I recently came to Ohana Hale Marketplace (OHM) on a holiday to meet up with a friend (Nadine C., aka Auntie) for lunch. But our original plans fell through as the business is closed on Mondays. I was feeling lazy and didn't want to drive to another venue so we ended up staying at OHM. When asked where I wanted to go for lunch, there were several places that popped up. One of them was Honolulu Bistro (HB), as I've seen multiple pics and videos of their famous grilled cheese sandwiches and the "cheese pulls". DISCLAIMER: I'm a fan of making grilled cheese but not so much on eating them. It seems that many kids were introduced to grilled cheese from a young age but I had a late start. I mean, it's okay but just not a fan. However, I am a fan of the cheese pull. It's so cool to document this event. So, I'm more for documenting the sandwich over eating it. Located on the Makai side of OHM, Honolulu Bistro is a small, locally owned business that offers savory and sweet grilled cheese sandwiches, fresh juice and coffee drinks. I had already ordered my lunch but wanted to make the most of my day off by having a little variety to my lunch. There was a guy who arrived in front of me and while talking to the staff, it allowed me to study the menu and my eyes locked on their Pesto Delux (mozzarella, pesto, sun dried tomatoes, spinach and smoked turkey). I paid for my food and was given a number. I was advised an approximate 15 min wait. As instructed, I came back and my food was already waiting for me. HB seems popular as a small line to order had formed. I took my box back to my table and was anxious to document the cheese pull. I was very impressed as I opened my box. The grilled cheese was executed beautifully with a nice golden crust. This heightened my expectations and Auntie is so awesome because she came with rubber gloves and was my hand/glove model to my cheese pull video. This Pesto Delux sure didn't disappoint. The ooey gooey cheese documented very well and my video lasted just under 30 seconds. The TASTE: It had a great exterior crunch and the cheese was nice and gooey. Flavor wise, the pesto, spinach and sun dried tomatoes brought a freshness to the sandwich. The grilled cheese was executed well. Overall, a very fulfilling experience at HB where I'm glad I finally gave them a try. To my disappointment, I only found out later that a Yelp check-in will result in $1 off any item. Now I know to check in just before ordering to capitalize on this perk. read more

I discovered this place on Instagram, after seeing photos of their delicious pastrami sandwich made me want one for myself. So, I came with my family to check this place out. Pastrami sandwiches are one of my favorite. Well... Let me say this was one incredibly DELICIOUS pastrami sandwich!! I was not disappointed at all!! The sandwich was filled with mozzarella cheese, generous amount of sliced pastrami, and to top it off caramelized onions. Love onions! On the side is kosher dill pickles and in a separate container the sauce. I didn't use the sauce, I enjoyed the sandwich just the way it was. If my stomach could handle all of the dairy, I would eat here everyday if I could. My mom and I were at Ala Moana hunting for something to eat. We wanted something casual and were in the food court but became overwhelmed with all of the people. As we were walking, we stumbled upon Honolulu Bistro! They have the coolest counter table to sit at and we loved how low key and calm the vibe of this place is. The smoothies are SO GOOD and taste so fresh. And also for something as simple as a grilled cheese sandwich, Honolulu Bistro executes it so well! Our pastrami was cut to the perfect thickness and paired well with the cheese and their house sauce! My mom and I shared one and were content with it, and I'm sure if I came back while I was hungry I would've eaten a whole one myself. Got the deluxe pesto, organic tomato soup & jungle beach smoothie. All 3 were really good. The deluxe pesto had a really nice cheese pull. They even heated up the turkey in there for me because I am pregnant. The bread was nicely toasted and the sun dried tomatoes added a nice flavor to balance the heaviness of the cheese. The tomato soup wasn't too salty and paired perfectly with the sandwich. Think of an elevated grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup. The jungle beach smoothie was nice and refreshing. Things didn't start out so great with my experience. I made an order online Tuesday (closed Mon/Tue) which their website took and charged my card. Luckily I received call 10 min later apologizing for the mishap and made a refund. Come Wed, made another order online for the pastrami sandwich. When came for pickup, they advertise curbside pickup if you call their phone. Called twice and no answer. So had to park and go get it myself. Don't advertise if you cannot follow through. The sandwich was very big and meaty. It was also very salty. I think they put too much cheese which makes it more salty. The side of pickles where a joke. At least give a full slick, not 3 little chunks. I would try them again for their other sandwiches, but their pastrami was too salty. read more

