Fun concept, generous portions, but this is not Mexican food. I tried Holy Peno because it advertises itself as a "Halal Mexican Grill," and unfortunately, that description is what disappointed me the most. In my opinion, this is not Mexican food. The food may have the appearance and presentation of Mexican dishes, but the flavors, seasoning, spices, and preparation of the meat are much more reminiscent of Middle Eastern cuisine. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Middle Eastern food -- but if you're specifically looking for Mexican food, you should know that you are not getting that here. The flavors simply aren't there. The meat wasn't prepared or seasoned in the way I would expect from Mexican cooking, and overall the food tasted more like Middle Eastern food presented in a Mexican-inspired format. It was also a little salty. Because the restaurant specifically uses the phrase "Halal Mexican Grill," I found the labeling frustrating. As someone who was expecting Mexican food, I felt misled by the description. In my opinion, calling this Mexican food does a disservice to what Mexican cuisine actually is. If you're craving authentic Mexican flavors, I'd recommend driving a little farther and going somewhere that specializes in actual Mexican cooking. I also tried the hibiscus agua fresca, and unfortunately, that was a complete miss. It had an extremely strong chemical smell and taste that reminded me of nail polish. I'm not exaggerating -- that was genuinely the first thing that came to mind. I couldn't finish it, and it didn't resemble the hibiscus water I'm accustomed to in either flavor or appearance. That said, there are definitely positives. The portions are very generous for the price, the customer service was good, and the overall branding and presentation are fun and kitschy. If you're simply hungry and looking for an inexpensive meal with a substantial portion, you may enjoy it. But if you're going specifically because you're craving Mexican food, don't. You are getting something very different. Bottom line: Good portions, reasonable prices, and friendly service. But despite the "Halal Mexican Grill" branding, I would not consider this Mexican food. Like most I saw this place on TikTok and knew I had to try it. Me and best friend made our way there in my lunch. When I try a new place I'm always cautious of what I put on things because I don't know if I will like it. When we walked in we were created and asked if we had been there before. We let the lady know we hadn't. The person was very helpful in explaining everything and how things worked. They do only have about 2 or 3 tables so it isn't a place to really sit down in but the ambiance is good. I ordered a Steak and shrimp bowl with cilantro lime rice, no beans, corn salsa, shredded cheese, and sour cream. I did get a side of Garlic Cilantro Sauce. They also gave me complimentary chips. The steak was kinda bland to me but the shrimp was delicious. Having the steak with the shrimp made the bowl better. The corn salsa is good it just does have onion in it which I'm not a fan of but I deal with. The chips could have use more salt but overall good. The bowls are huge!! I was able to eat off of it for a couple of days. They didn't have any corn for elote so we have to come back for that. The pricing was good for what you get. This place is amazing and I can't wait till it expands. Yes it's going to be huge. The food and service here are out of this world. The line crew serving the food was fun and very accommodating to every customer. We are in line on a Saturday night for 10-12 minutes and watching them serve everyone was an experience in itself. The food was flavorful and the portions are very generous. They have more sauce and topping than Chipotle and Qdoba. They serve 5-6 different agua frescas that were not too sweet and very very refreshing. They were amazing. We loved the cucumber lime. They have a nachos option for your entree which was pretty cool and can't wait to have next time. They also have SHRIMP! Huge plus for us. Run here!!! Tried their birria tacos!! And it was delicious! Definitely on my top 3 birria tacos I ever had. They also gave free chips with it. The place doesn't have that many seating options, it's more of a take out place. You can also bring your own chips bags like flamin hot or Doritos and fill it up for 10$. I was excited when I saw this being built, as it's a fully halal Mexican restaurant. It's located in a newly built plaza. Holy Peno is located at one end. It's fast food-ish inside, but I don't think it needs to be anything fancy. They have burritos, tacos, bowls, quesadillas, and a signature holy burrito. I ordered a bowl with birria beef for takeout, which came with a side of nachos. The bowl was completely customizable. The beef mixed with pinto beans, rice, grilled onions, and sauces was delicious. The nachos were also very good; nice crunch and a lime salt flavor. I only went in to pick up the order, but service was fine. Pricing is slightly on the higher end (i.e. burritos and bowls start at $15. I want to go back and try the holy burrito, but I would recommend eating that there because I imagine it would get pretty soggy by the time you bring it home. read more
