Fair warning, the head person thinks she received her DVM at a school with a better reputation and education than Texas A&M vet school. My family is known for our love, attention and dedication to our dogs and she treated us like we were the most irresponsible pet owners ever because we followed the advise of our dog's doctor. She went so far as to quote laws that aren't even fact. Another thing is they draw you in with pictures of dogs on their website then they are no where to be found. Also, I hope none of y'all are there if an incident breaks out as they allow people well beyond the capacity of the building limits in at one time. I think the purpose behind this organization is great. They should definitely look for a better "leader". One more educated and caring. All in all I can't be too upset. My boyfriend adopted our dog from K9 angels rescue, and we would gladly do it again. I like K9 because they vaccinate, spay/neuter, and train the dogs. The foster parents are fantastic, and the dog is well trained by the foster parents. As a first time dog owner, I really appreciate that they have experienced dog parents to first help train and raise the dog. It's also comforting and reassuring to know that the dog is already properly vaccinated and spayed/neutered. The other 1-star reviews honestly sound like entitlement, where people didn't get the exact dog they wanted at the exact time when they wanted him/her. K9 angels rescue - a nonprofit, volunteer based organization - has high standards in who they let adopt their dogs, and it's their choice how they want to allow their dogs to be adopted. We were looking for a pair of dogs and saw K-9 Angels listings online. What is nice about this rescue is: they have an adoption center in Houston where all the adoptable dogs come on the weekends, and there are set hours when you can meet the dogs. This is much better and easier than trying to coordinate with different foster families to go visit in their home or have them come to yours. K-9 Angels doesn't send the pups home with you the day you meet them and fill out the application, which is also good. They evaluate the applications during the week, and tell you by the following Friday if you are approved to adopt. This helps them be sure the right applicant is getting the right dog. We were able to meet both dogs and play with them together in a visiting room, which showed us they weren't incompatible, and the next weekend we were able to take them both home. They are healthy and have their microchips (which you can register and the monitoring is free for the first year). They are adjusting to living together and with us and are adorable, happy dogs. We look around and the place is clean and all the volunteers are very friendly too. Fast forward, we came back home and brought our dog to see if he is getting along with the potential new addition. The registration lady is very very nice. She gave us lots of information Since Jason is a heartworm positive, they covered the medication for a year. Our lives changed when we were introduced to K-9 Angels. We found our sweet little pup, Ellie, formally known as BeeGee, through K-9 Angels and we could not be happier!! The process is simple and straight forward. We filled out an application and waited to be contacted for approval for adoption. Once we got the email (YAY!), we scheduled a meet and greet with her foster mom and had the opportunity to do a trial period to see how our senior pup, Katie, and Ellie would adjust to each other. Although they are still adjusting to each other, things are definitely progressing and now they are able to play together and I can see they are starting to bond. We can't wait to watch them grow up together! K-9 Angels is a wonderful group. Each dog or cat they rescue gets fostered by wonderful people during the week and then brought to the adoption center on Saturday and Sunday so the public can meet them. This organization does a fantastic job helping so many dogs. The pups all seemed to be well taken care of in their facility and I can't thank the fosters enough for taking such good care of Macey and Leo until we found each other! These 2 dogs were really a bonded pair and the folks at K-9 Angels just would not allow them to be separated. Thank you so much for doing that- these 2 are the sweetest pups and I can see how they would have been heartbroken had they been separated. I really like how the dogs are kept in foster homes and only brought into the shelter itself on weekends or events. The shelter itself was clean and organized and all the people working there were super nice. My boyfriend and I have fostered dogs through numerous organizations and have found great joy in it. Though it breaks your heart each time you say goodbye to the dog, you feel tremendous joy in knowing you aided in saving a dogs life. Having fostered with other organizations as well, we by far had the worst experience volunteering with this organization twice, and though we will undeniably continue fostering, we will do so through another organization. Our first experience left an incredibly bad taste in our mouth. When we arrived on Saturday to drop our foster at an adoption event, we were met by judgmental stares by those running the event and absolutely zero guidance on where to bring our foster dog. With other organizations, we also felt tremendous solace in being in touch with the person that adopts our foster and seeing updates. We've had ongoing relationships with every single former foster we've had. When we asked if there was any way to know who adopted our first foster, we were met with the response that that isn't common place at this organization and our only chance at ever seeing updates on this dog we had come to love as our own so much was very slim. We were basically expected to just drop this foster off, wondering if we'd ever see him again. Other organizations we've fostered with, being the one who has had the dog in our home and deeply understood their personality, we were given the option to partake in the choice of who adopts the dog. Whenever I offered any advice on the dogs personality, I was met with a very controlling attitude emphasizing that I basically had zero part in who adopted the dog. We also were incredibly jarred at one volunteer who kept screaming at a dog inside of his crate spraying him in the face and YELLING "SHAME ON YOU!!" Again and again. Also, the only way to hear updates on whether or not your foster has been adopted is to continuously check the Facebook group, thus hindering any weekend plans because you are unsure of whether or not you need to expect to drive to the center to retrieve the foster. We decided to give it another shot. As a couple with a very hectic schedule, the week to week foster opportunity worked for us. We fostered a dog that had come from an incredibly horrendous situation and he had suffered extreme trauma. We instantly fell in love with him, and my boyfriends grandmother did too. She lives out of state, but my boyfriend and I are flight attendants and can easily transport dogs on our lap with us anywhere for free. We even intended to fly all the way out to visit her to assist her in filling out the application and collecting the needed documents. She is a more than capable dog owner, having owned over 5 dogs in her lifetime. We dropped our foster off an evening early, so we could fly out of state to visit her and get moving on the application. When we went to drop him off, the foster coordinator was incredibly rude and basically insinuated that we were way out of line for believing my boyfriends grandmother, who is 85, would be able to care for our foster. This woman is 85 years old, but more active and capable than I am and ageism certainly does not sit well with me in the slightest. She went on to say that our foster "was crazy" and that she herself was 31 and could barely care for a puppy. Firstly, our foster is far from "crazy," he has physically lived inside of our home so we can vouch for that. He barks when he encounters something new but that's to be expected given his trauma and highly trainable. Secondly, he's not a puppy. He is 3 years old. Thirdly, we felt our intelligence was undermined. We are incredibly knowledgeable about the personality of dogs and we would never put our foster that had already been through so much in a compromising situation. We decided this morning not to bother flying out of state to assist his grandmother with the application because we were met with such discouraging news and I informed her that we could come to get him for the evening. We know he gets cold at night, he had no blanket and we didn't want him to spend another night at the adoption center alone. She coldly responded "actually he's being adopted right now." This was with ZERO consideration or empathy to the fact that we clearly had a family member interested in him. Additionally, I feel like every week, all I see are snarky comments between members of the fosters and administrators on the Facebook group. It doesn't seem like a positive or uplifting environment; and certainly not a group I feel comfortable being a part of. Volunteers, at the end of the day we all share the common goal of SAVING DOGS LIVES, and I feel this organization easily loses sight of that. As I mentioned, we will foster and volunteer and donate for the rest of our lives, but never again with K-9 angels. read more

