I've been to Houndstooth several times now and have tried different lattes each time. Each has been okay but just not great. Their coffee and espresso is bitter, lacking a nice, smooth sip. As others have noted, their prices are not budget friendly. For a 12 oz latte with alternative milk, you're paying about $7. I'd be fine with the cost if I felt the quality and service were worth it--but I just don't think either are. There are lots of coffee spots in the Lower Greenville area, so it doesn't help that this spot has healthy competition. For a similar, quick pick up coffee location minus crazy parking, LDU is a much more reliable bet. Similar in price, but you're also getting a quality cup and excellent service. Every time I visit Houndstooth, there's always folks camped out on laptops like Starbucks. They're generous with free Wi-Fi and seem to welcome the work-and-sip atmosphere. As an alternative to Starbucks, Houndstooth will suffice for a working environment. However for a coffee or caffeine hit, there are better options. read more

Okay, maybe it's partly because I don't live in Texas anymore, but I LOVE visiting Houndstooth Coffee. First, and most importantly, their coffee is great. But second, it's just so cute with the little Texas shapes on the mugs. And they always have such beautiful interiors. My family and I visited this Houndstooth location around the Christmas holiday this year and were excited to see that they had a Christmas special (who doesn't want some extra special, holiday-themed latte art). We really enjoyed taking a break from our holiday errands to enjoy a cup of coffee each at this great coffeeshop. (My little sister is 11 and doesn't think their hot chocolate is sweet enough. I disagree, but in case anyone has a kid with a sweet tooth, I thought I'd post this here.) read more

To be fair, in order to write a better review, I'd have to go back. But I don't want to. The interior is nice and everything screams that it wants to be a great coffee shop. But I'm not convinced. The one chance I gave this place, I got the Japanese iced coffee. With tax and tip, the total came to $6. For coffee that's brewed with hot water and poured over ice, that just felt way too overpriced. (And this is coming from someone who's lived in LA. Am I not allowed to expect better prices from Dallas?) Sometimes I don't mind paying more for a good study spot. Unfortunately in this aspect, too, it fell short. The space is very small and not the quietest. It's great for conversation, but I think next time I'll find a place that doesn't terrorize my wallet for those good long conversations. read more

The coffee was very good, and the staff was friendly and helpful. They have a lot of interesting beans for purchase as well. They also have a wide variety of delicious breakfast tacos available, including traditional, vegetarian, and vegan options, which I appreciated. It is a large airy space with a nice patio area. I love that they have a bag recycling program! We are not local so sadly cannot take advantage, but I love to see it. read more

I went in on a Friday morning and although it was pretty busy, parking was not hard to find. They have plenty of seating inside, complimentary wifi, but not a ton of outlets. As an avid tea drinker I did not have high expectations for the tea selection coming into a shop that specializes in coffee, however this place surprised me. The tea I will say is a bit pricier than most, but they brew it in a tea pot so you get more than just a standard 8 oz cup. The earl grey was very good, and they had no problem serving with my little bit of almond milk on the side. They also sell Taco Deli tacos which is a huge plus in my book! I had an almond latte and I would definitely get it again. We tried a chocolate croissant which would have been better warmed up. The tacos here though...were not good. They didn't have any meat options and they were completely mushy. They also have potatoes as an option but they were mashed potatoes...very weird. As a latte lover, this has become my gold standard for coffee. Have yet to taste a latte as smooth as the one here. It hits the spot everytime. Parking is great, service is great - the baristas always make an effort to get to know you. I wish the location had more space or seating with backs on the chairs so its not a great study spot but amazing to chill and people watch if you're into that. Houndstooth has made its way to Dallas! It occupies the place where Pearl Cup used to be, and I honestly think it's an upgrade. I've been to the Austin location, and this place captures the vibes perfectly. I see people studying, chatting, and just hanging out. It's so beautiful and spacious here. They have local pastries and roasts. I got the timepiece cappuccino (you can choose from different espressos, and they were serving the timepiece when I came), and it was smooth and strong. I also had an almond croissant. It was a bit hard to tear apart... Not the best - I'll probably choose another pastry next time. But Houndstooth was everything I expected and more. The baristas are so friendly! I hope it's not their "grand opening" personalities because it's really refreshing to see such nice and happy baristas in Dallas. Love this place!! read more

