Service was wonderful! The staff went above and beyond to help us with directions. The rooms were wonderful and the terrace, terrace bar and pool area were peaceful and relaxing. read more

We loved our stay at Hotel Barcelona Universal! Our red-eye flight arrived around 8:30am or so. When we arrived at the hotel, they had a room ready for us. Very, very grateful since we were wiped. The staff is very nice and accommodating. Ronald greeted us at the front door, helped bring in our bags, all with a smile. He was so happy to give us directions or suggest restaurants- his interactions alone would bring us back to this hotel. The rest of the staff was very nice, even printing out our cruise luggage tags when asked. The breakfast is beyond compare - huge spread of eggs, pastries, breads, yogurts, meats, coffee, water, fruit, teas and desserts! Yummy! Tapas for dinner was a great experience. If the staff and food wasn't enough, the location is excellent. There is a metro stop right outside of the hotel which made traveling really easy. One day we used the hop on/hop off bus. Very easy to find and just down the road and a left. Highly recommended since you see the city without a ton of walking. We would not hesitate to use this hotel again! read more

Overall a great stay! This hotel is steps to a metro stop, but I did realize was a short taxi ride away from landmarks like the Port of Barcelona and the Barcelona Cathedral. The WiFi worked fine, which is always a plus. Cool perks included the events like beer tasting and live music which we unfortunately missed due to timing/jet lag. The rooftop pool area was stunning! It was too cold to swim, but the views of the city were very memorable. Staff was friendly as well. Unfortunately our room had no windows, but we honestly didn't spend much time in the room. The best part was the breakfast buffet! Too bad we were in a hurry so we didn't spend much time down there, but there was a nice variety of meats, cheeses, pastries, quiche, eggs, cereals, and mimosas! Would consider staying here again next time. read more

I love this place. This was one of the best hotels I ever stayed in. The bed was comfortable and cozy. Perfect after a day of flighting and walking around. The room was super clean and the toiletries were amazing. The hotel is super close to the metro stop and it was easy to get to the airport. The area is nice and has shops as well as restaurants. The hotel has a restaurant in it. The cocktails were amazing, especially the Irish coffee. They also have events like beer tasting and live music. The hotel has a rooftop pool and gym but it was closed for the winter. The staff was incredible, they made us feel at home, especially Carlos. He was super kind and patience with us at check in. I would have given this hotel 5 stars were it not for my check out experience. The room was extremely comfortable,, very roomy and the breakfast was excellent. The AC in the room works amazingly well which is rare in Europe. It's central air so it's not noisy at all. I could not go to the pool as it was August and very crowded all the time. Everything was super clean and the staff (except at checkout, I'll tell more about it later) was absolutely amazing, the two male receptionists I had to deal with were extremely friendly. The bellboys were so nice and helpful and congratulations to the housekeeping team. I travel weekly for work all around the world and it's the first time in my 25 years travelling and staying at hotels weekly that housekeeping is done as I'm having breakfast! Wow! I mean it was the best experience ever! I only gave 4 stars because I had asked the day before if I could have a 30 mn late checkout grace period and was told I'd have to ask in the morning. Something happened last night and I had to call a doctor at 9 this morning for a house call. They told me they'd send someone between 10 and 11. So I called downstairs and asked if I could check out at 11.30. The woman that answered was so blunt and NASTY, telling me I could not do that. When I told her I had no other option (I had been staying there for a week) she said "well if you're going to do it, do it" but in a very aggressive tone. Doctor ended up coming at 10.30 and I vacated the room at 11.15. When I checked out there were two female receptionists. The one I dealt with must have been the one I had talked to just before as she could not have been more unfriendly and blunt. Didn't ask how my one week stay had gone. NOTHING! It's really a pity this unprofessional receptionist works there, she is damaging the image I'll keep of this hotel. And it's really unfortunate as the rest of the staff is wonderful. By the way people complain about the elevators taking forever. I only had issues around 10-11 am, which is the time when people have breakfast and check out. But it didn't bother me too much. read more

