I am extremely surprised and disappointed to learn that the SPCA charges people who are interested in volunteering with them $40.00 up front just to submit a volunteer application. I think that is very elitist and limits individuals who would be amazing volunteers for their animals (who need amazing volunteers) from being a part of the SPCA volunteer team because it costs to volunteer. Poor experience trying to adopt a horse. After investing time in the process, I was misled to believe all was approved to adopt Quilla, a mare in Hempstead. In a bait and switch operation, the manager rudely pushed me (using his templated emails) to a non-viable gelding at the other facility, with no info about the other horse, or dialog, or response to my questions. I was originally looking for a place to call for a German Shepard down the road from us that wines and yelps all day long. During our freeze this year the dog was running around in the cold, cold rainy weather. I called it over to me and he stunk big time (it took a bit but he finally came to me), was very skinny and had his tail between his legs. This is a scared dog. He was a very friendly loving dog as he kept licking on me. I dried him off a bit and laid a blanket down for him but he took off again. First of all it is hard to even find a place on the weekend to call, no one really cares. I do not know where these places hire their employees, but they all could use a few training lessons in my opinion. Are animals not supposed to get hurt or beaten or go without eating on the weekends? After reading the reviews for this place place, its sounds par for the course. These employees are not working here for the love of helping animals, its only a paycheck to them. Where they trained properly? Did they forget why they started in the first place? Were they hired just to fill a slot so money could roll back in? All animals need love and attention! If you do not have the heart for helping these poor babies, DO NOT APPLY!! We live nearby and would always come look for an addition to our family and we found our Sophie girl 4th of July weekend! Everyone was really helpful and gave us a lot of information on Sophie's back story. She was a stray who was found with a zip tie on her paw. I don't know who would do that to an animal but we are grateful to the SPCA for saving her. She has brought so much joy to my husband and I. We found out the even taught her how to sit. They only let people in at the beginning of the hour. So for example we showed up at 4:30 but weren't able to go inside until 5:00-5:15. There were literally two cars in the parking lot. Had a neighbors dog point that I had an injured raccoon. His leg was broken, and he was in pretty bad shape, but he had the will to keep going. I fed him a banana and water which he appreciated. Hands down the BEST shelter in Houston, quite possibly all of Texas. The Houston SPCA staff works tirelessly every day to ensure the best care is taken for their animals, and that they find their forever homes. All staff members are helpful every time I visit, and they make great impressions. I've adopted 3 animals from the Houston SPCA, and yes shelter animals may come with some behavioral issues due to their past experiences because of where they came from, but that is something as an owner you should be prepared for. It has been such a delight taking care of my babies that came from the Houston SPCA. I adopted a puppy from the Houston SPCA and I refuse to go back: 1. Their "visiting" policies are strict. You can't play with a dog unless you've gone through an interview process and get approved to visit a dog. Then you'll give your approval pass to one of the attendants and they will get you a dog and send you a room to socialize with it. 2. When I adopted my puppy (first puppy I've ever adopted), they did not tell me that I was suppose to get 3 shots of distemper and neither the vet that they referred to me either. 3. My puppy died from distemper 2 months after I adopted him. The vet even said that he had a few cases of dogs with distemper that were recently diagnosed adopted from SPCA. I'm disappointed that they have such strict policies on visitation but not on quarantine. read more

I came here when I was ready to adopt a cat. The staff were all very helpful and kind, and brought in several different cats for me to get to know before I finally settled on a sweet little black female cat named Sissy. I visited her a second time before deciding she was the one, and when I was ready the adoption process was very easy. They gave me a thorough medical history, a large folder of very helpful information, and a free bag of food she'd been eating. They also gave her one final flea/tick treatment before sending her home with me. Sissy had been brought up to date with all of her shots, had been spayed and microchipped, and had been tested for feline aids and HIV (which is not cheap on its own). I understand this is the norm for animals they take in. When you adopt from this SPCA you are also given a free comprehensive exam from the VCA within five days of adoption; Sissy needed treatment for worms and east mites, which would have been pretty expensive but cost me nothing...thank goodness! All in all, I am very pleased with my adoption experience from here. The SPCA did a great job of taking care of Sissy when she was in their care, and did a fabulous job of helping me get started as a new pet owner. We are both so very happy and grateful! read more

