I had adopted a young black lab puppy at Sugar Land Tx animal shelter who was barely weaned but mean as a little rattle snake when I got him home and introduced him to my other dog who is as docile. The little fart was even mean to me and wouldn't even let my other dog move in the house or in back porch. I returned the mean little rascal to shelter and they noted should not be adopted with other dogs. I checked back and found out Scout's Honor had rescued the ornery cuss and he became one of their pups who represented them at events in full regalia of a beautiful vest of his own. He was some sort of a little mascot and lived being the center of the universe at events. So glad they lovingly found a great role and obvious personalized care for that little stinker. If they can find the right training and life for that little demon, they can be trusted with any breed to try to save him. I now greatly admire this organization!!! read more

Scouts Honor is one of the most amazing organizations with which I've ever worked. These people put the animals above all else. Those of us who foster would rather keep the animals for months and months before just sending them home with someone for the sake of having them placed. They are VERY picky and allow their fosters the right to be picky as well. The bad reviewers here were obviously not good fits for the SHR animals they were interested in. I understand how that may seem to them. But in the end, everything this group does is in the best interest of the animal. I've fostered both dog and cats. I currently have two foster kittens. read more

Let me preface this by saying I think they do great work saving dogs from kill shelters. With that said, we did a meet and greet back in March and met a dog for which we put in an application. We were told we would have a sleepover as a trial and even if it didn't work out, they had many dogs they could match us with. After not hearing back I followed up 3 times to which I got varied replies, then no replies at all. I have no idea why we were "rejected" because there was no communication from Scouts Honor. Yes, we live in a town home with no yard but just because we wanted an active breed doesn't mean we were destined to be horrible pet parents (we are both active runners and cyclists). We ended up going to the source at Harris County and adopting a Catahoula (an active, working breed) which from my research we probably would have been rejected from SH due to inexperience with the breed. Happy to report that he's passed his Star Puppy exam and has been dog of the month at daycare, which the trainer said is due to our care. We take him everywhere with us because he's our kid and love him to pieces. I have noticed a lot of the dogs we saw up for adoption 5+ months ago are still up for adoption. Maybe have a little wiggle room in stringent requirements (I.e., living in a town home and spending more than 10 minutes with potential adopters) and truly do a case by case application and more pups would find forever homes so you can save some more. Overall, we felt like we weren't good enough, but lucky for our Mylo that this was the case. read more

While I was in Corpus Christi on business, I kept running into emaciated animals, dogs chained up with no access to food or water, and dogs running into traffic. It was needless to say, a very depressing and eye-opening experience. My friend and I attempted to place these animals in local shelters or to find them homes. We came across 2 thin dogs that were running loose with a flea infestations and ticks. The smaller of the pups was pregnant and in bad shape. We had to leave for Houston and didn't want these two animals to be left on the streets or be euthanized at an already crowded animal control office so we contacted Scout's Honor. They returned our call immediately and said that they would help us even though they were low on resources. We were able to transport the dogs to an emergency vet where they received medical treatment. Scout's Honor then found foster homes for the dogs until they could find them permanent homes. I kept in contact with Scout's Honor throughout the process and ended up adopting the pregnant pooch. She had her puppies in Houston and after several weeks, I made the voyage to come pick her up. The puppies are being placed in homes in Houston as we speak. Scout's Honor Rescue is an INCREDIBLE non-profit animal rescue organization that focuses on rescuing and placing dogs and cats in Houston, Texas and surrounding areas. Scout's Honor is often the last resort for animals who are left abandoned to die in pounds or on the streets. They rescue animals from city pounds, animal shelters, also takes in animals living on the streets. They are a foster based program so the animals are not kept in cages or neglected. I got my girl from Scout's Honor in April of 2013. I had every intention of adopting another dog that I had found on their website, but they voiced apprehensions that they had since I was a first-time owner. I ended up going to their adoption event and described the type of dog I was looking for. They brought out Samantha (now Mochi) and I fell in love. Her foster dad was obviously enamoured with her and had nothing but wonderful things to say about her. Everything he said was true and she was better than I could have imagined. She was heartworm positive when I got her and had a umbilical hernia. When I told Scout's Honor about the weird lump, they made an appointment with a vet for me no questions asked. They paid for the surgery and her first six months of heartworm medication. Every person there cares deeply for the dogs and tries to make sure that the dogs are good fits for the people. It's important for them to find the dogs homes that they will be happy in forever. They also have a policy that if for any reason you want to give up the dog, they will take the dog back from you at any age. Don't be discouraged if they don't get back to you right away on an adoption application. The people who work on the adoption committee all have full-time jobs other than the rescue, so it could take a couple of weeks, but it's worth the wait. If you're looking for a dog, especially an older one, Scout's Honor Rescue is a fantastic place to adopt. They know the personalities of their dogs and can tell you loads about them before they set paw into your home. read more

