I absolutely LOVE Hot Waves Salon, which is located in the heart of South Philly. I live in the neighborhood so it's an easy walk from my house, but it's also close to Broad Street and public transportation if you're coming from other parts of the city. All the women who work at Hot Waves are talented and friendly - everyone feels like a friend. Laura cut my hair today and I don't think I have ever been so happy with a cut and style in my life! She took the time to understand my hair needs to make sure I had the best style for my hair type (I have long, thick, wavy hair that can be tough to style) and I could not be happier with the results! Laura is a miracle worker. Their prices are also VERY fair, especially for a salon in the city, and they are not pushy at all when it comes to add on services or product. I'm pretty happy with my blowout from Dina! Not only was it super easy to schedule fairly last minute (a couple of days before the event), but they were open on Sundays, parking right out front unmetered was a cinch AND the price was right. I have super thick, longer hair, so it wound up being the "and up", but still pretty reasonable! Also, I'll admit I left it in waaaay longer than I should've, and there were STILL some curls by the time I washed. The look wasn't as full of volume as I've gotten before elsewhere, but that's actually what I wanted, and what I had asked for...more beachy long curls than old school classic curls. I've been coming to Hot Waves for the past few years and have always been impressed with the high quality of work and great prices of this salon. Since moving to New York recently, it's been almost impossible to find a quality and welcoming hair salon that doesn't break the bank. That being said, I made a stop at Hot Waves this week when I was in town to get a much overdue cut and color to my split-end and dull hair. Like always, they did not disappoint! I used to go to a former stylist who no longer works there so I was nervous of trying a new stylist. My sister recommend Dina and she did a FABULOUS job! I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she got it spot on. Whenever I've done this at other salons, I always get a sub-par version of the picture I show. Not this time! The cut was great, the color was beautiful and ashy like I wanted, and she and everyone else working there was friendly, fun, and engaging. You can tell they're like a little family there. I came into the salon with a head of hair that was full of split ends, grown out layers and old color and walked out with a fabulous cut and new color job. I've lived in south Philly all of my life and never went to Hot waves. This week I decided to give it a try. I've been on a quest for a platinum highlights with a Carmel base. Easy right? Wrong until now!! Megan did my hair. She was beyond attentive and helpful. Megan actually listened got an idea of what I wanted and HIT IT OUT OF THE PARK!! I just got home from my hair appointment at Hot Waves and I love it! It was my first time there and I was with Gianna S. I got a haircut with some layers and side bangs but it came out awesome! Gianna was so sweet and very helpful. She was really good about asking me just how I wanted things and she also gave me good advice on how to handle my type of hair when it comes to blow drying, products, etc. Even more awesome is that I got a "new client goody bag" with some coupons that can be used the next three times I come in. I sent my wife here for her birthday, we have such a hard time with hair salons in this city. They took her at the last minute even though they were busy without a problem. When she came home her hair looked great, Linda did an excellent job with the cut and color. My wife ranted and raved about how much she loved the way she straitened her hair "perfect" with a blow dryer. The only reason for 4 stars is because my wife went in there with a certain vision and they completely talked her out of it saying it wouldn't look right and I don't know if it was because it would be more work or if they were just being honest. Dina really listened to what I wanted and even though I had never colored my hair and was nervous it turned out perfect. They have great specials and are so affordable but with great quality! They even have their own hair product line made with quinoa and coconut oil. This is the only place I go to get my hair done by Dina. I go to school in Pittsburgh and wait until I am back in Philly to get my hair done here. I am always pleased with everything I have gotten, from bangs, highlights, lowlights, full hair color, and keratin treatments. The staff is always so friendly and talented, I wouldn't trust anyone with my hair except for Dina who I go to regularly. As of right now, I have had two appointments with her, for cut, color and highlights. I absolutely loved my hair! She did a terrific job. so I moved further south in the city and after a few months I decided to look for a salon with high ratings close by and roll the dice. I found hot waves and it is no question why they have these ratings. I'm really skeptical about who I let touch my hair, but my stylist Dina I had was so sweet, and very persistent with making sure I was happy with every move she was going to make with my do. she was not judgmental on my adventurous cut, and made me feel welcome and comfortable. she assured me that every week the stylist continue to get lessons, and from time to time also go to hair shows and classes in New York. these stylists are very talented ! the salon is super affordable as well. they give you a welcome bag when its your first time stopping in with lots of goodies and coupons on other services they offer. So sorry Susie H had a bad experience at Hot Waves. I have been a client of Kathleen's for 4 years now, and she is a magician. I first came to Hot Waves with a hugely botched home dye job, and she not only fixed the mess without shaving my head, which was my next option, but trimmed off the frayed, fried ends and artfully blended the 4 color mess into one spectacular caramel with warm red highlights. I wanted to keep this color forever. I have always gotten an appointmant when I need an appointment, and if I call at the last minute to be squeezed in, Joanie, the front desk receptionist, is happy to accomodate. I have wanted 3 or 4 different styles of haircuts, and Kathleen has always been honest with me, saying, "Your hair is too straight for that cut" or "This is a difficult style to do at home.' I trust her instinct, and her insight to my hair stylist abilities (nil). So now I have a great color, and a great haircut, which I can keep looking salon styled at home. I love this place, I love the energy of the stylists and staff, I love the owner, Diane is cutting and coloring and styling and chatting with everyone else. Had my hair colored, cut and styled yesterday for $95.00. The salon offers mid-week discounts, and new stylist discounts. Parking in the neighborhood can be difficult on a Saturday, but that is the only downside to this great salon. Go!! read more
