PROS Excellent location. $200 night/4th floor room was not bad for Aspen (between seasons). A/C, gas fireplace(we did not use). Sliding window for cool night air. Front staff was friendly (Karen & Matt). Room was a good size + balcony. Even though we were on the street side and a block from bus terminal, you could barely hear outside noises. Free breakfast. Decent choices. One different hot entree daily. Clean room, but very outdated. I was told that the property was sold and eventually will be renovated. Cleaning lady said they thoroughly clean the window screens on a regularly basis - impressive. CONS Small bathroom, tight door access was hard to get around. Mis-matched room furniture (a few pieces could have been removed). It would have been nice if the hotel gave us an information sheet about the hotel (garage, street parking, pool, bar, etc.) when we arrived. Tight garage, only one entrance for in/out. Make sure you use the keycode at the top street entrance of the garage. Door opens automatically when exiting. Bar was closed. The whole place is in need of paint job, carpets changed, etc. Does not look like it has been cared for in a long time. Carpet and furniture stains found. Limited street parking. Parking sux in Aspen - everywhere. Public parking garage is several blocks away. One elevator for guests and house cleaning. read more

Stayed one night in Aspen and was pleasantly surprised of our stay here at Mountain Chalet. With surrounding five star hotels like St Regis just across the street, I was very well pleased of the accommodation we had here. Love this local somewhat boutique hotel. It's old but well maintained. There's underground parking for guests. Location was exceptional. Walking distance to everything. Saturday we walked to their farmers market The guest services were all fantastic and attentive. You definitely feel like your at home and on vacation at the same time. They let us check in a lil early. Had some complimentary coffee/tea/hot cocoa. The room was spacious with a kitchenette. There's so many amenities in this hotel like a heated pool, sauna, jacuzzi tub, library, etc. and don't forget their complimentary breakfast which changes menu daily. For Sunday they offered Eggs Benedict. They also had side dishes like a variety of fruits, yogurt, oats, muesli etc. such a treat! I see why so many people here stay for a long time. Wanted to like this a whole place a lot. It's half way there, but a whole half away, too. Situated perfectly smack dab in downtown Aspen, the location is amazing. Maybe that's why the owners sold it for tens of millions over its appraised value (?). Could not sleep for four nights - room was a hot mess with bed uncomfortable, bathroom from the 1950s, and carpet from the 1970s. Breakfast was amazing as was the crew that ran it. Everyone on staff here is so friendly and helpful and the amenities are out of this world. This is a true hidden gem in Aspen. It feels like you stepped in to Europe. The hot tub is HUGE and the pool area is nice. I'm also a big fan of how comfortable the beds are and the large soaps in the shower. I feel like more hotels should be like them and save the planet from the little bottles! The free hot breakfast that comes with your stay is also oddly impressive and varies from cereal, oatmeal, fresh fruit, coffee, tea.. and my favorite breakfast of all was banana pancakes with scrambled eggs and bacon!! You literally can't beat it anywhere else. They also have a room that has a pool table and a few other games. The staff is kind. I dream of every hotel being at this standard! read more

I can easily see a tradition starting here every April. The staff and extremely beautiful family who runs this place are great! I guess you could say I came in for an off season stay, but this place, along with it's neighbor St. Regis, was a hub of activity during this time of year, breathing new life into the town of Aspen. It has all the perks you could ask for from a ski lodge that's well suited for the whole year round! sauna, hot tub, pool, massages, rooftop bar (which held NORML's largest fundraiser of the year!) and underground parking. We left the car in the basement never to return until 3 days later when we finally had to check out! The best single bed rooms are the Kings with a couch on the South side of the building. They have a wrap around balcony, huge window with a view of the luxurious St. Regis, out the front door is a view of the pool and lobby, and are located right by the elevator. Not sure what the name is but I would go so far as to ask for ROOM 320 or 420 (yes, get room 420 during the cannabis crown convention). Did I mention affordable? You can get a room for 80-120 a night! A steal for Aspen, Colorado! read more

All the other lodgers are over 60, and the faded books sitting on the shelf in my room consisted of an ancient Reader's Digest, a Garrison Keillor memoir and a book on grandparenting. But it's like the retirement home you'd WANT to retire in. Cozy rooms and attentive maids. Complimentary Sun chips and Capri Sun's when you arrive, an alarm clock I could plug my iPod into, and great water pressure in the showers. All this, and a complimentary, hot breakfast every morning. We booked the Mountain Chalet for the Snowmass Rendezvous. The location is so perfect for spending some time in Snowmass in the summer, you are just a level down from the Mall. The room was clean and ready early which is always a huge bonus after a 3.5 hour drive from Denver. The bed was comfy and water pressure in the shower was good. My favorite part was the amazing eastern view we had. I made a point to wake up early to watch the sunrise over the mountains Sunday morning. The pool and hot tub were clean and perfect for a dip after a long day in the mountains. I would absolutely book this hotel for skiing as it is ski in - ski out. read more

