Spacious room; exceedingly comfortable bed; quiet, even in its proximity to Harvard Square. I was there for work and honestly wish I had extended my stay just for a little more of a rest! The shampoo, conditioner and lotions were (I think) Gilchrest and Soames -- if I have the wrong brand, know they were high quality and smelled wonderful. I did not eat at the restaurant while I was there, but colleagues of mine did and had positive things to say. I did avail myself of Door Dash a few times; very smooth ordering, as the hotel has a system set up for drop off and pick up. Was there this past winter during a particularly cold time and puh-lenty of snow; the front of the hotel was cleared and safe. A few suggestions: 1. If you can get a corner room, I HIGHLY recommend it for the light and openness. 2. The elevator is quite small -- I did fine, even with quite a large suitcase; just be aware for how many bags you bring or if you are a bit claustrophobic. 3. When I was there this past February, some construction was being done on the hotel. I was on the 5th floor and I heard nothing; the lobby, however, could be pretty noisy during the day. Again, not a reason not to stay -- and the hotel communicated well about the hours of the work. But if you plan to meet people there (for work or fun), you may wish to call in advance about the status of the construction. That aside, I definitely plan to make this my go-to hotel when I return to Boston. read more

Conveniently located in Harvard Square, just a short walk from Harvard University as well as numerous restaurants and shops. I stayed here for a week and had a pleasant experience. We made a few requests during our stay, and everything was delivered to our room promptly. On a couple of occasions, I asked the front desk for a bottle of water when returning to the hotel, and they were always accommodating. The property features an on site bar and restaurant, as well as a fitness center. Our room was spacious, clean, and the beds were comfortable enough for a restful stay. If I had one suggestion, it would be to add a water station in the lobby. During our stay, a few days were unusually hot, and it would've been great to have easy access to cold water when coming in from the heat read more

A big Event: Celebration of an esteemed Scientist and his career. Lights too bright, except for the bartender, abrupt and rushing service. I got up to get a drink (which was all the way across 2 rooms in a little window) my plate has been taken. Food was still out but it was as if the staff needed to make sure the event was over as soon as possible. Nubar was ok, but again, a manager, at 11 on a Saturday Night abruptly rushed everyone out. I think this hotel relies on its proximity to Harvard. The events staff need to be retrained for sure. read more

It was my second stay at Sheraton Commander: several years ago we stayed there with the family, and now it was 2 night business visit. I am a bit surprised by mostly negative or average reviews. I did enjoy my stay, and didn't have any real complaints. Yes, the rate was too high, and the common areas and the rooms show some age, but it is graceful property in excellent location. Staff was quite friendly, my Platinum Status was properly acknowledged, and the upgraded room was spacious enough and clean. If you need to be on the other side of Boston in Cambridge, it remains a solid choice. Minor improvements would be appreciated, but I rate it as 4.5 stars, and won't hesitate to stay there again! read more

After the incident, security removed the victim from the lobby while the aggressors continued drinking at the bar. Management still refuses to release the security camera footage. read more

I was pleasantly surprised! Fantastic location, right across from a park and so close to Harvard Square. Our room was ready early- always love that. The receptionist was friendly, even provided a wine opener when we forgot one! We decided not to pay for the breakfast but did have a drink at the hotel bar, very attentive service in the beginning but ended up waiting a while for our check. Room was big and clean and perfect for what we needed. Only complaint would be how small the elevators were and how long it took for them to arrive. Id definitely stay here again read more

Wow! I would not hire even one of the front desk workers that I have met. None of them are welcoming, kind, or component in their jobs. The internet does not work in my room so they gave me the service provider's phone to call and schedule an appointment for the hotel. The TV's do not work because the antenna has been down for "a while" according to them. The hotel does not honor Bonvoy or Marriott status because they said they can choose to include it or not. The elevators are old and slow. They fit only one to two people in them with luggage. My room was lovely with a beautiful view and lots of light, but I was on a corner so it might not be the same for everyone. The restaurant staff is outstanding and they all deserve promotions for their hard work and kindness. It is a great location and close to Harvard, but the rest is a mess. I was told by someone that it is worth staying closer to Boston and commuting to Cambridge than to stay at this hotel because of the service. I thought they were kidding, but it was a very true and serious statement. Someone come and help these people please! It has to much potential to let the staff ruin this hotel. read more