Had a great experience adopting my Pearl. When my partner and I decided we were ready for a pet, we decided to adopt from this rescue shelter. I saw my dog online and went to go find her that same day. I was immediately allowed to play with her in the small room and outside. We took her home the next day. Since she was a big dog (7 months) she cost $95 but this included her up to date shots, spaying, chipping, her medical history at the SPCA, a bag of Science Diet dog food, a leash, and a $500 voucher to a VCA hospital. She did end up having a fungus, but I took her to the VCA the next day and got her initial examination, a fecal exam, scab scrap, and two medicines for free. Before the discount, the invoice was at $300, so it was really helpful that the SPCA includes that voucher. Other than that, the facilities were not as sad as I expected and were easily accessible. All you do is walk in and go anywhere that isn't prohibited entry. My dog was a stray that someone found and brought in, but she has been a great addition to our family. She's beautiful, obedient, and I'm so pleased that we could give her a home. I'm not sure about the euthanasia policy here but their website does indicate that they are a no kill shelter, couldn't say more about it. read more

WE JUST ADOPTED TWO ADORABLE KITTENS YESTERDAY!!!!!! Yes, the all caps was necessary, as were all the exclamation points. Perhaps I should add more to get my point across? THEY ARE THE SWEETEST KITTENS IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!! Am I getting my point across? THEY CAME NEUTERED AND SPAYED (YAY TO POPULATION CONTROL) AND COST US A WHOPPING $75 ALL TOGETHER!!!!!!! They were abandoned at last week and are only three months old. You can't just adopt one. I dare you to look in the eyes of a kitten and leave their sibling behind. I dare you. Okay, so for some nitty gritty info that isn't just about my excitement. We'd been playing with the idea of adopting a cat for a while. We really love dogs, but we want a bigger dog and living in our tiny apartment really isn't fair. So, we decided to look into some cats. Pets are expensive! And since the Petco-esq store was out of the question, we decided to check out Houston's SPCA on the recommendation of a co-worker. Let me stop for a second and say that I used to volunteer at a cat shelter in high school and I think that's where all my reservations came from when I thought about adopting from a shelter. The shelter in Alaska was full of really, really mistreated cats who ranged from full on hatred/fear of all humans to those who were so starved for any kind of love or attention that they just wouldn't leave you alone. Plus, they had a kitty cancer room which is pretty much the most heartbreaking thing in the world. That being said, I was a bit nervous about coming here since I didn't want to end up seeing a bunch of animals distraught and mistreated. Complete opposite. The animals were all living in CLEAN environments--and most of them had a place of their own. A few of them were groups together if they were litter mates (like ours). You can go from "cage" to cage and read the specs--they include as much information as possible. Many of these were given up because of too many pets or they were moving. Surprisingly few were just abandoned. The doggie section was similar, though a bit sadder. The smaller ones were sweet and looked like they'd be easy to train and take home. However, some of the larger dogs had obviously be mistreated and would take a lot of socialization before they made good pets. Oh, they also have rabbits. I, for some odd reason, have a strange dislike to the idea of a rabbit as a pet so I avoided them. From what I could see, most of the animals were not "fixed" yet, but as soon as you chose to adopt one (or two in our case!), they set up an appointment to spay or neuter them the next day. The whole process is very painless and quick. You go in, get screened to see if you qualify to be a pet owner. Then you go to the section of the type of animal you want. You'll get a private room to hang out with your potential addition and it is a great bonding time. They don't rush you and there's no pressure at all to adopt. Once we picked out our two new family members, we were walked over to the adoption section and filled out the paperwork. It took 10 minutes (I was anticipating something like signing a car lease!) and we were saying goodbye to our kittens before we knew it. We went back the next day and picked them up. If you're thinking about a pet, I would definitely encourage you to at least check out SPCA before buying. All the staff and volunteers are so friendly and generous with their time--you can tell that they want to be there. These pets need good homes and they have anything that ranges from 8 weeks old to a few years old. I hate that they are forced to do away with some because they out of room, resources, and money to care for them. After all, life in a cage is no way to live. I chose to adopt here for that reason. The SPCA has so many pets who need a good home. The animals there really deserve a chance. I made several visits before finding the right fit. It's tough because these cats & dogs are so adorable & sweet- but, I'm so allergic to most of them. It was really hard to walk away empty handed, itching, and crying the first few visits. Then, I saw my wired-hair pup, Scout. Before signing the papers, I spent a good amount of time with her - I petted, played & allowed her lick until she eventually fell asleep with her head in my lap. Fifteen minutes later-- she was sleeping on my lap & I was still allergy free. How could I say no to that? I had to wait a few days to bring her home since they needed to spay & microchip her- which was fine with me! They also provided me with a bag of dog food & my first visit to the vet is free since I adopted. I think the SPCA is doing a great job at caring for the uncared for & discarded. After calling the Houston Animal Control, Houston SPCA, Katy Animal Control and finally Fort Bend Animal Control. an injured grey blue heron was left to suffer from an attack for nearly 48 hrs due to a jurisdictional conflict. Finally, my last resort, Fort Bend County was able to retrieve and rescue the animal and hopefully it will live. I have lost every bit of respect for the first three organizations who refuse to connect the dots to get the right response and support. One it's not the facilities they lack the resources and training like most non-profits! If you want to blame anyone, you should point the finger towards the government. Yesterday my boyfriend and I adopted a cat as our first pet, at our first apartment together. The process was easy and they are handling covid precautions very well. Make sure to look online and pick out a few cats you're interested in before you head to the shelter to make the process easier. Then you just call to make an appointment, pay a deposit and then when your appointment comes just meet the security guard out front and wait until they call you, after that you go into the play room and they will bring you the cat you are interested in to see how y'all interact with each other. I was forced to give my beloved dog that I had since he was two months up three days ago. He got sick and I took him to the emergency room but he needs more care and I didn't have the money. To save my dogs life I signed him over to the SPCA. Yesterday when I enquirer about him I was told he is no longer my dog. These people are heartless why would they want to take my dog. I only sighed him over because I had no other recourse to get him the help he needs. Anyone who love there dog would have done anything to save their life. HORRIBLE. I'm fully convinced these people are not interested in helping injured animals. A stray cat got attacked by another animal and is clearly suffering from a skin disease. When I arrived at SPCA they looked at him and said they will not accept him because he is not badly injured. Do these pictures not look injured? The person at the front desk "Virginia" didn't even glance at him and told me to leave. When I asked her what I can do for this stray she just shrugged and said that she only accepts animals that are BADLY BLEEDING and I was taking away the chance for a real animal in need. What was ironic was that she was accepting another animal at the same time that was not injured, sick, or bleeding. It felt like I was being discriminated against based on my race since Virgina didn't have any issues accepting a HEALTHY animal from a white owner but didn't even bother being polite, courteous, or considerate of the fact that I went out of my way to drive this animal to the rehoming center when I could've just left it. Virginia also went as far as implying that this was my pet and I was lying about it being a stray. Seriously? It's unbelievable that someone working her has the nerve to speak to people like she did to me. Even worse was that she got annoyed and left me standing their by myself and complained to her coworker, Sara about me unaware (or maybe aware) that I could hear her from behind the door. Virginia's snarky attitude was just horrible but she appeared snug that this experience would not have any affect on her job since she is probably used to treating non-white people like this without any consequences. read more