First and foremost I did not stay at this hotel myself. My boss was coming to town and stayed here for 3 nights. After she showed me pictures of her room, I don't know how she stayed for 3 entire nights. This place looks like it hasn't been updated since the 70's. The room just had a dingy and dirty look to it. Plus there were holes in the walls with painted-over tape "covering" them. However, she did say that the breakfast service was some of the best she's ever had. LOVE LOVE LOVE this hotel! It is located smack dab in the middle of downtown Aspen, just a block away from the AJAX resort. Aside from its location, the best part was the breakfast! The most important meal of the day is included with your stay. You can choose from the selection of cereals and pastries - there is even oatmeal in the crockpot (which I wish they would keep plugged in because it was cold both times I tried it), but I have to highly recommend the entrees coming out of the kitchen! Every day has a preset breakfast entree, and each one was super delicious! It was a breakfast burrito one day, banana pancakes the next, and eggs benedict on my last day! So yummy! Has to be the best FREE continental breakfast I've ever experienced! The rooms are no fuss but clean. There is a hot tub, and wet & dry sauna rooms. I didn't make my way to the game room, but my friends told me about the pool table, foosball table, and big screen TV. They do an amazing job at keeping the swimming pool clean and covered when it's snowing. Last but not least, the COOKIES!!! After long days of snowboarding, nothing beat having homemade cookies that you can grab from reception! These were SO GOOD! Location, location, LOCATION! This place is located in one of the most convenient locations in downtown Aspen. You can walk to the lifts within 3 minutes. It's got a vintage vibe but it's still clean and updated with all the essentials. I had a large king size bed and it was very comfortable. The guy at the front desk didn't seem to be the happiest, most friendly person in the service industry but it is a small family-owned operation. As advertised: clean rooms, cookies in the lobby, great pool, great breakfast and a friendly ambiance with staff and guests. Did I mention free underground parking? The Mountain Chalet was built in 1954. The outside is charming - very German or Swiss Alps feeling. The lobby and room we stayed in were worn around the edges but you cannot beat the price. My beau works in Aspen twice a year and his employers put him up here for several weeks at a time. After several long stays at the Mountain Chalet, I must speak up and announce it a blessed place. I honestly think it has a lot to do with its owners, the Melville family. They have set a tone that is warm and friendly. We have met many other guests who return repeatedly and they all agree: It's the best hotel in Aspen. Conversing with one of the Melville daughters over breakfast, I asked about their marketing plan, she responded: "We don't need one. We have so many repeat customers that word-of-mouth takes care of it." For sure, the breakfast clubs that form naturally every day are something special. I have met many wonderful folks that are in Aspen for a wide variety of reasons. During my last visit, I met a charming young DJ from Miami who was there to help open a nightclub and we discussed world travel over our delicious meal. Sitting across from the very fancy corporate hotel in stark contrast, the Mountain Chalet is decorated in Swiss motifs and captivating black-and-white photographs from the early days of Aspen, including the Mountain Chalet itself which was built in 1954. You can just feel the history in the hallways. I'm especially fond of Buddha the Bulldog that hangs out in front of the gym and the nightly tea and cookie service. During our last visit, we tapped into their stash of board games kept at the front desk and spent the evening in front of the lobby fire playing an embarrassing game of Scrabble, as passing guests offered word tips. It felt like home. Best of all? It's located in the heart of downtown Aspen and you can walk anywhere. The pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room are certainly nice to have around too. And, in each room, there is a blessing from the Melville family that reads, in part: "May this room and hotel be your 'second home.' May those you love be near you in thoughts and dreams, if not in body. We want to get to know you and hope that you will be comfortable and happy as if you were in your own home.....We are all travelers. From birth until death we travel between eternities. Based on the fact I would never stay here again under any circumstance, this is a 1 Star place! I'll be generous and bring it up to 2 stars for the good this place brings. The good things are: location, the breakfast is quite nice, and our rate was reasonable (we came in the off season). The bad: noise noise noise! - we heard every footstep of every nearby guest - and this place was mostly empty during our stay. We ended up changing to a room on the third floor(with nothing above it ) in an attempt to try and get some sleep. On our last day, the staff decided to start hauling boxes out of the attic right above our room at 8 AM - absolutely rude and ridiculous. All the beds are worn out and left us hurting. Cleanliness was slightly above average, but the bulk of mountain chalet is very old and worn out. read more

After giving this some thought, I decided to give this place 5 stars, for a number of reasons: 1. The staff was super friendly and laid-back; 2. Although the price was a little high for me (I try to stay for under $90 a night tops), the rate was HALF the cost of nearby hotels; 3. The room was uber cozy, with a comfortable bed and pillows, a unique welcome note, a nice flat screen t.v., and an A/C vent blowing directly onto the bed (big bonus for me); 4. When we decided to go to Aspen for a summer vacation, no one mentioned how it was still snowing and cold. So that was a bummer, but all the amenities at this adorable chalet really made our stay fun! Seriously they had everything from pool tables to a giant (full room) jacuzzi and the breakfast was made to order! One major downside, and why it didn't get 5 stars is we were given a room on the main floor which is right under the stairs. You hear people walking up and down them all night and morning, which kept us awake. But I think this is a flaw with only the room we stayed in. Our room was clearly suited to sleep 4 people, which is a big added bonus for families. read more