Attended and stayed here for a conference. I really liked being here. The room was comfortable and clean. I got a nice king size bed which was very comfortable. The bathroom was a normal hotel size bathroom. The conference room was nice and the food provided by the hotel was great. The food was pretty healthy which I was happy about. The hotel is in a great location very close to the Charles river. The whole area near the hotel is nice. It is also close to other restaurants, and attractions in Cambridge. I would be ecstatic to stay at this hotel again, but it is a bit expensive. read more

As others have mentioned, the Sheraton Commander's location close to Harvard Square is the best part about staying at this hotel. It is about a 5 minute walk to the heart of Harvard Square and the T, in a well populated area. My room was clean, but slightly dark, even with all the blinds open and lights on. I was on a club level, so I had access to the club lounge. The club lounge had breakfast in the mornings and heavy appetizers in the evening, as well as other snacks during the off hours. Soda, bottled water, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate was also available at all times. The continental breakfast spread was pretty impressive, with a lot of fresh fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, pastries, and hard boiled eggs. The appetizers in the evening included 2 hot items (including pasta both nights I went), crudite, cheese and crackers, and more. The wifi in my room was consistent and strong. The staff were all very accommodating and friendly, although I didn't interact with them too much. The hotel is a bit dated (slow, small elevators, dark hallways, etc...), but overall, I think the location and friendliness of the staff outweighs the hotel's negatives, and I'd recommend this hotel if you want to be in the Cambridge area. read more

We awere in town for one night for Boston Calling. This hotel was perfect. The room was clean and quiet and had nice accommodations. There was no fridge but they would have brought one if we wanted. There were three of us and we got the last king room but the king bed was big enough for three if we really wanted to jam someone in there. I would come back here. There was no room service but there's a hotel downstairs that closed at 5:00 p.m. Plus we're half a mile away from so many restaurants, so that's not a big deal. Sunday in Boston has free parking on the street so that was perfect for us as well. read more

First time staying at the Commander. It is next door to Harvard Square but we were in town visiting someone else in Cambridge. The front desk staff were welcoming and helpful. Being a platinum, I scored a nice suite upgrade here. The room was extra large, had a comfy four poster bed, had a nice bathroom with a jacuzzi like tub but suffered from some street noise. For such a small road outside, there can be some loud traffic out there. Didn't really bother me though. We arrived by car and were surprised by how small the valet lot was. They found a parking spot for us though and that's what matters. You are a short walk from lots of shops and restaurants nearby. Walking back at night is easy as they have a giant red lit sign on their roof spelling out their name. I will definitely return the next time I have business in Cambridge. read more

If you are taking any courses at Harvard definitely stay at this hotel. Location was absolutely perfect. Guest relations was super accommodating in this is the only Hotel I've stayed at where they asked for your needs ahead of time. I was super impressed. Being a Star woods member I was able to stay on the 6th floor which has access to food throughout the day. That part was completely amazing. The breakfast was outstanding as was the afternoon horderves and the late night snacks. I highly highly recommend staying at the club level if you're able to. My room was lacking a little bit it was very small with no sink space in the bathroom. Other than that it really was a great place and location was optimal for walking over to classes at Harvard. read more

I stayed here three nights while on a recent business trip. The hotel is certainly an older property. The lobby nice, but the rest of the hotel shows its age. Slowest elevator on the planet! I was lucky enough to get upgraded to a suite - a nice thing, but I didn't need the extra space. The room was freezing when I arrived. I don't think the heat had been turned on! The room had nice linens. The lounge breakfast was normal, a little disappointing and they didn't have a bag to take to-go for those of us in a morning rush. I will credit the staff however. The young gentleman at the desk did everything he could to get me a room when my flight was cancelled and needed to stay an extra night. Despite a long wait list he got me that room! read more

