We're from Dallas and were traveling to El Paso 2 days ago and decided to get off I-10 and find lunch not wrapped in paper like fast food on the highway. As we drove through town I saw a tall building and recognized it to be a hotel (The Settles) that I had read about maybe a year ago in The Dallas Morning News that was being restored to it's 1930's splendor by a locally born native son named Ryan. As we drove by the Hotel was saw "Grill" sign in the window and circled back, parked and walked in the lobby. We LOVE old hotels like the Warwick in Houston, Brown Palace in Denver, St. Frances in San Francisco and our own Adolphus and Melrose Hotels in Dallas. The lobby at the Settles is stunning with twin ascending stairways to the Mezzanine with magnificent Grand Ballroom, in a class with these other places. But, back to the Settles Grill. What a fabulous experience - hostess, waitresses, restaurant/bar manager (Kelley Salay) and food/beverage. We told our waitress and we were driving through and happened upon the grill. She was very helpful and as I was in the mood for a burger at mid day she agreed that the Settles Burger was a good choice with some interesting condiments - I do not recall the exact descriptions but there were horseradish pickles and an onion "relish" that was perfect and tomatoes sliced very thin the way I liked them. Burger was as good as I've ever had. My wife had the Black Bean burger that she also found to be excellent with the "coated" French Fries. Lunch was topped of with Cappuccino Creme Broule, with whipped cream on top. As we were finishing our meal the general contractor (John Deere - can't make this up) stopped by the table and told us a little about the hotel renovation - nice guy who told us to make sure and see the Grand Ballroom before we left. As we were leaving the hotel I noticed a large portrait on the landing of the grand stairway and asked a person at the front desk and was told the beautiful woman was the mother of the hotel owner - likely from a picture taken when hotel was in it's heyday. If you are in west Texas about 40 miles east of Midland treat yourself to a stop at the Settles Hotel and dine at the Grill, you will not regret it. read more

I had to take an impromptu business trip to West Texas recently, and I really didn't want to spend $280+ for one night in Midland/Odessa (even with my company picking up the tab), so I decided to spend the night in Big Spring. I usually stay at Marriott- and Hilton-brand hotels when I travel, but after reading the reviews of some of these more well-known places in Big Spring, I decided to take a chance and stay at the historic downtown Hotel Settles. I am SO glad that I did! It is a very nice place, which becomes obvious when you walk into the lobby area from outside. The front desk staff is exceedingly courteous and friendly, and The Pharmacy Bar has very good prices on drinks (compared to most other older historic hotels), and a billiards table in an adjoining parlor room with some very comfy chairs. I didn't get a chance to eat anything at the Settles Grill...maybe next time. My room on the 9th floor was clean and quiet. The bathroom and closet were spacious, and the mini-refrigerator was big enough to keep several waters and beers cold. Also, the fitness center (in the basement) had free weights, lifting machines, and several treadmills & ellipticals. This hotel is within walking distance of a wonderful cigar bar, and several restaurants. My only critique of the hotel is that there is only one ice machine, and it's in the basement. Other than that, I had no complaints (and I typically look for reasons to do so when I travel). If you ever have to travel to Big Spring or Midland, but don't want to pay Permian Basin prices for lodging, take a look at the Hotel Settles, especially if you're by yourself or on a couples weekend...you'll save quite a bit of cash! read more

My family and I love this hotel. Spend a night or two a few times a year when we drive from Austin to New Mexico. Great history and the hotel is a real surprise. Rooms are large and very nice. Restaurant and bar are top notch. All extremely clean. Service is personable and friendly. Looking forward to seeing more businesses start near the hotel over the next few years. Noticed that a new bar, The Legacy, has recently opened. Didn't go there, but heard live music coming out of the bar and noticed lots of people there. Love The Settles. read more

My husband and I stayed there for our anniversary. What a great experience it was. So much history in this hotel. The restoration that has been done is amazing. The Settles experience starts as you walk in the door and never stops. Restaurant is great, the bar is the old pharmacy, so nice. The rooms are vintage and gorgeous. We will be spending many more anniversaries there. read more

