Charleston is one of our favorite culinary destinations and now we can head to downtown Hendo and be there much sooner. Mom and I were able to celebrate her birthday (no comment on which one) dinner here, and it was my first visit. It took me back to our fine southern dining! The whole menu sounds wonderful and the drink menu looks wonderful as well. Only problem, we can't eat and drink all that's on it. So, I settled on meatloaf and sides. All were presented well and very good. Collards rivaled any in the south! Mom had pulled pork and it was very tasty. It did have a little gristle in it, but not bad. The southern flair was evident in all the desserts!! Chess bars were excellent. Portions were southern size and prices were surprisingly good for the quality of this dining establishment! Stopped by while staying in the area for work. Got a local draft beer and placed an order to go for catfish, greens and coleslaw. Was delish. Bartender made a mistake and let me keep it free if charge even after I tried to give it back too, which as someone who used to work in the restaurant industry I consider to be a pretty kind gesture. Looking for a change from the run of the mill chain restaurant scene and you're due to visit Hometown roots. Home grown Southern food. Showed up early Saturday night was greeted and introduced to the menu by the owner's Mom, who was obviously very proud of the place with good reason. First of all, I am not a reviewer or even a post-er on social media....but I thought I would share our experience at Hometown Roots last night. Let's start with the positive - the restaurant has a great vibe. It's name suits the establishment. The hostesses were welcoming and cordial upon arrival. We were a party of 6 - our name was added to the list at 6:22 by the first of our party to arrive. They were told it would be a 40 min wait. We all proceeded to the bar to wait and get a drink. It was packed. Things started to unravel here. One member of our party got the bartenders attention almost immediately - and got drinks for 3. We then scored one barstool directly in front of the bartender - and proceeded to wait our turn for another chance to order a couple of wines and a bottle of beer. He was busy - fine - I told him when he was ready to let me know. So we chatted and we waited. However, he skipped us several times and started helping others who were clearly coming up after we did. He told me - you are next. Great. Guess what? Started to skip me - again - for a guy who "really needed a beer". Our wait, at this point, had been around 45 min. because I considered just waiting til we were seated to get my wine! Good thing I didn't. I would presume we waited around an hour and 15 min for a table - after a friend ( who was not w our group) noted that 2 larger parties that were behind us on the hostess list had been seated ahead of us. We went to inquire - again. Once seated - we watched several parties of 2 (who were seated just after we were) get their food, eat and be done before we had even been served our appetizers. The owner came by looking for another patron. He was young and cordial. It was when a side salad finally appeared after waiting for almost an hour - I had had enough. It was 8:30 at this time. I went and said something to the owner - who was polite and told me my order had only been in for 16 min. Well 16 min rolled by awfully slow then. He did go check on our order and finally some progress was made. Our friend who wasn't with us - came in after we did, got seated around the same time as we did, ate apps, dinner and was leaving as our salad arrived. Much of our food was cold when it finally was served. Here's my advice - if you are a party of 2 or 4 - you will be fine. Food was good home-styled southern cooking. Cornbread was delicious and a welcomed addition. Servers were friendly. I truly believe our party of 6 simply got lost in the shuffle of a busy Saturday night. We are not from Henderson - we are from Evansville - so it didn't help that we had no pull. One last bit of advice - after I had talked to the owner....it would have been nice if he had come back to check on us, acknowledge us, apologize - make some sort of contact. He is young. His manager(?) did come by and tell us to come back when it isn't so busy. All said and done - I walked in the door at 6:32 and I walked out at 9:29. 3 hours for a sandwich, some really good cornbread, soggy brussel sprouts and potatoes that had to be sent back to warm up - oh! and a glass of wine. Our bill wasn't even split correctly - it was just THAT kind of experience. It was a packed house - so they must be doing something right. It just wasn't quite that way for us. read more

Had dinner there with three colleagues from work Tuesday October 23. I liked the decor. The food was good about on the spicy hot side. I had the shrimp and grits. We also experienced the deep fried deviled eggs, very good. The noise level was very loud once the place started filling in. Our waitress was very nice and attentive but one of our meals took almost 10 minutes to get after the rest of the meals came out. Next time I'm in Henderson though, I come back. read more

Hometown Roots is a very good place to casual eat and drink. The food there is reasonably priced along with not terrible to eat. I had the Buffalo Mac and it was very good but not as good as what my husband got. He got the catfish and it was AMAZING!!! The crust on it was perfect! We went around 5 o'clock so the crown was not bad we were seated as soon as we walked in. Definitely a place that you need to at least check it out. read more