Having lived in Boston for 3 years pretty close to Harvard, I've passed by this hotel many times but have never actually been inside. Now after staying here for the first time, I have to say this is a great place to base yourself to explore Harvard, Cambridge, and Boston. Located about a 5 minute walk from the Harvard T-station and maybe 25 minute uber from the airport, it's fairly convenient to get around. The hotel itself may look old on the outside, but the inside has been renovated and is tasteful and comfortable. The front desk staff is friendly and efficient, was able to get me checked into my room early with very little early warning (with a nice upgrade to boot). Also, the value for this hotel is excellent based on how other SPG properties were charging on the same day. The hallways and elevators are old, but about expected for a hotel like the Sheraton commander. The lounge is well-stocked and has great Hors D'orvuers at night as well as plenty of drink options. The rooms themselves are well-appointed, comfortable and will be familiar to you if you've stayed at Sheraton brands before. There's a good chance your windows will be facing someone else's windows though, so there's that. Wi-fi and cell phone reception worked well, so not a bad place to work as well. read more

Nicely renovated old hotel with beautiful Adam-Style plasterwork in lobby. Our room was spacious but not too large, and the bed was very comfortable. What they got right: no outside noise whatever--absolute quiet, two types of pillows (one for back sleepers and a softer one for side-stomach sleepers), great light in bathroom from the mirror's light frame, a subtle warm/neutral color scheme, and fast elevators. What they got wrong: practically everything on the service side--the room was not cleaned or freshened during out stay, requests for supplies (cups, coffee) were not fulfilled, and promised wake-up calls did not occur. read more

My partner is loyal to the brand, but after this experience, I'm cancelling and changing all upcoming travel plans to non-Bonvoy properties right now. There are other options. read more

I could not get by the online reservation system which was cumbersome and unintutive. I tried dealing with a reservation clerk who took 10 mins to pick up the call who once we were talking, turned out to be not the sharpest pencil in the pencil box. The Sheraton Commander is the perfect location for anyone who wants to stay by Harvard Square. There are so many great shops, restaurants and local businesses within a short walking distance. My family stayed in the one-bedroom suite. The main bedroom had two beds (queen or double, I can't remember), a dresser, a television, a desk and a lounge chair. The bedroom was connected to a separate room with a couch, chairs and television. It was perfect for my family because we had plenty of space to ourselves! The bathroom and shower area was also spacious and conducive to several girls getting ready at the same time. The customer service was excellent. The front desk was immediately responsive to any questions we had The rooms were impeccably clean as well, which I certainly appreciate. The hotel gives you the option of "Club Lounge" access, which is definitely worth the extra $20 per day! They serve an excellent breakfast every morning: breakfast sandwiches, muffins, hot oatmeal, cereal, fresh fruit and deli meats & cheese. They also serve dinner each night. I was beyond impressed with their dinner selection: fresh veggies, hummus, cheese and crackers, ravioli, arancini, chicken kabobs and cupcakes for dessert! The lounge also serves snacks, bottled water, pop, coffee and tea 24/7. It is very convenient! I used the workout room a few times. The machines were up to date and the temperature control was perfect! The hotel is connected to a restaurant called Nubar, which serves delicious flatbread pizzas for lunch. I didn't make it there for dinner, but the menu looked great. I will definitely be staying at the Sheraton Commander the next time I am in Boston! read more

