Seaport Merchants - One of the owners holding up a live lobster.

THE freshest fish you can buy in East York or Scarborough…read more Went out to pick up lunch. I walked to Moms N Paps AND Amato and was sorely disappointed that both were closed. A sign caught my eye "Live lobster". Oh yeah, I'm going in! And no, I didn't want to take him home and boil him alive; I just enjoy watching live sea creatures in an aquarium. This store is run by a lovely couple, Lorne and Marilyn, who are experts in customer service and whose family have run this business for 42 years. With all the pictures I took inside their store I thought I owed it to them to purchase something. I told Marilyn that I wasn't intending to stop in so all I had was $10; one downside of this store is that there are no price lists or price tags on anything. Marilyn suggested a beautiful thick Salmon filet. When I arrived home, I seasoned the filet and steamed it, taking care not to overcook it. I served it with oriental noodles and corn because that's all I had available. It was enough for a nice light lunch for me and my hubby. The Salmon was the tastiest, most delicious, mouth watering filet I have ever had at this price point in Toronto. I'm from Southern California so fresh seafood is abundant and cheap. The times when we are far away from the coast I rarely buy seafood at the store or order seafood from a restaurant because it's just not fresh; if it's fresh, it costs an arm and a leg and an organ or two. I will never buy fresh or frozen fish anywhere else. If you are any where close to the corner of Victoria Park and St. Clair, then you must visit this quaint nautically themed seafood market. Services listed on their website: - A selection of fresh and frozen seafood, arriving daily. - Cooked Lobster and Seafood Platters - Made to Order. - Reserving or Picking out their own Lobster, Fish Fillet or piece of Newfoundland Salt Beef. - Various Maritime products including Purity Candy & Cookies, Fries and Gravy Chips, Pineapple Pop, King Cole Tea, Mt. Scio Savoury and a selection of jams, seasonings and sauces. - Dinner party equipment rentals.

They sell old-fashioned salted cod. The owners are very nice and personable. They were full of good ideas for the perfect accompaniments to their seafood selection; lots of recipe ideas. Great, fresh seafood. They also have lots of frozen seafood - lobster tails, claws, king crab, stuffed crab shell, tons of shrimp, etc. They sell hickory smoked oysters and mussels.....mmmmm. They also sell saltwater taffy and other kinds of candies - bullseye sugar & molasses. They have Fraser's meatballs & gravy, a wide selection of Purity crackers and syrups, and original Old Bay seasoning! That's almost impossible to find in Canada. They've got all of the seasonings you could ever possibly need for seafood. This is an undiscovered gem in the heart of Scarborough! Definitely recommended.

I placed and fully paid for a pre-order of a Shima Aji fish about a week in advance. I got multiple…read moreemails confirming the product, pickup date, and order details. It all looked locked in -- no issues. Then on pickup day, I call slightly early to ask if I can come by sooner... and out of nowhere, I'm told "oh, we don't have your order anymore." No email, no call, nothing. I was completely blindsided. Even more ridiculous -- only after I called did I receive a half-assed "sorry, item not available" email. It was obviously rushed and only sent because I reached out first. They had zero intention of proactively telling me the item wasn't coming. So I asked to speak to the manager. And that's when things got worse. The manager -- and I say this with zero exaggeration -- was incredibly rude, condescending, and completely unapologetic. He actually tried to tell me that the emails I received "weren't real confirmations." Seriously? I paid in full, got a pickup date, and now you're claiming that none of it was official? No accountability, no empathy, no basic customer service. Just gaslighting and attitude. This whole experience completely ruined my plans for that evening. I wasn't just upset -- I was floored by how aggressively dismissive the manager was. I've filed a formal complaint with Consumer Protection Ontario, submitted a BBB report, and left a Google review. I'm posting here so others know exactly what kind of service you can expect. If you're planning a special event, dinner, or anything time-sensitive -- DO NOT rely on this place. The way they treat paying customers is absolutely unacceptable.

You get to keep all the food you make in the culinary arts classes so i usually attend classes on the weekend. The classes also double as my meal prep session for the upcoming work week. I suggest attending a sunday morning class (if possible) to all part time students because street parking is free on sunday mornings. The quality of the ingredients are superb. I remember learning how to fillet fish and the seafood came from Diana's seafood. The butter we used is from sterling creamery. The salmon we used to barbecue was sashimi grade so our instructor made us ceviche with the leftover salmon! You can definitely taste the quality of the ingredients that are provided in your classes. The instructors i've had are patient, laid back and funny. I think my three favorite elective courses would be BBQ, Indian cooking, and Thai cooking. The introduction to culinary arts course (compulsory course) gave me the confidence to attempt more difficult recipes and different types of cuisines at home. The course covers the fundamentals of cooking and is well worth the investment (even if you are not interested in the culinary program). I cannot wait till social distancing rules are lifted and GB offers culinary classes again. For now, i will read the course outlines and drool while deciding what to take next.
