We spent two night at the Hotel Berna in June. We wanted to find a hotel near the Central train station and this fit the bill. We were able to easily walk to the station with our luggage. I liked the hotel. First, the staff was very friendly. Second, it was close to the train station. Third, it was right down the street from the metro which allowed you to easily access all the different parts of the city. Fourth, your stay includes a very nice buffet breakfast which offers a large selection of items. Overall, I enjoyed my stay at the hotel. read more

Had hours long train delays when supposed to be traveling to Florence decided to spend the night in Milan booked this hotel last minute and couldn't have been happier. They were amazing. Unfortunately, I had to cancel my trip. Even though I booked through a third party, the hotel refunded the cost. Hotel Berna is conveniently located 5 minutes from the Milan central train station and about a 20 minute walk to the Duomo. The man booked the room, so of course they had us listed as one person which to our surprise resulted in us having to pay an additional $50-$60 Euro for me to sleep in the same exact room. Say what? Damn, we just got hosed, Italian style. They have two buildings. Our first stay, we were located across the street from the main building. The room was fine, nothing luxurious, a bit old and dated, but it worked. A free mini bar filled with non alcoholic drinks and free water (both regular and fizzy) downstairs made it kind of nice. A three star room. The complimentary breakfast is great, definitely the best from our European adventure. They bring you fresh coffee of your choice, a huge array of pastries, breads,fruit, juices, meats and cheeses along with eggs and bacon. I was bummed about the extra dough, but overall a solid option. 10 days later we find ourselves staying at Hotel Berna once again. We went renegade (and cheap) this time: I patiently waited for the man to check in, then went up 20 minutes later. SHHHHHH. This time, we were in the main building. What the? Is this the same hotel? The rooms were modern, luxurious almost. Yes the room was a bit smaller, but it was a much better room. Either way, if you get a good rate, with the breakfast and free wifi, Hotel Berna is a great option; just be careful when booking the room and have the accurate amount of people listed. I would also suggest requesting a room in the main building if looking for a bit more modern luxury. read more

A very nice boutique hotel. Clean inviting rooms with very contemporary fixtures and appointments. The upholstered walls kept the room very quiet. Daily fresh towels and emptied trash along with re tucked beds kept the room neat and inviting. The front desk staff were helpful and friendly. As seems to be typical while traveling in Italy, the air conditioning is not the best but it was comfortable enough. The best part of this hotel were the breakfasts. A beautiful assortment of delicious cakes breads cheeses and egg soufflés and many other offerings. Try this hotel it is well worth it. read more