It certainly has the historic vibe going on, but most aspects of the hotel are in need of a major facelift. Bathrooms are circa 1940, half the lights don't work, and I'm not even sure if the windows exist. However, the staff is incredibly friendly, and as SPG platinum the sheraton club has an average assortment of foods and drink. If this place ever went through renovations, I would stay here in a heartbeat. The location is perfect and they go out of their way to ensure that all of your needs are satisfied. I will stay here again, but have seconds thoughts the first time I open the door and get that musty smell or every time I weak into the bathroom and realize that it's a far cry from the standard SPG quality Also, their toilet paper is one-ply... Concierge lounge has great morning and evening selections and the staff is superb in their execution and amazingly friendly. Next to Harvard and a park so a very lively area but not noisy. Big windows for lots of natural light but yet, exceptional blinds for when its time to shut down for the night. Great hotel. I'll be back and you should give it a try. read more

Location, location, location. Conveniently located in the heart of Harvard activities - the Sheraton Commander is a great place to stay if you have any business with MIT or Harvard. Minutes walk from Harvard Square and a plethora of restaurants (as well as a T stop) means you're never far from sustenance or entertainment. As noted in other posts, the hotel is a bit old. Heck, we're in New England - every decent building is old. The staff at the Commander are fantastic and offer first class customer service. I was in Cambridge for a 6 day business trip and stayed at this hotel. The room rate was over $400 per night, making our 6 night stay close to $3000. The room, while clean, was not well maintained. The room was poorly lit. One of the electrical sockets was broken and exposed, posing a risk of injury. The dresser draws were off balance, and as a result, would not stay closed. There is a club upstairs which is open only to certain guests. Apparently, dropping $3000 in less than a week does not qualify for admission. We wanted to go in for a minute just to use the microwave to heat up some leftovers from the night before. There was no guests in the club. The attendant would not permit us to enter and use the microwave. The word "yes" does not appear to be in their vocabulary at this hotel. Room service is difficult to reach. The one time I attempted to place an order, I had to call the front desk, because 2 separate calls to the room service number went unanswered. read more

I stay at Boston area hotels often and this was by far one of my favorites. The staff was lovely and room was spacious. I paid a little extra for club level and so glad I did for the cheese alone :) My only suggestion to make the rooms perfect would be smart TVs so I could connect to Netflix. read more

This hotel is very clean, has a friendly staff and really close to Harvard Square. I stayed here while visiting the university and it was just a short walk away. They provide free use of their computers with access to internet and printing. They also have free Wi-Fi in the lobby. The staff is very helpful with arranging cabs, finding your way along the T or getting to tourist spots in Boston. The room was fairly spacious, with 2 full size beds (no not queen size) so it may be a little cramped if sleeping 2 to a bed. They have flat screen TVs with a fair amount of channels and offered us free bottled water upon arrival as well. Overall a very pleasant stay and will definitely come back if I'm in the area read more

A welcome improvement over the last Starwood property at which I stayed, which tried to downgrade me without admitting it. Here, I was upgraded, despite my low status. A good start to a weekend visit. The rooms are small, and the outside of the hotel is vintage, but the inside is mostly up-to-date. The attached restaurant is a bit pricey, but good and convenient. A few oddities keep me from giving it five stars though. The room thermostat didn't seem to actually be connected to the controls on the heating/cooling unit (but the unit itself worked fine). The bathroom is a bit small and dated. And the hotel apparently had 2 of 3 its elevators out of commission, although we didn't experience any significant waits. Overall, recommended. read more

Given that I live mere minutes from the Sheraton Commander, I've never stayed the night in any of their rooms, but I do pass the establishment quite frequently on my way to Harvard Square. So what am I doing writing a review of a hotel where I've never stayed? Because this hotel supplies something to me (and many neighborhood folks) that proves invaluable in the winter or in general times of laziness: an ATM and cab stand! I cannot count the number of times, in the freezing cold or when running late, that I've dashed into the lobby, greeted by smiles from the front desk, grabbed a couple of twenties from their ATM and hopped right into a waiting cab right at their curb. I'd like to think that the hotel folks don't kind my bogarting their cash machine and their taxis...heck, maybe they don't. Or maybe they just haven't caught on yet that I live right down the street and am often too frigid or late or some combination of both to walk the extra ten minutes to the square. read more

