BLUF: Downtown gem, if you have a dog, bring them, they'll love it and so will you. Great drink specials, coffee, and food truck on site. As a downtown dog owner, I really can't say enough good things about this place. My apartment has a small fenced in dog "park" but it pales in comparison to the offering here at Hops and Hounds. They have a big and small dog area, and during peak hours there's a park attendant monitoring dog behaviors and keeping the area clean and safe. All of them are very attentive. Don't have a dog? Still a great place to hang out and have a drink. They have several beers on draft, with rotating taps, all of the in-demand can options, and a full bar. They also recently added a coffee and pizza venue. Love the coffee, but I haven't tried the pizza yet so I can speak to its quality. Weekly drink specials, of note are Margarita Mondays and Tap it Tuesday. The Monday offering is savings on their delicious margaritas, and the Tuesday offering is savings on any of their draft beers. Things worth knowing ahead of time: The dog park isn't free, you have to download an app, and make an account even for a day pass. The day pass is $5, but there's a monthly pass for $25 that is worth it if you live in the area. Children under 18 aren't allowed in the dog park, for their safety and the dogs, which I appreciate. On weekends there's a staffed bar that you can order drinks from without leaving the enclosed dog area. No on-site parking, but there's a paid lot adjacent to their property, and earlier in the day you can parallel park on the street for free. (Street parking is always free, but there's rarely open spots during peak hours) They have a food truck on site, Benjie's Munch Truck is a mainstay, and sometimes they have a second food truck. read more

What a cute place! I came on a road trip with my dog to San Antonio. I had a long list of dog friendly places for us to check out. I was between going here and the place next door but I liked the music better here better. I did a lap around then sat at the bar. I was quickly asked what I would like but I requested the menu. The menu does not have proxies but when I asked they said cocktails are $9-11, well drinks $6.50. I got the regal beagle. I'd be willing to bet the price of the drink that there wasn't more than 1/2 drop of alcohol in it lol. But it was SWELTERING so I didn't really need to be tipsy anyway. They let me put my pup on th chair next to me which was next to a "big ass fan" that did a great job of moving air. I went over to benji's food truck and got a patty melt and upgraded for ~$3 to fries. The fries were good and piping hot. Patty melt was just ok. Luckily the $18 meal was huge and I got a to go box to eat the rest later. I then took my dog over to the dog park where he played his heart out with some new friends. By this time it had cooled down a lot and there was plenty of water around. They also have a Fi collar station and you can check rankings for your dog but it's based on number of visits, not steps. Worst customer service I've received was at this establishment, sadly they did NOT respect personal space or have any manners for how to approach a customer with dogs. I have come with no issues before, but this time a young girl was guarding the dog park entry gate which I thought was weird since you can't access it without the membership anyway. I was walking in with 2 large dogs that can be hard for me to handle when they get excited, and this employee just walked right up to me completely disrespecting my dogs personal space, didn't even ask if she can walk up to us. She marches up to my dog who was not happy with her approaching me with her negative attitude, telling me she needed to see my phone, my dog barked and jumped between us because her protective instinct kicked in - we came from an abusive household so she learned to step in between to speak up for my safety. My dog didn't do anything wrong, but the girl immediately gave me an ugly look and tone and told us WE weren't welcome because my dog made her uncomfortable. My dog was not at fault for this, and her behavior wasn't anything out of the ordinary for a dog who protects their owner. Employees clearly have no basic respect, no boundaries for personal space, severely lacking in proper training and ZERO customer service skills. She made it a point to make me as if I am never welcome back so I requested a refund for my membership. Again, reluctantly done with attitude and just asked to put my name and number in her phone with zero problem solving skills or resolution for turning away a customer who has been coming with no issues prior to dealing with this. Still waiting on and expecting a refund or any communication and nothing at all for days. Huge failure on management's part there. As someone who comes from years of customer service and hospitality, this is unacceptable and an embarrassment on their part. I would not recommend this place to anyone who wants to actually enjoy a relaxing and stress free experience with their pups. read more