My husband went to Big Spring on business, and I managed his travel reservations.... the ladies I spoke with at this hotel were top notch. At the front desk and the restaurant... They went out of their way to accommodate my every request. I hear the food was absolutely delicious... and the chef was extremely accommodating to my vegetarian husband on a night when the menu was prix fix. (Thank you to the restaurant manager Cynthia who was kind enough to ask the chef in advance, as well as secure a last minute reservation on a very busy night.) I got a FaceTime of the queen parlor room and it was super spacious, well decorated, and clean. We really appreciate the service received here, you don't see that kind of hospitality just anywhere. I recently bought some furniture in Big Spring so I thought I would treat myself to lunch at the Settles Hotel on the way home. The Dr. Pepper was very good. For my appetizer I got chicken tortilla soup and I really enjoyed it, it tasted homemade. For my main dish I got the Settles Burger and it was nice that you could have a salad as your side dish choice. The onion relish on the burger had a good flavor and the patty was juicy and not overdone. There were some pickles which had an uncommon but good flavor. I liked the homemade salad dressing for the salad too. The Settles has always been a treat for me, food and service have been very good every time I have been. read more

Beautiful place. I didnt realize there was such a place in big spring, TX. A room like this would be 300 plus a night in Austin, DFW, or San Antonio. Large spacious 2 bed room with a separated dressing room and bathroom. Marble floors, huge shower, comfortable beds. They supply robes as well. There is a decent restaurant in the lobby and a great little bar. The pool looked nice and was lit up at night, we just got in too late to enjoy it. The only complaints I could give is that there is never anyone at the desk when we went and no bell so we stood around a bit, and the water is super soft. To the point it felt like I still had soap on. But for West Texas it's surprising to have such an elegant place and I would stay again in a heartbeat. I almost cancelled our second reservation in midland to stay another night. Especially for the fact a room at the la Quinta in Odessa cost nearly as much as this grand place! read more

Bartender was rude and argumentative!!! I met my brother at the bar and he said he was asked to have a seat and a waitress would come. After waiting a few minutes, I asked the bartender if I could order a drink. She was visibly bothered and said she didn't even have to serve me! So I sat at the bar and my brother sat at the table. The staff went out of their way to avoid serving us!! Two waitresses walked around aimlessly and the bartender blew me off. Then the blue eyed blonde hair couple that came in 5 minutes later were immediately taken menus. I will never set foot in the Settles again. They certainly don't care to serve ALL guests. I've been looking for a place that offers a bit of fine dining here in Big Spring. I finally found one and it is called the Settles Grill. it is very impressive. Once you walk in and settle in, you forget where you are. The hospitality is great and the food is even better. There aren't many places to dine at while in Big Spring, but this place makes up for that if you are visiting for a day or two or even driving thru town. Enjoy!! read more

