I came here for boards to replace the top of an outdoor picnic table in a local churchyard. The tabletop boards were heavily damaged from years of weather and carving by the itinerant city residents who make use of the table. Jay hooked me up with 2" x 10" redwood, which other area big-box hardware & lumber stores don't even carry. The project is a service project for a Boy Scout in a local troop. In recognition of the service project's benefit to the community, they gave us a discount and sold us 18 linear feet of lumber for the price of 12. I needed three six-foot pieces, and they had one and cut a 12-foot section in half for me. The project came out great!

After returning from a long trip, I couldn't open the padlock on my suitcase, which contained my personal belongings and medications. I went to Ace Hardware for help, and one of the employees (Jessica or Jennifer?) cut the padlock off with a large pair of bolt cutters in just two minutes. She even refused to accept payment for the service. I was deeply touched because, before going to Ace, I had tried to get the same service at A-A Lock & Alarms in Menlo Park. The employees there asked me to wait for the manager (or owner?) before they could help me. I waited hopefully because I have been using that shop's services for many years. I understood that they were going to charge me $25 to cut the padlock, and although I thought the price was quite high, I agreed because the situation was urgent. You can imagine my shock when the manager bluntly corrected me, saying that the price was not $25, but $250! Needless to say, I felt insulted and left determined never to use their services again.

Then the same guy was called to find the item but some one else from the store came and went to fetch! I thought why is this guy did not just help me at the first place? They have some kind of Command in line? The place had few workers but no one really care to assist me! I am trying to purchase an over $100 stuff and came few miles away to get it but they don't seem to care! Then the guy came back and told me they don't have what I want ! The online is wrong! I think he is just stupid and did not find it!!! Completely waste of my time! Not sure what is wrong with Menlo Park stores! I have repeat bad experiences in a month so I guess i will not return to this town to do any purchases! Where is the old fashion service?? It's gone !! Or maybe now a day ' service' is an unknown thing!!! I will just go to home depot or Amazon. Instead! Store like ace should review their service , if Amazon or home depot monopolised the market , this will be a good reason! I got better service at home depot cone to think of it!!!

Acehardware.com told…read moreme that Menlo Park Hardware had six of them in stock today so I put an order in for pick up to make sure I didn't have to dig through a disorganized rack for half an hour to find them when I got there. Less than 20 seconds after my order confirmation email I got an order cancellation email full of broken links to files on someone's hard drive. No explanation, just "Your order has been cancelled. Bye." I contacted customer service to see what the issue was and they gruffly told me that my payment was rejected and that I'd need to call my bank. I called Discover and they said no one had even attempted to charge my card for anything in the last 48 hours. Basically, Ace is full of it. McMaster-Carr overnighted the fittings to me for $13. Same card and everything. The next time you see some local hardware store owner crying on the news about how everyone shops at Amazon now try and remember it's likely because they stopped attempting to provide anything their customers needed a very long time ago. There's dozens of small-time hardware stores in San Rafael, none of them have the lowest prices on anything and all of them are packed with customers because they actually try.

L O C A T I O N Harbor Freight Tools is located in a plaza on the corner of Blacow & Mowry Ave. The parking lot is shared by a Indian grocery store and other establishments. It was a crazy experience when we were parking so proceed with caution. I N S I D E Everything is labelled well and what I do is look up what we want online picking the store we want to go to and it will state what aisle to look and if they have inventory at that store. Take this with a grain of salt. What I found with this particular Harbor Freight was that many shelves and areas were empty. So again proceed with caution. But it was all quite organized. S E R V I C E We were in need of a 5/8 deep socket and a socket wrench as well as a normal wrench. Luckily Harbor Freight comes to the rescue as we're not needing anything super fancy, just something that will do the job without breaking the bank. Luckily they had what we needed at this particular Harbor Freight. There was someone who was walking up and down the aisles asking if people needed help. He pointed us in the right area. Checking out was a bit long though as there was only one person initially and they were doing a return that seemed to be having some issues. But eventually the line was being handled a second person as they saw the line was growing exponentially. He seemed to be chugging away through the line after we paid. Glad they were there to help but it would've been nice to have a third person helping out. O V E R A L L This particular Harbor Freight seems to be quite popular that their stock seems to be out of a lot of things. Lines got pretty long but it was just chance. I recommend trying out Harbor Freight for any tools you may need that are good enough and doesn't have to be expensive and just works.

