On Thursday, July 11, I had my nails done somewhere else in West Edmonton. $55 including tip for acrylic nails with gel overlay. Not a great job; four nails started to lift by Sunday. On Monday, I returned to get the nails fixed. VERY poor job and looked almost worse than the initial work. Instead of going back to salon #1, I decided to search elsewhere. Hello, Hot Tips in Mayfield. On Thursday, July 18, I walked into Hot Tips @ 4:45. Everyone was busy and had a client. Only had to wait ten minutes. Explained the situation of my nails over the past seven days. What I wanted was for them to treat my nails as if it was a completely new fill. I, of course, would pay the regular price of a fill which is $50 based on their pamphlet. I'm Asian but not that cheap not to pay for the service that is being provided. The nail technician sat down across from me and asked what I wanted. Again, I explained the situation and how unhappy I was. I wanted a new fill. The technician said that the nails were done very poorly and that with the shape of my small nails, I should have something different so that nails would not look so wide especially since I want the length short. She suggested Ombre nails instead. I have been out of the game a long time. I do not know what Ombre nails look like. Does she have pictures for me to view to get a better idea? She came back with examples of different Ombre looks/shades. I wasn't keen on what I saw and wanted a better idea of what it would look like on my nails. (People, I am a very boring person. I don't want long nails nor do I want color or designs on them.) In Vietnamese, The technician very loudly said to her co-worker halfway across the room "Bring your customer over here so my customer can check out YOUR customer's nails. This idiot doesn't know what the hell she wants. So annoying." May I say, that I speak Vietnamese. My first reaction was to pick up my purse and tell them off, however, I really needed my nails fixed before the weekend. I kept my mouth shut and didn't react to her incredibly rude words. So we decided to do Ombre. My technician told me it was regular $65 but she will only charge me $60. (How kind....since after I came home and checked out the pamphlet that a new Ombre set was $60 and an Ombre fill was $55. Guess I got charged extra because "I didn't know what the hell I wanted". Oh. And because I was an idiot.) The nails took approximately 50 minutes. I think she did a great job. 8.5/10 rating. Let me tell you what was NOT great. The fact that she talked in Vietnamese to her co-workers constantly. In fact, all staff spoke in Vietnamese with each other loudly across the room endlessly. They spoke about the customers, their co-worker that did a crap job on someone else's nails the other day and needed help, and on and on. Let me tell all of you non-Vietnamese speaking people that go there and think these ladies are sweet. They are not. They will say something rude about you in Vietnamese while they look at your nails then look up at you and in a very sweet voice to explain to you about what they are doing to your nails. Do not be fooled by their soft voices when they are communicating with you. There are a lot of bitchy words being exchanged while they are working. LOTS. My bill was $63 including GST. I tipped a small value of $8. Could have been more if I wasn't such "an idiot". It is very unfortunate that this place doesn't care about their customers because I really did like my nails. I will NOT, however, return to spend my hard earned money here. They do not deserve it. Loss of stars due to bad mouthing your customers and co-workers. Shame on you. read more

Usually when you go to the "super cheapy" (you know the places I'm talking about) nail salons they are not the nicest looking establishments. Old, run down buildings, not the cleanest, weird smelling... but you go because for less then $50 you can get an express mani/pedi and they do a decent job. It is so nice to splurge and go to the fancy posh salon (once a year), but for the rest of the time, these places will do. Well, I can with all certainly say, this place is WAY better then most! I was really looking forward to relaxing at the end of a long day and had called ahead and booked for a regular pedicure. Started to relax but the nail lady would not stop trying to upsell me. "Shellac? It will last longer. $55 only!" No thanks, just regular color. For reference, a regular pedicure is $30 so that's $25 for a shellac upgrade. "Upgrade to a spa pedicure? Only $50." No, no thank you. "Herbal bath? Good for dead skin! Only $60!" No, no I'm good. There was another $40 upsell but I already forgot what it was. I literally talk/yell at people all day, the last thing I really want to do is converse and being yelled at to upsell. It is easily the most stressful pedicure I've ever had. She missed half my calluses and had me in and out in under 30 minutes. 30 minutes!! I would have given a one star but the extra one is for the massage chair which actually did its job. read more