Group of 4, seated right away. Server was mediocre. Food was over priced. One visit was enough for me, I wont go back. 1) ordered water, no lemon. Arrived with lemon 2) cornbread delivered but waited 15 minutes to get bread plates 3) half our group had food served. I was so hyped to eat here, I really wanted to like it so bad. I said to myself, you know why this restaurant will succeed? Because they make stuff people won't cook at home, but will want to eat. I said an a lot of Italian restaurants fail (an Italian restaurant was in the same spot originally) because if you serve something that the common man deduces as just as good as sauce from a jar they won't pay the high prices to go there as often, if at all. I even went into Home Roots intending to buy two large gift cards for a mom and stepmom for Christmas even though it's only October because it fit in our budget this month. The bucket of nachos was really good and I found myself quickly filling up on them, which was probably one of my bigger mistakes which is why when I absolutely hated my hot brown and my server asked me if I wanted to replace it with something else I was like nah I'm not hungry anymore and he took MORE THAN HALF OF IT AWAY but did not take it off my bill. The hot brown was super rich from the gouda mournay sauce, and super salty from the country ham, and again also super salty from the bacon, it was JUST A GIANT SALT LICK, it was a bad combination and there was nothing to mitigate it except a tiny bit of abused tomato, and I know what you're thinking doesn't the gouda mornay sauce mitigate the saltiness of the country ham and the bacon? Well it would if it wasn't just salty enough to not do the trick, and make it worse. It was goddamn awful. The hash brown casserole was the worst I've ever had, it tasted of bell peppers and raw potatoes and nothing else. Like I said, I wanted to like this place so bad and I was still super hyped after having the nachos. Even though I didn't like my meal, I was still going to buy the gift cards because my dining companion liked his catfish (it was a whole catfish, but the supplier filets--if thats the word for it and debones them). He said the twice baked beans were a little spicy. However, the non-removal of a meal I didn't eat on my bill (he sure removed it from the table fast enough preventing my dinner companion from taking it home if they were going to charge us for it anyway), combined with seeing an evening dinner rush with long lines and wait times, and having to wait a super long time just to get our bill and finally leave (all while people stood in line at the door waiting to be seated at a table eagerly), it was all an unpleasant enough experience for me to pass on the gift cards. And I normally tip 30% on even shitty service but I didn't this time. Even though the waiter was nice. Because I feel like maybe he felt like I was making up that I didn't like it and that's why he removed it but didn't take it off the bill or something. He should have made some sort of effort to make it right besides another FULL ON meal which would've arrived when my companion was done eating and was after I've had a lot of the app, part of the other meal, and a little jalapeno cornbread and would have pretty much had to take it fully home. I went in with super high expectations and super excited to eat here after all the rave reviews and the ambitious menu but I left with not only a bad taste in my mouth but also dashed hopes. read more

We love this place and have visited numerous times. The staff is excellent! Always attentive. The food is outstanding and we've tried most of it. Shrimp and grits is the best, but the meatloaf and smashed potatoes are a very close second. Desserts are the perfect serving. We really enjoy their beer selection and how they seem to have so many ever-changing new things to try. The new weekly specials are great. We look forward to trying every one of them. read more

My husband and I went for dinner on a Friday night. We were seated in the bar area. The decor was modern urban very tasteful. The beer and bourbon menus were fairly extensive. The food menu, although limited in selection, had a variety of comfort foods. We were brought a skillet of jalapeño cornbread just after being seated, and it was sinfully good. My husband had the hot brown and it was excellent. I had a house salad that was huge and several of their side items that were good. The house salad was not your average house salad. It had bacon, eggs, cheese, fried black eyed peas, croutons, and tomatoes. The owner and his parents were circulating the restaurant making sure everyone was taken care of. True southern hospitality at its finest. We enjoyed our meal, and we intend to go back soon! read more

One of the best meals I've had in a long time. Went with a group and no one was disappointed. We started with the pimento cheese and deviled egg apps. Loved both but pimiento cheese app was out of this world. I had the Salmon with jalapeño corn and greens sides. It was all delicious! We split two desserts: banana pudding and the cinnamon apple dessert. They were both good with the banana pudding being my personal favorite. I also had the vodka mule which was really good. Been wanting to try this place for a long time. In the past, the waiting line was just too long. The atmosphere and personnel working there are both very positive. We had a party of four. The beer and spirits menu is quite comprehensive. We tried the Pimento Cheese Fritters and Stack of Onions appetizers. They both were okay, but nothing we would reorder. My entree was Shrimp and Grits. The shrimp was cooked properly and the sauce was very tasty. The grits were a big disappointment. They were served in a big ball that had a consistency more like polenta. Please just let the grits be grits. Other entrees consisted of Smoked Meatloaf and the KY Hot Brown. The Hot Brown was good, but the bread appeared to be one slice of Texas toast instead of the standard open-faced concept. This gave the impression of too much bread and kind of threw off the balance of the sandwich. The meatloaf was good, but not exceptional. The Low-Country Greens were a big hit. For dessert we tried the Chess Bar and Strawberry Rhubarb Turnovers. The Chess Bar is good, but extremely sweet. The Strawberry Rhubarb Turnovers had very little flavor. Overall, it was a good meal. We had heard so many positive things about this place that our expectations were high. Perhaps we imagined it to be more than what we experienced. Still it is worth the drive from Evansville and we will try it again. read more

Never knew I liked pimento cheese until I had the fritters. Cornbread is to die for. Every dish is amazing.

I had been anxious to try this place, having heard good things about it. My wife and I both ordered the KY Hot Brown. The ingredients were rich and good (bacon, country ham, mornay sauce, turkey, tomato) but the dish was overwhelmingly salty, to the point I could eat less than half. I understand bacon and country ham are salty, but if there is added salt on top of that which could be left out it would be truly top-notch. My daughter's Mac and Cheese entree was enjoyed, and her fiance had the smoked meatloaf, which he really enjoyed, commenting the mashed potatoes were the best he had ever eaten. The selection of craft beers was excellent and numerous, but let me mention the appetizers. My daughter had the deviled eggs, which were nothing special flavor-wise, but (drum roll) the pimento cheese fritters were absolutely fantastic! My entire party raved about them so make sure you order them. Maybe two orders if you have four or more diners. I will be back and I intend to try the meatloaf the next time. I live in Madisonville and I am glad we have such a restaurant reasonably close to me. The overall experience was quite positive. read more