I was so ready to love Houndstooth. The reviews were fantastic and the cafe was clean and super trendy with a strong hipster vibe, the kind of place this coffee snob would love to frequent. They didn't seem to have prices listed anywhere, and I was shocked that just a cup of coffee came out to $4.40. The coffee was nothing special, bordering on bad; it was simultaneously too weak and too acidic. But I really wanted to believe, so I followed the cup of coffee up with a double macchiato. It was less disagreeable than the coffee, but still a little weak and a little too acidic. I don't know much about coffee but I'm all about finding new coffee shops to do work and this place is just great. Plenty of seating inside and out. They even have a patio area where you can people watch which I love! I rarely come in this area and I need to change that. I told the barista I needed something strong and he suggest a pour over. This is some good coffee. I asked for soy milk but I don't need any milk at all! This coffee is delicious black and that's when you know you are having some good coffee. I was majorly lack of sleep but this coffee has woken me up and I feel so productive! The price isn't too bad either especially asking for soy milk. I normally pay about $5-$6 and this ended up being less than $4! read more

Really cool vibes here at Houndstooth. Great iced coffee--Japanese Style apparently. My friend really enjoyed her latte as well. They don't have a ton of flavor variety; their menu is limited to the classics, but they have some specialty drinks that look interesting! The shop is spacious with plenty of seating, but barely any outlets, which is sad if you need a quick charge. This location has a parking lot that it shares with a few other businesses and very limited street parking. It's right on the corner which makes the outdoor seating feel fast paced. Houndstooth is a comfortable place to study or drink coffee with a friend. The inside is kept clean and looks modern. Unlike some coffee places the atmosphere is very casual and the music isn't cranked up so loud that you can't even hear yourself think. There aren't many outlets though. I more so appreciate the space that's great for studying and just chatting. There are tables for one and big tables for groups. Unfortunately, though, the high prices, uncomfortable seating, lack of house brew after 2pm, gendered bathrooms, and cold brew being served in plastic cups by default make the overall experienced mixed. You know those busy days where you get in the zone, keep working, and then realize you've missed lunch? It was one of those days. So I decided to take a mental vacation- get out of the office for one of my favorite pastimes, sitting on a patio with a cold coffee beverage. It's what I do. This is the space that we all know as the former Pearl Cup. But man has it changed! The only remnant I found of the Pearl Cup was an engraving on the floor right at the door. Otherwise this is a new space! I love the wood accents that they did, creating a rich textural pattern. The bar is laid out so that you order at one end and pay at the other. When ordering my iced latte, I was intrigued to see that you get to pick which espresso roast you want. I had no idea what to get, so asked the barista for guidance.She picked one and told me why (it had a classic taste, whereas the other option has a more floral/fruit taste). I went down to the other end to pay. I was looking for food- and only saw a small cake stand with a few leftover muffins. I would have loved a basic shortbread cookie, but no such luck. I'm not sure if it was just the time of day (3pm's a little late in their day) or if they just don't put much emphasis on food options. I was a little disappointed, but opted for a blueberry muffin. It was good! Just not what I really wanted at that time. Plenty of seating inside- a lot of larger community tables. There are two patio options- off to the side and in front of the entrance. Some shade, some sun. I have a favorable impression of Houndstooth, but feel like I need to make a couple more visits to feel it out. I'm not quite sure the crowd. Finally made it over here after driving by every day. I figured I would support a locally-owned business. Ordered a large latte with almond milk. It was $6.50. I basically got a steamed almond milk. After taking a sip, there was zero coffee taste in this thing. I went to the counter to ask if they could fix it somehow and the guy told me I could pay more for an espresso shot and I'd need to get back in line to do that. No thanks. I dropped $6.50 on the weakest coffee I have ever tasted. The last thing I want to do is pay even more to get my drink up to snuff, not to mention hop back in line to do so. What ever happened to customer service? "Oh your drink isn't right? What can we do to fix it?" Should be so easy. I ended up leaving and went right to Starbucks like I do every other morning. Stronger coffee without the hipster pretentiousness. Sure the place is cute inside, but I'm not paying $6.50 for a sub-par coffee just to experience nice decor. read more

