I was in the area from out of town and the left front headlight went out on my VW Golf. Not only did Hudson's manage to squeeze me in to fix the problem; they repaired it quickly and the cost was extraordinarily reasonable. I expected that a car repair shop might take advantage of my compromised situation being non local and charge me a hefty premium. I think Cliff is one of the last Mohicans - he is personable and knowledgeable - ABSOLUTELY - but more than that , he is honest, compassionate , and believes in doing the right thing. I took my car to a local repair shop 3 years ago. They took the time to look and diagnosed the problem with my engine. Instead of doing the repairs, they referred me to the dealer, the problem was still covered by my warranty. I appreciated that... My brakes started making noise 2 1/2 years ago. Once again I took my car to them. They took the time to look at my brakes and again, they turned me away. The problem wasn't hazardous and there was plenty of brake materials left. I've taken the car back to them several times to check on the brakes and each time I'm reassured there isn't a problem. I was told they would replace the brakes if I insisted but it wasn't necessary. I have to say, this is something that's gone missing, honesty. How many repair shops would turn you away for unnecessary repairs and how many will take advantage of you? My suggestion, go to Hudson Import Service in Mt Pleasant, SC... They are friendly and don't take advantage of the customer. read more

If you need to have a used car checked for problems such as we did with a Volvo hardtop convertible that we were thinking about buying, this is absolutely the place to go. For under $150 you will have either confidence, or in our case a rejection, of a suitable vehicle. As it turned out, we paid a little extra money than we were planning on doing because they had a 2012 Acura Sport Wagon which was frankly just too good to pass up. It is been interesting that they not only service Imports but have three or four used vehicles at a time for sale . We purchased that vehicle with my mother-in-law in tow who saw a 2011 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 which was exactly what she was looking for with relatively low mileage of 60000 miles. She liked the price and bought it, picking it up later this week. Philip handles the used vehicle sales while Cliff is the owner of this wonderful service place with eight service bays. Was in and out in a zip. I found this place when looking for a shop that really understood Volkswagens. They require that you book an appointment vs stopping by, which allows them to control the flow of their work and thus get your car in and it on time. Some things I noticed on my first visit here that stood out: 1) they keep an electronic copy of your service records that you can access online at any time. You get an email after your visit and ask your history is right there. Boom! 2) they offer a shuttle service to get you to and from the shop while your car is in their care 3) if you can't pick your car up when it's ready, they keep it brings a secured, tall fence area. 4) they give you a free inside/outside car wash coupon to Cactus Auto Wash up 17! Very interested to see how this shop pans out for me over time. So far, really glad I found it! read more

I told him my issues and he was honest and up front about the potential cost to me, and helped me navigate my warranty that I had never used before. He got me scheduled quickly. Hudson's is all about long term relationships and not quick cash grabs. They want to keep your business and they are extremely honest. (They have even sent me to the dealership for a few things that they admitted would be less expensive to handle there). If your automobile plan includes driving older foreign cars this place should be on speed dial. They have kept various cars we have owned humming smoothly even with 270K miles on some of them! Johnny and Cliff have helped us so many times we actually will not buy any car they cannot service. Notes: They do not work on BMW's. Alternator went out on my Acura and called around a few places near me. Hudson was the only ones who actually helped before I came in. Others wouldn't quote me or anything unless I had the car at the shop. Needless to say when I called Hudsons. They answered..asked me what was going on. Told me "yup sounds like an alternator, gave me a quote, and even told me how he made it from the bridge to the shop when his was going out. Guess what? Our air-conditioning broke on our way from the Midwest to the Carolinas. I was, of course, freaking out to be so far from our trusted mechanics at home. I found Cliff through Yelp, and I couldn't have been luckier. He was SO helpful! I called to see about making an appointment while we were in town, and he talked to me at length about the possible problems and fixes, and he was upfront about all scenarios and costs. He ultimately convinced us to get the service through the dealership as the warranty on the work would transfer to our home dealership...it was so honest and decent of him to turn away expensive work in our best interests. Anyone with a foreign car should know about Hudson Import. They are without a doubt the most trusted car repair shop I've dealt with in my 17 years of driving. As a matter of fact, I just switch from a Dodge to a Nissan, and the fact that I could use Hudson's again was a determining factor. They are very knowledgeable and extremely nice. I am not sure if it is a family run business but it does have that feel. I had my Dodge for 5 years, then came back to Hudson and they remembered me from past dealings. After a phone call asking about bringing my Subaru in for an estimate, they say bring it in, no problem. On arrival, Lady at the desk asks if we had an appointment. We explain the phone call. Nope we needed an appointment. And they don't repair subarus. Great. So. After driving across town, i still have a sick Subaru. I was late to work. Huge inconvenience. I have a 2013 VW Tiguan that I bought from Lowcountry VW. My turbocharger recirculation valve was leaking and I had it diagnosed while I was out of town. A couple of weeks later I was getting ready to go back out of town and figured that I needed to get it fixed. Found out that it was a $2400 repair when I called VW. I was shocked so I thought I better call around to check out prices. When I spoke to Cliff, he let me know that it should be covered by my warranty except I was now about 100 miles over 60k. We've lived in Charleston area for about 20 years and from this point forward we will only take our cars to Hudson. They are unbelievably knowledgeable and honest. They will not be the least expensive out there, but I guarantee that you will save money in the long run by their honesty. Admittedly, I was doubtful of his glowing recommendation at first (as a female I was used to getting jerked around by the automotive industry!) but after this many years, it is the only place I take my car and the only shop I recommend. Cliff, Johnny and Stephanie have always been awesome in explaining what maintenance needs to be done now, what is on the horizon and what is not needed. (They will not try to sell you a service you don't need...refreshing!) They are fast, efficient and have gone the extra mile (more than once!) by fitting my car in at the last minute, thereby saving me from being stranded along the road. As a female, I've always dreaded taking my car to get serviced or repaired. There have definitely been times where I've felt taken advantage of just because of my age and sex. From my first phone conversation with Cliff, I have always felt comfortable taking my car to Hudson's. I had an older Volkswagen that I was planning on selling. Lowcountry VW had told me I needed to pump thousands into all these crucial repairs. I didn't buy it and took it to Hudson's. Since then, Cliff has always been honest about letting me know what things I should and shouldn't spend time and money on getting fixed. They're probably more expensive than others but I think it's completely worth it. I've always been pleased with everyone from Hudson's. They truly excel with customer service. I am appalled at the conversation my husband just had with someone in your service department.. After explaining to this person that we had bought two used cars He was told that we had just bought two of the worst cars possible and basically degraded him during the entire conversation.. Myself and my husband are very mechanically inclined and not stupid as he made my husband feel during his phone call.. Kept telling him he had bought second rate parts and that he would eventually have to spend 4 times as much on the actual dealer part when the parts we had just purchased failed.. This is an untrue statement again as we are both mechanically inclined and have used aftermarket parts with no issues whatsoever before.. We are also a small business owner and would never speak to our customers in this manner.. I am just reeling from the conversation he had and not what he or myself needed to be told when calling around trying to find a reliable mechanic.. read more
