I had a great experience. I saw the review in here saying how they expect you to get a contractor or know your stuff, but honestly I got the opposite experience. There was an older gentleman who quickly asked questions and understood I was just doing my first project and he gave me numerous options and what to look for. To be fair, I can here before just to visit, then I took about a week to understand woodworking from online resources, I could explain what I didn't have and just wanted to try a simple project. He walked me around to what I needed, got a single, wide, hardwood plank and he ask his guys to trim off the edges to make it clean. Now I'm even more interested and doing more wood working and I'm seeing lots of holiday sales online for tools. For my lumber, I'm coming back here for sure. read more

I came here for boards to replace the top of an outdoor picnic table in a local churchyard. The tabletop boards were heavily damaged from years of weather and carving by the itinerant city residents who make use of the table. Jay hooked me up with 2" x 10" redwood, which other area big-box hardware & lumber stores don't even carry. The project is a service project for a Boy Scout in a local troop. In recognition of the service project's benefit to the community, they gave us a discount and sold us 18 linear feet of lumber for the price of 12. Pros: 1. Free and discounted delivery option based on your spend 2. Better selection of quality lumber than big box depots 3. Hand select the wood pieces you like, great option for expensive wood 4. Low and reasonable prices 5. Honest and friendly staff who are willing to help when they are *available* 6. Contractor discount for high spend This is a family owned business with seniors working and doing their best to help out as much as possible. Few things: 1. If you are clueless about what you need and expect them to help you out entirely, then this might not be a place for you. 2. Natural Wood is grown (if you do not know that already), stop complaining about shape, knots, colors etc. and see #2 above (select your own) 3. I've been Visiting Hulbert from last 4 years and they provide best quality Lumber and also give you opportunity to select wood and they cut it as per dimensions you need. Hulbert lumber is not in the same league as a Home Depot, it is a true lumber yard with speciality trim, custom doors, speciality hardware, exotic woods and stuff you can't find at other places. It is more expensive than a normal hardware store but you definately get what you pay for at this place. read more

I was looking for materials to rebuild a section of the fence and my neighbor mentioned that the only place he could find the top and bottom fence rails with groove/channel was at Hulbert Lumber in Newark. So, I stopped by on a Saturday morning and asked the sales clerk about it and he was able to find it immediately on the computer and perform the transaction for me and printed out an invoice for me to pick up the material outside. I drove my SUV to the pickup flag area and someone immediately came over and help me locate the material and load it into my SUV. I didn't even have to touch the lumber! I was originally planning to purchase the fence boards from HD or Lowes. But due to the excellent service, I went back to the sales clerk and order the rest of the materials and the pickup was smooth, again. Based on some reviews here regarding "custom" made wood planks, so I proceeded to talk to them about cutting me couple 1-3/8" thick x 3-1/2" width x 80" long pine planks, and would surely hear friendly a reply "Sure, come on by in couple of hours!". Yeah right... After kept profusely saying they cannot cut anything this size, but even suggest you cut it yourself! If I have all the fancy wood working tools they have there, I wouldn't need them would I? read more

I have been going to Hulbert lumber for years. They are where the professionals who use these products go. I have always been treated well, and left with the item I needed because I was assisted by a professional in the field. I recently went there to get something to support the dining room floor in my 67 year old house. It would skake as you walked across it. I am pretty handy and had it all planned out what I would do. I went in there and was greeted by a man who stepped out behind the counter and walked me over to an isle to show me what may be a better choice. I walked out with a pair of "jack" like devices that made the work MUCH easier and MUCH better finished product. IF they are any more expensive and I imagine they probably are on a few things (probably a better product) the service is SOOOOO much better than your "McHome" stores it isn't funny. read more

I called and spoke to Leon, looking for 3/16 inch hole pegboard. He was so interested in helping that he measured the hole size of the stock he had and then said he would call a supplier to find one 4x8 sheet if he could. Now that is service and I wasn't even in the shop. read more

The reason that I remain very satisfied with Hulbert Lumber is that they cut lumber to size when I needed an odd dimension to replace something. I did pay a reasonable cutting charge and it took about two hours. I was quite happy with the result. read more

First of all, I'm not an expert on wood working. Came here to get a 1" thick solid oak, 4ft of it. Was doing a home project to hang my guitar. I had some very basic questions on what I should do. The folks there are very nice and gave me some ideas. Paid $18 for the wood that I needed. read more

I am a general contractor in south san jose. I agreed to do a job in fremont recently without inspecting it 1st. I had to repair some rafters, and have never seen 2 1/2" wide rafters before in my life. I thought this job was going to be a disaster. I went by Hulbert lumber to try to figure out something. These guys agreed to rip down some 4x6's to 2 1/2 x 6's and have then ready for me in 2 hours. Good luck finding that kind of service for this scenario any where! They really saved me that day and I will definetly go back to them every chance I get! read more

Great place to visit. This place is expensive, let's make no mistake, but they offer a lot of services that the big box stores won't do, like ripping to size. Probably not a good day to visit this place (today 10/16/2014)...as I walk unto the store, a young gentleman walk past / just ahead of me while on his break (8:45 am)...turns out he was on the front / customer service counter...got to ask him a question reluctantly (his eyes showing that he should not be in that place)...my goodness he was just plain blood shot and could not utter a single sentence without bubbling...ask him about a fence mender..."I do not know, we are not a contractor...ah okey..." exasperated, just walk off from the store..." know a lot of contractors who spoke highly of this place / notwithstanding high prices...but someone who could not utter a straight sentence should not be on the counter...early morning / busy day but wasted young white guy / white t-shirt...should not be in that store...owners...please take note!!! read more

This is the best true lumber yard and hardware store in the Bay Area, with service to match! The store is incredible with a huge mural on the wall and very reasonably priced hardware. The lumber yard is huge, I was taken on a little tour with a very young, but knowledgeable salesman from behind the counter, who took the time to walk me through yard and wharehouse. I think his name was Correy. He explained how and what he would reccomend for my home renovations even a few good contractors. I walked away with the ability to question multiple contractors, and even help my pick when the time came. Which saved me a lot of time, money and heartache. I would definitely recommend this store and i will be going here for my projects from now on. read more

If you live nearby they are convenient to go to for decent lumber, however don't go expecting Home Depot pricing--you'll be disappointed. Don't go if you don't know what you want; the guys working here are not real friendly and don't seem very excited in answering questions about materials or giving advice. read more
