Stayed here at the end of a work trip for four days. The Good Great location within walking distance of anything and everything. Beautiful, well-appointed building, lobby sitting areas, restaurant, etc. Staff were friendly and very accommodating with bag storage, delivering bags to our room before we returned, restaurant recommendations and more. The rooftop is big with pool, bar and a number of seating areas for a 360 view of the city. Relaxing place to sit with a drink. Spa in basement is nice with all amenities. You have to reserve use and it's capped at 30 mins. Rooms are decent size allowing for suitcases and still moving around room. Bathroom is clean and has everything needed including heated towel rack and bidet. Although robes weren't included we found some at spa we used for the remainder of our trip. Lobby is very spacious and comfy, and there is live music in Thur-Sun. Great place to relax with a drink after exploring all day. Breakfast was extensive and a nice start to each day. Included made to order as well as plenty of ready made options for all palettes. The Not as Good We reserved both a superior and classic room but couldn't tell the difference for an additional 130 euros. The front desk said the superior had "more light." Potentially but not sure that was described as difference for what we paid. The rooms lack power outlets. Nothing by bedside. USB by desk but no USB-C or Int'l plugs. We had phones plugged in behind chairs, tea kettle sitting on floor, laptop in bathroom... The subway is underneath the hotel and even though we're on the 4th floor it was loud with lots of vibration. We had Do Not Disturb on for our entire trip but staff entered regardless and made up room. Not a big deal but surprised us and meant we had to put our belongings away every time we left not knowing who would enter when. Overall it was a pleasant stay and we would come back but many hotels we passed by looked like good options as well. read more

My hubby and I stayed 2 nights at Hotel 1898 on La Rambla while in Barcelona, and what a beautiful hotel. When my husband booked, he was able to add some special touches for our anniversary through their booking options. Once I walked into the room, there were a dozen long-stemmed roses, champagne, and chocolate cake! The room was very nice and looked out to the street. Last time I went to Barcelona was 2023 and I stayed at Hotel 1898. It was so fabulous that I had to return. STILL FABULOUS! A classy and elegant but not pretentious hotel in Barcelona. Located in La Rambla and a few minutes walk to must see places like La Boqueria, Placa de Catalunya and Passeig de Gracia. Facilities and service were excellent. We were welcomed in our room with a bottle of chilled Cava and provided with free daily breakfast which was not included in our original booking. Aside from the daily room cleaning, Hotel 1898 also provides daily turn-down service. Definitely a must stay place in Barcelona. read more

If you're visiting Barcelona... STAY HERE! This is perhaps one of the best hotels I've ever stayed at. The pool and sauna were such an incredible feature to enjoy as a break away from the high energy of the city. Plus, there's a rooftop pool too with beautiful views. There's also live music in the evenings in the hotel lobby! Our room had an all jade bathroom that was just beautiful. The location couldn't be better either. You can walk EVERYWHERE from this hotel! Nice room but a bit small and dark. 2nd day no drinking water and fresh coffee cups but no coffee. Bath sink plunger stuck down when closed for my shave. Subway runs 24/7 and rumbles room so not restful. Rooftop has pool and bar and restaurant. Great city views. Excellent wait staff. Pool ice cold. Breakfast buffet is extensive and regional with many good choices. Don't miss the champagne when you walk in. Not advertised but ask for custom omelet from staff. We've been to Barcelona a few times now and stayed in some lovely places but Hotel 1898 stands out. Pristine, with some really beautifully done spaces including a library/workspace. In our Superior room we were met with cold champagne and the decor is gorgeous. In La Rambla but QUIET. Staff is responsive and kind. Restaurant is delicious for dinner. Best of all is the breakfast buffet it's smashing with everything from cereal and yogurt to Catalonian specialties, a mini Full English and eggs made to order. Our daughter couldn't make it in time (7 am to 11 am) and they gave me a tray to take hers to to her room. Epic. read more

My wife and I stayed here and the put us in a 4th floor room facing the Ramblas. While we were prepared for crowd noise we were not prepared for the metro trains running under the hotel until after midnight and starting up again at 5am. The room literally vibrated making sleeping all but impossible. Couple that with no baggage help, no concierge, somewhat diffident staff and an all out scrum with the guests at breakfast this became at best a 3 star experience. It's crazy to me that they try to sell a room that has a train run below it every 5-10 minutes. The rooms that face into the patio get a sliver of light making it dark and unwelcoming. The gym is terrible, but their one saving grace is the rooftop bar, which you don't need to be a guest to visit. During the same trip I stayed at another hotel under the same brand, seventy barcelona, which was much nicer and more modern. read more

