I spent one night here after a slow roll ride and couldn't be happier. Very clean facility, helpful staff, reasonable accommodations at a very reasonable price. I can see how it can get very hot and uncomfotable in the summer if the rooms are full with only a few fans. Twin bed was comfy but don't expect to get your best nights sleep. I really enjoyed the creative, artsy vibe the hostel had. A handful of cool things to do/stay busy inside if the weather doesn't hold up. Plenty of books, movies, ping pong and live music now and then. Located in the theater district with plenty to do within walking or biking distance. A great starting point if you're looking to explore Buffalo. I didn't use the kitchen but it was fully equipped. Coffee and oatmeal is free but you are more than capable to make your own meals. My stay at Hostel Buffalo-Niagara rocked! The location downtown is perfect and it's easy to get almost anywhere. We brought our bikes to get around and were able to store them in the basement. The atmosphere is artsy and cool, loved all the posters and art around the building. The lounge spots are comfy and inviting. The kitchen is fully-equipped, and there's plenty of space to cook or store food. Overall great stay. read more

Spent a couple of nights here when I was in the process of relocating to Buffalo. Staff was great, the room was awesome, except for being inexplicably hot the first night. I needed a refund because I wasn't going to be spending a full 5 nights there, and it was taken care of with a minimum of hassle! It's located centrally in Buffalo, so if you are without a car it's great. If you do have a car it's a little more tricky, as if you want to save money, you have to move your car from the meters to paid parking before 8AM, and then back to the meters at 5PM. Other than that, I very much enjoyed my stay here, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive night in Buffalo. read more

This is THE BEST HOSTEL I have ever stayed at! I had hitched a ride with some friends to Niagara Falls/Toronto. We crossed the border back into the U.S. fairly late and I found that the hostel had emailed and called me, wondering if I was still showing up, since their check-in time was until 10:30. Though not explicitly encouraged or advertised, they do do late check-ins! I got in around 10:45pm, found a beautiful, huge, clean room with really high quality linens (as far as hostels go anyway). I took a shower (with a dedicated changing area!) and slept like a baby until 8am the next morning. In-room lockers are present, but they're only big enough for your essentials. Breakfast is coffee, tea and oatmeal (make your own). Tons of lounge space, pingpong, board games, a movie room, laundry and book exchanges everywhere including right next to my bed! Great wifi. Beautifully decorated. I was so surprised when the receptionist told me this hostel had been in business for 15 years! It looks more like 5 or less due to how nice and new everything looked. Although I was only there for a night, I kind of regret not staying another night just to meet travelers, use the hostel's amenities and explore Buffalo. Unfortunately I had already booked a non-refundable Greyhound ticket out of Buffalo. The bus station is about a 15 min walk (with 2 Tim Horton's along the way--how much better can life get?!). I needed a place to stay in Buffalo while I was waiting to get my apartment. Hostel Buffalo-Niagara was the perfect place! Very affordable and located right in Downtown, and very near a rail stop. Being new to the city, safety was my primary concern. When I first got there, front door had to be unlocked to get in. Nobody can just walk in. I liked that. Guest are given key cards to get in to their rooms, and the elevator or stairs. I liked the layer of security. Makes me feel safe from the cruel world outside! ;-) I chose an all-female room and had the chance to room with great roommates from all over the US and other countries. The room was clean, big and airy, with fans during hot days and A/C turned on during nights. The bunk beds were comfortable and the mattresses was firm. The bathrooms were always clean. The walls all over the building were decorated with interesting posters, pictures and murals. The kitchen was big and had all what you need. You can easily cook for a party in that kitchen! Plus free unlimited coffee, tea, and oatmeal. And there's always free stuff lying around - bread, cookies, cheese, even a full meal! There are two common areas where you can hang out, read a book, play board games, watch movies (they have great titles!) and play ping-pong. They have laundry and printing services as well. But what really made my stay unforgettable was the staff. They were so friendly, accommodating and helpful! Jonathan went the extra mile to give me tips about the city, told me about the history and interesting facts of certain places. And when it was time for me to go, he even called for my cab. So my best friend and I had never stayed in a hostel before and for this being my first experience, it just made me want to travel from city to city checking out all of the hostels, because I had such a great time at the Hostel Buffalo-Niagara. This hostel is a great value for Buffalo; it seems like there aren't very many options for budget travellers in Buffalo, so this hostel was very much appreciated. I slept in the male dorm and I found the bottom bunk to be a little too restrictive in terms of vertical space, but it wasn't a big deal. My favourite things about the hostel were the Netflix TV in the basement and the great atmosphere in the common areas! You get free oatmeal in the kitchen, but if you don't feel like doing any work or fancy something more substantial, you can also get a discount at a nearby cafe by showing your room key! read more

