in the first few days when we were trying to believe that our $2100 was worth it. In reality, we could not have had a worse experience with this business. At her drop off, we said our biggest problem is separation anxiety, and we were repeatedly told that she didn't have that. She just had "normal" anxiety that would get better if she had exercise and a job. We were doing OK for the first few months of being home but not seeing much improvement in her leash manners in our busy area or in her response to being alone even with following her daily schedule. Then, I had Covid and was unable to stick to her routine. After that, she began injuring herself trying to get out of her crate daily. She still has the scars on her face to show for it. When I reached out for help, I was told to buy a $400 dog crate and exercise more. When that didn't work, we were told to buy her a treadmill. At this point, we were doing 2-3 hours of exercise and training with her every single day with no change. The board and train program is supposed to come with lifetime touchups. We felt it was obvious that we needed one and had asked about it for months. When we called to ask to schedule one, we were told, "She is perfect with me, so bringing her back won't help because you are the problem." We were made to feel that we were giving our dog a bad life and should give her away to someone who could stay home with her all day. We have now followed up with another trainer in a weekly program. The results are far better than she was even the day we picked her up, so I know the problem was in fact not me or my dog. (It also wasn't being allowed to snuggle with my dog on the couch or bed since we do that, and she still knows not to jump on guests now). The website talks about how this is positive reinforcement training only, and that will be true for your dog but it won't be true for you. Our interactions with this business made it impossible for us to have a good relationship with our dog because she became an endless checklist instead of our best friend and companion. I have waited a long time to post this review because I know I'm going to get shamed for it like I did for needing help, but people deserve to know that just because your experience here doesn't go well doesn't mean that you are unworthy of dog ownership. I took my 3 dogs Kona, Remi, and Diesel to Damon and he has seriously changed their lives along with my families lives for the better. Before attending Good Citizen K-9 my dogs were all over the place, jumping on everything and everyone, not listening, couldn't take them on walks, etc. Damon literally changed all that. My dogs are so much calmer, we are able to take them on walks, and they respond to commands a million times better.