I could go on endlessly about this place and how amazing it was!!! Man oh man if you want location- this IS it! Right on La Rambla the most amazing street in Barcelona. However we slept nightly with our terrace door open and wasn't woken once. Noise is not a problem. We spent time at the hotel bar with Eyder the best bartender around. He made us feel at home and made great drinks with a wonderful attitude. The hotel has 2 pools both gorgeously done. I would have liked the lower one a little bit warmer, still too chilly for me! There is an amazing view from the roof too. It's also a 15 minute walk to the beach or cable car up the mountain. I loved it here and look forward to coming back!!! read more

Stayed here on my trip to Barcelona literally was a step away from everything, this place is smack down in the Gothic Quater area..we had the best of sight seeing, restaurants, bars, cafes, and metro stations in our pocket. I was upgraded to their superior room as courtesy on arrival. The room was hugeeeee in comparison to European standards with a cute view of a picturesque street. They had Etro toiletries in the bathroom! Their spa is mind blowing consisting of steam room, dry sauna, gym, and pool all free to use and ahhhhmazing ($$$) massage treatments which I signed up for were wonderful! We stayed at the Hotel 1898 for 5 nights in mid July 2024. It is a beautiful hotel and the staff is excellent! The beds are very comfortable and the rooms are quiet, even though the hotel is right on the very busy La Rambla. The location is perfect! it is easy to walk to the different neighborhoods to explore, to the ocean and to the major sites in the city.The pool and bar on the rooftop is wonderful and from there you get a 360 degree view of the city and Montjuic. The bar area has very comfortable lounge seating and is a lovely place to spend time, especially in the evening. They also have a marvelous spa and indoor pool. The treatments we had were really terrific and the staff there was also exemplary! After we left the hotel and were in Madrid, my daughter realized she had left a pair of favorite shorts there. She contacted the hotel and they were prompt to communicate and asked her to describe the shorts. They did find them in the spa area, offered to launder them and mail them to her! Since she was returning to the hotel for one night the following week, she was able to pick them up then. I've lost things at a hotel before, but never have I had the item recovered, or the hotel be so diligent and over-the-top helpful. Really above and beyond! What a great boutique hotel. The location was great, with the entrance just steps from La Rambla. When entering the lobby, you are greeted by a door person and you immediately are treated to a great smell of fresh flowers. The front desk staff was great and very helpful, even offering an electrical converter for our use during the stay. It's an old hotel, so the elevators were tiny, and they require your key to go to your floor. (we learned that the hard way when I left half the family downstairs because we couldn't fit 4 people plus the luggage in one elevator) The hotel and the rooms were very clean and well kept. The rooms had high ceilings and our room had a small balcony with a door that opened. The bathrooms were great, clean, with great fixtures, and a shower with both a rain-type head as well as a high pressure wand. I would totally recommend this hotel and plan to stay again next time I am in Barcelona. read more

Hotel 1898 may not be a 5-star hotel, but it was a 5-star experience, location, and choice for a week-long vacation in Barcelona. The hotel is located along the historic and lively La Rambla pedestrian-filled street. It's next to the even more historic Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic) and just a block from the busy La Boqueria open-air market. This makes Hotel 1898 a wonderful anchor to visit nearby sites and restaurants ... plus Barcelona Metro Line 3 (Green L3) is just steps away. The Hotel gets its colonial vibe and 1898 name from its location inside the former headquarters of the General Philippines Tobacco Company built in 1881. So, why 1898? Well, that's the year Spain lost the Philippines as a colony in the Spanish-American War. Our room on the 5th floor featured a large king-size bed and windows that faced onto a noisy-at-times courtyard (so, bring earplugs if you're so inclined). The closet was ridiculously small, but the luxurious bathroom satisfied with deep-green marble decor, Etro toiletries, and huge terry-cloth robes. Our daily room rate was comparable to many lessor options in the area ... which really made Hotel 1898 reasonably good value given its prime La Rambla location and colonial-style luxury ... and a 5-star experience for an adult vacation in the heart of Barcelona. read more