The most amazing thing about this hostel is the location. Very close to most things you would want to do in Buffalo. I loved that they had an art gallery attached, I thought it was a great way to bring in the community to a space that otherwise would only be for visitors. Once I entered the hostel, I immediately fell in love with the aesthetic and ambience of the place. The staff was extremely hospitable and gave me the best recommendation for buffalo wings, of course a local speciality. The room I was staying in had an awesome high ceiling and was clean. Only stayed here one night to visit Niagara Falls. Only $25 a night! Clean place, not many people were there which was great as I didn't have to wait to use the shower! Friendly staff. Great location in the theatre district and next to a rail stop. As an added bonus, the people in my room were nice and friendly. There was a street fair going on the night I was there--definitely bring an eye patch and mp3 player when staying at hostels! Added bonus was the guy working the front desk said the bar next door was offering free beer, and sure enough he was right! I took the cheap airport express bus from the airport to the hostel which is a great bargain. However, the bus to Niagara Falls was an hour late! Coming back from Niagara Falls, I was lucky my bus was only 20 minutes late but other folks were waiting an hour for their bus! But a day pass is only $4. So cheap for a days worth of public transit. Also there's a post office nearby if you need to ship stuff. read more

When I go back to Buffalo, I will never stay at a hotel. Only this place! I had the most awesome time here. I stayed there for two nights. The amenities were pretty basic, but that was expected. I met a lot of great people here. The staff were all really nice and even hung around after their shifts to talk to the guests. It was such a great experience! I really only needed a bed for the night and a place to shower, so there was no way to disappoint me. But regardless of that, it was a cool experience. I didn't have any complaints (except not knowing about it sooner since they didn't have availability for my second night). Fair warning though, since it's on Main St., if you're in a bed close to the windows you might have trouble sleeping due to the sound of the Metro cars running all night. This wasn't a problem for me, but it might be for others. Other than that, the location is great, the price is unbeatable, and the staff were pretty helpful. read more

I was stranded overnight in Buffalo and having had good experiences in the past with Hostel Buffalo and wanting to avoid further harassment at the bus station, I thought it would be a good idea to see about a day pass until 4:30, when I could return home anyway. When your desk staff refused to even allow me to pay for a bed I wouldn't even use for the night, I was very surprised, disappointed, and disgusted. She was rather condescending and treated me like some weirdo for even bringing it up. read more

I cannot BELIEVE the value I got for my money and was shocked that it wasn't more full. Truly a bargain,and I say get in before it gets more expensive! They are so super nice here and totally accommodating. John told me about the events in the area and recommended some cool spots to check out. This hostel is definitely a major reason why I had such a fun,comfortable time in Buffalo. Cheap and comfortable hostel in the middle of the deserted (eerily, I might add) Main street Buffalo. Everything is clean and well organized with simple check-in and very helpful staff. Everyone is welcoming and friendly and it is definitely worth the $25 a night. The building itself is secure, with pin codes to enter the structure itself and a key card access to the rooms. When I was there it was a frigid February evening and the place was warm without being hot. The kitchen is orderly and has cups/mugs/glasses and other utensils for all your simple culinary needs. There is even a lounge area for people to meet and converse. Everyone I met was really easygoing and we even went for a drink! A very well-run establishment, it's definitely somewhere I'd stay again if I was looking for a place to rest for a short night or if I was travelling through with a group of friends. This place was great! I have to say that it was very clean, the staff were quite friendly and the lobby, rooms, kitchen & lounge were well kept. I wish there was more energy use consciousness. e.g.---the over-powerful bathroom lights were often left on all night with only a dysfunctional motion sensor that of course, people didn't use. Quick, easy energy reduction: remove a bulb or two from any of the several light fixtures to lessen the brightness. It doesn't need to be so bright in there. Same with the large room (10+ beds?) it has just one light switch for this double large room. If the lights were divide into 2 switches, a lot of time only one would be used--especially as it gets just before bedtime. They have composting! Bike borrowing--(I don't think there was a charge). It would be great to have a urinal in the men's room 3rd floor, but there was construction--not sure what will be placed there so it was just the one toilet for the entire floor (for men). If I'm in need of a place to stay in Buffalo again, I'll go back for sure! Thanks guys! read more

