I stayed here for 3 nights whole visiting Aspen for some summer hiking. First the pros: Free parking, one of the best complimentary breakfasts I've seen, walking distance to everything in town, nice hot tub and pool. Now the cons: Outdated room with a tiny bathroom, old towels, air conditioner that was loud and couldn't keep up well with the heat. Overall I'd recommend going here, the breakfast itself consisted of cereal, milk, juice, fruit, a breakfast sandwich, a muffin, and then tea. Here are the major perks to Hotel Aspen: *On the edge of the downtown shopping and dining, a quick walk *Free parking at the hotel when most other hotels charge for parking *Breakfast included (not fancy, but perfect for a quick bite before heading outdoors for the day) *Friendly front desk staff *Rates are much lower than most hotels in town (but it's Aspen so pricing is comparable to what you'd pay for a nice resort in other towns) *Small kitchenette with microwave, coffee maker, and mini refrigerator *Quiet hotel, no noise from outdoors or surrounding rooms *Quick access to running/biking trails and parks in the neighborhood The room itself was nothing fancy, even a bit outdated. I was a little scared to come here after reading the reviews online, but this place isn't all that bad. Yes it is run down, yes the walls are thin, yes it is so expensive for what you get, but this is Aspen so you're paying for location. We came for Labor Day weekend and paid close to $600 a night for a room here. I would assume this is about a $200 a night (max) hotel but again, you're paying for the location in Aspen. I really enjoyed the free breakfast and the customer service was pretty good. Overall, I didn't think the hotel was super loud. The location is absolutely perfect. You're super close to a park, and about a 5 minute walk to the main streets of downtown. read more

The Hotel Aspen is a great choice for accommodation when visiting Aspen with any kind of budget. What it lacks in terms of hotel type services - room service, restaurant reservation concierge, bellman it makes up for in the magic word - location. The Hotel Aspen is about a 5 minute walk from the Jerome Hotel and 10 minutes from the center of town and nearer 15 minutes (esp. with Ski boots on) from the Ajax Mountain ski-lifts. To the left of the Hotel about 50 feet away is the bus stop to Snowmass and Highlands. To the right of the hotel a similar distance away is the bus stop for Buttermilk. This season buses ran about every 15 minutes after 7:15 am through the day and were free of charge. Probably the easiest way of getting about. The rooms, whilst a little old fashioned are comfortable and warm. Ours had a cute stove in the corner and we never felt cold. The bathroom is modern on nearly all counts and there is a seemingly never-ending supply of hot - that's H-O-T water. Be careful ! Our room was spacious and we were lucky enough to spend a week in it and did not get bored. Housekeeping was daily, efficient and the room was always clean and tidy. Requests for additional towels were met quickly. Things to be aware of - there are no elevators so luggage will have to be carted upstairs without assistance. The shower in our room had a really bizarre temperature control which I could just about figure out - I have travelled widely in Europe, Africa, Asia and American and this mixer system for hot and cold water was the first I Have seen. Tip: Sort out shower temperature before getting in the shower - the jump from freezing to scalding can be just a slight adjustment away. All in all a great location and cozy hotel I would recommend staying at again with superb connectivity to the other 3 mountains. read more

