Holt Brothers BBQ is a must stop for excellent food. Our family stopped here on our way home to Maryland. The restaurant serves authentic BBQ ribs which are tender, meaty and fall off the bone when you eat them. My son had tacos and hush puppies and said they were awesome. The chicken was amazing, tender and juicy and my seventeen month old granddaughter loved it. I recommend the nacho tater tots, really good and the green beans and sweet potatoes. Holt Bros served up some solid barbecue. I loved their half chicken--though there wasn't as much meat on the bone as I would've liked, the chicken was cooked and flavored well. The hushpuppies were super good and came with sweet butter, but if I had known every platter comes with two, I would've gotten a different side. The macaroni was really tasty too, on the creamier side. Can't go wrong with Texas toast, either. I really liked their bourbon and honey based sauces, and left with enough leftovers for another meal. I am really torn between a 3 and a 4. A very mixed experience for this first time visitor (passing thru town). After 12 hours in the car, we were ready for a good bbq dinner. We both ordered the "combo" where you get 2 meats and 2 sides, First off, the fat guy with the beard was not wearing a mask. This is the person you are talking to entering your order. I get it that some people think the mask stuff is BS, but look at the states that are wearing masks, and those that are not. And compare the infection rate. Enough said. I had the pulled pork and the brisket. The pulled pork was excellent. Well prepared, tender and just right. The brisket was a disappointment. First, it was cold, second it was fatty. Just not great. I had collard greens and jalapeño Cole slaw. The greens were possibly the best I have ever had, top notch!! The slaw was really spicy. But not tasty spicy. Just spicy. Meh, not great. My friend had the chicken and the ribs. He said the chicken was good, but the ribs were not great. I tried one, and have to agree. A bit chewy and far to sweet/caramelized. He had Mac and cheese as a side, which was fine. I don't recall the other side. Beer is bottles only, which is okay. Summary? Ate at the Darlington location yesterday. Got a half chicken and rib combo with 2 sides. The sides were good like you find at many BBQ pkace but was surprised and well pleased with the size and amount of meat I got. I came in a tomato based sauce that was great as well. Went Thursday 6/11. Ordered the combo, brisket & pulled pork platter with a side of Mac n cheese & onion rings with 1 PBR. Ate on the patio. I liked the pulled pork better than the brisket. Used the 2 sauces that was recommended to me a spicy & regular to be mixed and applied to the meats. Everything was tasty, though the temperature of the food was fair at best. I like my hot goods very hot. Actually left Avery good review earlier on Google maps. Ate our dinner around 6pm. Went back to our hotel after all was good until around midnight woke up with bad stomach pains and actually threw up my food. Predominantly brisket from what I could see. The BBQ was easily the worst BBQ I've ever had. I've had good vinegar-based BBQ, but holy $h!+, this was easily the worst. I got the pulled pork, and it had a terrible skunky taste, and was so dry that I have a feeling it was sitting out for a while before it was given to us. The Mac and cheese was rancid. The cheese seemed to be congealed and tasted rotten. Absolutely disgusting. Now the smoke wings have been a hit and a miss. The first time I got the smoked wings, the wings were HUGE, Deep fried alittle bit unbearable. They tasted as if they had been soaked in salt water for 2 days. Overall rating ON THE FIRST try.. 6.5/10. The second time was more recent. (Yesterday). They were smaller wings, like chicken drumettes. They were perfectly flavored, didn't even see, fried it they were and they were a 10/10. The staff so far has always been friendly. I've met one of the brothers and he makes sure to make you feel welcomed. The overall environment is nice. They always have a plethora of desserts. I haven't tried yet cause I'm tryna cut back on the sugar and the sweet tea is enough for me. Can't forget to mention the sauces they have all over the restaurant. They hit! I'm totally impressed with this new BBQ place and held off from a 5 star review for 2 reasons which were not entirely the restaurants fault. First as they had just opened they were serving a limited menu so I didn't get to see everything that will be offered in the future. Secondly, we went around 130 on a weekday and there was no place to sit. The place was packed with customers roaming the dining room looking for a place to eat. There were lots of picnic tables outside so when the weather is nice, seating won't be a problem. Now for the good part! The food was great. We had the Holt hero - a bbq sandwich accompanied by a small side of coleslaw and choice of fries or tots. The sandwich was huge with fresh bun and a large variety of sauces.. my favorite Honey Holt, a spicy,vinegar based sauce! We also tried the Holt Bros American Burger with a meaty patty of beef, brisket, and sausage and fried onion rings. Both were outstanding and were served quickly with a smile by our friendly server... as we found an empty booth just in time! I will go back and when it's warm out I expect to try a bourbon cocktail or craft beer as I sit outside and sample the rest of the menu. We came to Holt Bro's BBQ on a whim on our drive back from the beach and it did not disappoint! Despite there being a lot of cars in the parking lot when we arrived, we walked right in and were first in line to order. One of the owners came out and asked if we had been there before. We told him we hadn't, and he gave us a run through of the most popular items on the menu and brought us out a mini sampler plate to try before we ordered. On the sampler plate there was pulled pork, beef brisket, & a hush puppy. That sampler plate sold us! We ended up ordering the combo plate with brisket, pulled pork, hush puppies, and mac-n-cheese to share. They have a big wrap-around porch outside with large picnic tables and fans. We easily found a place to sit outdoors and shortly after we sat down, our food arrived. The BBQ was very flavorful! The Mac-n-cheese was creamy and cheesy, and the hush puppies were sweet and crisp. We also got the original bbq sauce, honey sauce, and mustard based sauce. All were excellent and they give you a LOT of food. Even though we split a meal, we had leftovers to take with us when we left. Overall our experience was fantastic! If the review were only based on food, I would have easily given it 4 stars. I got the burger and there was plenty of meat, great flavor, only negative was it was very very well done. My fault for not requesting medium. The 2 stars was for the unfriendly workers. Two of them were extremely nice, the young lady that took my order and another I asked a condiment question. The other two and one of the cooks looked very unhappy to be there. They never smiled, didn't bother speaking, and just dropped my food off and that was it. We've eaten here several times since they opened. The Holt Hero is a very hearty portion of bbq on a bun. You won't leave hungry. The bbq is lean and well prepared. But, to eat here, you must LOVE vinegar. Like really love it. The Holt Hero comes with vinegary cole slaw and fries. All of your bottled sauce choices on the table are also vinegar based.