Great people that care about getting dogs in a home. We adopted Jet (formerly Chaparro) and the staff at the rescue center were very knowledgeable and really committed to get all dogs into the right home. We had our eye on this little guy from their website and went in and were able to adopt him that weekend. The application process is easy but they do review to make sure they are going to a good home. They also make sure to educate you on what your puppy needs to be healthy and not catch a terrible disease. After adopting our puppy we had to come back to finish off his shots. Since he came from a foster home (as most dogs from here do) he came pretty much socialized and mostly potty trained. Here we are a few months later and I'm very happy we were able to adopt this little guy. Really glad he didn't end up on the street or at another shelter that might have had to put him down. read more

My husband and I lost one of our sweet cockapoos, Mocha, on March 25. She was "only" 11, and we'd been through so much with her, including back surgery. We still miss her three months later, but one of the hardest parts was how much her packmate, Puddin, suffered. She seemed depressed and not even interested in food. What made K-9 Angels so special was that they allowed us to introduce Puddin to any rescue we considered. My husband and Puddin chose a different dog than any of us expected. "Mr. Hops" (renamed from Chirp) is our first male dog in 25 years and very different from our cockapoos, but that is working out great. His energy has renewed Puddin's interest in longer walks, playing, and being more active. We're thankful that K-9 Angels exists and fosters these dogs so carefully. Alright to start off I am ALL about dogs and rescue. So when a stray dog followed my neighbor home from the park I tried to assist in finding placement. A man I had met fosters dogs for this rescue so I decided to inquire if this rescue would help out and I was shocked by the extremely rude and judging response I received from the rescue. Asking why I cannot just foster the dog myself and why can't I afford to take care of him myself. First off I have my own dog at home and this stray looked like he has mange and possibly fleas. Second of all, as a doctor I work long hours and up to 10 days at a time and simply cannot invest the time to train this dog, take him to the vet, foster him back to health and "bring him to weekend adoption events" as I work weekends. In the future if someone asks for help be kinder. I understand you can't save every dog but at least be nice about it. Just looked at other reviews and this judgmental nature seems to be a theme. I was set up to visit with a puppy and had also been approved ahead of time. The puppy had been returned from foster because of high energy, which is no fault to the puppy. This organization was made aware I currently have a dog who is 13, but very healthy and energetic. They were also made aware that I am very energetic and take owning an animal very serious and I would provide the needs of an energetic puppy. I had to drive across Houston with my other dog to do a meet and greet. The minute I walked in with my current dog, one of the employees took one look and shot us down. We were discriminated because my current dog was too old for an active puppy, when they don't even know how energetic my dog is. Since when is it the responsibility of the dog to make sure a new dog is kept entertained and trained? I will go out and buy a puppy, while the sheltered puppy waits for the perfect family, who can give her exercise, love, patience and great vet service, that could have been provided by me and my husband. read more

