these guys are the best, quality plants and great service, plants die but they stand behind what they sell

I've purchased quite a few trees and shrubs from them in the past, but cannot recommend them anymore. I recently had 3 trees die in a span of 2 years: a white pine (rust), a weeping willow, and finally a Norway spruce (which was a replacement for the willow). That spruce died immediately. I have other spruces (from big box stores) in the same yard area that are thriving. They wouldn't honor replacing that spruce as you only get 1 shot with a warranty replacement. Frustrating to eat a sizeable amount of $$$ when they are providing poor quality trees, especially as a repeat customer. I gave them an extra star for their selection of fertilizers and stone/gravel. read more

I freaking love these guys. I don't get why the lower reviews from others - some people are ding dongs I guess. I've gotten my mulch, my dirt, my shrubs and some ornamental trees from these guys over the past 5 years. The stock is honestly among the best around here. During covid, I was able to find stuff here that everybody else was sold out of (be sure to ask if you can't find something because they have a back area with a lot more stuff). I debated writing the review because it's kind of my best kept secret but I felt others needed to know this place is the bees knees. Super nice (owner? manager?) who is very knowledgeable, answers my dumb questions and even loaded my hydrangeas into my car (shrub tetris). My yard has been transformed, piece by piece, over 5 years and it's thanks to this place. read more

Short version of a long story Have used this landscaping company multiple times over 25 years usually descent results. Not sure whats changed over the years but noticed substandard quality of 2 trees I purchased for over $1800. Both died, requested replacements, even chose different type of tree. Took 4 weeks to replace then trees that were delivered were half dead. Original price $525 each. Needless to say I was not happy. After speaking with the senior business owner I was told they'd be replaced and sooner than 4 weeks. The junior owner whom handled my original purchase and replacement calls back the same afternoon, arguing the trees were fine refusing to honor his partners commitment. So now having lost 2k for installation and 2 trees, hoping I can coax and babysit the 2 replacements back to health. You see, the branches are so dry they snap right off and leaves that on a healthy tree look dark green are yellowed and light green. Do Not Waste your hard-earned $$$$ with this place products have become too expensive, poor quality and 1 year replacement guarantee has become a joke! Growing Place Aurora and Naperville have better variety, healthier plants, knowledgeable sales staff and a points system. Where would you go? read more

Last summer these idiots planted a dead tree in my yard, and now they are refusing to honor their guarantee because they are out of stock. They refused to give me a cash refund because they just don't do that. Had I been home when they planted it, I would have refused it. I am angry that I am now out both the purchase price and the planting fee. Why would anyone knowingly pay to have a dead tree planted? The company is dishonest; they knew the tree was dead when they planted it but did so anyway to collect a fee. I called as soon as I saw the dead tree and they claimed it would be fine in the spring. I called this spring and they said give it time. I called and emailed today and they are now out of stock. I am buying a new tree from The Growing Place. read more

Great job by them 3 yrs ago... so went back as we needed a new tree planted and wanted additional landscaping. Owner committed to coming out. Never showed. Called after 10 days. Left him a detailed message. He never returned my call. Really? This is customer service? Disappointed and will no longer be touting this business. read more

This place had been our go-to place for trees and bushes for about 25 years, but in hindsight...I feel we did not get very good quality trees. The lilacs we purchased for the back of our yard 20+ ears ago are long gone...due to some disease or bugs that killed them. We had to take down our huge ash tree last year due to emerald ash borer. But it never was the beautiful "purple" that it was supposed to turn in the fall. We thought we were getting an "Autumn purple ash", but it only turned yellow in the fall. Our "sunset maple" has been a very slow grower, and only turns a dead-brown color in the fall. I feel like we were sold the wrong trees, after being told they had brilliant fall colors. Deceptive sales? The pear we planted was taken out by a strong wind about 10 years ago, so of the three trees purchased from them 25 yrs ago, we're down to just one. We recently went back to find a tree to replace our ash, but their selection was slim. After becoming aware of the strong smell of "weed" from the office, we decided to do our business elsewhere. read more

I have dealt with Home Landscape Materials for years. They never disappoint! Good prices, quality materials and quick professional delivery.

