There's a rule about eating abroad. Ignore advertisements, English menus and flashy lights. Go for a wander until you find out where the locals are eating, because they actually DO know where the best grub is. Now, if you were to apply this same logic to kebab houses it wouldn't be long before you found yourself here. Show up during the day and you'll find it servicing a predominantly Eastern clientele. This is about as good an endorsement as you can get. I happen to like kebabs quite a bit so I'm a big fan of Hot Chilli. Is it as good as Zaytoon? Well, think of it like this. Zaytoon is the young poppy one with multi-million record sales, Hot Chilli is a bit more low key but maybe has greater respect from within the industry and among conaisseurs. A bit like The Script versus Brian Wilson, only unlike the script, I actually like Zaytoon.

Hot Chilli may not register immediately on the radar of Dublin's kebab epicureans, but hot damn, Hot Chilli do good kebabs. Many of you may only be familiar with Hot Chili in the context of falling out of the Village or Whelans at 3 o'clock in the morning and falling into Hot Chilli for a kebab which you immediately regret, especially when you go to your pilates class the next day. For the last year or so, I have partaken of the occasional daytime kebab (a kebab when you're not even drunk! Imagine!), and Hot Chilli do a nice one. You can get a chicken or lamb schwarma (or shish) for €6 at lunchtime, though this may have gone to €7 in recent weeks. And it is a reeaaallly nice kebab. And they also to pizzas and stuff as well, which I have tasted (it was pretty good), and the prices were very reasonable. I also like the ambiance in there during the day: big wooden tables, crazy Middle Eastern pop on the stereo, giant rotating yokes of meat. What could be better. And most of Hot Chilli's lunchtime clientele is composed of people from north Africa and the Middle East, so if they are eating there, the proprietors must be doing something right. So if you take the attitude of "Atkin's be damned, I'm eating a kebab", make Hot Chilli the scene of the collapse of your willpower. And if you really want to throw the hammer after the hatchet, order the taco fries on the side. Lard in a bowl, it does not get much better.

The best kebab I have eaten in Dublin was bought here. Top marks. They're a revelation.

During our research before we left we saw a video talking about Bunsen. Just seeing the high quality of the ingredients made it one of our must try stops in Dublin. As we do when traveling, we start and end the day eating throughout the day. We popped into Bunsen to finally try the legendary burger around 4:30 pm. Because we were there at such an odd hour, we were the only people there. When you visit Ireland, the pub culture is real and most pubs start to get quite busy around 5:30 pm. Since Bunsen isn't a pub and wasn't located in a particularly touristy area , it didn't surprise me they were empty at that time of day. What stuck out the most at first was the super friendly service right from the door. We were sat at a small banquet of tables against the wall and checked out the menu from QR code link on the table. We were there for their original burger so that is what we ordered. No sides and water to drink. I couldn't be filling up too much yet. It was pretty early after all and we had a lot of places to stop yet. The menu isn't huge. They focus on doing one thing well and keep it at that. I like a restaurant that doesn't try to be everything. Our burger came out within 10 min and it was juicy, hot and fresh. Presented beautifully wrapped. We shared this one burger because, we knew we had lots of food to eat later. Immediately after eating the last bite I wanted to order another. It was really that good. Such perfection! This will be the burger I compare all others in Ireland to.