Just right: service impeccable. Wooden floors and interior ambience. Amazing 360 degree views from rooftop bar and pool. Welcoming 1st floor restaurant and bar with free beer tastings and live bands. Underrated: location!! Omg the carrer de Blai and the area southwest of the Ave Parallel is where it's at. All the best food, taprooms and outdoor dining is here! It's also a quick walk to train station, gothic area and La Ramba! Price. We paid ~$200 a night. Very worth it compared to some of the other options that were much more expensive. neg: The shower is kind of stupid and water leaks all over the place. Housekeeping knocks even if you have Do Not disturb up. wifi was very shoddy on smart phones but fine w laptop read more

Man, it kind of hurts to write this review...and really I hate writing 1 star reviews overall, but I can't justify not writing it. Now, the stay was actually really good. Location, comfort, etc...were all great. But it's what happened after our stay that really made me reconsider the stay...and question the people that were entering my room every day to clean. So, we pack up and head out on our last day...with an overwhelmingly positive view of this hotel. Then we get home. CRAP...I left $200-250 in cash in the safe in the room. It was still locked, so I thought there was a good chance it would still be there right? Wrong. After calling the hotel - they said I must email. So I did. I heard back two days later...and they said nothing was found in my room. I replied back and explained that the safe was locked...so unless someone had a master code there was no way they could of opened it. They never replied back. I assume this happens fairly often -and the ideal situation is that only a manager has the master code to reset the safe. Someone trustworthy and high up on the chain at the hotel....and perhaps this is the case, but either way, whoever opened the safe kept the money. So either - 1) Only managers have the code and the manager opened the safe or 2) Everyone has the master code. Either way this renders the safe virtually useless. What's the point of it if people can crack the code? I guess this is something I should of known....safes in hotels are useless. I only put my money in there to keep it safe from pickpockets, but at the end of the day I was still robbed. I actually have never used safes before....now that I think of it. With that said, it made me reconsider my entire stay. These people were going into my room every day...with various valuables in my room. This situation totally made me lose trust in them....and unfortunately I will never recommend them to anyone - especially with so many hotel options in Barcelona. Will $200-250 make or break me? Of course not, but it certainly destroyed my perception of this hotel. read more

Stay here. After a long day of walking around the city end your journey in either of these two places ; 1) Respiro; a small, outdoor bar across the way from the hotel. Sit, have some vino and people watch. 2) the bar @ Barcelona Universal hotel ; should Carlos the bar tender be working there, do yourself a favor and order a gin and tonic. He smashes and adds juniper berries, the fruit gin is flavored with, along with sour apple slices. Beautiful, magical stuff. His English is excellent as well should you wish to have a conversation with a local that doesn't involve your broken Spanish / Catalan. One of the best old fashioned I've had is from this bar as well. Stay here. read more

This was truly a wonderful place to stay for visiting Barcelona. It's in a nice part of town, close to the port and La Ramla, as well as the Poble Sec neighborhood and Barcelonetta. It's central to everything you need. The metro station is feet from the door! They have amazing staff, a rooftop bar with views of the whole city, as well as a pool! They have great restaurants, and very nice rooms. I loved the restaurants nearby. Honestly I couldn't have been happier with our choice to stay here for TEN days!! I've written a lot of 5-star reviews, but few are truly as deserving of it as this one. You won't regret staying here. read more

