It was my second stay at Sheraton Commander: several years ago we stayed there with the family, and now it was 2 night business visit. I am a bit surprised by mostly negative or average reviews. I did enjoy my stay, and didn't have any real complaints. Yes, the rate was too high, and the common areas and the rooms show some age, but it is graceful property in excellent location. Staff was quite friendly, my Platinum Status was properly acknowledged, and the upgraded room was spacious enough and clean. If you need to be on the other side of Boston in Cambridge, it remains a solid choice. Minor improvements would be appreciated, but I rate it as 4.5 stars, and won't hesitate to stay there again!

    Violence

Extremely unsafe: two people (journalist Zviad Koridze and Giorgi Gakharia) were bitten in one day. Hotel security failed to protect the guests. After the incident, security removed the victim from the lobby while the aggressors continued drinking at the bar. Management still refuses to release the security camera footage.

The rooms were quite spacious and clean. There is not much lighting within the rooms and it makes it difficult to get ready at night. Staff was great and elevators were fast, just a bit small.

As others have mentioned, the Sheraton Commander's location close to Harvard Square is the best part about staying at this hotel. It is about a 5 minute walk to the heart of Harvard Square and the T, in a well populated area. My room was clean, but slightly dark, even with all the blinds open and lights on. I was on a club level, so I had access to the club lounge. The club lounge had breakfast in the mornings and heavy appetizers in the evening, as well as other snacks during the off hours. Soda, bottled water, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate was also available at all times. The continental breakfast spread was pretty impressive, with a lot of fresh fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, pastries, and hard boiled eggs. The appetizers in the evening included 2 hot items (including pasta both nights I went), crudite, cheese and crackers, and more. The wifi in my room was consistent and strong. The staff were all very accommodating and friendly, although I didn't interact with them too much. The hotel is a bit dated (slow, small elevators, dark hallways, etc...), but overall, I think the location and friendliness of the staff outweighs the hotel's negatives, and I'd recommend this hotel if you want to be in the Cambridge area.

First time staying at the Commander. It is next door to Harvard Square but we were in town visiting someone else in Cambridge. The front desk staff were welcoming and helpful. Being a platinum, I scored a nice suite upgrade here. The room was extra large, had a comfy four poster bed, had a nice bathroom with a jacuzzi like tub but suffered from some street noise. For such a small road outside, there can be some loud traffic out there. Didn't really bother me though. We arrived by car and were surprised by how small the valet lot was. They found a parking spot for us though and that's what matters. You are a short walk from lots of shops and restaurants nearby. Walking back at night is easy as they have a giant red lit sign on their roof spelling out their name. I will definitely return the next time I have business in Cambridge.

If you are taking any courses at Harvard definitely stay at this hotel. Location was absolutely perfect. Guest relations was super accommodating in this is the only Hotel I've stayed at where they asked for your needs ahead of time. I was super impressed. Being a Star woods member I was able to stay on the 6th floor which has access to food throughout the day. That part was completely amazing. The breakfast was outstanding as was the afternoon horderves and the late night snacks. I highly highly recommend staying at the club level if you're able to. My room was lacking a little bit it was very small with no sink space in the bathroom. Other than that it really was a great place and location was optimal for walking over to classes at Harvard.

Location: Right in the heart of Harvard Square. Historic, walkable, and surrounded by great restaurants, cafés, and shops. The fall colors were unreal during my stay so wandering around the neighborhood was such a vibe. Lobby: Warm, elegant and classic New England. I loved the academic library feel with books lining the walls. Check in was a breeze and the staff were genuinely thoughtful. They walked us through all the FHR benefits and even handed us a welcome gift bag with treats. Such a nice touch. Room: A little smaller than expected, but very clean and charming with that collegiate Cambridge aesthetic. The view overlooking Harvard square was beautiful on a cloudy fall day. And the bed? One of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept on. Slept like a rock both nights. Overall this was very much a 5 star stay. Beautiful property, amazing location, and top tier service. I'd absolutely stay here again next time I'm in the Cambridge area.

