They converted an old historical building into a large bookstore. As soon as you enter the store you feel the classic renovation and great vibes. Other Barnes and Noble have the same regular retail feel but this location has a vintage originality that you don't find anywhere else. There were three floors filled with books of varying types. It was surprisingly filled with college kids and tourists who were in the area. I was like a kid in the candy store. I went from browsing nonfiction to graphic novels to self-help books. I was able to find a seat and spend my evening going through a good classic self-help book. The only downside was that it was almost nine and the store was closing. I had to head down and make my way out. I wished I had a longer stay in DC to come back here. Most of the Barnes and Noble stores in my area were closing down so it was great to experience a classic bookstore again.

( yeah, I know the titles are the same but it depends on what kind of charter we're on) Driver's there are plenty of bus parking right along the side walk next to his business. Like I told my students "Don't let your eyes overload your wallet ". With his prices, you will walk outta there with unique souvenirs for everyone you know and love and even more for yourself. Oh yeah, his drinks are cold and goes down just right on hot days like today! I recommend Abe's because Tour Groups as well as the Charter Driver are on a strict schedule. As a driver, we can only drive 10hrs a day and the many groups we charter desire we drive the entire 10 hours. If I was a passenger, I would want the same seeing that they rent the bus for the entire drivers 10 hours. If I can elevate a stop AND keep them happy that warms my heart AND I can get to the Hotel on time, in bed so I can rest my nerves. Now speaking as a Professional Tour Driver, it's VERY important that our passengers are happy because if they aren't WE get stressed because they start to complain about every little thing we do. Majority of the time, the passengers ask for our OPINION for the best places to eat AND shop. AS a tourist myself, I want the best bang for my buck when it comes to spending my money in ANY capacity. On my FIRST visit to ABES on the request of the Tour Guide, I was able to find GIFTS for myself and loved ones without paying for over priced unique gifts. Up to date, 90 percent of my gifts for myself have been magnets and shot glasses. I'm not spending another dime on them being that I've later saw the same glasses and magnets I could buy the same magnets at a truck stop and CHEAPER. I don't buy my family many souvenirs because they chunk them in a drawer or regift them at Christmas. The selection was not too big, and primarily consisted of economics, government, or political science books. On top of this they seemed to be a bit on the dated side. The layout also made it a tad difficult to browse without feeling you're getting into somebodies personal business as the tables are right in the middle of the U of shelves, so if somebody is sitting at the tables you'll have to navigate quite close to them to see anything. They also have a passport photo section as they're right next to the passport office, which is convenient I guess. Prices seemed fair though and it was organized well. If I'm walking past I might swing on by, but given the plethora of fantastic used bookshops in dc i would rather go to, I don't see myself really going back very often

The price for the photo was priced slightly higher, and I understood it is for the convenience. They also have a cafe, and I ordered a cafe latte while I was here. The cafw also has a few pastries and snacks They have tables and chairs outside on the brick sidewalk, which made for a relatively stress free experience. The folks who helped me with the photo was cordial, and there was literally no stress involved getting this part of the required photo done.

I bought "Homegoing" by Yaa Gyasi thanks to the thoughtful "staff pick" recommendations they have on little notecards for various reads around the store. They even have a dedicated children's area with a little play space for kiddos, and a cafe serving up baked goods and beverages for purchase. Highly recommend visiting this local neighborhood gem.

On a Thursday evening it was very easy for me to find parking right up front and pay the meter for an hour. The event started on time and we were able to do a Q&A with the authors (who are now NY best sellers, woot woot). After the Q&A we all stood in line to get our books signed. Everything was well organized so the line went by quickly. Kristely at the front desk was super helpful and also helped me out with a glass of wine. This will definitely be my new hangout spot to come and enjoy a drink while I indulge in a new book or two. Thank you so much Solid State for a memorable experience.