We chose to stay at this hotel on our recent stay in Barcelona because we had stayed here almost ten years ago. We arrived very early in the morning of our check in day, and we requested that our luggage be kept by them which they graciously accommodated. Since we had arrived early, and we were not heading out for another two hours in what was a very cold and rainy day, we went up to the restaurant for coffee, but we were not able to get any because of not being checked in until 3:00 pm. The restaurant sent us back down to the lobby telling us that there was a coffee machine there. However, it was not operating. I had to ask if they could get a cup of coffee for us from the restaurant. It should have been done without us asking if hospitality was important to them. However, it is NOT! The coldness and lack of service continued throughout our stay. Our room check-in was late by almost fifty minutes, and they did not bother to come to us to explain or to offer any apologies as we sat in the lobby. I requested change for twenty Euros, but I was told that couldn't make change because they'd run out of cash if they did so. The gal with an "N" tattooed on her chest told me that I could go next door in the heavy rain if I wanted change. The promise of a doorman being available to hail a taxi early in the morning did not materialize! There was no assistance whatsoever. We stood out front with taxi upon taxi passing us by, so I went into the lobby to have them request a taxi large enough to fit our suitcases for us. I was met with a bad attitude and indignation instead. While I went in to request the taxi, my husband was lucky enough to have one stop to provide service. I was going right in to tell them to cancel the taxi request, but to my surprise, one of the rude desk staff came out to yell at me that we had requested a taxi, but we had hailed one too. He didn't politely ask what had transpired instead he jumped to erroneous conclusions. On top of the bad service, the suite we had booked had a horrendous dilapidated sofa which could barely be sat on. The bathroom configuration was awful as well! There is no free-standing shower. Instead it has a large jacuzzi tub with steps to ingress and egress which are cumbersome and could be dangerous as they are slippery. There was one plug in a blow dryer unit which didn't work. The bath robes they had for use were old and rough. Nothing in this room was suite quality! It is also loud at night as party crowds abound on the streets. We will never return to this hotel, and we will not recommend it to a plethora of people we know who travel. read more

Great find! You can only research so much when you travel somewhere new, but we were overly impressed with this hotel. Convenient location to the Parallel train station which will get you most places (get the T-10 pass for ~$10 rather than pay $2/ride, plus you can share it with a friend). Or close to the bus which will take you into Barceloneta (the beach!). Also, nearby there was a bike rental option we used, called Donkey Bikes. Or its less than a 20 min walk to the center of the Gothic or Born which we did easily every day. Our favorite part was the proximity to Carrer de Blai, a super foodie street (where I recommend the pinchos!). Our meeting spot for our foodie tour was just across the street and the Magic Fountain was also closeby. The hotel has a stylish lobby, a free beer tasting in the 2nd floor restaurant daily at 6pm and the best part was the rooftop pool and bar. We utilized this after a hot day walking around and even days after the beach as well as late night for a nightcap. For the reasonable price, this was a great find and I would stay there again if I am lucky enough to make it back to Barcelona. read more

Good hotel for the price. Clean room and nice sized shower -- they even allowed me to check in early. Only knock is that breakfast is not included and the room had a odd smell. If staying here I'd recommend getting an interior room as it will be quieter and easier to sleep. read more

I had a wonderful stay at Hotel Barcelona Universal. The Barcelona Metro 'Parallel' station is right outside the hotel. You can also get on the Montjuïc funicular from this station as well. La Rambla is about a fifteen minutes walk from the hotel if you want to take a stroll instead of taking the metro. The room was clean and comfortable. There was a sign at the check-in counter that says the hotel isn't responsible for any thefts in the room that aren't stored in the safe though. While that was a bit unsettling, just make sure you lock up all your valuables in the safe. I would definitely stay here again if I ever go back to Barcelona. read more

We spent 5 days here and haven't been disappointed at all!! When we arrived our room was ready for check in even though we arrived early. Front desk service was awesome and full of suggestions for food and sightseeing. Room was very clean and stylish. The hotel is central to everything we wanted to visit and much more. The proximity to restaurants, souvenir shops and tourist attractions was great. We walked everywhere and the weather was impeccable. The morning Buffet was fantastic! From fresh fruits to pastries and eggs and bacon to fresh fruit juices and tea. Everything was fresh and delicious. Service once again was fantastic! This hotel is in a good location for a Barcelona getaway. It's walking distance to lots of sights, shopping, & eating. The beds are adequately comfortable with nice pillows, and decent bedding. My daughter, who is a grad student living in UK student housing, was happy to see & use the full bath, something she doesn't have in her dorm. The roof top pool is nice & the small gym is sufficient. They have a business centers and bar. It's clean, fresh and a little modern. There is quite a bit of road noise, which is a bummer. read more

