Beautiful historical hotel. Rooms recently renovated. Great location. Friendly/helpful staff at the front desk. We'd definitely stay there again. Needed a room for 3 with elevator, shower stall door, great location and great reviews. (You'll find many Florence hotels don't have elevators or shower stall doors.) And then Orto de Medici became our home for the 5 nights. Rooms - got the junior suite which included 2 twin beds and 2 chairs that could convert to a twin bed. Mini-fridge. Toiletries - olive oil bar soap, conditioning shampoo, shower gel, etc. Two areas to hang clothes. Bathroom had a toilet & sink with door in the back part, and sink & shower stall (very nice rain shower head!) in the front part. Free WIFI. Unique to us was the front doorknobs located in the center of the door which you'll see on the historic doors all over Florence. Interesting is that 2nd key is needed to power all the lights and air/heat -- so when you leave the room, everything is powered off. Also you're required to leave your key w/ the front desk whenever you leave - which you'll want to do based on the heavy weight of they keys :) Oh don't forget to enjoy the complimentary popsicles next to the front desk ... although I think the orange flavor was the only one we liked :) Elevators - just one elevator and it's tiny ... fits 4 people max but just 2 w/ luggage :) Complimentary breakfast - one of our favorite times of the day! Croissants/pastries, cake, toast, scrambled & boiled eggs, bacon, meats, cheese, fresh fruit. Our favorites - the caprese bar (cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, olive oil, balsamic), blood orange juicing machine, coffee/cappuccino machine (every permutation of coffee imaginable!). Everything was good! Andrea was awesome - very friendly, personable and like a ray of sunshine for all of us just waking up :) Nice sunny room too and patio too. Great location - everything is within reasonable walking distance. The Accademia and San Marco museums are really close by. Also some good restaurants nearby too - we enjoyed Simbiosi. Da Mimmo not so much. FYI we booked directly w/ the hotel website - slightly better rates than Expedia. FYI it's about 25 euros taxi ride to/from airport.

The hotel is in a historic building about 0.4mi north of the Duomo and two blocks from the Galleria dell'Accademia de Firenze (where Michelangelo's Davis is located). A laundromat (Il Defino) is only one block away and a small inexpensive grocery store (Pam local) three blocks away. I thought my hotel room in Rome was top notch but this one beat it by a mile. The room is spacious and modern with plenty of outlets, with top notch fixtures in the bathroom. The large shower (6'x3') even has a rainfall shower head in the ceiling. Also plenty of counter space, which my last place did not. The best feature of this hotel was the outstanding front desk staff. They were super-helpful with reservations and other requests, especially since I don't speak any Italian. They made me feel like their friend. I got a great rate through Tripadvisor with free WiFi and free breakfast, although breakfast is not the best I've had on this trip. In fact, the breakfast was my only complaint. There was no hot food, limited selection (cereals, yogurt, a few pastries, one type of fresh cheese, 3 types of lunch meats and hard boiled eggs & you have to ask for coffee (or cappuccino) and it is hard to get more from the busy staff. I always wound up going out and getting another cafe americano. If I had one suggestion, it would be to have some coffee (even instant) in the room with a hot pot. Anyway, I still highly recommend this hotel. (Note: outdoor patio was under renovation, so cannot comment but too cold anyway).

Such a wonderful hotel! Elegant and well-appointed throughout, add outstanding service and the result is a comfortable stay. Super clean, comfortable beds, and incredibly quiet rooms. Breakfast is traditional (charcuterie, cheese, fresh fruit, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, breads. And scrambled eggs and bacon) A bit outside the busiest parts of town yet so easily walkable is a reprieve from the hustling crowds.

The room and bathroom were spacious, luxurious, and beautifully designed. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and every detail of the experience felt thoughtful and elevated. The amenities were fantastic -- especially the unexpected happy hour at the bar, which was such a lovely touch. And the breakfast buffet? Truly unmatched. I'm convinced every future hotel breakfast will pale in comparison. I still think about the incredibly fresh raspberries and strawberries I had every morning! I also loved the robes and slippers provided in the room, which made the stay feel even more comfortable and indulgent. The location is perfect -- close to everything and just steps from the Duomo, yet surprisingly peaceful and not overly noisy. The hotel itself smells amazing and is decorated in such a beautiful, modern style. I honestly can't say enough wonderful things about this hotel. It was worth every penny, and I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

When we got to our room, we loved the view overlooking the street, just one block from the Florence Cathedral. The room was very comfortable, especially after arriving in the rain. As we explored the city, we spoke with Noemi at check-in and asked about the spa services they offered. She was a good listener and helped decide on a package. We looked through the brochure, and she recommended booking in advance to ensure availability. We decided on the €295 couples package, which included a couples massage 30 min/each. The private spa would be booked for two hours total. We booked it for the following day, and she informed us that cancellations were not allowed within 24 hours. Not only was the hotel stay excellent and the service top-tier, but the spa experience was on another level of luxury. We were escorted to a private spa area that included a jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, bathroom, shower, robe and slippers. The massage therapists each gave us a relaxing 30-minute massage. Snacks, berries, and wine were also included. We chose to have them delivered to our room afterwards but you can have it during your spa allotted time. I must say, for any special occasion, this experience is absolutely worth it! Besides the comfortable room and friendly staff, the spa treatment was hands down the highlight of our stay. I can say with certainty that when I return to Florence, I wouldn't be able to stay anywhere else.

Would you spend the night in what used to be a women's prison in the 12th century?…read more The Pagliazza Tower is the oldest building in Florence. It was built in the 6th century AD by the Byzantines as part of the "newer" city walls to augment the older Roman ones and protect the city during the Gothic War. The circular shape, which was rare in the Middle Ages, reflects ancient Roman building techniques. The tower rests on a circular wall that surrounded a swimming pool or Roman thermal bath. In the basement there is a calidarium, with brick floor channels for heat, which would have been used for steam baths. According to our guide, Roberta, it was used as a women's prison in the 12th century. Pagliazza references the straw mat bedding upon which the inmates slept. Later on, it was converted into the bell tower of a church. Eventually it was acquired as a private residence. Today it is home to a luxury hotel with a small museum and restaurants. The museum showcases artifacts from excavations dating back to the Roman and medieval times. Although we didn't stay here, the history of the Pagliazza Tower is very interesting.

Checking in was easy with an accommodating staff. The rooms are nice, but not fabulous, The elevator system confuses everyone! The breakfast (complementary for us) was quite good. While the location is fabulous and the staff quite nice, I expected a slightly nicer room for the price, but as they say, location, location, location.

We were starving, it was rainy and just got off the train from Rome so we even had our luggage. The service was impeccable, they took care of our coats and luggage right away and seated us. The restaurant was peaceful and gorgeous. I still remember thinking "oh awkward we are underdressed for this!" I usually don't get impressed by decors of restaurants but the color and the elements and the layout of the restaurant somehow just gave me the relaxation I needed. We loved our entire experience but the highlight was the food. Every single dish was beautifully prepared and so so delicious. We fell in love with truffle here. And don't think we have had truffle that blew our mind elsewhere after (including Michelin two and three stars). I can taste the chefs mastery of the ingredients. No dish was overly complicated but each ingredient and sauce just complemented each other perfectly. You feel like you are in the forest where the food comes from. It's one of the meals I remember the most vividly, even after 4 years. Even on our culinary journey throughout Italy, this was a clear highlight. My only regret is we didn't purchase the truffle products here. I highly recommend this restaurant!