Wow!! I just left this place and I have been going here for years!! I finally decided it was time to take a look at the price pamphlet to see exactly what I was getting charged for every time that I came in since the last three times that I have come it has been different prices when I've always gotten the exact same thing. My regular lady that I see is Christine and I thought that she was the absolute best!! She is super fast and efficient my nails never lifted chipped cracked anything like that. I got the regular solar basic full set that's is priced at $40. I went with the French tips which is an extra $5. Making the total price a wooping $45 (I am currently on mat leave so I'm on a tight budget and this was the best option). When I went up to the till to pay, The price for the nails was not $45 but $52!? I proceeded to pay and then after I ask Christine to show me on the pamphlet exactly what I paid for. She told me that I paid for the solar basic full set which is $40 plus the french tips which is an extra $5 and then she told me she charged me an extra $5 for her to file my nails into the shape that I wanted them which was square with rounded edge's because I don't want to scratch my baby?!?!? THEY CHARGE MONEY TO FILE YOUR NAILS?!?!? Shouldn't that already be part of the $40 that I'm paying for her to do my nails?!? I asked her where on the pamphlet it shows that they charge extra money to file your nails into the shape you want them and surprised surprised it doesn't!! As sad as it is, I've been seeing this lady for probably over five years now and I'm just realizing NOW she's probably been ripping me off this whole time!!! The first time I came here it was pretty good, I got a gel fill and a pedicure and they were average. Not great, as the tools were not sterilized and the customer service was lacking, but okay for the price. The second time, I did the same procedures and was overcharged $30 on my VISA. I called them and they apologized for the mistake, and offered to give me money off the next time I came in. I called for a third appointment, a little leery, but was put at ease by the lady who answered the phone - she reassured me that they remembered me and the $30 would be taken off my services today. I sat down, and about halfway through my pedicure one of the employees came over and let me know the girl who overcharged me wasn't working so they wouldn't be able to refund me. I mentioned that I had phoned ahead and been told it was okay, and I was completely ignored. I finished my pedicure and massage (paid for the herbal spa pedicure and got no paraffin and hardly any massage). The fill was average at best, although it took almost 2 hours. I went to pay, and shockingly the price was twice what I paid when I was overcharged. I asked the lady at the till why it was so much, and she told me its 'more for shaping, more for colour, more for time'. WTF. I asked her to point out on their price list where it said any of those things, and she couldn't. I will NEVER be coming here again and I suggest you don't either, unless you enjoy people ripping you off and using unsanitary equipment. I was with a girlfriend and we were in the Mayfield area because we both live out west. We needed our nails done (shellac for her, pedi for me) and her usual place was booked right up... I checked Yelp to see what other places were good nearby and this salon had a high rating so I suggested that we check it out. She was happy with her service and she was finished up quite quickly. Not so quick that you know it was shoddy work, but quick enough that you were like "Wow, done already!" She said she didn't know if she'd go out of her way to come back but if her regular place was booked again she'd absolutely come down this way. My pedi was absolutely fantastic, on the other hand. There are 3 different ones to choose from, ranging from $30.00 - $50.00. I chose the $40.00 one, it came with an herbal masque on my legs and a leg/foot massage. It was one of the best pedicures I have ever had, even beating out the fancy one I bought my boyfriend last month at a high end salon that cost even more (and there was no masque or moisturizing treatment with that service). I will 100% be returning when I need a pedicure, it was fantastic. I see that some of the other reviews talk about inconsistent pricing so I would caution you to clarify before your service starts but other than that don't hesitate to get your toes taken care of here. I decided to take a chance on this place because it's fairly close to my apartment. I was hesitant because there was no review on Yelp about it but figured what did I have to lose? I decided to go after work on Thursday, about 4:30pm. I was pleasantly surprised to find a fairly large and spacious place, that was pretty neat and tidy. There were a few people inside but it wasn't packed like my usual spot. I picked a nail polish and they got a chair ready for me. I got a pedicure with design, a nail take off and a bio gel overlay. Somehow they managed to accomplish a pedi and shellac mani in 45 minutes. Everything was incredibly rushed. They cut my toe so much it bled. Barely did any filing or massaging. And my toe polish could have been done by my 10 year old. I prefer short fingernails, but even I feel mine are way too short. She had said she would cut them to even them out (one had broken) but even the broken one got trimmed quite a bit. And their colours were mislabeled so it took a couple minutes to find the right one. And for all of this I paid $10-15 more than I have anywhere else. Definitely won't be back. read more

This is my favourite nail salon in Edmonton. I have had my nails done here many,many times. The staff is friendly. My nails never chip or lift and they have so many colours to choose from. I live in the north side and have not yet been able to find a nail salon that can compete with Hottips. It is worth the drive for sure. read more