I can't say enough about this hotel. Originally a tobacco company's headquarters, the building has been refurbished into an old-world, cozy retreat from what can be a busy area in Barcelona. That said, the location was perfect for us. Nearby are good local restaurants, markets, beautiful old churches, coffee shops and museums. Reception staff members are well-trained and friendly. I did not see a dedicated concierge but was able to get reservations made at the front desk. The rooftop pool is a nice haven from tourist-dom. Hard to beat the view, squawking sea gulls, and comfortable lounges while sipping a well-made pink gin. Rooms are good. One could argue on the small side but I've yet to see many large rooms in Barcelona. Hint: ask for a room on the back side overlooking the church and water. And visit that church. It's beautiful. (Did not try the breakfast. There are options afield). read more

Edit: After posting my review I was contacted by hotel management with a genuine apology for my experience, and they refunded half my stay to make it right. Dirty rundown building, staff was very unwelcoming. The AC was not working in the room, it was 26c degrees and the front desk staff said I would have to wait until the next day for maintenance to come show us how to use the AC controls. All the TV channels are in Spanish only, there is an English channel listed on the guide but the channel did not exist. No wall outlets near the bed to charge devices. The hours listed online for the pool and spa are not correct, so we were unable to use these amenities during the trip. read more

It is in a great location - you can get quiet rooms if you want - or facing the Main Street. Super clean, front desk is top!! Spa is great the pool on the spa is a must try!!! The only thing I did not like was - when we went to the pool there was lots of pool chair with towels from people that had already left... And no empty chairs. The pool staff told me that if I wanted to sit I had to clean up it myself if I wanted to sit by the pool. I mean I don't mind taking my own towel and putting it away when I'm done in the pool, but cleaning up after other people is ridiculous! read more

We asked for a quiet room and they put us in room 222 which happens to be above 3 restaurants with music open until midnight. That was the quiet room. No other rooms available, We did a prepaid trip and leaving early giving up our money because it was like sleeping on a busy New York Street. We booked this because of the spa instead if the La Meridian a Marriott property right across the street and not adjacent to 3 restaurants. The spa was not amazing enough to go without sleep. Should have stuck with Marriott. read more

We've stayed here twice over the past few years. I love the location being in the middle of all the La Rambla excitement! The rooms aren't huge but very comfortable and clean. It's very modern and great at saving energy. Most of the hotel works on censors that allow lights to turn off when no one is around. There's a coffee maker with variety of coffee and creamers/sweeteners. If you forget any of your toiletries, they do have everything you need in the room. The staff are super nice and helpful. There's a lovely spa on the bottom and a great restaurant/lounge on the roof. The food is always fresh, perfectly made and delicious. Great spot to walk around town or sit on the roof and enjoy the beautiful views. This is the only location we will ever stay in when in Barcelona. read more

where do i start? just wow. i'm a traveler who likes to be spoiled. my biggest touch points are always these things: service, details, quality, amenities, location and luxury. i got all of these things and more! the hotel is located in las ramblas... which is basically the center of it all. i was here for christmas and they had all the holiday bells and whistles. it was pure magic. the hotel is high end and visually beautiful. you will get attentive and genuinely engaged service. the staff deserves raises and promotions immediately - every last one of them! i walk into my sexy AF spanish posh room complete with dark red walls, a mini balconette, modern aesthetic, huge plush bed and high end toiletries. the linens - omg - the linens. heavy, high quality towels, luxurious sheets and a PILLOW MENU. i ordered their firmest hardest pillows and slept on their cloud-like mattress. now i'm really pissed because i need to buy a whole new bed set up at home. the service is the best i've ever experienced and this is no joke. every person who works here will show you how much they want you to experience the best stay of your life... it will ruin you for other hotels. you'll see. the rooftop bar is sexy and you'll oscillate from hearing church bells to sexy spanish dance music and mind blowing views of barcelona, including the belearic sea and sagrada família. you'll swoon. the spa! omg - i'm a spa girl and i got two back to back massages. wonderful!!! beforehand, i spent time in their sauna, steam room and bubble jetted pool. the bar. everyone is soooooo nice. as an american you have to remember the service in europe will always be much more relaxed so you might wait a bit more between rounds, but who cares. getting on the slower euro pace actually feels really good. lastly, the location. i awoke every morning by flinging my veranda door open so i could smell the city, feel it's weather. the seagulls and church bells were their own brand of bliss. barcelona is a lively, passionate, exciting, warm, friendly city filled with beautiful culture and many alleys of fun. already booking a trip back here for summer. seriously i wish i could live here. gracias H1898, te amo con todo mi coraźon!!!!! see you in the summer! don't think about it - just now and thank me later. de read more