We booked three different rooms at Hotel Aspen for a recent bachelorette party. We had a couple different room layouts but each one was quite spacious and they did their best to put us all close together and near the pool. Upon arrival, there was a delay in linens so there was no option to check in early. However, there were free bikes provided by the hotel, so we were able to jump on them for a quick ride for a beer and a bite down the road. This was AWESOME and made a great first impression. Our rooms were ready by 4pm which worked out! Each room had a mini fridge, a microwave, a bar and bar stools and lots of places to spread your stuff out and be comfortable enough to want to spend some time in the room. The bathroom was the only space that seemed a little cramped but really... who cares! The price on the lodging here seems to be a bit less than other hotels in the area, but it is also a little further away from the nightlife and shopping than others. Regardless, this entire town is walkable so the extra couple blocks really makes no difference if you are are okay to enjoy some beautiful scenery while making your way around. The pool was an awesome amenity during the day. There are comfy day beds and plenty of lounge chairs. Perfect for a summer getaway. The only sad thing here was the hot tub was colder than the pool, so we weren't able to enjoy it at night. We were probably better off going to bed anyway ;) Overall, great place to stay, super clean, spacious, friendly staff and decent pricing. These five star reviews need to tone it back a little. I'm not saying the hotel was bad, but five stars for a hotel in Aspen would land you at the St. Regis, spending no less than $600 a night at a very top-notch place. I spent two weeks here, attending the Aspen Ideas Festival for work. This means I spent two weeks in a hotel room. Repeat: Two Weeks. Hotel Room. Conclusions: Expedia's 2.5 star rating is accurate. The overall feel of the hotel is much more motel than anything else. The lobby is disconnected from the rooms, and you always walk outside to get inside, if that makes sense to you. The hallways leading to the rooms are very dark - so dark that I had trouble finding the key slot in the middle of the day. My room was a good size, but had this weird smell. I went into another room or two, same smell. Kind of a musty-aged-hard to put your finger on smell, but it never left, despite my windows being open a good amount of the time. Not a bad smell - but a smell nonetheless. The room was clean, the beds were comfortable, water pressure was decent, and linens were nice. The cleaning staff made a habit of drowning the furniture in wood polish nightly, so much so that the wooden surfaces turned into this seemingly frictionless nonsense land in which all items slid around way too much. I ended up wiping a lot of it off with a damp towel so my Mac wouldn't slide off the desk every time I opened it. The A/C is in the wall, and never really seemed to shut off (It was on auto). I had it set on 68 and it buzzed and hummed all night long. I don't think it was broken, but I never really could tell what temperature it was in the room. Never hot, just never cold enough to get the unit to shut off. There is a fridge/sink/microwave setup, but the microwave takes up 90% of the main counter. The extra sink was nice to clean a few things (mainly my protein shake bottle) and the microwave came in handy when I got the flu (funnn...) and microwaved some soup from the grocery store a few times. The pool was nice, heated to what felt like 88 or so degrees every day, so even when the temperature dropped 28 degrees the instant the sun dipped behind the mountains, it was nice to go in. The hot tub was also always on, which was a nice daily relaxation activity after working the festival all day. The hotel staff did a great job of cleaning the pool, as my time in Aspen corresponded with hilarious accuracy to the peak of their "cottonwood is falling from the sky like snow" season, so after a day of "snow" the pool looked like it had cotton balls lining the top. The hot tub was covered most of the time so much of the white allergy balls avoided it completely. The gym...what?! No gym! They do offer 20% off passes to Jean-Robert's Gym, but Hotel Aspen sadly has no workout facilities on their property. Boo. Wifi - free, but slow. The fast(er) wifi was $8.95 a night, so I stuck with the slow one. Speaking of free, the bikes out front are also free. The range of time I could use one depended on who I asked - anywhere from "about an hour" to "bring it back before the sun goes down". I ended up getting a WeCycle pass, so I only used the free ones once or twice but they definitely came in handy. Breakfast was free, included with the room. It was the same thing every day, but they did provide bagels, toast, deli meats, eggs, bacon/sausage, fruit, coffee, and juice, thus mitigating my need to seek breakfast elsewhere. Good, not amazing - more convenient than anything. The staff was nice - very nice. I got a good number of packages delivered to me while I was there, and most of the time they made their way to my room while I was working. They were happy to help with my transportation, and the shared shuttle with the Molly Gibson came in handy some mornings. I was in Aspen for two weeks. I had a roof over my head, running water, conditioned air, and I didn't pay for the room. Should I return next year, this place won't be on the top of my list, but it for what it was and what I needed it for - not bad. read more