They actually are pretty judgmental here. I'm a military veteran seeking an emotional support animal after the recent loss of my little best friend. I waited in line only to watch the employee turn away from me as soon as it was my turn to receive help from her . She pretended to adjust the pamphlets and started to wander around straightening up other things like I was invisible. I finally received help from a different older lady who told me that they wouldn't allow me to adopt a puppy because I live in an apartment. According to her , apartment dwellers are "forced to walk their dog in the streets", which makes puppies more susceptible to picking up parvo and distemper, as they have less vaccines. (In my case , I live in an upscale gated community with lots of dog-walking space & the community keeps every resident's pet vaccine records on file. I never took my previous dog for walks in the streets of houston).This preference should definitely be posted on their site so that people don't drive out there to be let down. In addition , no phone number seems to be listed anywhere on their website to ask any questions in advance. read more

We had already filled out the application and sent it in beforehand. This post was not taken in light, and it has taken me about 2 months to decide what I wanted to say about this organization. I have decided to speak my mind, with hopes that the organization may move towards policies that support their volunteers. I wanted to help animals, I know the importance of foster homes in relation to children, having worked in the foster care system for approximately 10 years. The foster parents are the pinnacle of their existence, training, housing, donating time and money that includes gas money to drop the dogs off every weekend. When I took on my first two foster puppies and after working in the foster care system for as long as I have and having to grow some pretty thick skin, I didn't think I'd bond with any dog like I did. I've also never raised a puppy in my life and didn't know the power they can have over your heart. Long story short, I spent all my time with them and developed a deep connection, especially with Weasely, because the other one went to live in another home that would fit his medical needs. They were not cute, so ugly that the volunteer felt the need to apologize for their appearance when she dropped them off. They had been treated for mange and had fur missing everywhere. But I didn't care at all, they were perfect. After 3 months, lots of Instagram posts, long walks and runs, many texts between my parents with pictures to update them and countless hours training I finally gave in and asked the organization if I could adopt Weasely. I contacted the volunteer who I got the puppies from and she reached out via email to the adoption coordinators. I know they are busy so I waited patiently. That week I dropped him off reluctantly, cause I wanted to follow the rules, and asked about adopting him. What I received was very harsh words from the lady checking the dogs in. In a very crude tone that shammed me for asking, she basically said people like me are trying to take advantage of the system and find an easy way to adopt a dog. This felt terrible, I went home feeling miserable about myself, like I failed these puppies. I am a single woman, living in an apartment, and give back most of my time and energy to the community. I live a frugal life so I can give back, and first of all it is a shame that I felt nervous to tell them about my life based on reviews and people I've spoken to, whom let me know that there is a very particle population they cater to. I don't give myself much, and this puppy had given me so much comfort. After a long day I was so happy to see him waiting for me and thoroughly enjoyed worked to train him. There were no interests that week in adopting him so I was able to take him home for another week. I picked him up on Sunday and 5 more days went by and I realized a cant give up. The thought of loosing him was terrifying I dropped him off again and wrote another email to more people working in the organization. The response I received was even more devastating, they stated that there was a couple who had submitted an adoption application, who worked from their home and they took priority. I let them know that I had expressed interest in the puppy weeks ago, but that didn't seem to matter. We went back and forth communicating and in the end the response was they had already committed to the couple and it was my responsibility to foster, I was an adult and would get over it. I dropped the dog off with the new parents the following week, crying my eyes out, and went home to my apartment to continue to cry my eyes out for three days. It has been about 2 months and my heart hurts every day for my friend. When I reached out to the foster parents they would praise me for how well the dog behaved and told me I should be a dog trainer. I was amazing. He didn't have one accident in a week, let them know when he needed to go out, didn't bark or bite things and was great with people. I did that. At this point, the house is empty and I can not imagine going through what I've went through again. Id have loved to have kept Weasely and used him as my help when training other foster puppies and to have him in my home when they leave. I did not get into social work for selfish reasons and I did not get into fostering puppies for selfish reasons. I accidentally fell in love, isn't that how it often happens. In my opinio I do not want this organization to lose money from donors, they help a lot of dog and have many quality volunteers whom I worked with. I want is for this organization to adopt policies that meet people where they are. In respective to finding adoptive homes, working with clients in the community who need to find a place for animals they care about and working with their volunteers whom should be treated as individuals. read more

