I had the mala sichuan ramen, which is a newer offering. Our server described it as spicy with a floral taste. She was spot on! I really liked the flavor-it is definitely spicy. However, mine bordered on being so salty it wasn't edible (for me). But the flavors were so good. My sister got the tonkatsu, mom the seafood ramen. Both looked good but we did note mine had the best veggies, including lotus root. The pork is roasted, which I prefer. We finished with one mochi each and sesame red bean paste balls. Again, fried really well and the rice flour has a nice chewy texture but I like more bean paste. My sister liked these as-is, not liking red bean paste as much. We had to come and see what this restaurant had to offer. We were visiting friends on campus and one of my friends mentioned a quint ramen shop so of course we could not pass it up! We had to come and check Hoshi Ramen out! It was very cute walking in and seeing lots of different japanese decorations with Scooby-Doo episode playing behind the bar. Immediately felt comfortable as a nerd coming here to get some food. We actually reserved a table ahead of time for the 5 of us and they were excited to accommodate. We sat down and the server started service with waters and our appetizers. We ordered the Chashu fries, the chicken karaage and the seaweed salad. Everything was fresh and tasty! I have been craving ramen and since I've seen bao bun tacos on TikTok, I've been dying to try those too!! I am not disappointed!! Everything about this visit was spot on! The service was spot on! The teriyaki chicken dish was not overly sweet and sticky as most Americanized Asian food is. The ramen seemed very authentic and hit the spot for me. I'm not sure but I think they make their mochi. I've had the preordered stuff before and didn't really care for it but I loved everything about this mochi. Even my son enjoyed it and he didn't like it the first time we tried it either. Word of the wise is, not all mochi is created equally! Please revisit this if you've tried it elsewhere and didn't like it. The only thing is... for this food experience I had to accept that I was going to upset my body as there were no options for gluten free. Obviously bao bun is not GF and that's what I wanted to try. Ramen could be served with a rice noodle option but they don't have it. You could order one of their rice dishes but it's sure to have soy sauce that isn't gluten free, and the meat was coated and fried in something not GF. Moral of the story is if you have celiacs just stay away. Gluten intolerance? Weigh your risks verse's benefits and deal with your decision. Lastly, the vegetarian options are not fully vegetarian... like Worcestershire sauce. So if you're vegan... skip on this one. You have no options here. Delicious! We followed this with an appetizer of Tofu Bao and Chashu Bao. Their Bao is a work of art visually and amazingly perfect tasting. There are not a lot of choices for ramen in Dayton. I think this is the only one that is supposed to specialize in ramen. I was disappointed on my visit though. The ramen looks and smells decent, but when I took the 1st sip of broth for the tonkotsu ramen, I was really surprised. The broth is very thin and watery, and has no richness and is not salty at all. This is a big problem because it can making the noodles bad too. Without a good broth, you don't really have the heartiness of the ramen anymore and it loses a lot of flavor. The ramen noodles were ok, and a little on the harder side - more chewy instead of springy. Pork in here was average, One thing I noticed is that it was uneven, because most of the pieces were good, but some pieces were really bland. The best part of the ramen was the egg, which was gooey inside, and the flavor was good. Another surprising part of the dish was the menma - in a bad way. The bamboo was crispy and crunchy, and had an unusual watery taste, when it should be softer and saltier. I've never seen menma in ramen that tasted like this. Both were delicious. I like the tofu better. For my meal I ordered the Tonkotsu. (I always spelled and pronounced it Tonkatsu). The half boiled eggs and the pork that was in it was very tasty and amazing. I'm glad I ordered extra eggs. However the ramen noodles itself was tasteless. Because I liked the egg, broth and pork so much I wanted an order of just that to go but they couldn't prepare it that way and I had to purchase the entire Tonkotsu again so I did. The food came quickly and well presented. The broth body.... just lacked flavor. It was very flat in flavor. Not even a bit of umami to it. There was little difference in broth flavor between his bowl and mine. Wish they offered some chilli, soy sauce or some sort of flavoring condiments on the table. The environment seemed cool if you wanted to sit down, very modern. There was a puzzle on one table, some anime posters. It felt very relaxed. I did pickup my Tonkostu ramen, so this may affect my review, but I'm not sure how the broth flavoring would be different at home versus in a bowl. This ramen is lacking a lot of flavor. It feels like it's mostly water. I want to like it, but it's not a thick, rich, creamy tonkostu broth. I prefer Speakeasy Ramen in Springfield. The pork was very good and I enjoyed the egg, but would have preferred a whole egg to a half. The noodles were fine, I enjoyed the green onions. I would have preferred a bit more flavoring on the bamboo shoots, but they did have a nice texture. As for service, since I picked up my order, it seemed to be fine. The guy who got my order was very friendly and I had no issue with the short interaction. I will be going back to try some other dishes since they have quite an extensive menu.