This hotel is located steps from Milan Central railway station and of course metro to all around the city. As expected near train hubs there are a lot of homeless around but aren't all cities like that? Hotel Berna is an older hotel, the lobby is dated but clean and to some has its own charm but for me just dated. In what they may lack they try to compensate in other ways and it's appreciated and noticed! There is a free (check when booking your room) buffet breakfast which starts at 6:30am-11am which is quite a big window compared to the some of the other pricier hotels that I've stayed at. they do not have a hotel restaurant but they offer aperitifs at the bar with an order of a drink during the day and they do make it look pretty! There are plenty of restaurants around should you need a full blown meal as so it's not a huge thing to not have a hotel restaurant for me. The non alcoholic drinks in the room are complimentary which is god sent to anyone after a long flight, who wants to run to the convenience store after a flight anyways? I'm staying on the 5th floor and they have revamped, renovated the entire floor not sure the about the other floors though. The room I'm staying in small but big enough their use of mirrors in the right places def smart. It fits a king size bed and is very comfortable and most importantly clean! There's candy and cookies on the bed should you get hungry before crawling in. Another plus and I'm not sure if anyone else cares about is they have a lot of diff light options and combinations you can have on/off. There are lights to highlight diff areas of the room and the walls and mirrors. I'm very particular on lighting so I ummm love it? Charming ! and so much better than I expected. All in all I'm quite impressed by this establishment and appreciate all the little efforts here and there. It's not a fancy establishment by all means but for me it works and I'm comfortable. Next time I'm in Milan I will def book here rather than the pricier hotels near Duomo like I did last week which cost about $100 more a night. I wish I knew about this place earlier! Oh! And yes they have slippers and bathrobes as well. Their shampoo and liquid soap bottles are much bigger than any other hotels I've ever seen too. Lastly a free rubber ducky should you have little ones at home that may enjoy this? But for me it would just be clutter but so thankful for the gesture! There is a US plug in the bathroom on the hair dryer but if you do not want to use that they offer a universal adapter at the front desk for 3euro. Minus one star for pillows. I was very pleased with this hotel, although it was not my favorite of 4 hotels on my trip to Italy, it had a lot of things going for it. First, I stayed in the annex (which is directly across the street from the main hotel). I am not sure what the differences are - so take what I say to apply to the annex only). Because there is no front desk in the annex, you have to check into the main hotel. Your room key will open the front door to the annex. Once in, you have to use your room key again to open a second inner door that won't open until the first (outer) door closes. There is a small lobby area (two chairs) with a coffee maker and big bottles of water (along with cups/saucers and glasses) that you can drink there or take to you room. That's it - other than the elevators. You need to go to the main building for breakfast or to check out. However, the street is not busy so crossing is no problem. PROS: - The complimentary breakfast was the best spread (variety) of anyplace I stayed in Italy. This was the best feature of the hotel. - Free minibar (restocked with 2 natural water bottles and two sparkling water bottles EACH DAY). That was all that was in the refrigerator so plenty of room for your own refrigerated items. - Plenty of storage space (full closet with plenty of hangers, 3 shelves in closet for storing clothes with safe on top, extra clothing hooks (3) -both bedroom and bathroom plus a leather luggage stand. - Large countertop/desk with glass top. - Hot pot (and instant coffee/tea) to make your own in the room. - Good number of outlets - one in bathroom will accept standard US 110 plug for your shaver. - Good bathroom accessories - shampoo and body gel as well as bar of soap. - Good bed and variety of pillows to chose from. This place gives you a lot of options pre-check-in - Nice thick towels - Was able to buy 1 day (or 2 day) Metro/bus pass at front desk. - Extremely service-oriented staff - most who speak English. - Close to train station and Metro stop. Safe neighborhood. - Good WiFi - Non-smoking - They provided a free welcome gift of a 3.5 ounce panettone - but this may be because I was there a few weeks before Christmas. There were also two chocolates on the bed. CONS: - Dated furnishings - Small room - Carpeted room with ugly carpet. - Has Ethernet ports (does anyone use them anymore?) rather than USB ports. Also while bathroom outlet can accept US 2 plugs - other outlets in room still require an Italian socket adapter. Hotel will sell, but not provide. - High tub to climb over to use shower. - Basically, room (and bathroom) needs to be renovated. There are many restaurants around - one good one next to the main hotel (Osteria Italiano), and more upscale one (Antica Osteria Cavellini), a block away, but also an inexpensive grocery store around the corner (Penny Market Express) where I got a variety of salamis, cheese and a good 1.5 euro bottle of wine, and a Conrad's Sapori & Dintorni's in the train station that has a bigger variety (especially prepared foods), for a simple lunch. Also two cafeteria style places (Antares and City Life) for an inexpensive meal. Overall very happy with my selection - would give the 4.5 stars if I could. Hotel Berna was a wonderful find! The staff is efficient and accommodating. The breakfast buffet each day is OUTSTANDING!! They also had a free tapas buffet every evening that was amazing, and you could actually nosh here and forego dinner - that's how good it was! The rooms were absolutely lovely. I had a single which was truly a single bedded room, small, but very comfortable. It still had a beautiful marble bath, and a desk area, big closet with safe, and TV and fabulously strong wifi. I even used their dry cleaning service which was worth every penny, and wasn't extraordinarily expensive. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. And LOTS of great restaurants, osterias, and trattorias in the immediate area! read more

This was the best hotel we stayed at in Italy. For the price we paid, we got tons of amenities and a nice clean sleek updated room in the annex tower just across the street from the main building. They email you before your stay to get your preferences: soft toilet paper, types of drinks for the fridge, pillows, etc! Non alcoholic drinks in the fridge are free. They gave us biscuits and candy for free too. Free breakfast buffet includes fresh fruit, freshly squeezed juices, cappuccinos and coffee, pastries, yogurt, slices hams and cheese, and eggs and sausage. They even had a juicer so you could make your own carrot juice! Staff is extremely friendly and definitely left a great impression on us! Would stay here again! read more

I came to visit Milan during a weekend and booked this hotel for a one-night stay. It was probably one of the cheapest and highly rated hotels. It definitely offered a great value with free breakfast, WIFI, and mini bar. The breakfast was the buffet style and food weren't too bad. However, most of the dishes were cold, such as the quiche. The location was pretty convenient but too close to the Milano Centrale, where a lot of refugees were staying. The area wasn't as safe as I expected. Some staff were very friendly and offered water during my check-out. Some were mean, maybe I didn't speak Italian to them. The room was smaller than I thought. I got a standard room with two twin beds. One of the bed sheets had some yellow stain on it. The rags on the floor were pretty dirty as well. Everything needed an upgrade. read more

Convenient to Milan's Central Station, Comfortable This is a very nice and reasonably priced hotel very close to Milan's Central railway station, and thus convenient to the train from the airport. Our room was very clean and well appointed, the included breakfast was very good, and the staff was friendly and professional. It is about a 45 minute walk or a $10 taxi ride to the Duomo (Cathedral), from which it is easy to walk to other major museums in Milan as well as Cenacolo Vinciano which houses The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci. Hint: It's a pretty short walk with wheeled luggage from the Central Station, but consider printing out a map so you know the direct route out of the front of the railway station -- Via Napo Torriani is about 11 o'clock as you leave the front of the station. (Upon arrival at the Central Station, our US phones were not immediately synched but fortunately a local passerby looked the address up on his phone and guided us as we were disoriented). read more

