Came the other day when I was walking the food court and saw somebody eating what looked like the most crispy bang xeo I've ever seen in the valley. I ended up ordering that and a sugarcane juice and both were really good. The banh xeo was in fact very crispy and had good flavor. I wish there was a bit more shrimps, but it was still good overall. The sugarcane juice was great and had a nice bitter and acidic note from the addition of kumquat. Very yummy and would come again! read more

I ordered their banh canh cua which is a vietnamese crab thick noodle soup with crab meat, pork hock, pork blood, shrimp and quail egg special. Writing out what the bowl is supposed to have from the menu description, I actually didn't get any pork blood in my bowl. The noodles were also a little more chewy to my liking - maybe underdone? This dish was okay. It was lacking that strong crab flavor and was kind of watered down. I have tried better banh canh cua and is also from California, so that's why I have higher expectations when it comes to Vietnamese food. This was a decent bowl especially at a food court. The pork hock was also really small and didn't have much meat to it - basically just the fatty skin and bone. I added lemon to the bowl which did make it taste better. The bowl + complimentary chinese doughnuts including tax cost $16.72. I liked how they gave me complimentary chinese dougnuts and tea, wasn't expecting that at all. The chinese doughnuts were good, very light and crispy. The place wasn't bad at all, but also nothing amazing. My friend took me here for some really authentic Vietnamese food. It's actually just a stall in the Mekong Plaza food court. She said it's from Central Vietnam. The duck soup was very good. Then she order some other dishes that I have no idea what the names were. But everything was good. I especially liked the shrimp dish that came in 10 little dishes, with fish sauce on the side. I. Crave. This. Place. Since I have family in the Scottsdale area, I am fortunate to fly down every 3 or so months to pop over here and eat this soup. It's so creamy. The noodles are homemade. As a gluten free foodie, I can rarely find homemade noodles! Hiding in this soup is quail egg. Shrimp and a very small amount of crab are in this too. The flavor is rich- and comforting. I've been here 4 times now; and each time, the same man takes my order. The owner, perhaps. He's so kind. Service was quick. Those who brought the food out were wearing gloves and masks. I was excited to try this option and their Vietnamese banh cuon. We wait 20 min and were the only customers there. A party came after us and received water... then all their food.. We only ordered one Entrée, did not get water and were still waiting. At this point fed up we asked for everything to-go. Not sure what is wrong with their service. This humble small place in the food court of mekong plaza IMO serves up the HOMIEST Vietnamese food in the valley. Nothing flashy, nothing trendy, nothing americanized. Just good well flavored homestyle Vietnamese food. They offer dishes that are very hard to find at other restaurants that primarily specialize in pho or com tam. The staff are very nice and friendly. I am uncertain if it's family run but sometimes service can be a little slow but good things are always worth the wait and patience. It can be easy to overlook this place given all of the dining options available in the area and in the plaza specifically, but do not sleep on this place if you truly want to have AUTHENTIC, traditional, and comforting Vietnamese dishes. Hue is the province where the Kings of the old Vietnam used to live and it's famous for the delightful, savory yet skillful cuisine. Banh Hue have many different kinds. The ones that are served here are banh nam (soft rice dumpling or cake padded with smashed shrimp), banh bot loc (more chewy type of tapioca cake stuffed with shrimp and pork) which are wrapped in subtle fragrant banana leaves and banh beo which is tiny steamed rice pancake in the tiny saucers/small bolts. They are all eaten with savory spicy lime fish sauce. I have been in USA many years and I have also been to more than 10 States but yet to eat anything as authentic and good as the Banh Hue menu at Hue Gourmet. All of them are well seasoned, dough was mixed on point. "banh bot loc" could melt in your mouth with crunchiness from the shrimp. "banh nam" is tasty. "banh beo" is smooth and clean with added crunchiness from the pork rinds. All are rice cake/dumpling with just batter/shrimp+/- pork but they offer me so much different flavors and goodness. I read someone's comment that the shrimps in banh bot loc are small and still have the shell but that's not anything unusual and in fact giving it a little crunch. So don't try to peel it out or just don't order this if you do not like shrimp shell. Yummy! Thank you thank you :). Their bun bo Hue is also very good. Ridiculous customer service. With a total of 10 in our group (dim sum was packed so we decided to try them), they gave us one thin napkin, even after asking for more, they would still only give one at a time. Food at best mediocre, didn't come out hot, couldn't add bean sprouts because of that. Egg rolls are half the size as other places. Order the large noodle soups, the bowl was huge but only half filled, what a joke. Kids usually share at other places, but we had to order more because suddenly all the little ones became teenagers at lunch today. No need to partronize. read more