Update from my review a few years ago: My wife and I come to Aspen every year and usually stay at Hotel Aspen. Our last visit was 2016 which was great. We had a spacious room on the second floor that was very clean. When we booked a few weeks ago, we were excited for our 2 night stay. We ended up in room 121, which was a huge disappointment. The minute we walked in, the room smelled of smoke. The carpet had runs and rips in it. The bathroom looked like that out of a Hotel 6. It just looked dated and had the feel of a $49/night hotel versus $250/night room. We were so disappointed we didn't stay our second night. We paid for an air bnb and swallowed the cost of the hotel. We were very bummed about our stay at the hotel is in a prime location, the staff is super friendly, and the pool, hot tub, and breakfast are a nice added bonus. Let me start by saying that I was extremely weary of staying here. After reading all of the seriously hit and miss reviews I was second guessing me decision; I was even apologizing to my boyfriend on the drive up just in case. Because we had accrued so many points thru Expedia, we were able to get a nice discount on one of Hotel Aspen's Deluxe rooms. I'm really wondering if the quality of the stay here is more room specific, as we experienced none of the issues with the AC or water pressure that other Yelpers did. I will also say that we stayed here off season.. and the pricing was pretty good. (I could not imagine paying $600 though, like some others!) We had a top floor corner room with a beautiful patio that had Aspens providing coverage. The room was very nice and the King Sized bed was comfortable. We didn't have to use the kitchenette, but it was nice to have a mini fridge, microwave and sink. We did use the little coffee maker, that provides Starbucks coffee. It was similar to a KCup style, single brew system. Oh the best part? Free parking and free bike rentals! With most hotels in Aspen requiring you to pay for parking, this was such a pleasant surprise. Thanks to another review, we asked about their bike rentals, and took them out the morning we were leaving. It was nice to ride to get breakfast and then around town. We even stumbled upon the John Denver Song Garden. We checked out the free breakfast, but didn't have anything since we had gone out to eat. The dining area was nice with lots of windows and beautiful views. The food looked pretty good, basically your standard continental breakfast spread. My only constructive feedback is for the hotel to update their main office where you check in. It feels very old, and doesn't match the more modern upgrades the rooms have. I suspect that before the rooms were remodeled it was moreso in line with the hotel. Also, the tubs have jets but they don't work. We called down to ask how to turn them on and were told that after remodeling, they no longer were functional. If that's the case, why not replace the tubs? This hotel is trash. And severely understaffed. Paid $800 per night for a tiny dark room. Lowlights: Super loud window unit AC, you could even hear the AC next door all night. Bed is motel quality, with one single blanket, no sheets. Opposite of cozy. Front desk consistently dropped the ball on commitments they made to clean room and change sheets while we were out, despite multiple confirmations. They are not offering room cleaning due to Covid, unless you stay 5 nights. (Which was not disclosed during booking and despite other hotels already offering it). There were never pool towels available. Pool was not cleaned. Pool is not heated, by the way. Highlights: Breakfast included (with to go picnic option) was solid, so I gave it two stars instead of one. read more

We stayed here for two nights for a girls trip and were very happy with our stay. It definitely can't be beat for the location and price. The service was great and the pool and hot tub were beautiful and well cared for. We arrived in Aspen very early, and even though it was during Covid times, they stored out multiple pieces of luggage and dropped them in our room when it was ready without us even having to ask. The rooms aren't fancy, but they do have a small kitchenette area and a nice patio. We will definitely stay here again and would recommended this hotel to anyone "trying" not to break the bank in Aspen. read more

