Matt was able to accommodate us on short notice when other instructors could not. We texted some info so he could fit us with boards and water shoes. We met up with Matt in Waikiki, got some on-land instruction, and off we went into the water. He took us to a place where there were small waves water shallow enough for a 5+ foot person to stand and not be carried out by the currents, perfect for beginners who have never before swam out into the ocean on a large board. He picked waves that he thought were appropriate for our skill, and all of us were able to stand on our boards riding a wave for 4 or more seconds. After a few tries, we were mostly able to surf the wave quite a grid distance towards shore. Matt rotated us to make sure we all had a turn and his individual attention. He kept a close eye on us to make sure we didn't drift in the current. Failure is a disincentive to enjoying a new activity, and Matt saw to it we were as successful as we could be. The ocean is an unforgiving force, and Matt made the experience easy and enjoyable. Make sure to bring bandaids - not any fault of Matt's but things in the ocean can still leave you with the usual bumps and scrapes common to any water faring activity. The kids now think of themselves as surfers and want to do this again. Matt tells us he is from the Basque region of France, where he also surfed and taught surfing. Now he teaches surfing in Hawaii. I took a SUP lesson with The Surf Professor in Kaneohe and was able to see Chinamans Hat for the first time in a very special way. Ian was calming and his instruction was clear. He taught me about reading the ocean and being able to identify areas I should avoid based on how the ocean behaved on the surface. As we paddled out further he gave me a brief Hawaiian Landscape Mythology talk of what we could see. I was even able to ride a small rolling surf which I'd never thought I'd like. Hands down best SUP lesson I've ever had. I'm planning on taking a surf lesson with The Surf Professor soon. If you want a more personalized experience away from the usual tourist mayhem, this is the guy to go to. Long session to be able to really learn. My son (4.5) had surfed before but Tristan got him on the board alone for a couple of waves, and was understanding when his stamina ran out an hour in. My daughter (2.5) was great on land, but hated the waves once in the water, but she was never pressured. I'm an experienced surfer but only get out about once a year so Tristan was able to help me get that muscle memory back, and was patient when I took breaks to check on my kids (and husband! They weren't alone). Even my husband who vowed never to surf again said he'll try it next time with these guys! Would definitely recommend for anyone learning to surf on the north shore!

He was in the front with his BFF & when he realized that people were looking at him, he froze, covered his face, & refused to move THE ENTIRE TIME. Then he started school and was still reluctant to speak in front of his class. When he joined a cheer team who was going to compete in front of HUNDREDS of people over a weekend, I was more than a little nervous. But my little boy SHINED and loved the whole competition weekend, including the performance part.