Next to some of the disney hotels I've stayed in in Florida, this is by far the best Hotel I've ever been to. I loved this place. Wooden floors, spacious, super comfortable and large bedding. Big bathroom and shower/tub. I paid roughly 100/night (on a deal through expedia) and for that price it's easily the best I've been to. Locally there's a McDonald, a casino, a park and a few stores... And the best one? A train station literally steps away from the entrance. The hotel is a small walk away from the Rambla as well. I came as a tourist to visit the sites and felt this hotel was in a perfect area. Location, location, location! Staff was friendly, always clean and refreshing when I came back home. I wouldn't even consider another hotel if I came back to Barcelona. Fantastic place. read more

The rooms, the location, the linens, and the location were 4 stars across the board. The room had a decent layout, everything is updated and gives you plenty of space to relax. We had an enormous patio with a "city view" that consisted of the local residents hanging their laundry to dry out their back windows. We had our patio doors open most of the day, enjoying the sounds of Barcelona. The hotel staff was cool but the door guys were a bit creepy. I can't really pinpoint why they were creepy but they weren't the type of personalities that you would expect when you walk through the front doors of a hotel. We came in very late several times after boozing it up in the streets and they would just look at us like we were aliens. Overall it was a clean and well kept hotel that I would stay at again but it really didn't blow my nonexistent hair back. The price was right and the kabob shop next door was a cheap option that proved to be a life saver. Ended up costing us about $30 in a cab from the airport but that seems to be about standard. Once we were in Barcelona we walked everywhere and no longer needed public transportation. Bonus: -Free Wi-Fi -Walking distance to lots of restaurants and night scene read more

Driving towards the hotel, it was kind of sketchy and it also didn't help that they weather was gloomy and dark. We had a room to the back and it faced the neighboring homes with our view were clothes on clothes line. But even if we had a room to the front, the view wouldn't have been much better. The front desk was nice and check in with quick and painless. The only thing is that they room was freezing and it took a while for the heat to warm up the room. It was good size room with a nice size bathroom. The wifi was strong so that was nice. I had no major complaints except that it lack adequate lighting. The room lack a lot of charm but it was still a comfortable place to call home for 3 nights. The best thing and the reason why I booked this hotel is the close proximity to the subway station. It is only about ten steps away. If you have internet service, download the free metro app. It really helped us out a lot. Also next door it a currency exchange place that charges next to no commission fees. It is only a 10 minute walked Las Ramblas and I felt safe walking around there during the day on the main street. We did walked on a small street one time and that was quite sketchy. Also five minutes from the hotel is Quimet y Quimet which is MUST!! One of the best meals of my life!! All in all for the price we paid, I was happy with our stay. But next time, I think that I rarely stay in the Barri Gothic. read more

We had an excellent stay at this hotel and if I ever go back to Barcelona I will be sure to book here again. We stayed for 6 nights and evey day/night was a great experience. We included breakfast buffet which was superb and has great hours from 0700-1100. The hotel is close to Rambas Street nd Waterfront, about 10 min walking leisurely. Not only that, the metro is right outside the hotel, very convenient! The rooms are spacious, clean and very modern. Definetly surpassed my expectations for a European hotel at this price. Yes, we could hear the noise from outside on the 8th floor but it was bearable and the air conditioner drowned out most of the noise, plus we were so tired by the time we came to the room, even myself, a light sleeper, could sleep with the background noise of the lively street below The staff is very helpful. We arrived early before checkin and they stored our luggage, gave us a map and explained where we were and circled all the main attractions, and helped with questions we had for our touring. Once they even flagged a taxis for us. The only downfall is the gym hours (0800-2000) and the wifi not reaching there. If the gym was open even an hour earlier and wifi was available to the gym, I would have nothing bad to say. read more