So. Unbelievably. Authentic. My family and I were dying to get some good bun bo bue in the valley, and we haven't be able to find any restaurants to fulfill that. Hue Gourmet knows what they're doing, and the spice and the portion is insane for the price! Eating a whole bowl of the bun bo hue is gonna make you happy for sure, and I'm hoping to try out the banh loc la next time. I will say, if you're expecting an isolated restaurant experience where you'll be able to have an intimate conversation, then this place isn't for you. It's in the Mekong food court, and there's nothing more fun than eating at a table and listening to Vietnamese music in the background. Been here a few times, I've gotta say it's pretty good for a vietnamese fast food. This located in the Mekong Plaza. They have other food places all around but I usually go to Hue Gourmet just because they have all the food that I love and plus they give you free iced/hot tea. The environment is like a food court. You have to go up to order and pay, then they'll give you a number and you can pretty much sit as anywhere you want, then they'll bring the food to you. I ordered the banh beo, cha gio, and bun rieu. Banh beo (water fern cake) is more of an appetizer dish. It serve in 10 small dishes and a side of spicy fish sauce to drizzle on top. Cha Gio (egg roll) is pretty good and crispy. I feel like if you eat the egg roll by itself then it's kinda bland but if you wrap with lettuce and dip in the fish sauce they provided, then it's perfect. I would say the Bun Rieu (tomato crab noodle soup) is the most authentic as a vietnamese fast food I've ever eaten. I mean it's not the best but it's pretty good for a quick and simple meal. I would recommend to eat here during your lunch break from work/school just because the service is nice and fast, and also very filling. read more

How this storefront manages to average a 4 star rating is beyond me. Here's why: 1) The food isn't very good 2) The service is awkward and timely 3) Sanitation is lacking, seriously ... Tbh, I was so excited to find not only Vietnamese food here in the Grand Canyon State and even more so when I found out there was one specialized in Hue cuisine. I've personally been to Hue in Vietnam and it does have it's own regional differences among the various regions and cities of Vietnam. The food here doesn't even come close to that kind of authenticity or quality. I ordered the Banh Beo, Banh Xeo and Bun Bo Hue to try a few of the most common things to eat. Banh Beo- these little steamed rice cakes come in little sauce plates, topped with shredded shrimp and pork cracklings. It comes with a fish sauce for dipping. Their cakes were too thin, the shrimp garnish was pale and the cracklings were minimal. The sauce was way too diluted, but slightly sweet. Banh Xeo- some may call this a savory Vietnamese pancake or crepe. Made with a rice batter of coconut milk, rice flour and tumeric. Then stuff with pork slices, shrimp and bean sprouts. This dish really surprised me, the Banh Xeo was over cooked, greasy, too crunchy and tasted like bacon. The cashier even mentioned they were out of mushrooms for the Banh Xeo and that was questionable as it isn't supposed to have mushrooms in it at all. The Banh Xeo was overstuffed with bean sprouts, minimal pieces of pork and undercooked shrimp with tails still on. They didn't provide many herbs and one piece of lettuce came with it. Total let down. Bun Bo Hue- a complex flavored, spicy noodle dish. This dish could use a bit more work, a bit diluted, broth needed more flavor and complexity. The only flavor I got from this dish was spiciness from the oils and broth. I had to garnish a lot of shrimp paste and lime to get this one to a decent level. Props to them putting pork blood cubes in, but the beef slices was so chewy and tough. The side dish with veg for this was lacking, a minuscule piece of lime, some banana blossoms and deteriorating basil. No balance in flavor and where's the lemongrass? I was seriously upset not only emotionally, but my stomach hurt the whole time after! Besides the poor flavor and quality of food, just poor sanitation all around. There were flies everywhere flying about my head, landing on the table, on the food! It was gross. You can even tell that there is poor sanitation by looking at the storefront, fridges and open kitchen. The cashier was very awkward, we paid him $100 and he said he would give us change when our food was served ... what? In between serving our food, he would also go back to a table eat some of his meal and head back in the kitchen to get the rest of our food, without hand washing to be seen. My husband and I came on New Years and decided to split a bowl of bun bo Hue since we had planned on cooking lunch at home (and it was already 10:30 AM). So prior to grocery shopping, we stopped by. It was surprisingly not as busy as I expected it would be. We had passed by on weekends so many times and I was always excited to see the restaurant, as I am a full blooded Hue girl, myself. I would say that it was very delicious, although the broth was warm.....not piping hot like I prefer. But the plate of herbs just blew me away. I put a lot of bean sprouts and basil leaves in my soups. They even had a small container of mam ruoc! I would definitely visit again. I ordered #204 Duck Soup. The entree came with lots of duck meat and cabbage for the soup. I added chili oil to my soup of course to give it extra flavor and a kick. I might have put a little too much chili oil in it! The broth was steaming hot and delicious! It was only $7.95 for a big bowl of soup. They are known for their bun bo hue. First order: banh canh cua. Pluses: real crab meat and snappy noodles and shrimp! Minuses: broth tasted like peppery water. Second order: banh khot (yeah I know this isn't from Hue, but I love it). Pluses: Hmmm.... easier to pick up with chopsticks than most banh khot?