The star of Houndstooth is the coffee, truly. The espresso is superb.. Their cortados and cappuccinos are so smooth- not only the texture but also the flavor. They also offer 2 different espressos at all times and I'm pretty sure they have a rotational thing going there. Not only am I impressed with their perfect barista skills, but also their efficiency. These hipsters really know what they're doing behind the bar, and do it in a timely manner. By the time I order to the left of the espresso machine, I get my drink by the time I get to the right of the espresso machine where I pay. I've never seen such an efficiently run coffee shop ever :D Houndstooth's cortados, cappuccinos, cold brew, and hibiscus teas are all my favorites. Some down sides of this place is that it's not comfortable. Certainly not much of a industrial homey feel like Pearl Cup (RIP) used to be. All the plaid shirts and crisp decor makes this place unattractive when I'm looking for something more laid back. They also do not have a lot of outlets and their actual seating is uncomfortable. But the big tables are nice because it allows for big groups to come in. Another huge con are their prices. Method and Houndstooth seems to be the only two that think it's okay to charge over $4 for their cappuccinos and cortados... It's like almost $4.50 for a cortado and an extra 50 cents if I want their "special" espresso bean. OMG that's like $5. My wallet is glad I don't come in everyday. Upon entering, you can see the Houndstooth pattern engraved over the old Pearl Cup engraving on the ground. I'm a huge fan of tweed and I've worked with it myself so I was excited to have a local tweed spot next to my house. First, I've never ever been here and not gotten a seat. The seating is very ample and the ambience and lighting are perfectly balanced for that nice, read a book coffee shop environment. Also the baristas are all very nice. Every time I'm in they ask how my day is going and it's a nice little touch i appreciate. The coffee is perfect each time. I had a perfectly decent time at Houndstooth. The decor caught my eye first--the interesting wooden facade and ample patio seating (both covered and uncovered) would make this a cool outdoor hangout on a less blisteringly warm day. Inside, the concrete floors, funky modern-art light fixtures and teal-and-wooden color scheme are quite pleasing to the eye, while at the same time coming off a bit cold, sterile. There are five large communal tables that each seat six on tall stools and a bar with the same tall stools that extends along the outer walls; no cozy chairs to curl up in here, most patrons were working on laptops. The baristas were quite friendly and helpful, making nice conversation about the weather and offering me 1% milk in my Iced Americano when I asked for a low-calorie alternative to the available cream. The Americano was good, if slightly pricey, and served in a pint glass with the Houndstooth logo on it (very suave). Houndstooth Coffee is a shop with a great vibe and average coffee. It seems like a fun place to relax with friends. The baristas are great and eager to help you. I thought the coffee was average. I had a triple shot latte and found it tasting like a normal latte rather than an extra boost of espresso. I also had the Papas, Egg and Cheese Taco with spicy salsa. I LOVE this houndstooth. I cannot emphasis that enough. When I moved to Dallas 2 years ago, I stopped here for coffee before I made it to my new home, and fell in love. Houndstooth is bred in Austin, but a newcomer to Dallas. I remember when they were just a random pop-up shop at Transit bicycle company. I think they're on the right track because this location is awesome. The baristas are really personable and make an effort to get to know you. It doesn't hurt that they also brew a wickedly good Cortado, even if it is $4.30. While the price is a bit high, I'm really glad they're in the neighborhood to take up the mantle from the Pearl Cup. 4 stars for now until I am sure it's love at first site. read more