Two stars 1 for the location which is awesome 2 for the front desk people who were very nice and a private roof level hot tub with spectacular views. This hotel is extremely overpriced (we understand it's Aspen but legit this was a ripoff), you get literally a motel 6 accommodation. There are no elevators (not sure how they comply with the American disability act), all room entrances are outside. You have to lug suitcases up flights of icy poorly lit outdoor stairs which felt dangerous. They only offer room cleaning once every 5 days due to COVID yet they don't disclose that upon booking. Room was old and it felt filthy. We had to empty our own trash and go find a dumpster to drop the trash into since no one services the rooms. The breakfast they "include" at $1200 at night was stingy, small and poor quality. We had to walk to get more towels, the room had two towels in it when we checked in (for 5 days until they "service the room again". The room temperature was constantly unbearably hot, we literally had to leave the door open in December. There is an old loud fan built into the wall. The pillow was flat hard and small. The bathtub had a loud constant leak. Poor value for what they charge. read more

Our room smelt horrible and we weren't sure why. I went to go take a shower and liquid came up from the shower drain and smelt horrible. Turns out, the liquid coming up from the shower drain was sewage. Yep, POOP! This was confirmed by the maintenance guy and front desk guy. The sewage also came up through the drain in the wet bar sink. Absolutely disgusting. I've never experienced anything like this. They also wouldn't even give us a full refund because we didn't know we had poop coming up from our drains until the third day. read more

We stayed here for two nights over Fourth of July weekend. The online photos made the hotel look much more polished and the website boasts "four-star amenities at three-star pricing." The atmosphere is actually more like a motel than a hotel. Rooms are housed in several different buildings and all the doors open up to the outside. Be prepared to carry your own bags to your room because there isn't any valet service. I think I might have seen one luggage cart, but that won't help you if you're staying on the second floor (unless I missed an elevator somewhere). Free uncovered parking is available either in the designated spots or along the street behind the property. So this is basically Aspen on a budget. The buildings are older but very clean. Our room was spacious and had a relatively comfortable king bed with a fluffy down comforter, a little sitting area, a small but functional bathroom, loads of storage space, and a kitchenette with a mini-fridge, microwave, and coffee maker. We even got plush robes. Each room comes with some kind of outdoor space, either a small patio area on the ground level or a little deck on the second level. The walls and ceilings are nice and thick, so you can't hear your neighbors at all. Even the free Wi-Fi didn't give us any grief. Our one complaint about our room was that the wall unit AC rattled a bit too loudly. Complimentary breakfast is included and it wasn't terrible. In addition to the usual continental fare you'd expect, scrambled eggs, bacon, and a rotating freshly made sweet bread like French toast or cinnamon buns are served. Tables are mostly communal and you must bus your own table. You can also walk your plate downstairs and eat out by the pool. We totally lucked out and had the pool to ourselves for about half a day before some children came to splash around. The pool area is nicely arranged with lots of comfy lounge chairs and outdoor sofas. Our one complaint about the pool was that it needed to be vacuumed. Towels were also running low but there weren't that many people using them, either, so it wasn't an issue. One amenity I think is especially cool is the free first come, first served bike rental (in four hour increments). The hotel is within easy walking and biking distance to shops and restaurants. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Pets are welcome! We had a very pleasant stay and would definitely consider this hotel for another overnight visit to Aspen. read more

My friends got us a room here for 1 night to see a band at the Belly Up. She's a wedding photographer so she spends more time than anyone I know in Aspen and this is her favorite place to stay. I can see why and know that I will be staying here when I visit again. Our room had 2 comfy beds with fluffy linens, I believe they were queen beds. Whatever size they fit 4 of us without any problems. We had a nice wet bar in the room with a small fridge we used for leftovers and brews. The TV was huge. There was a nice patio out front and a sort of enclosed porch room with 2 chairs and a table before entering the room that we enjoyed in the morning. The hot tub and heated pool was the icing on the cake, and they supplied us with warm robes that we used going back and forth. It started to snow that night so the robes and extra towels came in handy. We actually overslept and missed our wake up calls. They finally came to our room around 2, way after checkout. We thought for sure they were going to charge us for another night but they didn't & were super cool about it. They said they understood and let us sleep until they had no more rooms to clean. We stayed here in the middle of the week, during the off season. We got an excellent rate for such a nice room. For $100 we got a nice size room with a king bed, down comforter, down pillows (or at least they all felt like down), a flat screen TV, sink, microwave, safe, an iHome alarm clock where you can play your iPod, and a pleasing bathroom. The decor is nice and everything is very comforting. There is definitely nothing fancy about the outside of the hotel, but when you're looking for a nice place to sleep, that doesn't really matter. They have a pool/hot tub as well, but unfortunately I forgot my suit so I am not sure how that is. Hotel Aspen is only a few blocks from restaurants and shops and they have a shuttle to/from the Aspen airport. Definitely a great spot! read more