We didn't stay here but stopped into the first floor bar because we saw the live piano player. This is exactly the kind of low-key classy place I imagine adults hang out in. There are comfy couches for cuddling with your sweetie while drinking a Negroni and listening to the classy piano player. The front desk staff has poor English skills, no one offered to help me with my heavy suitcase, room is small, no instructions on how to dial the front desk from room phone, and you actually need to keep your room card in a slit to keep the lights on. This hotel was really nice, walking in to the lobby I was impressed with the decor and friendly service! The young man at the front desk helped us with our luggage and even gave us the information on the room and pillow service! The upstairs bar and pool are just beautiful and the drinks are really good! It is a short walk from the bus drop off point from the airport. Tip #1 that the bright blue Aerobus(I believe) to Plaça Catalunya then it is a short walk down La Rambla cost approximately 6€ per person. For some reason, Spaniards get "cold" when it is in the 60's Fahrenheit and shut down all rooftop spaces after 6PM. We went in the afternoon one day and had a great experience. Good service, food and wine with comfy chairs and a great view. The burrata salad was AMAZING and is a must have! We tried to go back at 6 on another night and had a terrible experience. When I asked the front desk staff, who were ignoring me at first, why the rooftop was closed, they didn't understand what I was asking. So I repeated very slowly my question - why was the rooftop closed? Merely because I was curious why a very popular thing would be closed in a tourist area... one worker snarled and walked away and the other finally recognized what I was asking and just answered that it was a change of season. The guy didn't even try to understand - he was clearly arrogant and annoyed with english speaking visitors. He should be fired. read more

Please take me back to Barcelona ASAP, if only so I can stay in this hotel again. Hands down one of the best hotel experiences I have ever had. Not only is it conveniently located to hundreds of restaurants and shops, it is just super nice. The concierge could not have been more helpful, allowing us to check in early (and upgrading our room), holding our bags without issue, and calling taxis for us left and right. And while we waited for taxis, we were able to enjoy the gorgeous lobby of the hotel. Our room was plush and plain heavenly. After a nine hour flight, the bed was a welcome sight for a cat nap before hitting the city, and it was very comfortable. We had an excellent view from our little balcony and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the tapas bars below, including an impromptu performance by an accordian player. But when it came time to turn out the lights, the doors to the balcony were almost completely soundproof. A nice touch for weary travelers. I highly recommend Hotel 1898. read more

We stayed at Hotel 1898 for our honeymoon and loved every moment of it! We enjoyed staying here so much that we cancelled our trip to Madrid to stay an extra day in Barcelona instead! From the hotel amenities to the location, everything was excellent! The hotel is new and the rooms are very clean. The rooms aren't big but feels cozy. We chose this hotel as part of our Costco package so our daily breakfast was included. The breakfast was by far the best we had on our entire trip. The selection is extensive and service is spectacular. They even have made to order eggs! The hotel also has a beautiful rooftop bar and pool with an excellent view. There is also a small gym and an underground pool. The only mediocre experience I had here was at the spa. The massage I got was very mediocre and the prices are not cheap. The location is the best part of the hotel. The hotel is located in the heart of downtown right on Las Ramblas. It is a popular area all day long and there are many restaurants and shops nearby. Note that the prices here are quite high. As mentioned, we stayed an additional night and had to pay the regular rate for that night (not included in our package). One night was around $300-$400. Therefore, if you can get a great deal/rate, then I would recommend staying here! read more

We were trying to go to the rooftop bar, and the doorman told us we were not allowed up because it was full, which I highly doubt, as it was an off time and we had just gone to another hotel roof bar and it was fine. (Everyone go to Barcelo Raval Hotel instead- staff was much friendlier and drinks were awesome!) He judged us because we were tourists and told us to go elsewhere. I didn't stay at the hotel but i did have drinks on the rooftop a bunch of times. So my review is really for their bar. Great view of the city from a variety of angles. The music is top notch; energizing yet chill and not too loud. The seating is varied, they even have cool bed-like couches for all you lovers out their. Staff is friendly, yet not suffocating. Drinks are good, but expensive (It's a Barcelona Rooftop, all drinks are expensive). You can smoke cigarettes and cigars if you want and it's open enough to not be bothersome to others.
