Great box with very friendly staff and members. I was in Birmingham for business and wanted to get…read moresome good workouts while I was there. Went Monday-Wednesday for the 6:30a classes. The most that was there at one time was on Wednesday, about 12 or so people. Not sure if that is indicative of usual Wednesdays, but I thought I would mention it. I would say that the most members that should be in there is about 12 due to the space, especially if the workout involves barbell work. Drop in rates for multiple days seemed pretty reasonable - $45 for 3 days. I expected that it would be $20/day. Also they are pretty active on Facebook which is always a plus for me. When I was researching crossfit gyms in the area I sent them a message on Facebook and they responded. Even while I was already in Birmingham they responded to messages. Just to give you an idea of the WODs I did while was there: Heavy Diane - deadlift 275# and headstand push-ups (of course I did scaled version) EMOM 9 burpees for 20min - if you do less than 10 rounds = 50 penalty burpees; 11-14 rounds = 30 penalty burpees; 15+ rounds = no penalty Overall great place to workout, the only concern would be space if there was a lot of people coming in. And maybe I did not see it on their site, but some kind of online sign in would be even better so you could see how many people would be at the class.

This gym's primary focus is strength training vs. HIIT or cardio (as you could probably infer from the gym name). As someone who has struggled with body image, disorder eating, and gym intimidation, a gym being able to make me feel included and comfortable really is a BIG thing. The trainers (& other members) know you by name and are real life normal people! The location has moved to awesome/beautiful space near Pepper Place as well. A few friends had tried Steel Strength Training and only had great things to say. I knew I needed a program that I could actually maintain rather than try for a few months and fall off, and they seemed like the perfect fit. After speaking with Nate, the owner, I came in early one morning for an initial consultation. He showed me around the gym and explained the program to me. We even tried a few workouts to gauge where I was and talked over my goals and what I needed to get out of the program. The rest, as they say, is history. I've been with Steel for over six months now and show now signs of stopping. They give you the tools you need to succeed inside and outside of the gym. I'm stronger than I've ever been and have a level of flexibility and movement that I never thought I could have. I still don't like the gym but there's a huge difference between not liking something and dreading it. I don't dread going to the gym anymore. I can see results both physically and mentally and that's the best part. I have so far to go but I know I'll reach my goals with Steel Strength Training. But there comes a time when you just need to mix it up and try something different. And when it was Luan heading it up, you know when it comes to the cutting edge of fitness in Bham, he is the man and so follow him I did and I am so glad I did!!! There is a "cross-fit" aspect to the conditioning workouts, although with a definite twist. Everyday is not a 1,2,3 go and hit your redline. You actually spend time during the week working on positioning and form. There is one day focusing on active recovery. Some days they will throw in steel maces which are so much fun and beyond challenging. It's all about the whole body, including what you put in your body as well. To top things off, during every class time, there is a simultaneous class running in strength training and Olympic weightlifting. Because its not all about conditioning, but all recent studies in fitness and keeping your body in top condition is including strength training. And with Luan at the helm who has devoted his career in the fitness world to the study of Olympic weight training, this is the real deal. And don't be afraid if you have never done it. The trainers are there to work your through and make sure your form and movement is where it should be. WH has even formed an Olympic weightlifting team that has been competing around the southeast and doing really well. But not only do you get top equipment and instruction, the community is one of the best I have ever been associated with. Encouraging, open, caring and just people you want to hang with. You really do end of feeling it is your home away from home. The people of WH are here to help you succeed, reach for your best self, and make sure you do it safely. WH is always running deals where you can try it for a week for free or pay for only a month so you can try it before you jump on in and commit. I promise if you try it...you will find your home. Thank you for the training WH!

No other gym I know of has the same level of professional and intentional coaches and staff. They have gone to great lengths to make the gym both as useful and accessible to as many people as possible. For example, there are regular class options for those who want to be apart of a class, there are drop-in options, and they now have open gym option for people who just want to use the facility to train on their own. Not to mention if you pay for regular classes, you also have open gym access whenever the doors are open. Suffice it to say that if you're looking for an awesome gym in Birmingham, chances are high WHA will meet your needs. Lastly but also importantly, the facility and equipment are top of the line and competition-ready. The strength class uses the Rogue Olympic Weightlifting barbells and plates, and the conditioning side has Concept2 rowers, SkiErg, and Assault AirBikes in addition to also having more Rogue barbells, plates, and dumbbells as well. So much more to say, but Wheelhouse is an easy 5 stars!

They have a big parking lot, but there were just so many people! I would guesstimate there are about 200 spaces and about that many people working out when I came. They were lots of weights too. After that I tried some of the weight machines. They also had an E-gym I'm pretty curious about. I will say the gym is kind of a maze the way it's built so I did get lost a few times. But it also just added more to being separated/sectioned off.
