Reluctant to post about this hidden gem. Unassuming and off the beaten path but convenient to the T and great food choices 1868 has a European vibe. Friendly, helpful staff. Rooms are clean and quiet. I found the desk staff helpful with direx and recs. Very good stay. We'll be back.

Checked in this morning right on the other side of midnight. There was no availability anywhere in the city as it's college move in time and this city is really just one massive college campus. I had been looking for rooms that were NOT $800/night for several hours once I realized we would need a room (my daughters new place wasn't ready despite assurances from the owner). When I first saw the room on Hotel Tonight for...get this...and I'm not lying...$221 for the night I thought it was an error as everything else available on Saturday was $500 and up. We couldn't even find rooms near Dedham, Newton, Watertown area. I immediately booked it and honestly didn't even call to validate that the room was actually available because I didn't want to know in case it was an error. We arrived 30 minutes after booking the room and they were expecting us with keys at the ready. The lobby and the exterior were very impressive, with Hotel 1868 going for the industrial yet soft (!) look. They succeeded. The room was a bit small BUT the decor was warm considering the exposed brick look and the ceilings were high. The bed was a queen (I believe all rooms are queen size beds...no doubles). The room had a bar style counter between the bedroom and bathroom where the coffee maker sat. The bathroom was a series of light greys, wood, and metal with a European style toilet (flush buttons for low and high flush needs). The shower was open (not a fan of these as the floor gets so wet) but the pressure was good and there was great space to hold toiletries. I hate hotel showers that don't have space to sit your personal toiletries. They have reusable shampoo, conditioner, and soap (good job...because I hate those little disposables too lol). The water pressure was great. I did feel like there was a bit too much water softener in the water but that was minor. As if it couldn't get any better...check out is noon. They didn't have a little snack shop but guess what? A 24 hour CVS was across the street. There are several interesting restaurants within 2 blocks, including an Indian Restaurant that we're heading to now!

Location: Right in the heart of Harvard Square. Historic, walkable, and surrounded by great restaurants, cafés, and shops. The fall colors were unreal during my stay so wandering around the neighborhood was such a vibe. Lobby: Warm, elegant and classic New England. I loved the academic library feel with books lining the walls. Check in was a breeze and the staff were genuinely thoughtful. They walked us through all the FHR benefits and even handed us a welcome gift bag with treats. Such a nice touch. Room: A little smaller than expected, but very clean and charming with that collegiate Cambridge aesthetic. The view overlooking Harvard square was beautiful on a cloudy fall day. And the bed? One of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept on. Slept like a rock both nights. Overall this was very much a 5 star stay. Beautiful property, amazing location, and top tier service. I'd absolutely stay here again next time I'm in the Cambridge area.

You can use in restaurant or for breakfast. It has certain value and you don't get change. Gives you flexibility to save on what you choose and it is not a difficult concept! Only disappoint is there is NOT an onsite bar as shown on their website. Not a big deal, but it's permanently closed and we'd planned to visit over a drink and some snacks in the evening. An Uber ride to the Fenway area where we had a scheduled event took 15 minutes. Extremely walkable area but if you aren't keen on walking 15-20 minutes to Central Square or 25-30 minutes to Harvard Square, choosing a hotel closer to a T stop might be a better fit. Our room was ready when we arrived earlier than the hotel's usual 3pm check-in time. Spacious with two queen beds, both clean & comfortable. Large window lets in those gorgeous New England views. Spotless bathroom, strong shower pressure. Hotel guests will never want for snacks; there's a Trader Joe's across the parking lot & a small market in the lobby which also sells toiletries you may have traveled without. Friendly front desk employees added to our already excellent stay!

