I chose to stay at Hotel Nadia because it was the perfect location that centered around all of the popular attractions in Amsterdam. For instance, the Anne Frank House is just a few minutes away, and if you want breakfast, there are several popular pancake spots nearby- including The Pancake Bakery. There's also many souvenir shops, including one right across from the hotel. Of course, I can't forget to mention the Red Light District which is about 15 minutes away by foot. It's as easy to get there as turning right and walking straight until you hit the famous strip.
As a solo traveler, I didn't need anything too fancy to satisfy me. I was mostly outside anyway, so my time spent in my room was few and far between. So, Hotel Nadia was perfect in a sense that it's affordable and doesn't offer too many amenities that wouldn't be required if you're staying in the city for just a few days.
When I arrived at the hotel, I had to ring a bell to be inside, and I panicked because I couldn't seem to open the door at all. The receptionist had to instruct me through the speaker to push the door REALLY hard to get it to open.
I noticed all of their doors- including the one to my bedroom- were very heavy, and one can easily believe they're locked out if they don't exude that extra effort. I don't know if this is just a thing in Amsterdam, but I wasn't happy with needing to use most of my energy to push doors. It's a small upset, but should be noted regardless.
Upon entering, you see the flight of stairs you have to walk up to check into your room, and they looked quite intimidating. The stairs were very steep, and while I understand that it is normal in their culture to have these types of stairs, it still wouldn't feel right not to mention how burdensome it felt to walk them- feeling like any wrong step you might tumble all the way down.
But what matters most to me, beyond anything else, is the customer service, and I hold no complaints in that area. All of the employees were very accommodating and spoke good English. One even offered me a drink as my room was being cleaned, so I sat in their little resting area that had a lot of cards one could use to make their vacation a little more fun. I grabbed one for the "5D Porn" ride that offered a ticket discount, and thanks to this hotel's advertisement, I tried something completely new and unplanned- it was so worth it!
I was given a TV remote, my room key, and a pink piece of paper that I needed to keep on me at all times. Unlike other hotels I've been to, I needed to hand in my room key every time I went outside and when I'd return, I'd show my pink paper to confirm that the key belonged to me and I could get it back. It felt very odd, but I could see the benefit in having such a system. They may have had an incident where people lost their keys, and this is a better alternative to ensure that won't happen again.
The room itself was okay, with all the essentials (e.g mini-fridge, safe, fan) but I quickly discovered that the window could not be closed unless I requested it. That was something I was frustrated with; I didn't see what good it would be to not allow your guests to close their own window whenever they please- especially if there's inclement weather.
The mattress felt soft, but it always felt as if it were slowly falling off the bed frame. I also didn't like the texture of the blanket, and it felt very hard and lumpy over my body. All of the wooden ledges around the room can be a hazard for people as well, especially people who are very tall and even more so, children. I bumped my head at least three times during my stay. There's no shampoo or lotion provided, but there is body wash (contained in a soap dispenser in the shower).
Their breakfast is on the same floor as reception, and I hate to say it, but I didn't enjoy it very much. The options were so few, all I ate was a little bit of bread, a slice of "Laughing Cow" cheese & a bit of yogurt. I'd say it's better if you go and eat at a breakfast/brunch spot instead.
While Hotel Nadia wouldn't be my preferred choice to stay; it was still a helpful place that provided just enough to make my trip go smoothly. With every complaint I had, the employees did go out of their way to fix it, so if you stay here, you will be met with kindness and hard work. Still, I don't know if the pros outweigh the cons with certain folks, considering that there are things that can be hazardous to some travelers, such as the large number of steep stairs and the many ledges. Reverting back to the window, when it's not closed, it can be very easy to fall out with how low it is to the ground. So anybody who is elderly, has joint problems, or is traveling with kids, I would suggest that they refrain from booking this hotel.
I'm afraid I can't avoid addressing issues that could pose danger to guests, but hopefully this grants an opportunity to improve. But, I did leave the hotel with mostly pleasant memories. Thank you! read more