Don't judge a book by its cover. When we first arrived the outside appearance of the hotel wasn't the most flattering nor was it unflattering it was just meh. However, once inside the hotel it was really nice and modern. We arrived at 7 am and despite the fact that check in was at 3, they gave us a really nice room with great views as soon as we arrived. We didn't have to wait until 3! The hotel staff was simply delightful and amazing. They were always kind. A lot of the staff spoke multiple languages and in general they were pleasant. The bar staff was great, especially Carlos. Very nice bartender ! In addition The hotel restaurant had good paella. Also , the cleaning staff was great also. We spent 10 days here and we loved every single day. The staff was efficient and courteous and very helpful with directions. The room was bright and clean and we loved the speakers in the bathroom! Housekeeping was impeccable. We were never pressured to have the room cleaned and sometimes we slept in late but no matter what time we left, the room was done when we got back. Breakfast buffet was delicious and fresh every morning. They served from 7 to 11am which was great for us who ate late. The hotel was right near the metro station and so convenient to every landmark. There were 2 fabulous tapas restaurant within a 3 minute walk from the hotel. It wasn't especially fancy but it was quiet and comfortable. The roof terrace was amazing, there was a pool and many places to lounge with a great view of the city. The bar was opened late so you can go to the roof after a busy day or after dinner and have a relaxing drink. Stopped into Barcelona and stayed here on a Saturday night. This hotel is very convenient to the Metro. The room was nice and bed was comfortable. I also liked the bathroom shower stall because you can actually close the door versus a lot of the open ended or no curtain ones I've seen in Europe. The rooftop area has a decent view of the city, but since it was still cold outside, I only grabbed one drink up there. The pool is a small one and it's not heated. If I got more time to hang out and check out the restaurant, I'm sure I would give this place another star. No complaints. read more

My husband and I stayed here during our honeymoon in March. The hotel is in a great location. Very close to a lot of top sights. The subway station is literally right outside of the hotel which makes it so convenient to get around. Our room was nice and big, it had two separate spaces. The only complaint I had was that the shower door was short so you had to be careful not to splash too much in the shower otherwise there would be water all over the floor. Although I think this is just how showers are made in Europe since we had a similar experience in Italy and France. The hotel has a nice breakfast buffet for an extra cost and a nice bar. There is a rooftop bar also but we never got to check it out since we were busy sight seeing. I would definitely stay here again! read more

This hotel was superb! Service was friendly; rooms were modern and immaculate; buffet breakfast was ample and delicious! The kind service personnel even tolerated my mediocre Spanish, rather than annoyingly switching to English. They quickly understood that I wanted to practice my Spanish. We stayed at this hotel for a couple days before heading off on a cruise. What a pleasant surprise! Fantastic location, superb customer service, particularly from Daniel, clean, quiet, & modern room and facilities, free computer use in the lobby, badass views of the city from the rooftop, plus late check-out and breakfast included in our reservation. We are truly sad to leave. The only reason I knock it down a star is that the room was extremely dark. Trivial, I know. This was truly the only downside of the hotel which was otherwise a fantastic find. read more