-loud rooms with street noise -rude staff -flimsy uncomfortable mattresses -cheap price but not a good value I am a seasoned traveler who has stayed at countless hotels and hostels in many countries. I have never experienced such rude and downright hostile treatment in a hostel. After calling in advance to announce our arrival, we were left out in the cold for at least 5 minutes before the guy finally came to the door. It was freezing cold (around 20 degrees), windy, and actually snowing. Instead of apologizing, the worker says "I'm the only one working tonight". I was upset but decided to just avoid him. My friend and I were in an almost empty dorm room. I soon realized our beds were right next to a loud tram line that was running all night. I moved the flimsy mattress across the room and slept on the other side. The next morning after returning from the bathroom I was immediately confronted by the same worker from the previous night. He began yelling at me that I can't use 2 mattresses, first thing in the morning after I just woke up. After checking out, I was going to ask if breakfast was included but the guy just disappeared. I asked another guest who directed us to a lounge upstairs filled with other guests where we had leftover pizza and played chess. Suddenly the worker barged in and tells me that we have to leave immediately because it's a half hour after checkout. I told him normally it is not a problem even to wake up a half hour after checkout. He said he didn't like my attitude since we arrived, and that we were trespassing and had to leave immediately. I have never been treated like this before in years of travel. I do not drink, was not rowdy or in a big group or doing anything even remotely illegal or against the rules. I could never recommend this hostel to anyone. If the manager is reading this we stayed Saturday, 3/22. read more

What can I say? I haven't stayed in too many hostels in my life, but I'm sure that few are as pleasant as Hostel Buffalo Niagara. The first thing you notice is the welcoming reception area, with cool posters from floor to ceiling, collected over years of Buffalo art and cultural events, intermixed with handy suggestions for things to do and goings on about town. My friend and I didn't need any of that since I used to live in Buffalo, I already know my way around and had a long list of things I wanted to do, but it was nice to see that a guest could find out about a lot of cool, alternative events right there. The hostel walls are decorated with images taken from Buffalo's past and colorful wall art and the entire place is absolutely spotless. Our room on the third floor, in the back, was very comfortable, had really high ceilings and two huge windows, giving us great light and air circulation. The bunk beds were comfortable as far as bunk beds go and the bathrooms were also clean and spacious. There is a nice & comfy and funky lounge on the second floor, right next to an equally great and well equipped kitchen, though we didn't do any cooking. The lounge is chock-a-block with well-selected literature, comfy sofas and friendly travelers. Just last week a ping-pong table was installed in the basement and the hostel also offers bike-rentals for getting around what is an extremely bike-able city. The hostel is located in the heart of Buffalo's theater district and within easy walking distance of downtown Buffalo attractions as well as Allentown, a historic neighborhood and foodie/bar scene destination. With the notable exception of SpOt coffee, a Buffalo institution, avoid the nearby Chippewa St nightlife strip at all costs. If you need to go further afield, the hostel is well situated for access to both the NFTA Metro train that goes up main street and a host of busses going all over. The Greyhound bus station is also about a ten minute walk away, and the Exchange St. Amtrak station is about the same. Buffalo is a truly special town, with tons of history, art, culture and blue-collar personality. For budget travelers or those that just like hostel culture, the Hostel Buffalo-Niagara is a fantastic home base for exploring everything this underrated city, and region have to offer. read more

Among the better hostels I've been to. It's a recently renovated building in a fun little neighborhood in downtown Buffalo. It's within walking distance to some cool shops and restos as well. I was worried about having to park my car on the street, but the hostel is 2 doors down from a police station, so I guess that is a good thing. Only stayed here one night but the staff and facilities were much better than your average hostel. The rooms and bathrooms were very clean and the bunk beds were made of wood, which is a nice change from those crappy squeaky beds a lot of places use. I'd recommend this place for sure. read more

