I like that even for a small studio they still have a variety of classes as well as available times throughout the day. All the ladies that work at this studio are super nice and helpful! They are on the second floor of The Battery. You walk in and you can place your stuff in the cubby holes and change shoes/into sticky socks. You initial your name at the front desk, and they also have a mini-storefront with things like clothing and accessories. The studio is impeccably clean! You have weights, straps, TRX straps, balls, the coolest foldable yoga mats, and these little round foot pads that they use to work out in. I have been to a couple of classes including their Fusion and Express (shorter) classes. The first class was challenging to me, but later on I really enjoyed these classes. They usually offer several morning classes from about 5am-8am, a noon class, and the afternoon classes are usually from 3pm-6pm. I usually pick the noon or early afternoon classes cause I'm just not a morning person lol. They also provide such an uplifting environment! I always feel so great after class and look forward to it so much.

Each instructor shapes their own workout with their own play lists so it switches up everyday. It follows the same layout but different workouts. Followed by combination work with weights or straps (targeting your whole body). Followed by glute work, then abs. Once this is all complete, we end it with light yoga and stretches. Really focuses on tiny muscles, low weighs with high reps. High energy and I absolutely adore all the instructors! Pure Barre in Homewood is my go to spot and I like how it's very cutesy, very mindful, very demure :) The instructors make sure to learn your name before class and do a great job at helping you adjust your form to get the intended impact of each move. They're also good and shouting people out throughout class to help keep us motivated. I've tired both the classic class and define classes. The classics kick my butt the most but define isn't far behind. I like how each class is different and helps you get stronger in different ways. I honestly hate the idea of sweating and intentionally being in pain, so I motivate myself with cute outfits and post workout treats, like a smoothie from Farm Bowl. I feel like I get my money's worth every single workout and I can feel myself getting stronger each time. I can now hold a 30 second plank and use the weights much more easily, but it took awhile and I still have plenty of room to grow. Bonus points for the friendly, girl power environment!

The great thing about the workout though, is that the instructors do a great job of keeping you energized, pumped up and motivated! I've had different instructors every time and I have enjoyed them all! If you're new, you'll want to ask someone about the hand positions you'll need to know, because the instructors do tend to jump right in as if you're supposed to know what's next! I kind of assumed going in that the instructors might be partial to 1 of the exercises more then others but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised! When you are on the spin section of class you really will feel like you are in a spin class, same for Barre. The one part that I think could use some more improvement is weights. I feel like you never truly transition from barre type movements even though you do have the option to incorporate small hand weights. The main limiting factor of this is the small space they have to work with. I think if they one day move to a larger studio that they could incorporate a wider variety of weighted exercise that transition away from typical Barre movements. Overall I think its a great workout and competitively priced to the other studios around town. I'd recommend any woman try it just to shake up your normal routine a bit!

I originally joined to get in shape for my wedding but ended up staying for the long haul because THIS WORKS YALL. Downtown OTF is, in my opinion, the superior one in the Birmingham area. Coach Avana and Nigel have what it takes to keep me engaged in class and always pushing to be better. I go 3 times a week, sometimes more and I saw results quickly. I'm no longer embarrassed to show my arms in sleeveless dresses and tops, and my muscles are more defined. I will caution you though, you get what you put into it. If you only come once a week you probably won't see results. This is something you have to work for (as is any workout facility). Going as much as I do has yielded a long term loss in body fat, toned legs and arms, and endurance IVE NEVER HAD, even when I played college soccer. I can run 5ks without even thinking about it now AND I AM NOT SOMEONE WHO LOVES TO RUN. Favorite things about OTF DOWNTOWN- there are so many classes to choose from that you don't get at other OTF or any other studio of any sort. The coaches and staff are top notch. It is always clean and in the showers they even provide hair dryers, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. They have complimentary hygiene products in all bathrooms for that day you forget your pony tail holder, deodorant, or tampon. First class is free so why not try it out?

I tried OT while I was traveling through Birmingham, and I've been wanting to try an OT studio in my hometown of Miami. I signed up for a class and was told to come in 45 minute prior to class, which going to other studios I knew that was way too much time. When I questioned it, they said 30 minutes prior was ok. I showed up before class and they completed paperwork, got me setup for a heart rate monitor, did a studio tour, and then introduced me to the coach (Avana) who showed me how the equipment worked and gave a brief overview of today's workout. Avana was an amazing coach, checked on you throughout the workout and kept you motivated along the way. So why not a complete 5 star experience? The heart rate system didn't work throughout the entire workout. The coach and the front desk team checked their system to see why it wasn't working and they couldn't remedy the problem. It really defeated the purpose of the OT system and workout because of the technical problem. It's hard to figure out how you need to modify how you are performing in your workout if their systems aren't working as they should be. Would I come back to OT? Probably, but it is for the staff alone. I don't fault them for faulty equipment.. but I do fault management for not keeping their systems up to date and maintained.

The Shades Valley location, right on HWY 31 is awesome. I'm normally here for classes, but also really love how the treadmills here are set up in front of the windows! Most locations do not have windows in the cardio area. I was prompted to write a review because I'd never been out to the outdoor pool here... SINCE WHEN DO I HAVE A POOL MEMBERSHIP?? This had slipped my mind as an amenity to the Y. I accompanied my mother to the 9am 'AquaFit' class [see also: my running commentary on appreciating things for an 'older' crowd]. AquaFit was so fun, and a great way to get out and enjoy some sunshine! After the class, I hung out by the pool for a little bit. They have some nice lounge chairs, two slides, a beach entry spot for the pool, and lots of fun nooks for kids to play. I'm certainly going to enjoy this for the rest of the summer. The YMCA offers so many great classes and programs with your membership. I really love the Barre and Pilates classes, and I haven't been, but the Greystone location has actual Pilates reformer machines. I think my membership is something like $12/month. How can you beat that??? You get full access to every location in the Greater Birmingham YMCA system!
