Pigs On Fire - Harvesting the pigs

Let out your battle cry! This meal is not for the faint hearted and is about as manly as a BBQ can…read moreget. It only happens annually in the Garden of Unearthly Delights (February - March every year). So, if you have not tried it this year, get on down to the Garden quick smart before you miss out! Pigs on Fire originally started as a small set up a couple of years ago in the Garden. I remember when it was first set up you could smell the wafting smoke and BBQ pork throughout the whole park! It drew people to it. Like a cartoon, people floated in the air sniffing until they found the source of the hypnotic delicious smells. Now this BBQ is big and has it's own seating area and bar set up around it. It is an attraction in itself. The BBQ is set up Traditionally Dutch with large iron grills chained together in levels above a camp style fire. The fire looks to be lit with red gum for smokey flavour (but I could be wrong about the type of wood). The most entertaining part of the BBQ is watching the Chef's tilt, swirl and swing the BBQ grill over the fire to ensure that it stays lit and for even smoke distribution. Kind of like a BBQ swing. Also, I found it amusing the amount of gentlemen standing, watching and nodding at each other. As if to say, "Now that is how you BBQ!" As for the pork, well, if I could give it 10 stars I would. It is just something to be experienced. If you like smokey, salty and sweet porky flavours this is for you. I ordered the BBQ meats special. Like usual, I just want to try everything. So, out came a massive plate of meat! For me, a little girl, I was intimidated by my dinner! The only veggies on my plate was some lovely pickled onions and a piece of green cos lettuce (for colour I guess). My plate featured a sausage (with caraway, mustard seeds and beautiful seasoning), roast pork, pulled pork, seasoned crackling skin, and bread. Although this was a meat fest, it was a dreamy meat fest! Oh my, the crackling was the best I have ever tried; I could just eat a plate of it. Other options for those not wanting the mountain of meat, includes a pulled pork roll or a serving of roast pork/sausage, with smoked cauliflower, carrots and a creamy pearl barley side (kind of like a risotto). What I like about this BBQ is that it is a show as well as a meal. You can set yourself up at a table, enjoy amazing food and watch the boys cook it.

He isn't shy about getting them out for the public to enjoy either. He also loves to experiment (as do I). Mr Darcy loves inventing new flavours and toppings for his balls. Recent additions include the BallPit, with 3 pork balls squashed inside a fresh white roll with chorizo sauce and guac for $10, or the $8 Veggie with sweet potato and goats cheese topped with beetroot sauce and a mint & pea dressing. That's ball droppingly good value. I never knew I could say "ball" so many times in a review or during a food order, but as David (food truck owner) says "you can't say it without smiling." You will have a ball, or three, and then wonder how you're going to get more balls in the future. Don't worry though, Mr Darcy has you sorted.

But do not let looks nor per-conceived ideas of "vegetarian" deceive you. I like Celeste, turn up my nose at the idea of anything with quinoa in it. Normally it means bland, cardboard tasting grit and not very appetising. However, this French, dread-locked, vegetarian must be putting "special mushrooms" or something in his burgers to make them taste so flavoursome, moorish and wholesome. Served up in a wholemeal roll with lettuce, avocado, chilli sauce and plenty of special salad mix this burger will fill you up from lunch to breakfast the next day and only for $10. Arguably, I took a bite of the haloumi and mushroom burger and had severe food envy with the extra kick the chutney gave to the burger - but that's not saying much considering mine was so good! You get a whole bunch of good karma from lunching with Veggie Velo, from the sustainability of it all to the lack of little baby pigs or lambs involved. But honestly, who cares? The food is so damn good I'd sacrifice something for a bite of Mr Velo's burgers.

Was worth the ten dollar price tag, the takeaway came with caramelised onions and a fresh salad and was too tasty not to inhale all at once. I wish I could just throw all my money into getting these guys a permanent address as their mobile nature makes it hard to find them if you work weekends, the struggle is real! Dude just do it, you need this in your life. The chef is a crusader and a king amongst men.

I came across their bright yellow truck when I was on my way to try a new Burger Theory Art Burger. Usually I'm right on top of the food truck goss, but this cupcake truck had been serving in the city for a whole month and I was yet to hear about it. What is going on in the world?! So after lining up for my burger I moseyed over to check out their wares. With 5 flavours on offer I of course went for the 6 pack, grabbing one of each and 2 banana cupcakes. They were pretty and very cheap (at $16 for 6). I really wanted to love these. Like really really wanted to love these. I mean.. cupcakes... from a truck... cupcakes... But unfortunately they just didn't deliver. The icing was the first major letdown. I'm a fan of a delicious but not over the top icing (and I'm a fiend for cream cheese icing), but the flavours were all quite 'fake' tasting and while I can't be certain, there was a distinct similarity to Betty Crocker chocolate & vanilla frosting. The choc mint cupcake strongly reminded me of toothpaste - and not the yummy varieties that you sneakily enjoy while brushing your teeth. ;) The cakes themselves - better, but still not great. The flavour of the cakes was a little generic, and there just wasn't too much that stood out. With plenty of other great options in the CBD (I'm looking at you BTS http://www.yelp.com.au/biz/bts-cafe-adelaide), I just don't think this is the time for the Cupcake Truck to shine. They would make a cute present, and they are pretty, but I just don't think you'll impress a cupcake snob with a box of these.

It is in an open space in the Renaissance Arcade so there are people walking past doing their shopping and birds do fly in and out - some find this charming - I do. Others will possibly find this not to their tastes, but when the food is as good and cheap as this, who cares if a little starling has come in to try its luck? Well Raw Thirst I don't know if you're a cult but somehow you have converted me for your RAW Alkalizer juice. Who would have thunk it? Apple, Pear, Celery, Avocado, Banana and Spinach make for a damn fine refreshing juice! And if you're not convinced these guys will always have tasters available on their counter for you to try and decide whether you can handle a bit of the mean greens in your juice. Raw Thirst makes the most of the food truck revolution in a positive way. Bringing no additives, no yoghurt, no ice cream, just juice - RAW juice to the people. There are plenty of different juices & smoothies, and if you're one who can't handle drinking your veg, don't worry. There are lots which are fruit only too. They hang around the usual food truck haunts, which means you can sometimes grab a drink from here while enjoying a burger or taco from another food truck. They also do coffees, and all round ar a pretty swish 'drink' truck. Personally I'm currently a fan of their brekkie smoothie, and the alkalizer smoothie. There's something about the alkalizer being so green and supposedly healthy, just it just makes you feel good. ;)