Woke up on the 7th floor, ready for breakfast. Looked at their menu on their website and immediately gravitated to their Big Spring Eggs Benedict. Made it downstairs only to be disappointed. They've changed their menu and haven't updated the online version. Wait staff was very attentive and gracious. Ordered the omelet and was blown away by the taste. All right, so, here it is. I recently moved back to my hometown of Abilene from Phoenix. Needless to say, the quality and abundance of fine dining is below par (don't get me wrong I love me some Popeyes on my drunken nights, but sometimes I want, need, something more impressive). My boyfriend took a job in Big Springs recently, and the first thing I thought was, damn... It's going to be Chinese buffets and over-cooked chicken fried steak in my immediate future. Surprise surprise. Tonight was my first time "dining" in Big Springs. I was so, incredibly satisfied. We started with the bleu crab cakes and avocado dip. The crab cakes were actually mostly crab, which is rare in this part of the state and the jalapeño sauce was spicy, but gorgeous. Reminded my senses that food is an adventure. ;-) The avocado dip... Oh my gatos, great combination of avocado, cheese, and...wait for it, chorizo! I love properly cooked chorizo. Gave a perfect kick, and I'm not even a huge avocado fan. Our entrees were the chicken fried steak (not my choice, the boy said it had a lovely creamy sauce but wasn't anything special). I, however, opted for the burger. If you are anything like me, you know a burger is always a solid way to judge a menu. If you can cook a hamburger properly, your staff know what's up. Too often line cooks over look a simple burger. But having worked in a kitchen, it really does say, "hey what's up? I know how tell If you're medium rare or medium". To die for. I decided to add bacon, because, well, bacon would be my mistress if I swung that way. ;-). Delicious. There was a decadent portion of sautéed onions that were spiced to a sweet perfection. If I had to deal out any constructive criticism, it would be the wait staff. We waited a bit for our beers, and then again on our second round. But from what I understand, they walk all of their alcoholic beverages clear across the hotel lobby for their patrons. So as much as it was a waiting game, i cant hold it against them. i am, after all a bit of a lush. Other than that, there was a server who clumsily knocked over a standing wine chiller. But, to be honest, it was cute, she laughed it off with a sweet smile and proceeded to ask if everyone was enjoying their experience. :-) We will definitely go back when I come back in for a night. We may opt for the bar the next time, however. No wait to get your booze on and they offer an extensive appetizer menu, including the now, infamous Settles Burger. Good eatin', my friends! The Settles Grill will take you back in time......all the way back to your old high school cafeteria. I am just not ready to go back to high school or the Settles Grill. We stopped last night enroute to Dallas. The setting is lovely. High ceilings, wood paneling, booths, and a very interesting photo history of Big Spring. There are several very interesting, and high quality paintings of West Texas throughout the hotel lobby. But, back in the grill, we ordered meatballs ($9) and fried pickles ($7) as appetizers and a green salad. Our entrees were 2 chicken fried steaks ($14 each) and a grilled pork chop ($22). The total bill came to about $75 before tax and tip so this is a pretty pricey spot for West Texas. The pork chop entree was ok.....the spice seasoning was just a little off or a little to weird like the chef was just experimenting. The chicken fried steaks were just terrible! Thin, breaded, and pre-frozen served on top of mashed potatoes with onion ring garnish. These chicken fries were just like the meat patties you used to get at your high school cafeteria or even worse at the all you can eat buffet at Furr's Cafeteria. The first room ( yes I said first room) they booked us in had SOMEONE ALREADY STAYING IN IT Soo they moved us to a bigger room that is so so nice But they came to us and asked us to room to a third room after they booked us into the second room claiming they needed the room because it was a hearing impaired room. So why would they offer a room that's already been booked out? When we called to speak to the manager they hung up On us and lied to us at the desk!!! I've heard so many good things about the hotel and the place -- I will have to go back when I am back in West Texas -- but they have put so much money and done a great job on the hotel. By far the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at. A similar hotel in a bigger town would cost at least $100 more per night. The beds are incredibly comfortable, the shower is huge, granite countertops and flooring in the bathroom, extremely clean, and they have a great bar downstairs which stays open later than anywhere else in town so that is great! I never thought I could stay in somewhere so luxurious in Big Spring, I would come back to the town just to stay here again! read more

Passing thru on I-20 I chose Big Spring for a pit stop with no clue where to eat. I could already see the Settles from a distance. Checking Yelp the Settles Grille's tortilla soup caught my eye and the Settles and their chicken tortilla soup ibecame my choice as well, accompanied by a small fruit cup and coffee. The fruit was sweet, fresh and crisp and the soup, sprinkled with crisp tortilla strips, was hearty with lots of chicken. The trio made a perfect lunch and the surroundings and service were impeccable! A welcome respite from the rigors of Interstate travel on a busy holiday weekend! The hotel looks like a great place for a romantic get away. I would enjoy a dinner here if I didn"t live so far away in California. read more

We had a party of eight with a reservation. It took an hour after the server took our order to receive our meals. The first steak out was very undercooked. My pan fried redfish was cooked properly and flavored well. My grilled asparagus was tough and dry. But my other side dishes were very good. The cheesecake dessert was good as well. read more
