Beautifully organized, colorful, and decorated space offering a wide variety of books, local gifts, and artisan goods + crafts. I bought "Homegoing" by Yaa Gyasi thanks to the thoughtful "staff pick" recommendations they have on little notecards for various reads around the store. They even have a dedicated children's area with a little play space for kiddos, and a cafe serving up baked goods and beverages for purchase. Highly recommend visiting this local neighborhood gem.

On a Thursday evening it was very easy for me to find parking right up front and pay the meter for an hour. The event started on time and we were able to do a Q&A with the authors (who are now NY best sellers, woot woot). After the Q&A we all stood in line to get our books signed. Everything was well organized so the line went by quickly. Kristely at the front desk was super helpful and also helped me out with a glass of wine. This will definitely be my new hangout spot to come and enjoy a drink while I indulge in a new book or two. Thank you so much Solid State for a memorable experience.

This bookstore is small but they have mounds and mounds of vintage type books. They have…read moreeverything categorized neatly, and I spent a good twenty minutes just perusing the collections. I found several titles from the past including "Not on my watch", "Mother Mary comes to me", and Linford Fisher's "Stealing America". Taylor Jenkinsfried's "Atmosphere" grabbed my attention for about ten minutes which was intriguing. I probably would spent much more time here if they had any place to sit down. There are 2 levels here, and pretty much every square inch is filled with some old relics. I think I will come back sometime, this time with my reading glasses.

Of course it even had that classic book smell. My favorite. There is an upstairs and a downstairs. It can be a little tight depending on the amount of customers inside. There is a wide range o books. Of course there is a lot of political themed books, its the area we are in. I was lucky to find Kamala Harris's book, "107 Days." Pricing was what I expected and supporting a local book store than the large box store down the street was where my heart was at. The books were well organized, and everything was nicely categorized. There was one employee working. They were not super engaging, but I chalk that up to library atmosphere. But, whenever they were asked a questions they were helpful. There is a lot of local advertising and they are supportive of the LGBTQ population.

And the service is friendly, which is so important and relatively rare in indies. I've been to so many other indies where the staff are just weirdly hostile or look like they can't care less about customer service just because they're intellectual or whatever. This store makes me feel good about not buying from Amazon, whereas some other bookstores just lecture you about it and don't do anything to make you want to stay and spend money. It does get crowded on weekends. Also, be prepared to overhear lots of 20-somethings talk to each other like they're trying to impress. Just the nature of a certain overeducated segment of DC and the neighborhood.

Book signings often take place here as well. Such an incredible selection of books. They've got rare books, used books, new books, and out of print books, banned books, and LGBTQ+ books. They also sell boutique items like pens and postcards. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I have spent hours just getting lost in books here. It's a wonderful way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

The inside is like an active library reading room. Folks in computers, pads, etc. reading and intellectualizing. Soft progressive music in the air. On top of that, they're a true community bookstore, giving back by providing free meals to people in need, which I find really admirable. My go-to order is usually an iced coffee (or hot, depending on the day), but I've also had their biscuit with egg, cheese, and bacon a few times. That biscuit is perfectly fluffy, the egg is creamy, and the bacon is on point--so good that I've thought about ordering a side of bacon just to have more. If you're in the area and need a cozy spot to work, this is it. I love that they have plenty of outlets (a rarity!) and even window seating. Great coffee, great food, and a mission worth supporting.