We've had Home Landscape out several times over the years to do everything from seeding, cutting/edging beds, shrub removal and hardscape. Recently we had our sump pump discharge line buried to the storm sewer in the rear yard easement and a downspout buried out about 20 feet. They did this work in one day and it has worked great. No more drainage issues. They work very efficiently and Tom Sr. and Jr. are great to work with on project scope and are competitive with price. read more

Tim was great to work with, and his crew did a real good job. There were some spots where some of the scallions came back, but this was something that Tim indicated could happen. We couldn't be happier with the landscaping job that they did, and we hope to use them again in the future. They are very competitively priced, and they work fast. read more

I purchased a Japanese Maple at this nursery last September for $150, and it didn't survive the winter. I understand it was a particularly rough winter, however since I opted to plant the tree myself instead of paying this nursery $100 to plant the tree for me and to do something that I could do myself they only covered the tree for 50% of the purchase price! I spent $1500 landscaping a rental property and I lost a 2nd tree from Home Depot and they replaced the tree with a new tree. I replaced the Japanese Maple with a new JM that I purchased from Wannemaker's in Downers Grove as they cover the tree 100% for one year and you don't have to pay them $100 to plant the tree! I also got a JM for a lot less money. I only paid $30 for a tree about 1/2 the size. Wannemaker's had a nice selection of different JM trees at better price points. Some smaller trees for $30 & $60, and larger trees than I got at this nursery for $200. Anyway, I suggest that anyone looking for new trees should avoid this nursery and make a trip to Wannemaker's. read more

The previous owners of our house had zero landscaping in the front yard, and the backyard was a complete disaster. We went here the other day looking for a few shrubs and trees to compliment what we had already done. This place is absolutely amazing. You could get lost in the rows of trees, flowering plants, and shrubbery. I fell in love with a red-leafed maple tree, and will be back before the end of spring to get this tree, as well as a rose tree for the backyard. The staff was extremely friendly and very knowledgeable. We were looking for a specific flowering bush, and when we asked, we were told that they did carry them, but gave us a suggestion for another kind of white flowering bush that was even better than the one we were looking for (and a little cheaper as well). The prices here were competitive to other places in the area. They also had a big selection of decorative stones, landscaping rocks, birdbaths, bird feeders and other outdoor accessories. read more

The completion time for our landscaping project was nearly two months. In addition, our landscape designer never communicated with us about this delay. We just never knew if the project would ever be completed. We later asked to have plants replaced according to the company's guarantee policy. It took several calls to have our designer come out and assess the situation, after which he never let us know what the assessment was until we contacted him. After multiple reminder phone calls, the plants were replaced two months later than our initial request. We do NOT recommend this company for courteous, prompt, or helpful customer service. They do not know how to design a decent landscape. If you have a problem, they will not return you call. The prices are high. Do not use this place. There are other places with better prices, better design capability and more responsiveness. read more

We bought mulch from this company a couple weeks ago. The mulch and delivery were fine. It is their sales practice the reason I am giving a bad review. My wife was looking to get mulch. She called and the sales person told her Red or Yellow. She said let's go with yellow. Yellow was $25 more per yard. My wife unfortunately was not price shopping due to our extremely busy schedule and went forward with the yellow not knowing how much more it cost (50%+ more than the red mulch). Yellow happened to be their high end cedar mulch. We were not looking for high end mulch. Just regular mulch. My wife called in after the fact to give feedback and they did not care. She escalated to a manager and it was the same thing. So if you are looking into this company, just be sure you know your pricing and what you want since they will try to sell you the most expensive or not be obvious to tell you your options. read more