This hotel is not anything luxurious. It's simple, clean and well staffed. They have a 24 hour food bar, wonderful wifi and a great breakfast (the highlight of the stay). Another plus is it's close proximity to the metro and train station. There are many fine restaurants and shopping placed within walking distance. The only thing that might draw people away is that it is not the newest hotel around. The hotel's decor, some rooms and bathrooms are dated but fully functional. There is a newly renovated side across the street and some remodeled floors in the main building. I would most definitely recommend this hotel for guests staying a few nights in Milan and hunting for a bargain. read more

Second stay here, but it didn't live up to the first. Main issue was the room was too hot -- we were told air conditioning was turned off for season because the weather had turned colder, but bizarrely the room and the common areas were several degrees warmer than the outside temperature. It really got quite uncomfortable for an early November stay -- and we were hardly the only ones complaining about the situation. Hotel seemed powerless (no pun intended) to help, but at their price and rating level (four stars in Italian system), room temperature should simply not be an issue. Also, the hotel is on a street with a fair bit of late-night club and bar activity. Which means if you're given a room facing the street, as we were, you can be in for some rough nights (we were woken up at about 3 am one night). Compounding the problem was the fact we were leaving the windows somewhat open because....the room was so hot! I also seem to recall on my previous visit that the hotel staff made sure the room fridge was filled with sodas of your choice. This time, we got three sodas the first night and nothing after. We were told the bottles of water should be supplied no matter what (apparently the sodas are now just for the first night only), but that took an extra request to the front desk to make happen. Still, the breakfast is tops, the staff is generally friendly and the location is fairly central (indeed, you're steps away from Central Station). But given the issues above, I might look elsewhere the next time I'm in Milan. read more

This is a great tourist hotel near the central train station. The breakfast buffet was incredible. The rooms (we had a large group and 3 different rooms in different parts of the hotel - one section of rooms is across the street) were very clean and they stock your fridge with the beverages you order in advance online. No hidden extra charges - strong wifi, free beverages in your room and excellent customer service. They recommended the restaurant Settembrini 18 a few blocks a way and we had some of the best pizza of our entire Italian trip there. This isn't a romantic destination hotel but it's a great place to spend a night or two. For us it was the perfect overnight after flying in from the US, we were able to walk (with kids and luggage) to the train station the next day for the next leg of our journey well-rested and stuffed from the breakfast buffet! read more

Great location, right by Milano Centrale (but you can't hear anything). Speaking of which, be careful of pickpockets at the station, they loiter around the ticket machines waiting to rip off somebody (not sure how). We also observed a young boy try to pickpocket someone on the escalator, so watch out. The staff of the hotel is excellent, very friendly, especially the bartender Max. The room was small but comfortable. SO was super excited about the 110 volt socket so he could charge his Nintendo. Excellent wi-fi. Now, to the negatives: the breakfast buffet was not as impressive as it seemed at first and the options were pretty much the same every day. This is a great little hotel in the heart of Milan, easily walkable with luggage from Stazione Centrale, and close to the Porta Venezia district for some interesting nightlife. Restaurants abound in the area, and a laundromat is an easy 10-minute walk away if you want to do your own. Excellent and generous full English breakfast, and good TV in the rooms and bar. Showers a bit small, per the usual European take on them, but the overhead rainshower and hand spray were both nice. Toilets were generous by Euro-standards, and normal by US ones. Single bed was nice and comfortable, though placement of TV could have been better. VERY nice to arrive to a mini-fridge stocked with cold water and drinks of choice, and NOT have to pay for them! Room was quiet and on an upper floor, per my request, and away from lift, too; these people pay attention to and deliver on reasonable requests! My laptop broke down the first day of my trip, but the hotel has 4 in-lobby desktops, which they are not stingy about letting guests use for things other than just printing boarding passes. Staff were friendly and very professional, evidencing their Swiss management style, which made for an excellent stay, and bodes well for future ones. read more

I was so excited to stay in this "luxury" hotel in Milan. After it was recommended by a family friend, we figured it would be a great experience. We were wrong! Our first room in this "non smoking" hotel, stunk of smoke. When were asked to change, they reluctantly gave us another room. The bed sheets were ripped, the chair had stains all over it, the shower door would not close properly and the lights would randomly go out. All we got for our inconvenience was some Toberlone chocolate! And to make matters worse, when they brought our car back to us it smelled of smoke as well with ashes all over the seat. I don't mind paying money for a nice hotel, but I expect to get what I paid for and this was no where near worth it. read more

This is the WORST hotel I have ever stayed at in my life!!! We came on our honeymoon, they did not have a bel hop, the staff was NOT friendly or helpful. I would NOT recommend this hotel to anyone.