First time trying Honolulu Bistro; hands down this surpassed my expectations. First off, it's located at Ala Moana on the outside of the food court drown from/ on Old Navy side of the parking lot. There's about 4 stools for seating (it's more of an order and take to the food court/beach). Ordered the $8 medium mango smoothie (good, but a little pricey) and the $11 Pesto Deluxe grill cheese sandwich with chicken was A+ first bite perfect crunch toast, and the mixture Mozzarella Cheese, Spinach, Sun Dried Tomato & Pesto With Hickory Smoked Turkey full of flavor from the first bite. I've always known of this place from Instagram but finally was able to stop by and try it out. First of all, these sandwiches were very filling and the cheese inside The Local Deluxe was perfect! The have a variety of menu options for sandwiches and smoothies as well. All though I only tried their sandwiches, this alone made me want to come back. The combination was perfect and I would've never thought of combining angus corned beef and hash brown with American cheese all into one! We recently went to Honolulu Bistro few days ago after seeing on IG that it opened up. We went about 2:45 and it wasn't busy. Lucky! I was able to order right when we walked in. Your able to order in person, by phone and online. We ordered 4 sandwiches. The first one is the local deluxe which had corned beef, crispy hash browns and American cheese. The second sandwich is the pesto deluxe which had turkey, mozzarella cheese, sun dried tomatoes and pesto. The third sandwich is the PB & J sandwich and you're able to choose from creamy or crunchy PB and strawberry jelly or grape jelly topped with powdered sugar. The last sandwich but definitely not the least is da aloha which is a mozzarella cheese dyed like a rainbow. My kids enjoyed that because it was a rainbow. The local deluxe was for my husband and he enjoyed it, I took a bite and it was really good, even though in my opinion the American cheese makes it salty but it was still good. I'd probably ask for less American cheese next time. The PB & J was my daughters favorite. She loves anything peanut butter! Da aloha was supposed to be for my son but after tasting the pesto deluxe he wanted to switch and if you know my son he's a picky eater so I was happy to give him mines. This is a must try place. I am literally about to go into a food coma as I write this. I ordered the gourmet pastrami grilled cheese. Oh. My. Goodness. It's so good. It comes with a sauce but I tried my first bites without it and the sandwich can definitely stand on its own. It's super meaty (so don't just expect cheese) but there's also a good amount of cheese in there. The caramelized onions are a nice touch and add more variety to the texture of the sandwich. I only wish there were more pickles. It worked so nicely in between bites of the sandwich that I wish I had more. And then you add the sauce to the sandwich and you're like, why did I try it without the sauce?? I did not take the time to try and figure out what kind of sauce it is. Honey mustard blend? No clue. But it works well with this sandwich. Honestly, y'all should think of serving fries with this sauce to dip in. I would be all over it. The only thing keeping me awake at this point is the smoothie I ordered. The exotic prince has coffee and hints of macadamia nut in its flavor. Glad I went for this instead of a fruit flavor because I still have to go back to work. The smoothie was nice and smooth. This flavor is very rich and almost like having a frappe. Sooo good. I got their basic grilled cheese sandwich and their avocado smoothie. My friend got their pesto sandwich and the ginger smoothie. Everything was so Ono. The bread was perfectly proportioned to the sandwich filling, and super flavorful. Can't wait to come back. My only thing is that the avocado smoothie tasted more like apple than avocado, and their seating is limited - but hey - they do to-go orders as well, and the orders come out reasonably quickly so that's awesome! read more

I order the OG (traditional grilled cheese) with tomato soup and a small ginger mix. This spot is cute, small and right before you get to the food court. Eating here is less crowded and nice view of ppl walking by. Love the furniture and friendly customer services. I paid $22 dollars for my lunch so it's a little pricey but this is Hawai'i so be prepared to spend more money than you would on the mainland. Now let's get to the taste of the food. The ginger mix was light and refreshing. I had an upset tummy so this ginger was just what I needed. Not too sweet very light with the sugar so this is great for when you don't want anything too sweet but refreshing. The tomato soup was sweet and not tart or acid like. I enjoyed the soup. However, the OG was just a basic grilled cheese nothing exciting. The bread was normal size, I was expecting extra large bread. It was good but not 4 stars good. Tasty but overpriced. We had a pharmaceutical rep lunch the other day and decided to try this restaurant for the first time. We ordered through Bite Squad as we almost always do. We know that their prices are slightly higher in comparison to going to the restaurants in person, but usually the portion sizes &/or items included are worth the price. It was tasty. I would order it again. One thing I especially like about this place is that the food is made to order. BUT, you wouldn't need to with Honolulu Bistro. The shokupan bread used compliments the cheese goodness perfectly. The ratio of cheese to bread is generous and has that filling feeling where you don't feel cheated. It's the amount of cheese that one would put in their own cheese. Tried the corned beef version, and for me it was a little too salty. Good idea, just a little too much. Tried the pesto deluxe and that felt upper classish where it elevated the humble grilled cheese. If you like pesto, sundries tomatoes, and mozzarella then definitely try this. read more

I only found out about this place since I got $1 off on the Five Stars app and happened to be going to the Makai Market Food Court already at Ala Moana! It is on the left of the food court with neon signage and cool decor. The employee who took my order was very friendly and smiled. He recommended the pastrami sandwich and since my whole family loves pastrami, I got it for them and they loved it! The house sauce on the side tastes like a sweet honey mustard and was very good. Visited Honolulu Bistro yesterday and usually don't like Bistro's cause to me it means little food and high prices. But I'm glad to see Honolulu Bistro was different. I tried the pastrami sandwich with the mango drink and "loved" both the sandwich and the drink. There was enough pastrami and cheese ratio that I liked. It even came with a mustard sauce that I thoroughly enjoyed. The mango drink was also delicious. Can't wait to go back to try the corn beef sandwich. The guy serving at the counter was very helpful and pleasant all though he was the only one there and had a nice crowd. He handled the crowd and did everything like a pro. Tucked away in the right side corner of the mall, this place is definitely worth trying! What caught my eye was the grilled peanut butter and jelly so that is what this review is based on. But, Friends, let me tell your that there were at least 6 other sandwiches I wanted to try!!! (Pastrami, Chipotle Chicken, OG grilled cheese... I'm coming for you)!!! We ordered two versions of the same sandwich (strawberry jelly with creamy peanut butter and grape jelly with crunchy peanut butter). Both were amazing, but I think I prefer the grape jelly with crunchy peanut butter. The extra texture of the crushed peanuts was a nice contrast to the soft warm insides of the sandwich. The bread was grilled to a nice crispness. Gotta have that buttery crunch when you first bite in. Powdered sugar was a nice touch. Overall loved the sandwich. Brought back waves of nostalgia from my childhood. Also tried the green juice. Yummy! read more
