Well, it's happened again.
A specialized business flourishes and gets bought out by admiring beholders from the side.
In this case, Standom's butchers. Beautiful fine smallgoods products, now bought out by Barossa's.
So what do the new owners do? First they delete the beautiful Cervelaat Worst, which was one of the main reasons I would shop there, because "it wasn't popular" or, "it doesn't sell quickly enough for us" etc. Instead, they have replaced it with their "own" brand, or recipe, so the texture is totally different, it has lost its bite, and it has a chewy rubbery edge around it, so you think you are eating meat with elastic bands thrown in.
Then I go back and try the smoked salmon. Now they freeze it, - whereas they never used to. It took ages to defrost, by then my lust for it had disappeared, then it turned out to be stringy and not as soft and creamy and flavoursome as I was used to. So that is the end of that for me.
Once more I go back and get some of my favourite Kalbs Liverwurst. . . . . . all changed!! Now its more a slice-it type, rather than a soft spread. The texture is truly horrible and again, the taste seems to be dumbed down.
All up: to me Barossa's big take over is a big disappointment. Some of these age-old recipes have been handed down from generation to generation . . . but Barossa obviously knows "better."
Bummer, well, for me anyway, and I think I'm a discerning customer who can pick up when there has been unwelcome tweaking and tinkering of my favourites, to suit the profit margins. Too bad they forgot about service. read more
