Well, the online pictures were a bit deceiving. We thought it was a formal sit down restaurant. But it's your typical strip mall shop. The staff was very nice and friendly, the food was good, and decently clean tables. But these are just quick sit lunch type tables and they serve all their food from plastic containers, even dine in. That's the part that the online pics don't depict correctly. Good for a lunch, but not for a sit down dinner, imo. For $14 dinners, I want a plate while dining in. Well, I walked into this restaurant, with zero expectations. I was pleasantly surprised and appreciated the fact that I was able to get a decent parking space without having to trek across traffic in a very busy shopping plaza. In reality, I really wanted to see if this Hop Bo Chinese restaurant was any better than the Hop Bo Chinese restaurant in Palm Bay, which is decent, and I understand they are not affiliated. Where this restaurant shines is the food itself. Oh boy, I am elated to tell you that I was very impressed with their food quality. Because this menu item is a good judge of food quality, I ordered the Hunan pork, with fried rice. I received my order once I arrived, and took it home to Palm Bay. This food was amazing. Big chunks of delicious vegetables, large pieces of roast pork, in a delicious savory, umami filled sauce. My mouth is watering just thinking of it today. I had to give it five out of five stars. Whatever they are doing, they need to keep doing it. I will definitely return, and I may try something new, along with my Hunan pork or chicken. I do not want to comment on the appearance or cleanliness of the restaurant because I did not spend enough time inside to accurately form a objective opinion. It was shortly before 9pm on a Wednesday. Wife and I were on our way home and we're hungry. We wanted pho, but there weren't any Vietnamese restaurants still open. A Thai restaurant we went to was closing, so we went to HopBo in the same shipping center. Standard Chinese takeout restaurant. Ordered wonton soup, shrimp Egg Foo Yung, and orange beef. To go. Then while we sat I opened Yelp and saw their rating. Oh well. Money spent, hopefully they did better than their 2.8 rating. Got the food home. First course was the soup. Decent enough broth, lots of ok wontons. The crispy noodles that accompanied were pretty stale. If they were in a bowl on the table in a proper restaurant, I wouldn't have eaten them. The orange beef was lacking in both orange and beef. There were large pieces of deep fried batter, but they didn't have any recognizable pieces of beef. The sauce was OK, but there was hardly any sauce on the dish to cover the flavor of the fried batter. And usually there's a bunch of sweet and spicy orange peel pieces in the sauce. I was one tiny, skinny piece of orange peel. Not enough to chew on. There were five broccoli florets in the entire container. The Egg Foo Yung wasnt much better. Deep fried in the same old oil, they were very greasy. The shrimp were small and flavorless. The gravy was acceptable, but it had to be eaten with lots of Chinese mustard. Since the new owner took over, I am very pleasantly surprised. Not only is the new owner, Emma (I believe her name is) very friendly and gracious, but the food was delicious. I ordered wonton soup, and I loved the fact that the wontons were a little more delicate than the tough ones you usually get. The soup was very good. I also tried the hot and sour soup, and it was also good, nice spice to it. I also had chicken and vegetables, and it had lots of tender chicken and crisp vegetables, which I enjoyed. I also ordered Mongolian beef and was given a very nice portion of tender beef with a spicy velvety sauce. They came with an egg roll and fried rice. I'm writing this review because I feel lied to. I had a craving for chow mein so I looked up the closest Chinese food around my area and saw this restaurant. Even though it had low reviews, I decided to give it a try. I ordered my food online and was told to pick it up in 30 mins. I got there about 40 mins later and they didn't have my food ready to go. That's fine, I waited a bit while they got the other orders out. When I got my food, I should've checked out what I got. But instead, I just took it and left. I got home and opened up the food and realized that there is no chow mein. I called the restaurant and a lady picked up. I told her that there was a mistake because I didn't get a chow mein but instead got something else. She started arguing with me saying that I was the one that ordered wrong, and rudely told me that THERE IS NO NOODLES IN CHOWMEIN. WHAT THE FUCK WORLD ARE YOU LIVING IN? She said that I clearly ordered wrong and if I wanted noodles, I should've ordered "lo mein". Located in the same strip mall at the southeast quadrant of the Lake Washington Rd. and Wickham Rd. intersection, the one that also has LA Fitness, Thrifty Produce, and Egg & I, it is on the outside your typical New York Style Chinese take-out place. The interior is generic among other restaurants of its ilk which is neither a benefit or hindrance. The service and food are both good which may or may not be saying much as Hop Bo is on par with other good New York Style Chinese food take-out restaurants. Ordered on a Sunday. For some reason, the cook maybe, the food tastes totally different depending on day of the week. General Tso's chicken had NO flavor, nothing. There are three types of Chinese restaurants in this area: the classic sit-down restaurant, the buffet restaurant and the take-out place. Hop Bo falls into the last category and they do take-out well. The one major plus for take-out is that you know the food is freshly made and hot - something that isn't always a given at buffet style places. The food is a bit generic - certainly there is nothing that stands out. It's the same basic menu you'd expect of any such Chinese restaurant. I do find the food itself to a bit more flavorful than other take-out places like No. 1 Chinese and a LOT more than Cheng's (Satellite Beach). My normal order is beef with broccoli and I must say that this is one of the few places that does the broccoli justice. Most places I have tried, the broccoli is limp and 'turning' [brown]. Hop Bo, on the other hand, tends to be crisp and green - a definite plus. Another dish they've done right, in my opinion, is General Tso's Chicken. Though Hop Bo isn't the only one that does it the way I like it, they're the only take-out place to do so in that, while there is plenty of sauce, the coating on the chicken remains crunchy and not soggy. The staff is very pleasant and friendly and more than willing to help you out if you are unfamiliar with a dish. There is seating available, but few people actually eat in the store itself. It's really geared more for take out. But if you do sit and eat there, you'll find the decor is very basic and boring. And the only thing on the TV is children's programming - apparently for the little ones that are a constant fixture at this particular place. Pricing is pretty fair and you do get quite a bit for what you pay. I have yet to be disappointed. Usual waits for take out orders are between 15 and 20 minutes, depending on how busy it is. They do not deliver. If you walk-in and place an order, there are plenty of shops nearby that you can visit while waiting, including the Albertson's Supermarket. read more
