I have an allergy so asked if they could make it without an ingredient - they made mine separately without the ingredient I can't eat AND made it with all ingredients for my husband. We both enjoyed our dishes - serving sizes were plentiful and tasted great! The staff were soooo nice - which is getting harder and harder to find in NoVa these days. Note: They do not serve pollo a la brasa ("Peruvian charcoal chicken") here and will provide table service for dine-in patrons. There isn't much dine-in space here so I'd recommend coming only with a small group. Interestingly there is somewhat of a homey ambiance here, with a large Peruvian flag in the window, a retro arcade machine in the dining area (not sure if it was working or not) posters on the wall advertising local Latin American concerts, and Spanish language ballads playing on the speakers. *Lomo Saltado - As advertised this is sauteed beef over fries, with steamed white rice. The beef here is somewhat tough, the marinade is basically just salty without the depth that you'll find in the same dish at comparable Peruvian places. Lomo saltado is one of my favorite Latin American dishes due to its delicious Chinese influence, and I was somewhat disappointed here. *Yucca Con Chicharron - The pork belly here isn't as crispy as similar restaurants, and the only thing I appreciated was that it tasted warm and fresh. I would say the same thing about the side of yucca fries served in this dish. I'm going to have to give this restaurant a suboptimal rating because this was one of the least spectacular Peruvian restaurants I've visited despite plenty of competition here, plus prices at Hot & Cold are not great compared to the competition. I'm happy I came here once to support a local spot, and it wasn't "disgusting", but I wouldn't make this a regular occurrence. read more

Terrible experience I placed an order on Saturday afternoon I cannot explain how disappointed I was overall. The lady who took my order was really disrespectful and had no customer service or cares about what customer service is, she just wanted to get your order fast and money. She brought my food to the parking lot and when I asked her if utensils were in the bag, she replied upset " I never asked for utensils and I should have asked before " Food was by far the worst food ever, it wasn't fresh, it smell like it if it was cook on really old oil and the portion was so small for an average meal. Don't let the uninventive name or its hole in the wall location fool you, this little mom/pop cafe is overflowing with authenticity from the range of food items down to the decor as though one touched down in Lima and wandered into a sidewalk cafe to tune in to watch the World Cup. There is an old school arcade machine from the 80s, a large Peruvian flag perpendicular to a large screen TV showing football (soccer) games and other indigenous programs, and a countertop with an a small selection of ice cream, and flavored syrups, a case of baked goods including Peruvian empanadas, and fountain drinks including horchata and passion fruit juice. The menu offers a wide variety of classics from Lomo Saltado and ceviche as well as jalea (mixed fried seafood), Papa a la Huancaina (boiled potatoes in a spicy cream sauce), and Cau Cau (tripe stew). I was also delighted to see that they even have some options for arroz chaufa (the Peruvian take on Chinese fried rice). The lunch specials are a steal coming in just under $10 which include soup and a drink, and the quality of the dishes are representative of native preparations but perhaps not necessarily the best of the best (having sampled some excellent renditions elsewhere, I'm a little biased, but I can attest they are nonetheless delicious and definitely hit the spot if you are hankering for Peruvian food or need a primer as a first-timer). The Lomo Saltado has that fresh off the griddle aftertaste with tender cuts of beef, well cooked onions/tomatoes, and french fries that have soaked up the zesty sauce whereas the ceviche is well textured with an adequate hit of spice and acid. The fillings for the empanadas have a nice spice profile, although the flour shell is a bit atypical with a sweet pie crust like texture topped with a little powdered sugar reminiscent of a Monte Cristo sandwich. The chaufa has great flavor but the rice could be crisped up a bit more on the wok. While I have yet to encounter tender steak (in the way one wants a ribeye or filet mignon to be), this was the most succulent, flavorful and least dried out of the bunch. In fact, I was happy that there were pieces of medium rare in the mix. It's a little heavy on the red onion and scarce with the peppers, but I wasn't complaining when I destroyed that dish. We came in here twice. Both times for the chicken soup. The first time was great and the soup was delicious according to my girlfriend. The name of the place is a bit confusing. The decor was perfect for a divey hole in the wall place. The place had an old fashioned video game in there (maybe Pacman), and the decor definitely made you feel like you were in an authentic Peruvian style diner. We came back the second time because my girlfriend liked the soup and this time I ordered food as well. I'm usually up to trying new foods all the time. I got en empanada and a Tamal Peruano. There were distinct differences from the flavors that I'm used to from perhaps some other latino style restaurants. No bad, just different. The food was presented well and the service was nice. I thought the empanada was a bit dry however. I had that nice shiny glaze on the outside and I was hoping for some of that delicious crust like apple pie but it was not. Insert sad face emoji here. It crumbled away. The chicken inside was flavorful and good. The tamal however I didn't like the flavor too much. It may be made in exactly the right way but I personally did not like the seasoning on the chicken on the inside. Now after all that, it may be a coincidence but i didn't feel good for 2 days after this meal. It could have been something I had from somewhere else so I'm not saying it was something I ate here. For me, this place wins hands down. I have tried multiple lomo saltado versions from various establishments and let me tell you this is the juiciest, best portion to dollar amount ratio, and packed with flavor. They know my order when I call, they know my name when I walk in, and they treat me like family. I like to eat in places where I can feel comfortable. I always feel welcome here. Like any establishment you should give it another chance if you've had one bad visit. I can tell you as a restaurant manager I've had days where I've been alerted to a situation where food wasn't cooked properly or service wasn't right and I rectified the issues. This mom-and-pop hole-in-the-wall has been at this nestled-in location for eight years. I read the reviews so I had to give it a try (I want to support local businesses as much as I can and try new restaurants). I asked the waitress what their best dish is and she recommended the Lomo Saltado. Essentially it is thinly cut but extremely tender beef with onions, tomatoes and spices on a bed of fries, a side of white rice and two pieces of garlic bread. I thought, "Why the bread? There are already fries and rice." The meal was so delicious and juicy that I used the bread slices as they were intended: to sop up the yumminess left over on the plate. Ok, here is the deal... we were in the mood for Peruvian food and like always we search the places with good reviews, in this case Yelp reviews are saying Hot & Cold have 4 stars, so here we go; place ok, food ok, service ok, now let's get to the point why 1 star: they charged us 18% gratuity, seriously? If they have those practices to charge without being written in the menu we wouldn't have dinner there. I'm not against tipping, in matter fact we are pretty generous when we tip, but do not use my money without my permission. Some places charge gratuity once the table has more than 5 guests, but seriously, it was only 3 including myself. My bf and I ordered take out from here for lunch yesterday. I got the gyro and he got the lomo saltado. We also got a side of sweet potato fries. The fries were soggy by the time we broke into them, but the taste was still pretty good. The gyro was tasty and the lomo saltado was delicious. The juices from the lomo saltado collected at the bottom of the container and the fries soaked them up, which made it all even better.
