While we were shopping, my son needed to use the bathroom. I asked the two employees working whether he could use the restroom and was told no, there was no bathroom he could use and we could try down the street. He is three years old. I find that especially troubling for a bookstore that has a dedicated children's section, welcomes families into its stores, and presents itself as a community institution. Anyone who regularly spends time with toddlers understands that a three-year-old cannot simply "hold it" or plan bathroom breaks around a store's restroom policy. Independent bookstores routinely ask customers to support them rather than defaulting to Amazon and other large retailers. I want to support local bookstores. But supporting a local business is supposed to mean something more than simply paying a higher price for the same book. It should mean receiving the kind of humanity, judgment, and sense of community that we are told makes local institutions worth preserving. I walked into Politics and Prose prepared to purchase an entire list of books. Instead, I walked out without buying anything, and I have no intention of bringing my family back. If a business actively invites young children into its space, refusing to allow a three-year-old to use a restroom when he needs one is a remarkably poor way to treat that community. This was not the experience I expected from Politics and Prose, and it fundamentally changed the way I view the store.

Note: You won't find the latest novel that's being adapted into a movie here. I happened to find a tiny book about DC that I had been wanting to buy for a roughly a year. When I saw it on the shelf and discounted for only $5, I knew I had to have it! The staff was very friendly and let me know that I happened to snag the last copy too!