I was…read morethere for work and honestly wish I had extended my stay just for a little more of a rest! The shampoo, conditioner and lotions were (I think) Gilchrest and Soames -- if I have the wrong brand, know they were high quality and smelled wonderful. I did not eat at the restaurant while I was there, but colleagues of mine did and had positive things to say. I did avail myself of Door Dash a few times; very smooth ordering, as the hotel has a system set up for drop off and pick up. Was there this past winter during a particularly cold time and puh-lenty of snow; the front of the hotel was cleared and safe. A few suggestions: 1. If you can get a corner room, I HIGHLY recommend it for the light and openness. 2. The elevator is quite small -- I did fine, even with quite a large suitcase; just be aware for how many bags you bring or if you are a bit claustrophobic. 3. When I was there this past February, some construction was being done on the hotel. I was on the 5th floor and I heard nothing; the lobby, however, could be pretty noisy during the day. Again, not a reason not to stay -- and the hotel communicated well about the hours of the work. But if you plan to meet people there (for work or fun), you may wish to call in advance about the status of the construction. That aside, I definitely plan to make this my go-to hotel when I return to Boston.

We made a few requests during our stay, and everything was delivered to our room promptly. On a couple of occasions, I asked the front desk for a bottle of water when returning to the hotel, and they were always accommodating. The property features an on site bar and restaurant, as well as a fitness center. Our room was spacious, clean, and the beds were comfortable enough for a restful stay. If I had one suggestion, it would be to add a water station in the lobby. During our stay, a few days were unusually hot, and it would've been great to have easy access to cold water when coming in from the heat

If you're needing to be in Cambridge, near the universities or even Fenway, then this is a solid option. I arrived around 11pm and check-in was fast and friendly to my one night stay. Unfortunately, the Paperback Tavern had already closed and there's a lack of food options nearby. My room, a king with river view was quiet, other than what sounded like a neighbor bouncing a ball in the morning. Street noise was not an issue at all. The room was clean and everything worked as it should. I ate breakfast at the Paperback Tavern. As a Hyatt Globalist it was free but was rather simple and included eggs, choice of meat, roasted potatoes, and choice of bread and coffee or juice. The food tasted good and came out relatively quick. Checkout was easy and my bill was accurate. Prior to checkout I used the complimentary shuttle, which drops off at 4 nearby areas. Overall, I'm happy with my stay. I got a good rate of $150, which is fair. In the future I'd stay here again if I needed to be in Cambridge or headed to Fenway.

My original post was written mid-flight, so here's a clearer version with better details…read more The hotel is very nice overall, but it doesn't always feel like a true 4-star experience. I came to Boston for a work trip, and honestly, they cut corners in ways that surprised me. I've stayed at the Hyatt House before, which is only a 2-3-star property (also paid for by my employer), and they consistently offered more basic supplies. Here, I had one single bar of soap for almost two weeks. There are no microwaves in the rooms. Anytime I ordered food or had something delivered, the person couldn't bring it up--which I get for security reasons--but it became inconvenient to have to go downstairs every single time. They only offer shuttle service to the Cambridge area, which isn't really helpful. Expanding it to other nearby spots would make it a much better perk. The price swings were probably the biggest shock. Some nights were over $700, while others dropped to around $150. I understand supply and demand, but that kind of fluctuation is extreme. And for nearly $6,000 spent in less than two weeks, you'd think breakfast would be included. Instead, it's an additional charge. Covering breakfast for the entire stay wouldn't even cost them more than $250. The views are beautiful and the rooms are very clean, but there are definitely areas where the experience could be improved.

The walkway entrance is sticky and wobbly. The sitting area is probably the only nice part about it and even then, it only has pleather/bonded leather couch. The other hairs looked flattened. The reception is off to the corner by the elevator. Sometimes, the staff is talking on the phone. And the elevator scares me as it makes weird noises when it moves. It's expired for a few months. It also smells. The room is very small. The bed is supposed to be a queen but it's more like a full, and on metal rails. There's no bench or couch in the room to drop off the luggage. However, there is one shelf in a small closet. The room is also supposed to be upgraded and renovated. But it's already dated. Some of the items like ventilation does not work. There's no headboard, just wooden slates. The floor is lament, the bathroom is on par with motel quality. Also, the room is noisy at night and I have been having trouble sleeping. I don't feel rested. For all these reasons, and at $400 per day, this place is a scam.