I told him I was looking for a specific model of an item, and he said they could check surrounding stores for availability. Great. He then brought over another associate to help, but that associate said he needed the item number rather than the model name. The first associate repeatedly pointed to my phone and told me to look it up on the store's website myself. Aren't employees provided with handheld devices to look up products and inventory? If customers are expected to search for the information themselves, it would also help if the store had adequate cell reception. I couldn't get the website to load, and the associate acknowledged the poor reception and suggested I walk all the way toward the front of the store to get a signal. The second associate eventually walked away, and just as the first associate appeared to be leaving as well, he turned around and asked whether I have an air conditioner and whether I wanted to replace it. I said I have one but don't want to replace it. He then asked me why not, which I found unnecessarily intrusive. He followed that by asking whether I wanted to sign up for an AC maintenance service. I declined. I appreciate associates approaching customers and offering assistance, but there's a difference between being helpful and making a customer feel pressured and uncomfortable. I came in for help locating a kitchen item, not to be questioned about my air conditioner, why I don't want to replace it, or whether I want additional services. The interaction became uncomfortable enough that I was glad to leave the store.

It is all between half to 75 off. At this point it is way cheaper than Ikea junk and better quality. I have a real hang up with patio furniture. It has to fit the space and I don't like real wood and I don't like glass and I don't like it when the chairs don't tuck under the table completely when not in use and I don't like it when you need cushions that you have to store in the winter to make them comfortable. I can never find exactly what I want - I didn't this time either - but at the prices they were giving this stuff away for I filled up my truck and went back twice. I put my new table and chairs together quick and it was painless. It makes such a big difference in enjoying my front patio and back balcony. My back balcony has rather tall railings - so I always wanted a bar height situation so I could look over the railing when seated - so now I have that. My geraniums hanging plants I like more than I ever could have thought. I can have a garden full of flowers but when I'm sitting in my living room or every time I walk through the front door these are what I focus on and constantly admire. I might put a few flower boxes in under the window. People in Germany do that often - I will have to build them myself as the exact fitment of them and size I obsess over. I will be back for a few fence posts and see if I can make that happen. Home Depot will have everything I need to do it.

[[ Kids Workshop Review ]]…read more Every 1st Saturday (or sometimes even more), Home Depot offers a Kids Workshop for free to build something which they list on their website. For October 2025 it was the Haunted Candy Box. It was our first time doing it so I wanted to give a detailed review and some things I noticed when I went. 1.) Workshop location is OUTSIDE of home depot on the right hand side. I attached a picture to show the location. 2.) Although you have to register on the website beforehand, the event is relatively chaotic and they do not check. I think they get a set amount of kits and they just hand it out until they run out. 3.) When we arrived at 9am, the event wasn't set-up and a bunch of parents with their kids were watching the setup. I don't think they finished until maybe around 9:15am (setting up tables, getting the materials, kits, etc.) 4.) No Aprons available which was a huge bummer. Not sure why the didn't have any. Maybe Home Depot does not ship these aprons in advance and it's whatever is left-over from previous events. 5.) The Tables themselves are pretty tall and I think 3-5 year olds may be able to work on them a bit easier. If your kid is on the smaller side or younger, they may not be able to reach the table. I've seen other parents bring their own miniature table so their kid can work on the craft. 6.) Some parents just showed up and took kits to work on it at home which is not a bad idea in case you don't want to do it there. Overall, I think it's not too bad for a free event but I wish they were more prepared for it. One employee was also very rude at the event we went to and seem annoyed we were asking questions like "Where is the apron?" or "Do you have anymore hammers or screwdrivers?". She would just answer "No" and that was it. Ironically the younger employees were nicer and went to get more tools for us which made her interaction even worse.
