Yauatcha, why did you make me eat so much?! This was so good! This is officially my new favorite…read moreLondon restaurant (and my daughter agrees)! Everything was so delicious, and there were several other dishes I would have loved to have tried. I wish I had taken pictures of more dishes, but they all looked so good that we all just dug right in! Our server highly recommended the shrimp bean curd dish, and I am so glad she did. That's not something I would've ordered on my own, but my husband & I agreed it was our favorite dish of the night. My daughter's favorite (and my 2nd favorite) was the wagyu beef puff. I also loved everything in the steamed dim sum platter. The only thing that was mildly disappointing was the softshell crab. Softshell crab is usually one of my favorites, but it was just sort of bland. But overall the food was amazing. I just wanted to keep trying more & more things, even though I was stuffed! And the service was incredible -- really could not have been better. As a wine nerd, I have to say I don't love their wine service. You can't order a full bottle, only 500 ml or less, which means you're never presented with the bottle, so (in theory) you're never really sure you're actually getting what you ordered or getting a bottle that wasn't opened days ago. That being said, I have no doubt that the wines we were served were correct and relatively freshly opened, but I still would've appreciated proper bottle service. (On the other hand, being forced to buy only 500 ml at a time meant we could try two wines instead of sticking with just one bottle.) The ambiance was lovely -- spacious, sleek, classy, modern, with gigantic aquariums. This restaurant will be at the top of my list to revisit next time I'm in London!

Really enjoyed dinner and drinks here for my girlfriend and me. Definitely recommend it.read more

What was even more concerning was the way we were treated regarding payment. We were required to pay for our meal before our food was even served. We found this extremely unusual, especially because we paid close attention to what was happening throughout the restaurant and observed that other customers that were not African American were not being asked to pay in advance. Being singled out in this way made us feel uncomfortable and, frankly, discriminated against. We would have understood if this were a standard policy applied to everyone, but that did not appear to be the case during our visit. Customers should be treated consistently and respectfully, regardless of who they are. Unfortunately, the combination of being singled out for payment and receiving food that was cold left us with a very negative impression of Joy King Lau. Flavorful food, but poor service and an uncomfortable experience. We would not return.

The restaurant is the same with a huge dining room on the main floor and a large second floor dining room open to below. Almost every table had guests on a weekday at noon. Dim sum time means fast eating and quick table turnover. Service from the host to seating to food delivery is delivered at a fast pace by typical no nonsense Chinese restaurant staff. Even so, some dim sum such as the Cheung Fun were over steamed which made the rice noodles sticky and mushed together. Skip the Steamed Pork Spare Ribs in black bean sauce which was a sorrowful tiny dish with even tinier bits of the worst end parts of ribs, all fatty. The Steamed Chiu Chow Dumplings were good. My favorite was the Steamed Prawns, Spinach & Green Tea Dumplings. These came out freshly made and delicious. Overall, with so many dim sum options in Chinatown, Golden Phoenix needs to regain its luster.

They purposely covered up their normal menu on the board posted outside. Dishes ranged from GBP 30-47 for below quality and small portions. Plain ole inexcusable price gouging. The menu says cash only, but they absolutely take credit card. Do they really expect people to pay multiple hundred pound meals in cash? Beef chow fun was burned to a char. We had to send it back for a replacement.