My goodness, where do I start?!?! This place knocked my socks off. The facility is amazingly clean and well cared for. It was so neat to be able to get into some of the cat enclosures and pet the cats. The dog kennels were all really clean and it seemed like the dogs were all in good spirits (which most likely comes from all of the attention that they get). There were volunteers galore and everyone was really welcoming. It's neat that this location cares for wild animals as well. Definitely come here if you're looking to adopt or even just to say hi to the animals. read more

Great service! We drove a long way for Eddy but then we saw Penny too, a tripod(three legs)...so loving! So we adopted both of them! They are little joys! Service was fast and efficient and I liked that they asked questions to make sure they were going to a safe and forever home. Might rename her Triniti, Trini for short. She is so petite and delicate. I'm very happy with how this shelter runs, it's clean and the workers really care. I'd recommend it to others. Now to settle them in with my 10 yr. old, 17 lb. sassy Maine Coon girl. Someone said their dog they took home had fleas and ticks. Didn't you look at that BEFORE you adopted this dog? I checked my kittens for them. It's not that hard. No parasites whatsoever. There's always risks with a new pet/family member. Think before you adopt and check the animal out. With all those animals in there, some will always slip in with some problems before they can set them right and get them healthy. It's an animal, they WILL have problems from time to time. Instead of taking it back, why didn't you just put some drops on it and call it good? Apparently you didn't love the poor pooch enough to do so. The shelter may not be to blame. When they put drops on it (and by law they have to do that), it can take some days for them all to die. read more

PLEASE DO NOT RELY ON SPCA! I called in a kitty at 8PM that had been run over and was told they would pick it up shortly, however, when I called again in the morning at 10AM, 1) the front desk receptionist ( Alondra Acosta) could not find the incident in the system and 2) when she "finally" did, she said it still hadn't been picked up. It's been HOURS. When I was trying to explain to the receptionist that I kept checking to see if the kitty had been picked up, she did explain that there were several other animals that needed to be picked up as well and they were doing the best that they could which i do understand. However, I did get upset at that because i only imagined the kitty laying in pain for 12+ hours and everyone i called said I couldn't bring him in. The front desk receptionist eventually told me with an attitude that if i really wanted to help the kitty i could drive it in myself and hung up on me which also made me question their customer service. An organization like that should not act that way and should be more reliable. read more