Lovely spa pedicure. Went in with a group of ladies at lunch (pre-booked) and we all had a good experience. Best 'non spa' pedicure I've had. The leg massage (aka 'pummeling') was surprisingly pleasant. Manicure left much to be desired - I was asked to remove my own polish because they were busy and the gal filed my nails with a very rough file and didn't smooth before applying my polish so my nail edges were very rough and snagged. I come here about every 2 months to get my eyebrows waxed. It seems each time I get a different gal but I've always been pleased. They tidy up with tweezers and trim with scissors as well. Couldn't talk my husband into painting my toe nails so ended up over at Hot Tips Nails. I just dropped in and was quickly greeted. I told them I just wanted my toe nail polish removed and new colour put on and was treated like an important customer even though it wasn't a big 'order.' It appeared clean and well run. They have a large selection of nail polish to choose from. As with every nail salon I've ever gone to, they tried the up sell "only five dollars more" but were respectful when the answer was no. The only reason it's four stars instead of five is because they put me in the 'toe dryer' and just left me there. After about 20 minutes or do I was able to catch someone's eye and find out that yes, I could go. My lady had already moved on to another customer and had pretty much forgotten the cheapskate in the toe cooker. read more

Two pedicures 0ne traditional manicure 0ne shellac gel manicure I repeated it three times over the phone as she keep talking so fast and not listerning to what I had asked. I gave her my name and phone number as she requested. We arrived at 9:58 am for our 10;00 am appointments Monday June 15th. The owner was not prepared for us, I said we had appointments for 10:00 am, alas she did not check the appointment book and just said what do you want. I went on to say I had booked for the above treatments. She had no idea what we were in for. She wanted me to sit down and have a manicure. I said no we are having two pedicures, one manicure and one shellac. She left. After my husband had had his pedicure I said to him you are now having your manicure. Well the girls had not idea. At this time a young lady came in and said she had an appointment for 10:45 am. they sat at the second table. My husband was having his manicure and I was just having the nail polish on my toe nails finishing off. The young lady that was doing my toes said I will leave you to dry. I was not impressed. I've been here a few times now for nails & pedicures.. & they are always efficient & consistently do a good job. The space is generally quite clean & i believe they have tea available but I've never been offered any. My reasons for 3 stars is the inconsistencies in the pricing.. I've paid 3 different prices for a fill when I was getting basically the same service each time. When I added on a manicure it was cheaper than when I didn't get it but had one broken nail.. both of which cost me more than their advertised full set price though. So my advice to you would be ask at the start exactly what they are doing & what the price will be so there are no surprises because they are really good at trying to up sell services! So although I find the pricing issues annoying.. I like how they turn out so I'm going to just be sure to ask ahead & try & guarantee that I don't pay more than I expected in the end read more

The service here is by far reputable! I came to this location as a recommendation from a friend. I normally go to Diva Nails on 91 St and Ellerslie. And from my experience there where the staff aren't attentive, constantly on their cell phones talking and texting while doing my nails, it was a breath of fresh air to have come to Hot Tips Nails. The staff are friendly and so attentive making sure my service was exactly what I'm looking for. Me and my friend went for pedicures. They were very busy but accommodated us. My firend started first and after about 15 minutes they set me up in the chair next to her. Somehow I was done before her and couldn't help but notice my toe nails are very crooked and not a great paint job. I almost feel like doing it over myself I guess I am going to have to. Not sure I will return as I was incorrectly charged for a Shellac Manicure. It was my first visit here and I have been looking for somewhere close to home as my usual place is going down hill. She told me the price while prepping was $45. Now usually all places similar to basic nail salons charge $40. But I questioned it and she did not seem like she was going to change her price. Nonetheless, the manicure was decent, still do not prefer when they remove old shellac with the electric tool instead of the proper method of tin foil. I probably will not return and tell others of the mistreatment. As I picked up a brochure when leaving to see the price, it was $40. I left her $50 for a tip but I would have preferred to be told the correct price everyone else is charged, as I would still have left $50 as I like to tip well for decent service. Wow these woman are rude and ignorant. They speak in chienese the entire time while making fun of every customer. I got called a liar for my nails being done poorly and going black and that i was wearing shoes and ruined them myself. Ive been getting my nails done for over 20 years and this is