Shiner on tap... and a quiet little back porch patio to sit back and drink it. Unfortunately they no longer have the VHS collection. I brought my VCR just for that purpose. Oh well guess we're Netflix and chill tonight. Still a great spot. Blue Bell ice cream on a cone makes me wana try and beer float next time. Howard's is such a cool Texas stop near shiner. The first time we came here was a suggestion from our tour guide at shiner brewery since they can't sell any shiner beer at the brewery. We pulled up and thought "surely this isn't the right place." But yes it is! Walk in to the front counter and you can order fresh shiner beer on tap right at the counter. They also have a cute little "Biergarten" in the back with seating and fans, where you can sit and enjoy your beer. Shiner, Texas........I was brought here by my coworker who lives in Shiner, Texas (population sub 4000). He assured me that going to Howard's was a glimpse into the local's lives in Shiner, Texas. Roll up to Howards - an unassuming gas station with mini mart, however, at the back of the store is the famous draft station.......mmmm.....let the beer flow. We grabbed a couple of pints in plastic cups and headed to the back of the station. I think the beers cost like $1.75 or $2 a beer for 16 oz of draft beer? Yeah.........it tastes so good when it hits your lips........ I must say it certainly was a taste of life in Central Texas -- definitely not the "OC" -- truly 1500 miles away from LA/OC. There's cool signage of Shiner and Shiner Beers all over the place -- it has a very local, chill feel to it. You feel like you're drinking in someone's backyard..... Everyone knows (or has seen) everyone in the small town, and the beer drinkers head over to Howards for a couple of cold ones (or 6) and a smoke after work. (Minus 1 star for the smoking......yuck.....at least it's outside.) Howard's is definitely a must stop if you're in Shiner, Texas. read more

I know, I am reviewing a gas station. But Howard's is more than your average gas station. After a couple hours down the road at the Shiner Brewing Company drinking free samples and you're still in the mood for some more, then you need to get in your car and drive to this magical gas station. Just drive to THE light in Shiner and take a right. As soon as you walk in you see it. Taps! They have every Shiner beer on tap, even seasonals and limited editions, and each one only costs $1.75!! They serve in plastic cups but it is a full pint of beer. For only $1.75!! I don't see how this is legal. Once you have your drink walk back by the microwaves and out the rear exit and find yourself in a covered beer garden/patio to enjoy your drink while looking at all the vintage and rusting gas station and Shiner Brewery signs. To make this place even more amazing they have a nice selection of hand-dipped Blue Bell ice cream, movie rentals and bullets! What else could you possibly need? Make sure to have a designated driver when you visit Shiner, TX. read more

If you're in shiner and want a beer at a bar then this place is pretty cool to do it at. Only down side is when we stopped we were pretty hungry and they only have gas station food. TV in the back with band playing at times. 5$ minimum on cards and beers were 2$ each! read more

Howard's looks like a run of the mill gas station from the outside, but is everything but once you step inside. Besides the collection of hundreds of VHS movies for sale, Howard's offers fresh Shiner for only $1.75 per pint to passersby and a rustic environment, perfect for a quick beer. We arrived at Howard's after taking the brewery tour and we had a pint of the new Shiner Pale Ale, and I've never tasted Shiner so fresh -- even at the brewery tour. I recommend a trip to Howard's after you take the tour, and BBQ in Lockhart after you've downed a few brews on the Howard's back porch. read more

Alright, I have to admit that it's a bit strange Yelping about a gas station, but I guess this one ain't a bad one to talk about online. We were guided here by our tour guide at the Spoetzl Brewery. Nay, she INSISTED that we go to this gas station. They actually offered much of the same souvenirs that the Shiner Brewery offered, but a bit cheaper, and covered in dust. They have a simply GIGANTIC VHS movie selection. So if VHS is still your thing, this is your place. They offer beer to go. Need I say more? I'm not just talking about tall boys and long necks. They will pour you a giant mug of frosty Shiner Beer for the ride home. And it's cheap. It's not especially clean in here. The bathroom looks like it was last cleaned sometime long ago, and much of the merchandise is covered in dust or sun faded. Obviously, this isn't as popular as some destinations in Shiner, but any gas station that serves beer on tap to go, I can't argue with. read more

Coming from Austin, my favorite itinerary is the early tour at Shiner, a stop at Howard's for a real size beer, a bathroom break at Buc-ee's and then Lockhart on the way home for the best BBQ in Texas. read more

One of the 3 bars in Shiner: Howard's, Antiques, and Tenth Inning. Howard's is a one stop shop for Blue Bell's, locals, movies on VHS, and draft beer. Also, open container laws apparently stop outside the Shiner city limits, so they are happy to pour you one to go. That is the friendliness and disregard for legality that I like to see! There are only two small tables, so wear comfortable shoes and look forward to standing in the aisles and making small talk with the locals in the evening. You should also have some Blue Bell's ice cream with your beer. I recommend that course of action. read more

This is a gem for Shiner. I laugh that it's one of the only places in the world where you can fill up your tank, rent a VHS tape, buy ammo and get a pint of the freshest Shiner beer available. Howard Gloor and Bill Pekar have a great lineup of Texas singer/songwriter music during the summers, and a seemingly constant stream of interesting characters and stories. If you're looking for a down-to-earth, friendly stop, this is the place. read more

This isn't a place you go wearing heels and pearls but it is a great hangout. There's a little grocery inside and it's the best/only place for videos in Shiner. The hangout area is the beergarden in the back. You can be there for hours. Don't buy your gas here, it's pricey. But everything else is great. Howard is super chill and a man of many talents. He's a former dentist btw so that's cool. Talk him up! read more

WoW man this place Rocks! This is my third time here and man.... I talked to the wonderful ladys at the Shiner brewery and asked them where was the first delivery and she said Howards. Yep... this is the official, beer, bait, ammo, but you can have a seat and drink Ice Cold Beer On Tap! and if your lucky to come thru on the weekend... you can listen to some Awesome live music out back. Where else can you get $2 pints, ammo, and VHS movies? We enjoyed the Biergarten in back, complete with ancient Shiner signs and crusty but friendly locals. Howards is the place where I take all shiner visitors. Great little spot to grab a beer and meet the locals. I know, I am one.
