Its a intangible talent to make beauty tangible. To create and transform a space. You walk in here, and everything is unique, and its placed in such a way that makes you see an already one-of-a-kind item, differently. Its not just a furniture store for the reclaimed and upcycled, Kirk Albert has some really almost revolutionary transformations going on, like turning a vintage bowling alley into a long, gorgeous communal table by adding enormous, industrial-type legs. Turning old reclaimed wood into a one of a kind console by by breathing new life into it with a balanced set of Frankenstein shop legs. He incorporates found items like a giant ten foot long hanging hammer (take that, boring home office!) to a humorously disturbing John Basquiat meets Frances Bacon framed 3-D tormented man, to possibly hang over your VIctorian fireplace. Renate Ruby, shop owner, is basically a curator of craft. She travels to the factories of the furniture lines she represents, for example, so she speaks from the perspective of someone who has really dug in deep to get the know her products from the inside out. Warning: only get her started on the properties of quality linen if you are prepared! That girl knows her stuff. She's scouts out things like small-batch wallpapers and dishware that are not readily available. So that's cool. The other thing I notice about the shop, well check the hours before you drop in, is that there are occasional events that bring people I have never met together, Once, there was a salon-like gathering and the presentation was on perfume. Again, small-batch, hand-crafted product. Because we live in a world that increasingly feels mass-produced (maybe it's my reaction to the myriad of cranes and skyscrapers being build in this SeaTown), it's important to find and share these gems. While looking, I noticed that no one greeted me, no one asked if I needed help with anything. Yet, several people around me were asked and they all happened to be white, or look white at least. As a person of color, I couldn't help but feel that this was done on purpose. I even stood next to the jewelry which is right next to the cashier and nothing. I still bought the item and left. Ultimately, I decide to come back a few minutes later to return it. This didn't feel right at all. I wanted to give them my feedback in the moment but decided to call after I left. As a brown male amongst all white woman, it just didn't seem like the best idea. I want to say that this wasn't on purpose but it's hard not to take it that way. I will never shop at this place again!

We'd moved into a bigger home and had been shopping for unfussy outdoor furniture. I love the aesthetic of Fermob bistro set, and when I saw this store carried more Fermob items, I decided to pay a visit. The store is filled to the brim with charming items you'd want to take home, including some apparel, jewelry and bags. I went back the next day with my partner, and we bought some outdoor rocking chairs, a loveseat and some side tables, as well as a cozy alpaca blanket to use in our yard. They were having their 20% off anniversary sale June 8-, so I feel very happy about the shopping on Saturday. The reason I say "maybe" to the "would you recommend?" question has to do with my personal experience on Friday, when there were fewer (2?) employees and also fewer (2) customers in the store. Make of it what you will. As a POC and someone who walked in there in some athleisure getup with no purse (just the phone), I felt like some of the staff may judge a book by its cover. I obviously seemed interested in the furniture, tried sitting on them, curiously took photos of them to show my husband, but until I took the initiative to say hi, the employees acted like they wouldn't have any time to spare for me (2 employees talking to a white lady, 2 customers). I purchased 2 sets of Graf Lantz coasters and a bag that day. I was asked if I was in their system/reward program, but at no time was I asked to be added to the system. Also: I only found out about the anniversary sale starting the next day, because I overheard them telling the other customer and asked about it. (If I hadn't overheard, they might have lost a $3K sale.) Only after I went back with my (white) husband in a better outfit, I feel like I got more eager help. Again this was just my personal experience on a particular day, so your experience would of course vary depending on your/store's circumstances. It wasn't an overt profiling, but more like a series of small subconscious (or conscious) choices out of habit. To a person who's experienced this kind of dismissive behaviors from many a storekeeper, it may seem more like micro aggression. On the positive note, after my bigger purchase, I earned enough points to get a $100 discount! I feel like this is a pretty good reward program. I wish I could figure out a way to use this discount online/have things delivered, since I don't live close to the store.