I waited two weeks to write this review as I was initially very angry with this organization. Although I generally feel that they have the interests of their animals at heart (hence 2 stars instead of 1), our recent experience was extremely negative. We were interested in one animal in particular. When they told us they weren't available, they offered to introduce us to several animals that seemed like a match for our family. We met a few and decided to do a trial with one that my 2 sons clicked with. They brought the dog and did a home visit. Left her in our care (despite I could tell some reservations) but left her completely sick (had diarrhea all over the house for days). Having had animals our entire lives, my husband and I just hung with it and took her out every couple of hours throughout the night and as often as possible during the day. They also left her unmicrochipped for which we made a vet appointment (also for the diarrhea). She was also unregistered at the vet they had provided info for and never followed up regarding whether they updated the info. (also claimed to have her heartworm treated) We have a fenced yard but were having housework done when she chewed through her leash during an outdoor break to try to get some diarrhea out (which was 10 minutes) and crawled under the house to escape. She was found since we had updated her new collar with nametag and shelter name. Shelter basically told us after over a week of diarrhea up all night potty training that we were not suitable or safe dog owners. Our last dog was adopted from spca and was our fur baby until he died of ripe old age. Our home could not be a better more loving space for an animal (we also have a special needs cat). But the really unprofessional part is that after I asked for an update after the weekend (that they took her back), I never heard from them again. If they can't recognize a decent home for their animals they're going to end up saving a lot fewer. In addition, my 6 year old was devastated. So now we're considering not even dealing with shelters that seem to be completely unreasonable. My husband doesn't want our kids (or me, I got pretty attached in a short time to the dog) to go through this sort of thing again. read more

An angel network made up of ordinary volunteers! I found an abandoned dog in the middle of my street with its collar and leash still attached, but in pretty bad shape. It was obvious that the dog has been mistreated and neglected. We housed her for a night and took her to Sunset Animal Clinic the next day to get checked out...$500 later we were told that the dog was suffering from a severe case of UTI and needed to be on medication. We didn't want to take her to BARC or the SPCA because we knew that they would only hold the dog for 3 days before they would euthanize her, and we knew that this dog would need some TLC and time to be out going. I contacted EVERY no kill shelter and agency from Houston to Austin asking for help, and all of them said that they were in full capacity because of the recent floods. Scout's Honor contacted me within an hour of my email to them, and they were the only ones that said that they would do everything they could to help the dog. They contacted their network in DIFFERENT STATES to help this poor dog find a place to stay. Jennifer with Scout's Honor kept me in the loop with what was going on, and they think that they found a foster for the dog in Wisconsin. She also said that Scout's Honor would take care of the transportation - WOW, talk about people going the extra mile for a scruffy abandoned dog! Even though nothing has been finalized yet, I'm just blown away at their level of commitment and ability to reach out and help. I will definitely be supporting this organization from here on out, and you should definitely too! I am updating my review as I have seen that Scout's Honor has updated the dog's story. I feel it is a little skewed in that it says great with other dogs with proper introduction. It's really hard to do a 'proper introduction' when the dog in question busts thru a gate and comes charging. BUT they also do say 'almost any home' so I am sure they will make sure the things that are needed to keep all safe are met. I really do believe they want the best for these animals and try very hard to match them with the perfect family. I just think in our case no one could foresee what would happen once the dog I adopted got truly healthy and accepted our home as her own. I am happy to see they have updated her story and feel that they are not setting her up to fail. read more

I had trouble getting a response from the staff, THEN was given conflicting information from different representatives. When a volunteer brought the dog that I was interested in to my house, she was condescending but at least told me they would bring the dog back for a second visit. Once again, I heard from a different representative who, in so many words, proclaimed that my current dog was not suitable to be with their "rescued" dog. So, needless to say, I will be looking elsewhere, also. I am extremely disappointed in the way I was treated by Scout's Honor. read more

I adopted my Charlie dog from Scout's Honor in the winter of 2012. My pup specifically needed surgery to treat several bite wounds (believed to have been sustained as a bait dog) as well as treatment for mange. Not only did Scout's Honor cover these expenses but they also included preventative care for my other dog. Since adopting Charlie, I have regularly followed their newsletter and have found that Charlie was not a special exception. All animals that come into their hands and hearts are given the very best treatment they can provide. Scout's Honor goes above and beyond to ensure that each animal is matched with a suitable home. They aren't looked to just place a dog for a few years; they are looking for find Forever Homes. They deeply care about the animals in their program and often will keep in contact with the adopters to see how the Scout's Honor Alum are doing. Scout's Honor is a wonderful organization with great volunteers and fantastic animals in need of a second chance. I can't recommend them higher. read more

I visited all the local city shelters and did a ton of research before coming across Scout's Honor, and from the moment I filled out their adopt/foster questionnaire, it was immediately clear I had found what I was looking for. I am a first time dog-owner, despite wanting one for years, and the volunteers at SH continue to go above and beyond to help their critters find the right home. They called me back within an hour of filling out their form, spent an hour on the phone with me learning more about my lifestyle and what I wanted from a dog, and then made some suggestions on which dogs they had in their program that fit my lifestyle. My dear Crosby had a couple minor medical issues after I fostered him, and they held my hand (and his paw!) throughout every vet visit and new situation as they came up. He's now perfectly healthy and having a blast as my new running partner/couch companion. It didn't take long to decide he was the dog for me, and even after officially adopting him, any time I need advice on even the smallest of questions, they respond immediately and go above and beyond the call of duty to make sure their dogs (and humans!) are as happy as can be. I can't recommend them enough, and will do as much as I can to continue donating to their wonderful organization. read more