So cute and fun! We actually don't have a dog, but if you want to see adorable dogs and grab some good drinks and food, this place is amazing. They have big, comfortable outdoor couches, long bench areas on the wall across from the bar, a lot of picnic tables and high top picnic tables. There's a full bar and the food is from the food truck. We just got the spinach dip grilled cheese as a snack, which was really great. Grabbed coffee afterwards at Grounds and Hounds which is right in front. Ample, comfortable outdoor seating and a lot of it is in the shade. They had a DJ on a Saturday afternoon. I hate leaving negative reviews, but this experience didn't sit right with me. When I ordered two cans of soda this past Saturday 4/18, the bartender had already pre-selected a 25% tip on the screen after I tapped my card and before handing the device back to me to sign. Thankfully I always review my bill before signing, so I was able to remove it--but that shouldn't be necessary. I completely understand tipping and have no issue doing so when it's earned, but automatically pre-selecting a high tip--especially for something as simple as handing over canned drinks--feels inappropriate. Charging over $3 for a can of soda is one thing, but customers should still have the freedom to choose their own tip amount without pressure. What made it worse was noticing the same thing happen to the customer in front of me, who only bought a single can of Coke. The bartender (tall female with blondish hair) also advised the previous customer that they couldn't pay with cash when he brought out a $20 to pay. Are you serious!!?? This kind of practice comes across as dishonest and reflects poorly on the establishment. I hope management addresses this, because it definitely impacts the overall experience. read more

This place is Pawfect!!! Fun little pet friendly space. We have a 5 month old golden doodle and trying get her acclimated to going out with us. Figured this spot would be perfect to grab some drinks, a bite to eat and catch a college football game. The atmosphere is great and spread out so you and your furry friends can roam and chill. Love the bar set up, food truck and the dog park area. It's now $5 for an all day pass to the large or small dog park but 1000% worth it. The set up and agility courses are a working dogs dream come true. We ordered some beers and the frozen margarita flight. No food this time but looking forward to coming back and updating my review. Great open space with lots of fun, casual seating and river views -and a play area for dogs ( this may have a change according to the folks next to us). I reserved an ultimate package for my dog's first birthday party. The lack of messaging between me and the manager Maxine was terrible. I tried to communicate with her for weeks trying to set it up for my dog. i wanted to know what packages are available, what it comes with etc. The employees couldn't answer any of my questions. One employee had told me that he was going to take care of us, yet we never saw him, or check in on how we were. I understand if it's busy but this was NOT the case, and after planning this I was very disappointed. Pup cups, party hats, and a customizable cake was supposed to be included and they weren't. I wish they could've communicated that they weren't going to have everything that was included in the package or at least refund partially, but they instead gave me $25 gift card to use at the venue. The manager was nowhere to be found. The decorations they promised me was just a sign & basic balloons. I was told it would've been a jungle theme & it was NOWHERE near that. This spot is such a chill place to grab beers and hang out with friends! And the fact that it's dog friendly makes it 100x better! There are many bench seats and individual lounge chairs all facing the main projector tv screen over the bar area. Darts are to the right, and there are many sets of jumbo Jenga spread out across multiple tables. Individual bathrooms are by the right entrance and were very clean. When I saw that Hops & Hounds were opening up a new location, I couldn't help but to be a little excited. I've been to their original location and each visit, had a grand ole time. Not only is this new location within walking distance to a few other spots I frequent, but it has some MAJOR upgrades, that I couldn't wait to check out! Good stuff: comfy seating; two bar areas; two food trucks; right next to the Riverwalk; plenty of photo ops. Not so good: big tree/umbrellas at tables, but doesn't provide much shade from the sun; dog park (no leash area) is no longer free. You have to register on an app and pay $5 for a day pass. Street parking not always available, but there's public parking for $7 right next door. Overall, this is the perfect spot to bring your fur babies..well actually your whole family, to enjoy a nice day out. read more