Very friendly and responsive staff. Spacious, clean rooms and a surprisingly decent gym for a small hotel. They have 2 bikes, 3 treadmills, 3 ellipticals, two weight benches, weights up to 80 pounds and a bowflex-type machine. It's walking distance to Harvard Law and Harvard Square. The hotel restaurant downstairs, Nubar, is also very good, especially for a hotel restaurant. I'd definitely recommend this place. The only minus to this hotel is that their elevators are very small and slow. read more

One of my bestest friends had her wedding reception here. All the girls were to show up around 1 ish for hair, and makeup. The man and I figured it would be silly to take two cars, so I hopped on the trained and headed up to Cambridge. You walk up to this cute little entrance, small sitting areas on both sides. I walked in the doors and it was beautiful inside. I had already been told the bridal suite is on the 4th floor, so I head over to the elevators... which were really, REALLY small. The rooms are really quite like any other hotel I have been in... except for the flat screen TVs they have in the rooms. Very nice. The bridal suite had a small office, and a big beautiful bed. The bathroom was a bit small. And where was the jacuzzi tub??? Here is the good: Everyone was very attentive. From the sales manager to the waiters to the receptionists... everyone was extremely helpful, and was very good at their job. The food was amazing. When I first arrived at the hotel, I realized I forgot my bagel on the train (stupid, I know). So after all the heat, and the traveling I was feeling a bit light headed. The MOH and I went down to the restaurant in the hotel, and ordered something to eat. I had the Pesto Chicken Sandwich with french fries. It was really yummy... a big, think piece of chicken on a focaccia bread with a pesto-mayo spread. The cocktail hour consisted of mini grilled cheese sandwiches accompanied by an espresso glass of tomato soup, stuffed mushrooms, and little pizza puffs. All very, very yummy. The menu at the reception consisted of heart shaped ravioli, salad, a roasted chicken plate, or a veggie plate. All was very hot, and very delicious. The really neat thing, is they were extremely accommodating for the unique tastes of the groom. The poor groom isn't a big fan of veggies or anything like that, so his chicken came with fries and corn. Good stuff! The not so good: From what I hear, the bar was seriously weak. All I wanted to drink was Sex on the Beach... but when the man came back with a Cosmo, I was like whaaaa?? Apparently they don't carry all the alcohol needed for the drink I wanted. Huh?! And some of our other friends were complaining as well. The prices were extremely step. I think we had 2 drinks each, and it cost close to $50 with tip. LAME! So overall, we had a blast at the wedding and couldn't be any happier for the bride and groom. But I think for the price you are paying, you can get a hotel in the same area with a higher quality. read more

We stayed there for an alumni event and very convenient to go to the event and other hot spots in Harvard square. The hotel is also a SPG member that gives you spg points. Everything was acceptable, but this isn't a fancy place or a something that I'd recommend for a weekend getaway in Boston/Cambridge. What a fine memory to reflect on this Sheraton. I spent my last night in Cambridge here, which unfortunately also consisted of the swine flu, but the hotel made me feel very comfortable. The hotel is old. Know this. I'm not sure when it was built, but you can tell with the size of the rooms and elevators that it's no Trump tower. The hallways are narrow, the elevators are excruciatingly small, and the rooms are decently sized. My mom and sister stayed here to visit me while I attended Harvard for a summer program and it was pretty expensive for them. The customer service was always great though, and we felt pretty safe walking back there each night they were there. I had walked past the Sheraton several times a day every day when I lived in the Radcliffe Quadrangle (the far dorms) during the summer and always saw they generally had business in the lobby. It's so close to campus, it's practically sitting on Harvard yard. If you are visiting your sons or daughters at Harvard and you don't have enough to stay at the Charles, I would recommend this Sheraton. read more

SPG loyal in my hotel preferences but thought the hotel was a bit small - small hallways, small elevator, etc. lighting in the rooms were by individual lamps as opposed to central switches, so it was a chore to get light and then consequently turn them all off at night.