We're here in the off season (tail end of spring) and this is probably the nicest 2.5 star hotel ever to exist. It feels like a 3.5 star place at least! My bedroom looked like an Ikea showroom with gorgeous decorating decisions from wall paint color to sofa chairs to accent pillows to the curtains, it's a very inviting and comfortable room. Two fluffy shower robes in the closet, humidifier, iHome alarm clock where you can mount your ipod, bar with barstools, microwave, sink , track lighting above the bar, and a small but modern bathroom with the biggest shower head I've ever seen. The shower head is bigger than MY head! Wonderfully pleasant front desk staff and a very well stocked continental breakfast in a spacious but cozy lounge. Not sure at all why this place has received high reviews. Overall the experience was fine but the hotel is far from nice/ upscale. It's basically like a motel with a modern flip. Looks nice but lower end all around. Rooms are all outdoor motel style entrances. When you walk in it looks nice but then you see the old counter for the mini fridge area and the bathroom is very tiny. You cannot access the toilet without closing the door. The beds appeared to be nice, but my husband and I both slept miserable! It's an old spring mattress with run down pillows. Staff was all super friendly and very accommodating for our dog. We decided to go to Aspen for a few night and selected this place off the photos and location to downtown. We got to the hostel at 0940pm and it was closed. We found our key o. The night box and ventured to the unlit parking spaces in the back alley. I am amazed vehicle are not broken into on a nightly basis. After entering the room, we noticed the musty smell. Wow, the rim was not like the photos! There was visible drywall patch work in the bedroom and bath. Stains on the carpet and drags coming from the front door.... we could not call the front desk and complain cause no one works past 0900pm. We went to The complementary breakfast, but was told the kitchen was closed. There was a sign on the door that said go across the street to their sister property. How convenient. The breakfast was basic and the pastries were dry. After breakfast we went to check out the pool. It was small and unsecure. We were amazed at how beautiful this hotel was. We reserved a two queen hotel room which came with a mini bar, microwave, mini refrigerator and sink. I don't know how people can rate this 5 stars. Maybe it's because I stay in a lot of hotels but this truly is a 2-2.5 star place. At least from my experience. Let's start with check in. The guy their was less then helpful and seemed to be put out of his way to check us in. He didn't give us the parking pass we were suppose to have hence I got a parking ticket while our car was parked right where he sad we should park. It was an easy fix to take care of but still a needless hassle. The room. Lipstick on a pig comes to mind. Yes they made the rooms look nice for pictures but with a closer look and actually staying in the room, it's a different story. Upon entry in our 1 bedroom room. We were smacked in the face with an odd odor. It's hard to describe but it wasn't the most pleasant slightly annoying odor. The king size bed was located in a room with zero windows. So if you are like me and like to wake to natural light don't stay in one of these rooms. The bed needed to be replaced, it is past its prime. The ac made a clinking noise that was very annoying. Plus no nightstand on my side of the bed. The carpet in the entire room was in desperate need of a cleaning. Maybe the smell was coming from their. I wasn't about to put my nose on it to find out. The bathroom was small but looked nice. The added hair from other people was a touch I could have done without. They also label the hand lotion with a fee of $25 if you remove the bottle from the room. No word on what would happen if you used all the lotion. In my 20 years of staying in hotels I have never seen labels on the cost of removing toiletries. Get smaller bottles if you don't want them to have feet. My wife says the soaps were nice. To me soap is soap. Now the kitchenette. We didn't utilize it much, the fridge did keep things cold. My only problem with it was cleanliness. My daughter needed a plate to eat a pastry on so she didn't make a mess. When I went to get the plate, all of them were dirty with the previous persons food on them and wet. Every plate and bowl was dirty and wet. Unacceptable! The pool area was filthy. The chairs were covered in mildew and the pool was cold. I have been in heated pools and this was not close to warm. Especially considering the outside ambient temperature. My girls were disappointed they couldn't swim. The good about the hotel. The breakfast was one of the better included breakfast I have had at a place like this. The location is good for walking everywhere with in Aspen, hence why we left a car where we did and received a ticket. There was a very nice playground located behind the hotel for children. There were free bikes for guest although no way to accommodate children that can't ride. I have stayed at their sister property the Molly Gibson, a long time ago and will give that a try next time. Or just stay a one of the slightly more expensive properties around town. There are several options to choose from in Aspen. I could not recommend staying here. read more