EXTREMELY GROSS. The husband said: let's check out this dog park / bar downtown. I'm up for it, of course. I'm up for anything. We arrive to see this hot mess of a place. Barking, fighting, rolling in mud, scratching, humping -- and THOSE are the humans! The dogs were worse. There is no supervision or control of dogs or humans despite them charging a membership fee to enter. Only upside: The husband and I had many great conversations, imagining the folks who came up with this idea: "hey let's open a dog park, where the owners can drink and yell at each other while the dogs just go at each other in the background" ... "but wait... if we charge an entry fee shouldn't we pay people to watch over the dogs and break them up and pick up their kaka, you know, like at ALL OTHER PARKS THAT CHARGE MONEY"... "naw, let's just let the owners drink... maybe they won't notice." You know how that turns out. A really gross park that felt like a level of the Hades underworld but worse because, after all, I hear that Hades has a caretaker who CARES. read more

While we came initially for a private event, we have since been and continued to enjoy this unique beer garden. We love seeing so many pups just hanging out with their human families. We came on a night where football was playing. While everyone seemed upset (I think the local favorite was losing), we still had a great time with friends. I had to check out the new hops and hounds on Avenue B. I has been to the original one. I could definitely say that this one is way better. I love the layout. I love that they still focus on dogs, but they are making it better for everyone. Now they do have a fee to use the dog park. If you plan to go often, they do have a membership. If not, it is five dollars to enter the dog park area. You can enjoy the place without having to pay. Your dog does have to be in a leash in that area. I went opening weekend and they had two different food trucks. I ended up getting the lobster rolls at masshole. I recommend it for sure. The bar is big and has seating. I did notice they have another bar. It is on the other side of the park by the food trucks. They have plenty of seating. Some is shaded and some is not so much. You can see the Riverwalk from there. They dog park:they have section for big dogs and a section for small dogs. If you have a furry dog, get ready to have to brush them out before putting them in your car. They use mulch type ground cover. It gets all over the dogs with longer hair. The small dog section is bigger than expected. They have chairs for the hoomans. I like that they have a sink where they can wash the dog bowls. Parking is going to be an issue. It is very limited. It can also be costly if you want to go often. They do have a parking lot adjacent to it. I tried parking there, but the lot was full. The area us popular with other bars nearby, so parking will be the biggest concern. read more

Was very excited to see that Hops and Hounds is finally open downtown. I love the concept marrying drinks and pups. If you feel like going out but hate leaving your pup behind, this is the place for you. I stopped by Sunday around noon and there was an adoption event going on. The vibe is great, open, and friendly. They have "yappy hour" on Sunday from 10-2 with mimosas, micheladas and bloody Marys. I got a pineapple mimosa and enjoyed the nice weather with my pups. The mimosa was awesome! The chairs and couches are really comfy. Some of the furniture have clips where you can tie your dog and not worry about having to hold their leash (GENIUS!) There's also a separate dog park where your pups can roam freely but require a monthly subscription. Could be a good option for those who don't want to go to a regular dog park. The chicken nachos were some of the worst nachos I have had. The beans are grainy and terribly bland. The chicken is small chunks and dry. I feel like anyone could make a better nacho than this... yikes The southwest egg rolls were better but very average bar egg rolls. Tasted more like a fried flautas than an egg roll. If you do bring yours, be prepared that you will be sitting outside the entire time. As you walk up, you'll notice that the restaurant us split into two main areas. One with a full service bar, and one side with an open area. The indoor area is what you'd expect from a bar that served food. Outside was totally different. Two dog parks run alongside the dining area, one for small dogs and one for large dogs. On hotter days, fans are running with mist being sprayed and pushed by the fans. Awesome idea! The food I had expected to be mediocre. I ordered the browned brussel sprouts, boneless wing combo, and the cluck and moo for my Aussie Shepard. (Yes! They have meals for dogs!). The boneless wing combo was good and crispy with a not too overpowering sauce. The brussell sprouts weren't my favorite, but the bacon and sauce really elevated the taste. The dog park in covered with tree shade and many obtacles for dogs to play on! Fans with mist also spray in there to help keep the dogs cool during play time. This is definitely worth a visit!
