I woke up this morning and realised it was a Wednesday. Also known as Hump Day. And is there a better excuse for going out to try something new for lunch than Hump Day? Well, maybe, but it was a good enough excuse for me.
Arriving at work, I emailed a friend to ask if they wanted to join me and checked the Adelaide Street Eats app. Mia, my friend, was interested and there were a few trucks out and about to choose from.
After some hearty discussion, we settled on Delectaballs, home made quality meatballs.
Lunchtime seemed to take forever to arrive, but when it finally did we headed out into the glorious Adelaide sunshine and made for Wakefield Street, today's location for the crew from Delectaballs.
There were four options to choose from and picking one to go with wasn't easy.
I ended up choosing 'The Spaniard' - pork & bacon meatballs in a salsa picante served in a hollowed out cobb roll and topped with fried chorizo.
Mia went for 'The Gringo' - beef meatballs in a Mexican sauce served on a rice salad and topped with Sour Cream.
I have to admit I was a little unsure about meatballs for lunch, I mean I love meatballs as much as the next man, but are they really a lunch food? Well, today changed my mind forever.
The meatballs were huge, closer to a cricket ball than a golf ball in size, they were tender and the flavours were outstanding. The roll, despite getting a little soggy from the salsa, was tasty and the salsa picante was a particularly good accompaniment. As a huge chorizo lover, I was also very pleased with the addition of the friend chorizo, which gave the whole thing a nice little bite.
I was kindly offered a taste of 'The Gringo' by Mia and was impressed with this one too, though despite being pretty darn tasty, I definitely preferred the pork meatballs to the beef ones found in 'The Gringo'. The rice was a nice side and would be particularly enjoyable in summer.
My roll was not easy to eat, but it was so good that I didn't mind getting my hands a little bit dirty. The meals aren't as cheap as other city options, but you won't be hungry when you're done and it was that good that you won't mind paying a bit more than you would at a dodgy fast food outlet for tasty, quality food.
If you do see the Delectaballs truck out and about, you could do a lot worse than grab yourself some delicious balls, I know I'll be going back for more! read more