Bleh. Not impressed. It's clean and well laid out. It's air conditioned and organized. But that's the end of the good things I have to say. For the amount of money that this place recieves in donations every year I was very much disappointed with a few things. First the dogs were going insane and I did not see anyone taking them out to walk or excercise. Poop in every single kennel which means these poor animals probably held it in for a while before they couldn't anymore. I did see some lazy employees chatting at the front desk though. Next, the small amount of animals that they are putting here makes this place practically worthless. Once again with the donations they are getting they could have expanded to save more animals. Lastly I noticed that their fee to adopt an animal was ridiculous. 200 for an old ugly mutt that just needs a home? Down the street the humane society is doing a 2 for 30 dollars deal if you take home adult and senior animals but SPCA wants to milk the public for all its worth like this? Disgusting. I've been donating to the SPCA for years because I believe in the cause but I feel like they are spending all the money on overhead and not enough on the animals. My dog is for the most part so well behaved and obedient. For the split second that I looked away, he decided that it would be a fun idea to stick his head under a bar fence today. We panicked, called 911 and they redirected us to SPCA. Unfortunately we were told that they do not provide any type of service for this. Shrugged it off and didn't care that my dog was in distress. Thanks for nothing!! My question is this then why do you have a so called "INJURED ANIMAL RESCUE AMBULANCE?" Thankfully I took it upon myself, dug the dirt and put some oil around his neck/head to rescue my own dog. But had I not, it would have been a far worse situation. I always keep a close eye on my dog, but will have to keep a closer eye on him because I know I definitely cannot rely on calling SPCA for any help. I don't know why I am reviewing this place after getting my dog over there almost 4 years ago but I've been on a tear recently reviewing all these places on YELP and decided to see if the SPCA was on here and it is! I remember coming here many moons ago and finding our sweet canine pal as a little puppy. Needless to say my kids fell in love with the puppy and off we were adopting her and I must say from what I remember the process was very smooth and pain free. The facilities were very clean in my opinion and the staff was very helpful and informative! The adoption fee was very reasonable and included all her initial shots and a follow up for spaying. To this day we have this lovely dog who is like part of our family and she is a gem. We are glad we made a decision to adopt her from the SPCA and would recommend this place as a great source for finding loving animals or rescue dogs. I've been to almost every animal shelter in Houston.. and I really don't think it gets better than our very own Houston SPCA. Kittys are located in the front lobby. Every animal has a short description of the animals personality, name, age and any extra info. There's a small puppy room in the lobby to the right. I like to stop by at every animal so they can get a quick sniff.. and for the more friendly dogs, a few licks and pets through the metal cage :) Also, the kennels are usually pretty clean. I rarely see the animals in a messy, dirty cage. In the back are the large dogs separated by Female and Male. Don't be surprised if you smell a hint or a BIG whiff of poop. Just remember, you're in an animal shelter. Hellurr?! These four-legged friends are in need of homes and need as much affection as they can get.. so I love and appreciate that the facility has gracious volunteers that help clean, walk and play with the furry animals. We saw a beautiful, young Great Pyrenees on our way in and the volunteer kindly let us play with her before her walk. Even though this shelter is a ways out for me and I haven't dealt with their adoption process yet, I think it's the cleanliest and friendliest so far :) Please don't forget to drop some change or bills in the donation box on the way out. I like animals--sometimes more so than people. It breaks my heart to see so many animals in need of a good home. I do feel better knowing that the good folks of the Houston SPCA are here to care and nurture these kind souls until they can find their "forever home." They do more than just house these animals. Volunteers will take dogs on a walk and administer medical care to all animals. I appreciate the work these volunteers put into helping unwanted and neglected animals. A previous poster commented on how much it costs to adopt a dog. Take into consideration what it costs to save, rehabilitate, feed, house, and treat an injured animal and there you have it. Rather than going to a breeder, consider adopting a dog, cat or other exotic animal. If you are thinking of getting a dog or cat for your family, please think about saving one by adopting. We adopted two guinea pigs (Chop Stick and Egg Roll) from here two years ago. read more

Went in today to adopt a dog, with an appointment saw the dog I wanted and an employee wanted the same dog at the same time. I feel I should have been considered for the animal. I did have a 1st appointment. very disappointed. reevaluating as using this shelter. read more

I'd give no stars if I could! Just tried calling about a pitbull that's Malnourished wondering around my apartments. I call to see what can be done and was told they don't do adoptions for pit bulls! Y'all want to save animals yet discriminate on the breed. read more

ZERO information on feral cat spay and neuter programs? Really? The SPCA was born to be a caretaker of animals. All animals. Not just pets. Purposely, and knowingly being ignorant of programs to keep feral cats safe is a gross disregard of responsibility. Just adopted another puppy, turning into a Christmas tradition! Oh my! Both pups are great! Even came home potty trained. But I'm told they aren't a no kill shelter. Its sad, but since people are irresponsible I'm not sure what else they can do. read more