It's like they don't want you to leave with a dog. They are extremely selective about who they allow to adopt. If you are not a wealthy married couple with children and a suburban yard, forget about it. On top of that, the volunteers were bad mouthing multiple dogs based on claims around the breed when they have no idea what breeds these dogs are. We put in multiple applications over months online and heard nothing, then we go in to adopt only to be told we are not allowed as we do not own a home. Go to many of the other shelters just around the block or across town, you will only leave this place with a broken heart. read more

They even told me I need to have "experience" for certain kinds of breeds & asked for past veterinarian reference. We came on Saturday and fell in love with a dog. We came back the next day to pick him up. He was still on the website, however we couldn't find him inside the building. No one greeted us when we first came in so we had to wait a few minutes to receive help. When we asked a staff member in the puppy room where our new baby was they stated they haven't seen Grohl all day but they're sure he hasn't been adopted. She explained that sometimes foster parents keep the dog if they're sick. She assured us she will talk to an adoption counselor to find him. She returned a few minutes later saying that he dog was adopted by their foster parent. we showed our disappointment and the staff comforted us by saying "that means it wasn't meant to be" I find it hard to believe that they didn't already know where he was. We had his photo and application filled out ready to welcome a new member to our family. One our before the place closes you realize a dog is missing is unprofessional. Pet lovers be WARNED!!!! A little background, my family is extreme pet lovers. Our 3 dogs and cat are/were our 2nd children. Our 9 year old daughter refers to them as her brothers and sisters. When our medium to large dogs were over 10 years old our vet let us know that vaccines could cause more problems and organ damage than the good they protect from. This was confirmed by a top vet who is a childhood friend's father. Both were honest old school vets from Texas A&M. This background that was related to rescue by application and in person visit to head of staff, we were treated like pet abusers and common criminals. 2 of our dogs recently passed over the age of 17 years old. We currently have a beagle that is 16 years old that was a stray and 2 years old when we acquired him. We have spent thousands of dollars keeping these dogs in good health and living. None of this was in consideration when adopting a dog. Only the fact that they had not received a vaccine which was recommended not to get by 2 vets. The same vaccines killed my sisters dog at older age. The head lady (Debbie) treated us like the worst people on earth and my wife had to walk out of building mid conversation to cry. I had to bite my tongue in the hopes of adopting our new dog. It was about the dog and not them. The building was far over what capacity should be, no occupancy was posted, the building had numerous code violations, and I would imagine they have no city license to operate since none was visible. I understand they are trying to match the best candidates but don't act holier than thou. And don't act like a Vet when you are not. Note: The puppy we went in to look at and had numerous applications is still available on their website weeks later. Doubt it was ever available and only phots used to draw people in. They tried to pawn off older dogs on us when we were there. This did not make sense considering we were treated like dog abusers. We were also told that we could go to Harris County and they would let us adopt no problem. After waiting to hear from them, we adopted from Harris County. Our new family member had to be approved by the manager due to its breed. He reviewed our application and our pet history. He responded that we were the perfect candidates and knew the dog was going to good home. Also understanding that of the vets recommendation. read more

Visited K-9 Angels this weekend. One employee was very kind and showed us the dog we were interested in adopting. We were told to fill out an application and would be notified later in the week. We were told the dog we were interested in did not have any other applications. We went back today to see the puppy and were told she was adopted. Very disappointed in the experience. Do not recommend this shelter. read more

I foster and adopted from k9. They are truly a great rescue group, they really do care about their dogs/cats. Throughout the week, the animals don't stay in a small kennel all day long till they get adopted, instead they go to foster families to get the socialization and house training that they might need. K9 is very selective with the adoption process, that's part of the reason why they are great, choosing to do the responsible thing is hard. it's not first come first serve (as it should never be), and they only give their dogs to families that are actually a good fit for the dog's personality not based on "how badly you want a cute dog". K-9 Angels is a wonderful organization to work with. I recently adopted a 4 month old puppy & was very pleased with the process and the volunteers who worked with me. They gave me advice and even scheduled a vet visit for rabies and micro-chipping. I recommend K-9 Angels to people every chance I get. They are a loving and dedicated group of people. read more

Go somewhere else. The people at this place were awful to me, and disrespectful, and some made racist comments. There are many other good rescue organizations who will treat you right -- try Camo Rescue for one. Trying to rescue and adopt a dog should not be a long, difficult, painful, abusive process. We all deserve to be treated with kindness. I was not treated with kindness nor respect at this organization. read more