I brought my nieces here to spend one night and they were so impressed by the wonderful service, attentive staff and sparkling pool and hot tub. Coming from a long-time, family-run business, I appreciate a long-time, family-run business! The breakfast buffet seemed never-ending, and the fresh orange juice squeezer....my mouth just watered as I typed the words. Laid-back, comfy and really cool mountain chalet decor. You can't beat this place. We even met people who come every year and only stay at Mountain Chalet. The only small issue I had was that the room cooling unit was broken & beeping through the night, and when I unplugged it, there was not only no fan, but dead silence and I heard the early birds the next morning. A warning to those who book a room at this hotel -- read the fine print or, better yet, book someplace else. I booked a room here for the Aspen Shorts Film Festival. At the time of booking, they charged the full amount of the stay. The festival got cancelled because of the coronavirus situation. I called the hotel and was informed that, because my cancellation is within 30 days of my stay, I lose the entire amount for my stay. I travel a lot, and I've seen policies that will make you forfeit the amount of one night's stay if you cancel before 48 hours of your stay or something similar. This place takes all your money if you don't cancel within 30 days. I'll be sure to let people know to avoid this place when traveling to Aspen. read more

What a great experience/ This place is so cute - yes, it is old, but it is so well cared for that the age shows well! Great bath towels - not the typical rough white ones - but fluffy ones! My fiance and I were trying to find a decent place within a reasonable price. We found that and more at the Mountain Chalet. Our room was clean, comfortable, and the staff was terrific! We could not have asked for more. This hotel has a pool, steam room, hot tub, work out room, and it offered a free hot and cold breakfast with our meal. This place is quality! I wish I could give it 6 stars! From the moment I walked in to ask if they had rooms available I have been impressed! Every aspect of this place is great! I came off season and the pool is being repaired but that doesn't even matter because of how wonderful this place is! When you drive up you notice it's unique decorative building! Walk into the quaint little lobby and up to your room where you'll find slightly rustic, warm inviting ambience and an adorable balcony viewing either the pool or the park next door. This hotel is a block away from some amazing restaurants and a ton of high end shopping! (Gucci,Dior,& LV to name a few) this morning I woke to go to breakfast expecting your run of the mill "Continental Breakfast" instead I walked in to see a sign displaying the main course and a buffet of other items such as fresh fruit, chocolate croissants(amazing) , half grapefruits, & a fresh squeezing orange juice machine! When my eggs bacon and banana pancake came out it was splendid! Perfectly crisp/juicy bacon and the pancake was delicious! On top of all this they had the "fixings". REAL Maple syrup, honey,butter,creamer,even salsa on every table! Wow I am so happy to have found such a wonderful place. It really is a gem!! read more

We stayed her for 3 nights and we loved it! We were allowed to bring our two dogs! Awesome! Our room was beautiful and VERY clean! The pool was warm and nestled down below ground level. The breakfast was always fresh and delicious. The employees were very friendly and smiley :) the location is right in town- perfect for walking to lunch or dinner, and shopping at all the great stores. We spent a day riding bikes along the river- the hotel provides bike rental for free! So great! We will definitely stay here again- an Aspen original :) read more

This hotel is reasonably priced compared to other nearby hotels and it's in a great location, walking distance from everything. Our room and bathroom were very clean. The bathrooms seemed to be somewhat newly renovated, everything else was pretty dated but it really didnt bother me. I wasn't in Aspen to sit in my hotel room! They have a small parking garage underground which is great, and they let you use their bikes to ride around town for free. Overall it was a good place to stay and staff was friendly, I plan to return in September! read more

The only reason I didnt give this place 5 stars is because the sauna which we were longing for didnt work, and the rooms are kind of small. Other than that, talk about the best bang for your buck. They have underground garage parking, heated pool, jacuzzi and a gym that surprised me - would rival any hotel gym I have been to( a little small, but has kettle bells, cardio equipment, free weights, pull up bar, towel service! and maybe 30 other pieces of equipment :) When you enter the hotel to checkin, they have tea/coffee and fresh baked cookies waiting! that impressed me :). Be aware, second floor is ground floor. If you want safety ask for 3rd floor. read more

I don't understand how this place can have such high ratings. We unfortunately had a very bad experience here. Mostly because the room was absolutely unacceptable. The bathroom was clean, I give them that much. But the carpets in this entire establishments are so nasty that you don't want to take off your socks. We are a family with three young children but the room that we got looked like it was for a bunch of fraternity guys that don't care because they're drunk. Nasty carpet, uncovered pipes running across the ceiling, heating covers falling off, no couch (!), but oddly enough a coffee table just sitting in the middle of the room, one table with three random old chairs and all in all just ugly and dirty feeling. We had to keep our blinds down at all times because our dungeon room was lower than sidewalk level. Pleasant view. We initially planned on staying three nights, but left after one and still ended up being charged 450$ - out of ski season. read more

I visit this hotel 2-3 times a year, usually in the summer and fall. The staff is unbelievable, the hotel is dripping with history and the location is the best in Aspen. This is not the Regis, nor does it claim to be. What it is is a museum to the history of Aspen as a ski town.