I'm just happy to have gotten to stay here. C booked it for our first night in Boston. I had no idea what to expect, or where in the world we were staying, but was pleasantly surprised by the digs when we got there. We do some unique traveling. Mainly in the way that we actually take trips. We leave town with only the first night stay booked and wing it from there. We do this for spontaneity, to always keep things fresh and new, and to avoid losing money in some cases because of flight delays or changed plans. This last trip was a nine day haul around the Northeast Coast. This one was great and I have lots to share, so buckle up! ;) Night one: Excellent check in. Easy valet experience as you can just leave your vehicle on the curb and they come get it later at some point. Martha Stewart's flunky designed the place, but don't hold that against them. It's quite comfy and cozy. I loved the room accommodations. The glass box overlooking the busy Cambridge City street is really cool. The windows even open so that you can get some fresh air in the room or even purge some "compromised" room air out if needed. I wanted to sleep with the window open but the city was too loud for me to endure while sleeping. Shower is nice but all of the bars are deceiving. I thought that we may have a multiple shower head experience, it was only a dual head junt.... All of the bars are just to let the things slide around. It's nice though. It's a bit quirky with only one ice machine in the basement and none on each floor. But down in the basement is a plethora of oddities and things to look at. There is a great conference room that you can rent and shit yourself in if you want. They have a good coffee maker down there too. No free breakfast. That's ok though. Come have a stay. You won't be left disappointed I believe. Staff were super courteous to us. We left something in the car after we valet, and they went and retrieved it for us with no gripes at all. Came and stay a while.... You will be pleased. '25 - 111/111

Our room was ready when we arrived earlier than the hotel's usual 3pm check-in time. Spacious with two queen beds, both clean & comfortable. Large window lets in those gorgeous New England views. If you're needing to be in Cambridge, near the universities or even Fenway, then this is a solid option. I arrived around 11pm and check-in was fast and friendly to my one night stay. Unfortunately, the Paperback Tavern had already closed and there's a lack of food options nearby. My room, a king with river view was quiet, other than what sounded like a neighbor bouncing a ball in the morning. Street noise was not an issue at all. The room was clean and everything worked as it should. I ate breakfast at the Paperback Tavern. As a Hyatt Globalist it was free but was rather simple and included eggs, choice of meat, roasted potatoes, and choice of bread and coffee or juice. The food tasted good and came out relatively quick. Checkout was easy and my bill was accurate. Prior to checkout I used the complimentary shuttle, which drops off at 4 nearby areas. Overall, I'm happy with my stay. I got a good rate of $150, which is fair. In the future I'd stay here again if I needed to be in Cambridge or headed to Fenway.

My original post was written mid-flight, so here's a clearer version with better details…read more The hotel is very nice overall, but it doesn't always feel like a true 4-star experience. I came to Boston for a work trip, and honestly, they cut corners in ways that surprised me. I've stayed at the Hyatt House before, which is only a 2-3-star property (also paid for by my employer), and they consistently offered more basic supplies. Here, I had one single bar of soap for almost two weeks. There are no microwaves in the rooms. Anytime I ordered food or had something delivered, the person couldn't bring it up--which I get for security reasons--but it became inconvenient to have to go downstairs every single time. They only offer shuttle service to the Cambridge area, which isn't really helpful. Expanding it to other nearby spots would make it a much better perk. The price swings were probably the biggest shock. Some nights were over $700, while others dropped to around $150. I understand supply and demand, but that kind of fluctuation is extreme. And for nearly $6,000 spent in less than two weeks, you'd think breakfast would be included. Instead, it's an additional charge. Covering breakfast for the entire stay wouldn't even cost them more than $250. The views are beautiful and the rooms are very clean, but there are definitely areas where the experience could be improved.