the only salon that has cause my nails to go black from the polish they use. They are refilling their old bottles of polish and shake it up and making people react to the chemicals. What an unbelievably bad experience. I have gone here a few times now. The first two times I went there was good. The second to last time I went the woman was so rude! She was rushing me out and put her jacket on while she was painting my nails and got another tech to help her and left nail polish all over my cuticles. I thought I would try it again for it is close to my place. The last time I went the woman cut two of my fingers in 4 different spots, my fingers are now swollen .. I understand that she was new and we all make mistakes. She was very apologetic. I was then transferred to another woman who was very rough and not friendly. She kept digging her nails into my cuticles It hurt. And when I said owe she didn't seem to care whatsoever. I was charged $ 10.00 for my cut/swollen cuticles and $ 5.00 for "polish change". I asked her what that was about and she said for picking two different colours. I have never been charged this before and for having bloody cuticles, pretty sure I shouldn't have been charged an extra $ 15.00. It came to $ 63.00 when I always pay $ 45.00 ... didn't make sense. Today's pedicure left much to be desired. The salon was busy but not over-crowded yet they were rushing in order to get as many paying customers in and out as possible. I was in the chair for less than 30 minutes and for a pedicure that I'm paying $60 I expect much more. They do the absolute bare minimum in terms of exfoliating and massage plus a sloppy job on the polish. Prices are ridiculous for the service. They are not upfront with how much services cost. The gal doing my pedicure kept trying to sell me more services throughout my experience (once is fine, three tries is ridiculous). The salon itself didn't seem particularly clean. I noticed that they barely wiped down the pedicure station for my friend and the whole place just seemed dirty and disorderly. My 13 year old daughter made an appointment for a manicure and pedicure, and when we showed up no one got up to welcome us just told us to sit on the couch. After a couple of minutes a young lady came and got her. During her pedicure the lady did not talk to her at all but talked in her language to her co workers. ( I find this very rude). After the pedicure she asked my daughter if she was going to pay at this point my daughter told her she was also wanting a manicure. ( she booked these 2 services). She got a manicure as well but felt she had to use the same polish color. The lady also kept pushing shellac polish, which my daughter kept declining. The lady said no problem I've got you booked for 2! So I show up 10 minutes early just in case and they tell me it will be 5 minutes. Well 10 minutes pass and 2 ladies walk in, they obviously were regulars saying hello to the nail techs and whatnot. The nail tech tells her to sit down and starts on her nails right away while I'm STILL SITTING THERE WAITING. I calmly wait, didn't say anything, another 30 minutes go by with a kind lady telling me itll only be "a couple more minutes " and I STILL have not been tended too. By this point I get up and leave because I have to work soon and would not have time to wait around any longer. VERY disappointed in the service. My sister and I were in Edmonton for a family emergency. We took a break from a long day at the hospital and decided to treat ourselves to a mani/pedi. It was nice to see they accommodate walk ins and the price advertised was reasonable. Asked to pick our colours and the up selling started. We declined the shellac, we just wanted basic polish. The lady I had continued to badger me about shellac and how it lasts longer. Yes, I am aware, but it's hard on my nails and I don't want it. She continued to ask me about shellac! Sat down, had my feet in the tub and she asks again. Then asks something and her English was very poor, even though I asked her to please repeat I couldn't understand, so I declined as it was more money again. I'll say, it was by far the fastest pedi of my life. My sister was the same. When my sisters was done, her lady took her to a nail table for her mani. On the way, I heard my sister comment that she had never had such a fast pedicure and how she missed the massage and typical care given. The lady asked her where, my sister from Vancouver, told her everywhere... the lady then explained how we ordered the basic package and the massage was more. Then the lady left and came over to my lady and they started speaking in Vietnamese. Soon they all chimed in, talking loudly amongst themselves and laughing. I said; are you seriously talking about my sister and I right now??? My lady stuttered out a weak no and suddenly said something to the others and then told them to speak English only. I was so annoyed with this unprofessional behaviour that I almost got up and left. All in all a bad experience. I will not go back or recommend this place to anyone. Very rude. Very rushed. My daughter and I tried this salon for the first time today for pedicures. We opted for the herbal treatment, and were EXTREMELY impressed at the pampering our feet and legs received. Our technicians were friendly but non intrusive, allowing us to chat with each other or just enjoy the experience. The salon itself is clean, modern, air conditioned, and in excellent condition.
