After having an air duct cleaner come to assess our system, it was clear we needed to update our under-house ducting. I get 5 quotes, all from reputable companies. The prices ranged from $5k to $7k for the same quality duct system. We went with Hulbert who had the lowest quote. They were also able to squeeze us in prior to Christmas which was important to us. Hulbert saved me literally thousands of dollars with their honest assessment of my heating problem. I have a personal rule that I always get three bids. The first two contractors didn't even inspect the entire duct system under the house, Hulbert did. Doug came out to do an inspection on a home we were purchasing. He discovered that the previous (unlicensed) contractor had created a mess under the house and the ducting was incorrectly installed and they had not removed the old asbestos fittings. Doug gave us an estimate that included the environmental clean-up. It was reasonable and he was able to schedule everything for 2 days after closing of escrow. The job is now completed. The two crews (one environmental, one HVAC) came on consecutive days, completed the work with no complaints from the neighbors, and we now have a safe environment and brand new ductwork. I'm not a review writer in general but the Hulbert crew was fantastic. I had seven bids to replace my furnace and A/C units as well as the ducts. I chose them because of the recommendation of a contractor friend and the competitive nature of their bid. The scheduling was easy and the site inspection prior to the installation day was instrumental in working out some little details. On the installation day, they arrived on time and went to work. They even brought their own work tables. The demo of the old units took most of the first day but by end of the next day I was back to having heat in the house. They had to remove all the old duct work from under the house and I was impressed with the way they separated the insulation and the wires and made very compact packages for disposal. Doug is a wonder and an exception, in a world where poor work and bad interactions have become the norm. My heater in my home in Mill Valley decided to Gove up the ghost on a cold January day. My buddy uses Hulbert HVAC and said give Doug a call. Doug could not have been nicer or more informative. Doug asked a few questions about the furnace and what it was or wasn't doing. Based on the age and the behavior of the unit, he offered two options. He said he would take a look at the unit, as well as the condition. He said that he might be able to fix it, but because of the age, it might fail anyway, wasting time and money. He did come to Mill Valley to take a look, and said the more realistic option would be to replace it. He showed me video of the condition of the unit. Once it was decided to replace the furnace, Doug sourced the new furnace and set up a time to replace it. Doug was on time with his son. They both could not have been nicer or more professional. Let me start by saying that this is the first time that I have written a review, positive or negative, for ANY contractor. Let's just say I have had my fill...enough said. That is why I felt compelled to give Doug and his crew the kudos they deserve! Last December, I met with Doug to discuss replacing my furnace and adding air conditioning. During our meeting, we discussed installing a heat pump, which is both a furnace and an air conditioner. Doug suggested that we install a Fujitsu heat pump. After examining our existing ducts, Doug said with a few minor upgrades to the ducts and installing a bigger air flow return the heat pump would be the way to go. They were energy efficient, quite, worked very well as both a furnace and an air conditioner, and (drum roll) he could install it for considerable less than the conventional furnace / air condition combination. Additionally, it was compatible to work with our solar panel system. I was somewhat skeptical, but Doug was recommended to me by a friend, so I agreed. Doug and his crew showed up on time as scheduled and completed the duct work and installation all in one day. The price of the project was $6,000.00 LESS than other HVAC companies quotes to install the conventional furnace and AC combo. The heat pump worked like a charm throughout the winter. I waited until today to write this review because I wanted wait and see to how the heat pump stood up to the extreme heat. Brilliant! I cannot recommend this company high enough!!! I contacted my home warranty company as soon as my heater went out. They contacted another company which not only took a week to come out but had deplorable customer service - then spent about 20 minutes and left without fixing it!!! My warranty company contacted Hulbert as an emergency 2nd opinion. Jeff came out same day, diagnosed the problem, came up with a plan, and promised me he'd be back 1st thing in the morning to do the work. True to his word, Jeff was back at my house by 8:45am and I had heat by 10:30!!!!! I was really impressed with Jeff's service. I called the warranty company for our furnace at 7 AM, and within a couple of hours i had a technician readily available. I had to schedule for later in the day, and he met the time within 15 minutes, which is great because he had 3 jobs before mine. He was able to diagnose and fix the furnace in about 2 hours. Doug and his crew installed an AC unit for my family nearly 15 years ago, and he remembered details of the job all these years later. I remembered how happy my wife was once we had that thing running, as she was initially adverse to the investment. So when it was time to replace the 32 year-old furnace and rodent-compromised duct work in our current home, Doug was one of three bids I received. His attention to the specifics of my particular set up, as reflected in his bid, showed a certain expertise that I appreciated. Not a one-size-fits-all perspective. For a reasonable cost he offered to set up the system in case I wanted to add zone heating at a future date (separate wireless thermostat for upstairs, with dampers that direct flow to specific parts of the home). Since it would cost incrementally more to have him come back to do it later, I just ordered the whole enchilada. Glad I did...no longer am I heating/cooling half the house when no one is using that half! If you are going to invest in a new system, and have a two-story house, add zoning. As for his crew, foreman Dan and his crew were courteous, communicative, and efficient, and left the job site clean and organized (that's a big one for me, and says a lot about their work ethic). read more

My grandma is a bit of a worrier about things she doesn't understand and during the installation she started to ask If things needed to be fixed or replaced (especially her water heater for some strange reason). Anyways, long story short they assured her everything else was in good working order and there would be no benefit to her if she were to replace the water heater. Super honest and fair. After having Moore come out to do a tune up and inspection, per a Home Depot deal, they told me the unit wasn't working. The rep gave me a quote to replace what they said was a seized compressor on my a/c unit I called Doug for a quote for the same thing. He came out the next day and told me there was nothing wrong with the unit and that it was running fine. Since the installation was in summer, we didn't realize we had some heating issues due to the configuration of an older switchboard.