We booked a standard room with breakfast at this hotel for 4 nights, when we arrived they have upgraded for free our room. The hotel is nice and conveniently located, close to subway station. The breakfast has a large variety of food options, good and tasty too. The reason I'm rating this hotel one star is because of the bad experience we had during our stay. It turned out we had bedbugs in our bed/room. After the first night my husband woke up and had little rushes and itchy skin in several places on his body, initially we thought it was some food allergies or maybe the food we've eaten was not that fresh.... After the second night his rushes became larger more itchy and a lot more, and pretty much in a straight line, mostly on one side of his body, very unusual pattern for food allergies or some sort of food intolerances, although we carefully watched and picked all the food before eating something....Also after the first night I saw a small bug on his pillow but paid very little attention to what it was. Third night before going to bed we had figured it out and were sure he was bitten by bedbugs. We inspected the bed and the room but couldn't see any, even considered not to turn the lights off at night and have everything packed and closed in our luggages. Next morning we've seen a few bedbugs again and decided to speak to the staff and change the room. My husband tells them we have to change the room because that room has bedbugs. The receptionist asked to wait a second, goes in the back, comes back and tells us they can put us in another room. While I try showing the receptionist the movie and the pictures I took in the room emphasizing this should never ever happen again, she's not willing to watch, she tells me she believes me and this might happen frequently with travelers going different places, by planes, etc... (This is not tourists expectations for a 4star, well rated hotel, which travels quite a bit and never experienced anything like this). While I obviously have a different opinion and I think the staff of the hotel should have had a different, at least apparently, attitude at least feel sorry and reassure us they'll take all the measures that this will never happen again, she continues telling us that they'll clean our clothes for free. She also would had offered us a free breakfast but checking our reservation she noted we already purchased that. She also let us know if we want to speak with the manager he'll be there next day at 8 o'clock (forgetting to check with us our departure time-sarcastically said). I let her know that speaking to her I hope my message gets across to the management team as well. While I do not expect anything for free I hope the staff will read this and do their very best that none of the future customers will experience what my husband did with the bedbugs! read more

We were extremely happy with this hotel - the only downside being the in-room lighting, the bulbs are so very dark you can barely see. Very good internet, very clean. A bit disconcerting at first to look out our rear-hotel windows and see apartment balconies strewn with drying laundry, but heck, that's what Europe's about, isn't it? The balconies are terrifically close, but it's quieter in the back than the front. I wouldn't go for the breakfast, at 15 EU it's hardly worth it for the basics, though I guess if quantity is your preference it would be fine. WARNING - no coffee makers in the rooms. You can purchase a little plug-in hot pot for about 12-15 EU, which is what we did. ALSO, the rack rate is very high, but they will work with you in a serious way. We paid about 100EU per night for rooms with two beds. Nice staff. read more

AWESOME EXPERIENCE. At the initial start the front desk provided us with a map and gave us helpful tips and tricks on where to go and what to do in the city. We then got to check in early, but the room was facing an interior courtyard and we wanted to be able to look out into the city. We asked the front desk, and they switched us to the 7th floor with a view of the city. It was beautiful and extremely nice of them. They also moved all of our luggage to the new room and provided us with an outlet adapter for US. The views from the rooftop are breathtaking and it is a short walk from Las Ramblas, barcelonetta (beach), and old town. We arrived to Barcelona on 7/10/12 . stood there for 5 days. The hotel was very clean and in good condition in a great location. outside the hotel the train station is literally at the end of the block to your right. I cannot tell you how this was for my husband and i. We took the train everywhere even to the major sights, like La (a must see). We traveled up to the in the mountains with a beautiful view of Barcelona. It took about an hour to get there in train but it was nice getting out of the city life in Barcelona. The hotel is about a 6min walk to the main center of attraction which is full of restaurants and little souvenir shops. People just sit at a table have a drink and watch the view. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT EATING IN ANY OF restaurants. The food quality is a negative and over priced. We at there once ( was very . if you want some good Tapas which is was they eat there ask the workers in the hotel. Every recommendation we were very pleased with. we even had Italian one night and it was excellent and a 5 min walk from the hotel. one was la (very good tapas) but a very long wait after 9pm try and get there early. Expect to have very late dinners in Barcelona. it seems no one sleeps there. The beach at night is beautiful and so much fun. The clubs are right off the beach. so check it out. They will be promoters in selling tickets to get into the clubs about 15 euros each and that includes transportation to the club, club entry and a drink in the meeting bar. (fun night!!) . Barcelona is a party city. I loved it but i was ready to move on after 5 days. Enjoy it!!! Oh bye the way they have free wi-fi so you can email anyone over seas. read more
