All dough, VERY LITTLE filling and they just didn't taste good. All you could really taste was the dough. Wonton soup. How hard is it to screw this up?? Broth had ZERO flavor...very little (if any) filling and once again?? All you could taste were the wrappers...which like the dumplings?? Were thick...lasagna noodle thick. On to the cold noodles with peanut sauce. Ordered this dish as Hong Kong Ruby is one of the few places that offers it. Never again. Never ever again. I have been a long time customer, but only recently revisited to get take out. It was on a Saturday afternoon so you would think they were on their A game, but how disappointing. I ordered chicken and broccoli (lg) and the children breast meat was very rubbery. No time was taken to tenderize or velvet the meat in this easy stir fry dish. I was barely given any sauce, just enough to 'cover' the stir fry. Although I ordered the Large , I was given a loosely packed small ( burger sized) styrofoam clam shell take out container, not the regular packed pasta the rim paper take out box . This was such a disappointment! Food here in the past has always been so good. Today it was over sauced, stale tasting (maybe past the "sell by date" so to speak) and just awful! We were already on our way to Sakana for lunch when we realized it was Monday - keep forgetting that most Asian restaurants close on Mondays in this area. We called Himalayan Fusion next door and confirmed it's closed as well. When we got to the strip mall, we were glad to find Hong Kong Ruby open - even on a Christmas Eve Monday. +1 on dedication! We have never been here before and today's visit wasn't by choice. We looked at the menu and were disappointed that there's not one authentic dish. Aside from Pho, which I found it odd and out of place, the menu offers the typical American Chinese cuisine from the 1980's. But there's little recourse. We ordered just 2 dishes to go: Beef Chow Fun $10.95 and House Special Fried Rice $10.25. The manager was friendly and courteous during the ordering process. The prices and quantities definitely seemed fair but the food we had was awful. The chow fun was soggy and greasy, with the noodles all clumped together. The fried rice was salty and downright stodgy. We struggled to finish either dish. These were worse than average Chinese food found in food courts. I'd like to assume that their regular chef took a day off on this day before Xmas, but we most likely won't give it another try. read more

I'm not a huge fan of Chinese-American food; but when I get a taste for it, there's no better place locally than Hong Kong Ruby. Their menu is varied, the food is well prepared, and the prices are reasonable. With the pandemic, we've been ordering more takeout, so I've not dined in for some time. That said, about updating this review to say emphatically that HKR does pandemic takeout right! Ordering can be by phone or via their website, and long wait times are unusual. Ask for no plasticware, chopsticks, soy sauce or fortune cookies if you desire. When you pull into a space in front, you'll see a table on the sidewalk with takeout menus, hand sanitizer, a box of disposable masks, and a note to call for pick-up. Usually, a call is unnecessary, as they see you waiting from inside and come out to greet you. You never have to actually go inside. The food is brought out in plastic bags, hot and ready to go. Plenty of fancier restaurants (not naming names) could learn a lesson from HKR. read more

We ordered take out last night 2/23/21 and the food was so disgusting. The General Tso chicken smelled and tasted like cat urine. The egg rolls were so greasy that they slipped out of our hands. Then we found a metal sliver in our food. Called them about the whole order and they wanted to give us 1/2 off one of the meals. Don't get me started on the smell of the whole complete order. I had the General Tso and steamed dumplings. Everything was very good. The fried rice had generous portions of pork and flavored well. The service was extremely fast. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. The General Tso chicken was prepared very well, decent cuts of white meat and the sauces paired well not too sweet and not too spicy. When you purchase a dinner combination you get an egg roll and a crab ragoon as well which were also tasty. Interior design is also nice. Has a good warm, inviting feel in this restaurant. I ordered the general three delicacies and dumplings via Uber eats. In special requests I asked them for 5 mustards and received NONE. As for the main dish, it is described as hot and spicy. It is not. It is sickeningly sweet. N addition there were only two shrimp and four tiny scallops. This is my third update, and a first for me. I rarely update my reviews once, and have never done so twice...until now. Hong King Ruby can't be anything but a 5 star establishment. Nearly all of my complaints from my first experience are no longer an issue. 1.) The boneless ribs must have been a mistake the first time, because they are as good as any I've had now. They get a nice char on some of them, and they are perfectly balanced between sweet and savory. Excellent. 2.) The egg rolls are unique. They must put Chinese Hot mustard in the mix. This isn't really my jam, but the egg rolls are cooked perfectly (almost) every time. Sometimes they are a little overdone, but more times then not, they are perfectly golden, not dry in the middle, and just great. 3.) Crab Rangoon: There has been more filling since the first time we've gone. It seems like they either made a mistake, or a change. The same goes for the wontons in the wonton soup. They are also filled much more appropriately now. Additionally, the soup has a very nice flavor that goes beyond typical wonton soup. Also, very well-balanced. 4.) Service: Who I presume to be the owner/manager is a gentleman who is always whipping around the dining room with a smile on his face. Additionally, the elderly woman who also serves and assists in the dining room is also extremely pleasant. They get 5 stars on the first person mentioned alone, but it seems like they really care about their business. 5.) Price: $18.75 for all three of us (before tip). Can't be anything but a 5, and not sure how I came up with a 3 before? I'm a man though. I can admit when I'm wrong. 6.) Atmosphere: I can't think of too many places that serve similar fare that look like Hong Kong Ruby on the inside. Again, I can't see how this can be anything but a 5. It is always clean, inviting, and well-kept. It seems upscale, and has a great vibe. Again, I was wrong here too. I haven't been to China Tea House in a long time now that I am on East Shore, but this well-surpasses Ho Wah in overall quality and service. Ho Wah's boneless ribs are still a touch better, but the General here at Hong Kong Ruby is perfect. Erase everything I have ever said about Hong Kong Ruby. The General is perfect. Light, crispy, not drowning in sauce, and the sauce is masterfully balanced. I will leave you with this, Hong Kong Ruby seems to have listened to my chief complaints, or maybe they even received them elsewhere too? Or, my first experience was an anomaly of the highest degree. Either way, we have been to Hong Kong Ruby at least once every two weeks for a few months now. That is a clear indicator that this is a 5 star establishment in my book. If you have tried Hong Kong Ruby in the past and weren't blown away, you need to try them again. I am very glad that I did. There isn't anything that I would change about anything here. We have literally ordered from here every other week at least. They do their chinese food very well compared to many in the area. Every time we order, our food is fresh, hot, and delicious. We have ordered both delivery and pick up. When you go to pick up, they have a table set up outside to promote social distancing. They ask for numbers or names and seem to be very organized during this quarantine. My lemon chicken is one of my favorite things that can be done very wrong if ordered from the wrong place. They do it extremely well. My chicken is always crispy and they serve the lemon sauce warm on the side. They give plenty of soy sauce and fortune cookies.
