You might just start spending the whole of your pocket money here when you should be saving those pennies. It's a good job I don't live around the corner! Every time I've looked at the reviews it's sounded interesting and well worth checking out. In my mind I was going out for a Melbourne style brunch which we're all familiar with. Instead, I got an unexpectedly wonderful taste of French cuisine. My head's still spinning from this experience. After we sat down the server/manager recommended the beef bourguignon, one of the listed specials for the day. I've had this dish a number of times including in France and most recently at France Soir in Toorak Road. It's a favourite of mine. I love a nicely constructed beef stew, basically. The server basically asked me to trust him while also informing me that the chef was French as he appeared to be himself too. To cut to the chase, the dish was absolutely superb. Easily the best beef bourguignon I have had anywhere. The meat was in roughly cut chunks and so beautifully tender but without any danger of being over cooked. The red wine sauce was luscious as well and with some equally well cooked carrot and potato, the dish was utterly wonderful. The perfect dish for a cool Melbourne day. Just so delicious and so hearty and that I carefully mopped up all the sauce with the bread provided. We were very kindly given a complimentary taste of the stewed fruit they serve here. That was superb as well. And, our coffees to finish were fantastic too. This is one of my highlights of the year coming to The Bell Jar. You don't come here for the decor which is impressively lowbrow inside. You come here for the food, and what I was lucky enough to have here today was completely superb.

In fact it is my favourite cafe and brings me happiness and joy every time I frequent the place. Not because it is the ultimate cafe. It doesn't do the best poached eggs, the best coffee or any such. But it does do all of these things very very well. No. The reasons I like this place are much more subtle than this. I like the laid back and simple but well thought out seating, decor and vibe of the place. I like the fact that it is founded and run by a young guy who is clearly passionate about what he does. I also get the feeling that this place is cool - not trying to be cool like so many cafes - it just is. But most importantly for me is the menu. I really like the fact that not only is everything really tasty, it is also slightly original. You will not find any baked eggs with chorizo or avocado, poached eggs with dukka on sourdough here. Everything on the menu is well thought out and subtly different. My favourite is the green eggs and ham - with pesto scrambled eggs, free range ham on an english muffin with tomato relish. Yum! Slightly delerious, hungry for non aeroplane food and waiting for our accommodation to open we 'ducked' in, suitcases and all, for a coffee which then turned into breakfast. Arriving at 6am we were the first customers to be seated, but as the morning went on the place slowly filled up with locals, some bringing their laptops to work over a coffee, some rushing through to get their caffeine hit before heading off to work and some rewarding themselves with a muffin after a workout. Each person greeted like an old friend with a smile. But back to my food. So I ordered the corn fritters. Served with bacon, fresh salsa, avocado and a coriander yoghurt the dish was just divine. Each component balanced perfectly and the yoghurt added a lightness and spark to the whole dish. Honestly the best breakfast I've had in years! My words cannot convey how mind blowing this meal was to be fried, salty, rich, fresh then light. Truly a masterpiece. My partner went for the big breakfast which, true to its name was a huge dish. This was a more of your standard breakfast that was good, but lacked anything additional. Highly recommended. This is a new favorite for me and I cannot wait to go back.

Initial service at the counter from a tall ponytailed server was downbeat and bordering on sour. Not a great impression when you've taken the trouble to come here. The decor is ok without anything startling. Nice exposed bluestone on one of the walls. The couple of rubber duck references dotted around are good but you could make more of it and have it work. Mountain of Bears in Ormond comes to mind in that category, My coffee was broadly good. I'd asked for cold milk on the side to add to a large long black. But, the brew was poured so high in the mug you couldn't add it. And, the brew was almost scalding and I had to wait a while for it to cool. Not a huge thing but it did strike me as thoughtless serving of a simple item. The coffee was reasonable, I thought. Good sized mug and served on a nice board and ultimately it satisfied the taste test. I initially thought it seemed a little burnt but by midway it was tasting good. Everything is $12.50+, with pretty much all the egg dishes are just shy of $20. Now, for a weekend brunch, I have no real problems with these prices. But during the week when you don't necessarily want all the bells and whistles and prefer some simpler, cheaper options (think eggs on toast with optional extras or a standard porridge for under $10), the choices are non-existent. I have tried the breakfast crumble (which was quite nice, but too sweet for my taste) and the wheat-free porridge (the only porridge option). I think the porridge was actually polenta based, which I wished they mentioned on the menu rather than calling it a "seed & grain" mixture (I was expecting something completely different to what arrived on the table). It was ok, but I wouldn't be ordering it again. I like my porridge kept pretty simple (even if it isn't oat based), and this was just a bit too weird for me, not just in terms of consistency but also flavours and toppings wise too. Oh well. I have no doubt I would feel differently about Mitte if I was here on a weekend and ordering one of the yummy sounding egg dishes, but alas, it's Monday and I just want something simple...if they added a few more simpler & cheaper options to the menu I have no doubt it would get an extra star.