Whats great is that its only $25/night and really accommodating when my booking through hostelworld messed up and ended up on the wrong dates. There weren't too many people in the all girls room when I stayed and those that were there were very friendly. This Hostel does everything right so I give it 5 stars, but it comes with a huge caution! To begin, the facilities are well kept and clean. Besides the dorms, there is a nice sized kitchen space, dining area, several lounges, laundry facilities (with detergent and dryer sheets for only $5!), an entertainment area, ping pong table and the place is adorned with artwork. The staff was as helpful as could be! It's a great location with plenty to do within easy walking distance. A couple of things to be noted: there is no air conditioning in the building. I visited on a day that the temp was around 85 during the day, and the dorm was comfortable enough at night with just a fan running. For men: ask for the 3rd floor. It will be warmer, but the bathroom on that floor offers both a urinal and stall with 2 shower units. The 2nd floor has only 1 stall and 1 shower unit (although you can walk up to the 3rd floor if you want). Parking is street parking, but in what seems to be a very safe neighborhood with a police station on the same block. Heads up that Apple maps took me to the right place to park, but from that street you can't see the hostel. You have to walk down an alleyway to get to the entrance on the other side of the street. The quality of your visit will depend on who you end up rooming with. I was there on a Saturday night and had one older guy that appeared to be very ill and some bros that closed down the bars before stumbling in and lighting up the place with their phone flashlights. People went in and out of the room all night which was both loud and blinding. Bring a sleep mask and your earbuds if you don't want to be awoken all night long. At least, from my experience. Perhaps weekdays are different. Overall A+ for the hostel and its employees. Some of my fellow travelers get a D-. read more

These guys were very welcoming to me and one of the nicest Hostels I have ever stayed with. The staff were easy to make friends with and very informative on what was going on in the city. The Hostel is in a great location, being right on the main street and right by the free train that goes up and down main street. The hostel itself is clean and well kept. The beds are comfy and clean and the bathrooms are well kept, and the atmosphere is nice. It has game rooms, wifi, a full kitchen you can cook your food in and free bike rentals! I'll start by saying I've never stayed in a hostel before this and I'm not a sharing a room with random strangers sort of guy by nature. I decided to stay here the first night I arrived in town as I was arriving quite late and didn't feel like paying full hotel prices for a room I would barely use. The booking over the phone was a pleasure. I was delayed at the border and called to let them know and they provided a back up plan in case the desk closed. I arrived just before they closed and check in was smooth. The place wasn't a five-star hotel but it was much neater than I expected and very homey. After I dropped my stuff in my room I asked the worker at the desk for suggestions for a convenience store and a pub. She was quick to give me everything I needed. When I got back from sampling the local libations I went to my bed (in an 8 guy dorm) and slept like a baby. No rude wakeups in the middle of the night. I was impressed. I got up early to get in line for the shower. No crazy line to be seen, got my business done without delay. By that time I went to the lounge area to plan my day. Someone had made coffee so I plopped on a comfy couch and had a sip. I was really impressed. It was only like $25 compared to the $150 the hotel was asking. I want to give these people more of my money. I'll definitely be trying to get a private room for my own comfort next time, but I'd even recommend the dorms. The other great thing is that it's right around the corner from the bus terminal if you're a bus traveller like me. read more

I stayed here the night of Superstorm Sandy. October 29, 2012. I was headed from Toronto to International Falls, Minnesota; flying out from Buffalo Airport the next day. It was pouring rain in sheets on the bus ride down from Toronto as I wondered if I made a mistake by leaving at a time like that, but I was running out of money, I didn't have another $100 to stay in Toronto, so I didn't have much choice. Got to downtown Buffalo bus station in the pouring rain and had to RUN to the train that went up Main Street, got off at Hostel Buffalo (667 Main) SOAKING wet. However, I was thrilled to be inside, dry, and weathered out the storm in a private room in what felt like a soundproof building. I fell asleep early and woke up the next morning well-rested. My interaction with the staff was minimal since I basically checked in, went right to bed, woke up, and left. Rushed to the airport for a 10 am flight only to wait for 6-8 hours of delays. This hostel is the way to go, but just remember to make sure you arrive by 10pm as they do not have a night staff (you can call ahead, and they will give you an electronic entry code to enter - but make sure you call in advance and let them know this). Upon leaving, the woman behind the desk was great - she told me where the bus to the airport departed from, where to get a bite to eat, etc...I'll be staying here again for sure! read more
