Last summer, Louis' team was fixing the flashing on the dormers of the house next to mine. I had the exact same problem and asked for a quote. One of his men came over and Louis said they would fix it before the bad weather came. Well, Louis called and said he couldn't get to the job, but would patch it up for me so I would have further damage, and then fix it in the spring. Spring arrives a d I call Louis. I can't believe getting a roof was this easy! I started the process of finding a roofer with some trepidation. I have an old victorian in the Elmwood village/west side that I knew needed a complete tear off along with some fire damage that needed repair. I got the obligatory 3-5 quotes and was a bit overwhelmed with the expense. We have a very steep roof with dormers, additions and other twists and turns. A complete tear off plus major carpentry work is no small investment! I noticed while doing the walk through with the roof estimators that everyone seemed to downplay the expense of the fire damage repair. They just did the standard calculation for all roof replacements and said the fire damage would not add "much." Home Handyman came in with a very detailed quote that was not the lowest (it was second lowest), but I could tell that they had clearly accounted for the repairs. They gave me a high and low range depending on how extensive the repairs actually ended up being once the old roof was off. I went with Home Handyman because I thought they were less likely to come up with expensive "adjustments" to the quote once construction had started. Once the weather cleared, Home Handyman arrived with an extremely efficient, talented and spirited crew. They are roofers after all and not investment bankers! They removed and replaced the old roof, redesigned and rebuilt my entire gutter system, and repaired the fire damage which required quite a bit of detailed carpentry. The workmanship was amazing. I was not expecting such attention to detail on the carpentry. The whole job was done with very little inconvenience to me. They worked in sections and had my yard and my neighbors yard completely cleaned up at the close of each day. I never felt like I need to be home to "supervise" the work or the workers. Even considering our garden and outdoor living space. We are pretty serious gardeners, and they never trampled the garden or left debris in the beds. After the whole job was finished, they systematically touched up any paint chips, dented siding and other routine dings that happen with such a big job. They even touched up paint that had nothing to do with them so that I would not have to try and touch up paint at the highest parts of the house. At the end of the job the final bill for the roof came in as quoted. The fire damage repair was quoted as a range depending on the actual work needed. Even that came in less than the upper end of that range. All in all, I paid less than I was told to expect. Sometimes it pays not to go with the lowest bid! I cannot recommend these guys highly enough. They are true craftsmen, efficient workers, and respectful of our property and that of our neighbors. In the end, they also ended up being the same or perhaps less than the lowest bidder. read more

The name of this company is probably not helpful. This is a well known contractor in the city, owned by Joe Gott. His business is listed as a general contractor, but I only have experience with his roof work. They did a residential roof for me about six years ago. Lowest bid (of four), and they were recommended to me. Bids ranged from $11K to $18K. They were a one crew company, and Joe came out and met me and also handed me the bid. They took six months to get to my job (instead of three as promised), which is why I give them four stars, but they did a good job, took care of clean up, and didn't annoy my neighbors. The crew was a little rough around the edges, old trucks, but who cares. They brought a twelve man crew, and were in and out in four days. A year or so later, I had them look at a leak, which turned out to not be the roof, and they came right away without charge. Six years later, and no problems with their work. I'd definitely use Joe again for roofing, and I've recommended him to friends who have also had good results. read more

This past June i had Home Handyman Service do their 3rd major project to my home in the Elmwood Village. They have built for me a front and back deck, a fully remodeled full bathroom and most recently a second floor porch. Their work is exceptional and very professional. They arrive on time each day they are on site and work very diligently and efficiently. The final product is better than the vision that sparked the idea for the renovation. The day of the heavy summer rain, the roof in the back of my house began to leak. I freaked right out, called every roof business on Yelp. Louis called me back, calmed me down, asked me appropriate questions, told me honestly that while he could come out in a few days to assess the situation, it would be 2 weeks or so before he could fix it. I got other estimates, and Home Handyman Service was not the lowest bid, but I so appreciated the time he took to speak to this crazy lady calmly, using words I could understand. After the repair, there was a bit of an issue that he fixed immediately, and later called back to make sure everything was ok. I would highly recommend this service. read more

We recently had a new roof put on by Home Handyman Service and they did a fantastic job. This was not an easy job. We have a 2 1/2 story house with two dormers and very limited access. The Home Handyman crew was extremely professional and respectful. They cleaned up thoroughly at the end of each day and at the conclusion of the job. The owner, Lou, is the most responsive contractor we've ever experienced. He explained everything thoroughly and informed us of issues that arose during the course of the roof replacement. Seven or eight years ago, HHS re-roofed a small addition to my house. They were the high bidder, by a few hundred $, but the only one who gave me confidence they would solve the problem of leaking where the roof met the side wall of the older structure and they included the purchase of new flashing for a skylight from its manufacturer in lieu of relying on roofing cement or attempting to fabricate their own complex part. After seven or eight years with no problems, I didn't bother ask anyone else to bid on re-roofing the main structure. They just finished today, later than expected due to many days of rain. I should note that there were lo water-related issues when the rains interrupted the half-done project. My first job was not started until the spring following the autumn I accepted the bid. The current job started 10 days after I accepted the bid, after I delayed it a week to get my funds together. They never over-promised on scheduling. They won't let their men work in ice or snow and they can't work in the rain. I was fortunate to get them at the beginning of the season. Three weeks later, they have a 6 week backlog. Old (100+ years) houses are full of surprises, and I feared the worst when the siding on a dormer was discovered to be rotten and many lengths of the old decking needed replacement. I also added some additional work when I saw how well they did the dormer siding. The bill for the additions, which I authorized without a quote, was a mere 4% of the original job. If you're looking for someone you can trust, its Home Handyman Services. They could have easily taken advantage of me, but given the scope of the original job, they did the additions at their cost. The quality of the work is as good as can be and absolutely thorough. They replaced all the flashing, including vent pipes. Replaced a corroded chimney brace, tuck-pointed another chimney, and whatever else a roofing contractor SHOULD do. Everything was cleaned at the end of each day, including scouring the ground for nails. You would never know that the job entailed a complete tear-off of the existing roof. Half of their crew has been with them for many years, and the newer ones seem to know that they're working for people who let them do their best and treat them well. The entire crew was polite, quiet and professional I don't think you can do any better than Home Handyman Service when it comes to roofing and restoration-related work. read more
