Fun but the smells were a bit overwhelming, and even after washing our hands, our hands still smelled very fragranced after we left, which was irritating for some of us.

It's a place where kids in marching bands performing in Texas heat turn the sound up. Where girls on the high schools dance squads kick in a traditional line dance. The kids and volunteers who play/work at Rhodes Stadium earn all the stars. You have to watch a Katy HS game to really see the magic though. Fans holding on to their season tickets like they were Packers fans. If the concessions should only match the rivalries this place would be great. But I'm pretty sure they serve the cheapest forms of hotdogs anyone could find and so I strongly urge you to stick to bottled water and eat well before the game. If you like food, go to a Strake home game! It may be small ball but the concessions serve real food.

My friend and I had planned a fun night, and he was so excited to go as it was my first time at a haunted house. He arrived and was on the phone with me, simply trying to find my car so he could come get me. Before he even made it to my car door, he was aggressively approached and accused of trying to break into cars. Instead of asking questions or verifying anything, the main security guy immediately escalated the situation. He refused to even speak with me when I tried to explain, told my friend he had to leave or he'd take him to jail, and claimed he had a "witness" when no one ever came over or saw what actually happened. He had just bought our tickets online, but they kicked us out without a refund, without any respect, and without listening. It was humiliating and infuriating to see someone instantly stereotyped and treated like a criminal for doing absolutely nothing wrong. What was supposed to be a fun night turned into a painful reminder of how casually people still weaponize assumptions against Black men. We recently went with our Sunday school class and it was the most magnificent experience. We had an amazing tour guide Rebeca Heredia. She is fluent in English and Spanish and gives tours in either language or both. Highly recommend requesting her for your visit. The museum is free of cost and I recommend, if you can, to give an love offering to your guide and or museum as well. I learned so much and I felt that I need to go again to soak up more and more of the details. Will be back!

For a second year con Space City put on a great show. Sure there were problems, the main one being…read morethat the venue was just too small for the number of people. But as a convention goer, that's a better problem to have than for the place to be empty! If you don't know what a convention is, check out Sandra I.'s post. But if you are already part of the culture and just want to know how this one compares to others... keep reading. The "fame level" of the celebs was a little bellow other conventions of similar stature, but quite good for a second year convention. It was also good to see a lot of guests willing to interact with the patrons rather than only appear to sell their autographs and their 1 hour Q&As. Having Robert Picardo as an MC throughout the entire event was a nice touch. The dealers room was nice, with a good variety of things for sale and for the most part had a good traffic flow with only a few bottlenecks near the doors and where some of the celebs were. Artist Ally was a little lackluster with less artists than one would expect for a con of this size. Part of that though was due to putting some artists in the dealers room where they were somewhat overshadowed and possibly missed. Very average in this regard. I never made my way to the gaming area. So I don't have much to say about that. The 24 hour video game room was nice as many cons have tried to do similar things, but this was one of the most friendly ones I had seen. To me the big take away was that the con had a mock up of the Enterprise D bridge, Holodeck Arch, Tardis exterior, Tardis Interior and Stargate. Yeah, I've been to quite a few cons, but never one that had all of those things at one time. Of course putting them behind a big blue curtain meant that a bunch of people probably missed out on them. Logistics also could have been better... but assuming the con moves to a bigger venue in the future, that should help!

Yelp hooked up what ended up being a 3 day pass. Shout out to Yelp! Seemed like the hotel was cramming a table where ever it could to maximize usable space. nearly every hallway, the foyer and even booking out the restaurant for RPG Board games. And the parking. Let me tell you the parking and how horrifying it was especially in the heat. one of the two days I went I went ahead and made my own parking spot on the grass between the hotel and the Carrillon Centre next door. Great gathering of Sci-Fi fans to have a Halloween of sorts in August. NOTE: Some of the best people watching you will ever do in Houston. You know... dress up as your favorite characters. I swear the cleavage was rampant there and it is awesome. So many creative costumes out there with full in character acting. I saw a girl on stilts dressed up as some kind of demon from a board game..IDK. Makes you think what if that girl in the Sailor Moon tight leather with knee highs is the same nerdy girl that works in accounting at work? Comic art was a huge presence at this event. Great artistry, independent comic series, custom comic character sketches. From the small pencil drawings to huge oil on canvas I was thoroughly impressed with the gallery. B list celebrities are all over the place. The character actors from cult films like Star Trek, Stargate (and the series), Dr. Who...yes Power Rangers to. I struck up a conversation with the "Pink Ranger" while waiting for a friend of mine to finish talking to TC Carson from Living Single. I was all like, "the real Pink Ranger is Amy Jo Johnson!" and we both laughed. I saw Tim Russ (Tuvok from Star Trek Voyager) who looked worn the hell out by Hollywood. Robert Picardo who was also selling other actors autographs form his binder. I generally couldn't bring myself to spend $40 or more on pictures and autographs from character actors. I get it. Perhaps I am just used to the old school "just appreciate your fans" attitude. Took a few pictures with props. Occulars from Frankenstein Monster, Props from Firefly including Kaylee's sawed off shotgun and Jayne's Revolver. Posed in front of the Stargate and a replica of the Tardis. Good times and all were complementary. The owner just wanted us to appreciate the series as much as he did. Maybe next year I will dress up. If only to get in the mood and cut loose. And, maybe I will cave and get autographs.