NOT FOR BABIES! We stayed here recently with our 8 month old baby. I notified them ahead of time that we'd be coming and needed a crib for our room. We arrived pretty late and when we inspected the pack n play we noticed they used a regular-sized bed sheet to cover the mattress. As any parent knows, this is a major safety hazard. Everything you read tells you first and foremost that you cannot put a baby to sleep with loose bedding because they will suffocate and die. When we called down to the office to see what they could do to accommodate they pretty much told us there was nothing they could do at this time. Luckily my husband persisted and the off-site manager showed up with duct tape. We were able to duct tape the sheet tight enough to get us through the next 3 days but if my baby was younger and not able to roll over, I'm not sure it would have been good enough. There were some redeeming qualities of the hotel - nice happy hour set up, manager emailed me prior to my arrival to confirm, and they have humidifiers, but my number one expectation staying at a hotel is my safety. The fact that they are not equipped, knowledgeable or even seem to care about the safety of its youngest guests was a major upset for me. I would never stay here again nor recommend to parents looking for a hotel in Aspen. read more

Hotel Aspen refused to reimburse a night that we booked by mistake. The person at the desk made it clear that he was canceling the next week and only charging us for one night. But after the fact, they seem to forget that agreement. Don't stay there- stay at Limelight. That's where we will try next. The bed mattress was horrible. read more

I have been checked in for 1 hour and already I am wondering how can I move rooms or get out ... but given I just paid 2600 for 6 nights plus flight. I will just have to suck it and see. The 2 things I notice already are I can hear someone peeing and flushing (which is never the greatest sound in your room) and it advertised a kitchenette. Now kitchenette's to me are not a bar with a sink. They have a small stove top . They have plates, glassware and cutlery, chopping boards, pots etc This has a sink, a microwave and a fridge. So even if you wanted to microwave something you can't, or eat a salad you can't. Unless you buy a plate or bowl and silverware. This was the reason I paid the extra for a kitchenette so I could do things myself when I wanted to. Alas, my room is also right by the stairs so I expect to have the stomping of boots for the next 7 days. Why 2-stars it is in a good location, it does have a very nice man in reception (who hopefully won't be unhappy that I want to change rooms) and it has a free taxi service to and from the airport. (which is a saving of 18.00) you pay the tip but nothing else. read more

The stay at this hotel was very pleasant. The staff was very nice and friendly and the complimentary breakfast/dinner was icing on on top of the cake. Room was very nice and spacious and very clean. The warm pool and hot jacuzzis were a plus! Open until 10pm. Recommend this hotel when traveling to Aspen. read more

Great value for Aspen. Plus, you can't beat the complementary breakfast and evening beer/appetizers. Nothing like going back to your hotel after a full day of skying to a complementary Fat Tire! The staff working the complementary breakfast bar was top notch. The front desk was also very helpful and accommodating. They offered to upgrade us to a Jacuzzi room for a modest additional fee, which we are glad we took. Appliances may feel a bit dated, but they do the work. read more
